#MikesBookReviews #RobinHobb #Farseer Развлечения
Nighteyes is my favorite fantasy character, ever.
Whenever i start a new trilogy by her I say, "time to Hobbit".
Me, while reading WoT: “Jesus Jordan, get on with it.”
Me, while reading any book from Robin Hobb: “Take all the time you need, I could read this forever and be perfectly happy.”
Needless to say, I am never bothered by pacing in her books. :)
LM*AO . . . we disagree strongly on this :) I love both, but love RJ much more.
@Vijay Reads
Yep.
I read a few books in which (for exemple) a fight is going on, but clothes, environment, armor, what swords look like weren't described almost at all.
I still liked the book, but it was very frustrating. :))
Same here! I enjoyed every second of the slow pace, it felt cozy at times
The pacing in the Farseer trilogy is masterful! Time is given to things that require it. In some og her other books I have problems with the pacing (Rainwild Chronicled and Fitz and the Fool especially) but the Farseers really hold up after multiple re-reads. Royal Assadsin