    Can the waterfall spillway construction be done with cement instead of foam? The negative rock installation just didn't seem very permanent - what happens when the goat decides to walk on it? One other question about cement - does it cause any problem (like eventual leaks) when cement is applied directly on the liner? We live in Indiana where the winters are tough so what problems will thawing and freezing cause in regards to foam or cement?

    • @ThePondDigger
      @ThePondDigger  10 лет назад

      Donna that is a great question, thanks for asking. The foam installation is actually very strong when done correctly. In fact, not sure if you know this, we actually removed this pond shortly after filming to rebuild the "set" for another video series demonstration. Believe it or not, It took some effort to remove that spillway stone! If you use cement to mortar the rock work the freeze thaw in your area could separate the cement just as easy as the foam. So I would suggest doing a fantastic job dry stacking your waterfall and using the foam to direct the water flow. Annually you can easily remove any foam that may have separated due to a hard winter. Then refoam the waterfall for the next season. Hard to do with cement. The foam should last several seasons before the need for repair. The cement will have not harmful effect on the liner.

    Could I have a waterfall even if the pond freezes? Because I live in Wisconsin and I want to build a pond with a waterfall and do I need to still put a liner in Even if I have clay soil?

  • @titanart6225
    @titanart6225 6 лет назад

    @thePondDigger do you have a video showing the area preparation for the waterfall spillway? I'm pretty sure you tamp the area down, level the spillway, and then backfill around it with dirt. I'm doing a pondless waterfall feature and I used a bit of RCA and topsoil around my waterfall spillway area, tamped it down and used paver sand to level the area for the spillway - but I'm concerned during winter months when I winterize the waterfall -- will the level be off next season between the freezing and thawing of ground? The spillway is plastic and without water on it there is very little weight to keep it sitting in place... What are your thoughts?

  • @ThePondDigger

    There is no easy solution. You likely still have remnants of the foam stuck to your hands as I write this reply. When it hardens off I typically will chip it off little by little over a few days. :)

    I think the goat 🐐 or kids already remove the spill rock🪨 as of now. That wall fall to me is a NO TOUCH WATER FALL because it will simply fall. I think best approach is to use a spill rock that is big anough from from the bottom. Instead of that flat rock. You could have used such a rock and lock it with frame rocks. The bio falls also is too high up. In my opinion, if it was a little lower and a little back with two drops would have been much better.

    • @ThePondDigger
      @ThePondDigger  8 лет назад

      +Michelle Edwards I prefer the waterfall in a little deeper section of the pond but I don't think it is critical in most situations. There could be design scenarios where it is important one way or the other. I hope that Yes and No answer helps.

    I have a waterfall that is loosing water over the back of the waterfall. I've had several quotes to fix it ranging for $500 - $1600+. Someone told me to build up the back area with foam and rock to stop the water from going out the back of the waterfall. Do you think I could do that using the information you have given us?
    Thank you,
    Mary

    • @ThePondDigger
      @ThePondDigger  9 лет назад

      Mary Hauck The foam will not keep the water contained. The waterfall foam will slow it down but remember the foam is porous so the water can still travel through the waterfall foam and leak. It is mandatory that you check the level of the waterfall filter. If it is level from side to side and front to back then you have some easy options. Maybe the pump is too strong or the slate on the falls is installed to high on the face plate. Maybe some plants have interrupted the weir opening. When you put a level on the filter from front to back and the back of the waterfall is falling away then you have a more extensive repair. Can you email me photos?

    • @maryhauck9022
      @maryhauck9022 9 лет назад

      ThePondDigger I'll send some pictures. Someone from a pond service came to my home and removed the waterfall filter. He told me that was I needed to do to fix the problem. He also removed this bag of rocks. This created more of a problem! I'm not sure about how to determine the level of the waterfall filter. I still need to finish viewing all your videos. They help me understand my waterfall better. I'm having difficulty finding someone who know how to fix the problem. Most the people I have contacted are charging $100 just to look at my waterfall. I don't know if that is a standard fee or expensive. Others are just quoting me over the phone without looking at the problem. Thanks for your help! Mary

    instead of foaming everything, i think i would have left the flap that you cut from the filter opening. cut the sides, but not the bottom. then just fold it out like a drawbridge and hide it under the rocks. et voila, no water leaking through the back of the rocks. was denkst du?
