Aly, your contour series is absolutely the best I have ever seen! Extremely detailed with fabulous examples on your own face. Great job Aly! I don't think anyone has synthesized all the various videos, good and bad previous to you. Superb that you show various brushes. Wish you would add various contour products and colors you recommend for various complexions.

You know what telling the science behind makeup is the best telling method. Bcz everybody has unique face with complex shapes and complex combinations. By understanding what is done to create what effect. We can apply as much as we need.

THANK YOU!!! At last some common sense advice! Enough with the "suck in your cheeks" nonsense, etc. that everybody follows in a heartbeat without taking a moment to see whether it works or not. I love how you examine and ponder all the variables in context, analysing what realistically works and what doesn't, and I love how methodically you explain everything in an organised and coherent way, step by step. Being in possession of an extremely organised mind, it is almost "peaceful" to watch you talk. I came across you by chance and after watching a couple of your videos I rushed to hit the "subscribe" button (and I am very choosy subscribing!) I feel so happy to have found you. Well done, girl, congratulations!!

    Hi Aly!
I have an oval face with high cheekbones. I like the look of an editorial or modelesque cheekbone. I should also mention that I am very fair skinned, about a tad bit lighter than nc15. My favorite brushes are fluffy eye blenders to achieve a precise contour, and sometimes a tapered duo fiber brush. To apply I go from the point where my hair meets the top of my ear and diagonally down, stopping where my eye starts. I like to look straight ahead in the mirror doing this so I get the most natural look. I dust a good amount of product on the back of my wrist before I do this and gradually build it up because it's easier to correct that way. My favorite contours are more ashy, like the color to the left of the color you used in your kvd palette. I like a purple tone like Chanel notorious or Sephora contour blush in tranquil. It looks the most natural on my skin tone!
Wow that was detailed but contouring is no joke for me I love it and I love the way it looks!
    Thanks,
    Breanna

Aly I am really enjoying your videos. You bring a whole new concept to make up. I love your anatomical approach. I use the NARS Ito brush to outline the zygomatous arch, and then blend in. I may use Goss # 13 brush to apply, but I like the stark contrast the Ito brush gives: it just makes it easier. Then I blend like crazy! I also outline the jawline and nose to correct the shape of the nose and to sharpen the jawline. And blend, blend, blend! I use either MAC Sculpt or Kevyn Aucoin products. Thank you!

To me, Mary Greenwell is MUA royalty and she starts her contour at the top of the ear and stops it by the outside of the eye, she doesn't extend it very far. I think this creates natural looking cheekbones without making the face look too gaunt (which can be very aging).

    • @AlyArt

+micapetey yes totally agree!! Yes I guess it's my fav technique too ))

I have a square face, strong jaw, not prominent cheekbones. I like to use one brush, similar to the round almost dome shaped brush you have, to blend out a soft amount of contour in the general area of my cheek bones and temples, then i like to go in with a little more concentrated amount of that product and from the top of my ear do small strokes to get a more defined but still subtle contour , stopping about where my pupil is

Because I don't have prominent cheek bones I use the following method for contouring my face: I do it in the line of the number 3, like I am drawing a number 3 on both sides of my face (from the forehead just under the cheek bone and then the line ends on the jawline). Hope that helps. :) You are so talented Aly, I love your channel!

It made me happy to watch a new video of your series!! As you have said contouring is very different for everybody. I have a heart shape face and I used to contour it like most of the youtubers (which is like Kim Kardashian stylishl) but I noticed it made my nose to appear larger (I have a prominent nose) so what I do is just add blush on the apples of my cheeks and I put a tiny bit of light brown eye shadow to the bottom part of the nose, that's all I do :D

To contour my cheeks I use one of 2 methods. 1. I use a small dome shaped brush to place and blend in small circles like you show. Or 2. I take a flat, horizontal brush to place product and blend upward and then a larger fluffy brush for bronzer to blend and buff the products.

I have prominent cheekbones and an oval face. If I put the contouring product too close to my mouth, it makes my face look too narrow. So I place two fingers beside my nose, and don't go beyond that. The shadow ends just under the center of my cheekbones.

I use one of those flat top brushes that came with the boxed blushes. I don't really need to find my cheekbones, they're naturally noticeable.. so I just make the line then blend it, sometimes I use a color that can also be used as a blush, so this way I take the contour color up as blush..love ur videos, amazingly talented beautiful young woman, TFS and keep up good work xoxo

I use several lighting options on my makeup mirror such as home, office, natural, and day/night lighting. This helps with determining if the contour I'm using works in various lighting settings I might be in. This has helped to eliminate the surprise clown makeup look for me. Meaning I've applied makeup and ventured into public and looked at myself in the mirror in the car or restaurant (fluorescent lighting) and thought "Oh boy--this looked good at home and this look is not public friendly." The type of lighting in which I am in plays a huge role in deciding how to contour so that I look more natural rather than harsh lines that add years to the face. For example, attending an outdoor wedding where natural light for me requires different contour than what I would use to contour on say a photo shoot . I try to consider what lighting (indoor, outdoor, fluorescent, etc. will be and use that as a guide to how dark or light the contour should be while maintaining a natural look.

my favorite type of contouring is with a fake tanning mousse. i leave it on for a few hours and then wash it off and in my opinion it gives a natural looking contour that lasts day without looking like i'm wearing makeup. The key is to get a good quality fake tan mousse and blend it well and only apply a little. i also like to contour with two shades of foundation, a light and a dark foundation. for special occasion i contour with a cream and then go over with a powder to set.

I'm loving this series. I actually use a hybrid technique. I find my cheekbone to know where to start contouring (mine is in the middleof the ear) and then follow the line in the direction of the corners of my mouth. I have an oval face with round cheeks

You are so informative and brilliant, thank you for explaining this technique properly... I am struggling for many months now with contouring. I CANNOT WAIT for your next video for correcting face shapes.. PLEASE PLEASE include something for correcting narrow, long faces! There are NO tutorials for my face shape, and when I contour, I look even more like skeletor... and not healthy and youthful. I really really hope you do a technique to show how longer thin faces can be made to look more round, I would be so appreciative for this

I have high cheek bones and I have a very visible shadow. I also have pigmentation in that area (which I HATE). So I cover the pigmentation and I add a little color there. I have yellow undertones and am still looking for a favorite color for my skin tone. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your videos!! I just found you yesterday. :)

My face is heart shaped and I recently started contouring. In fact, I started contouring after I watched your videos, because I feel like no one has ever explained the techinques as good as you have. Anyways, I contour my cheekbones, temples, bridge of the nose, along the hair line and under my jaw line. And it is as you say, "hard to stop" contouring your face cus you never feel it's enough. :)

their is so many videos for mature skin, that say NOT to contour mature skin (often will say that the extra product will draw attention to wrinkles). others say that it's important TO do. I don't know who to listen to. I do know, glittery/shimmery products are a no-no for mature skin. what are your thoughts? btw, you are an amazingly talented artist, keep up the great work!

    • @AlyArt
      @AlyArt  9 лет назад +2

+Roxane Gail Welsh thank you Roxanne! It also depends on the face you have, the shape and cheekbones. My mom is more than 60. She has some wrinkles and when I do her makeup I normally apply very little of a darker powder that I use (matte taupe color) under her cheekbone just for a lifting effect. That helped. Bit I never put much. It makes the face heavy. I use the color very soft so it is even hard to see but it's making it's thing x x x

My face is long and slim, and a bit heart-shaped. I try to contour around my chin and jaw to shorten my face a bit- I skip the cheekbone sculpting part- my face is very narrow as it is.. And I love the Inglot shading powder! I'm super pale, and Inglot's is the only shade that doesn't look completly fake on me.

I have prominent cheekbones, therefore a natural shadow and I have to be careful not to let the contour get too close to nose or mouth or my face looks too thin. So I usually stop just where the iris of my eye starts.

  • @viviandominguez4089

I already have very prominent cheek bones (especially when I smile) and a very slim face, so when I am contouring my face I have to make sure the lines are very well blended and not to dark. If I am contouring for a daytime look, I will use a medium brown or even a light brown (depending on what I am contouring). If I am contouring my nose, I'll use a light brown. I feel that it looks more natural that way considering my natural shadows are very light. When I am doing my cheeks and forehead I will use the medium brown color just because I don't want to make myself look overdrawn or cartoonish. Though if I am going to a night club setting I would use a dark brown for my cheeks and forehead and the medium brown for my nose. Mainly so my makeup looks more dramatic and visible in the fluorescent lighting.

I'm not crazy about either of those brushes in general for contouring ? But if anything ? I'd go with the angle brush for sure, fits smaller faces as well as larger faces :) but personally I like a straight brush !! Wide but flat, if that makes sense? Light touch then blend it out !

Recently I have been using the Burberry technique with creams. just put a few lines that get smaller from under the cheekbone to the nose blend then I put my foundation over it for a more subtle look. I have a round face BTW.

I use one of those wide flat brushes one often gets with blushes, best thing ever. Then maybe soften the effect with a blush/powder brush, if necessary. I have defined cheeckbones so I just follow and exaggerate natural shadows. I think if one puts a bright light above the face, then even a rounder, less defined cheek will show a bit of shadow that can be then enhanced. Also, I don't love the second technique, the ear to corner of mouth--it gives a very straight, masculine sort of line making a female face look harsh and overly chiselled.
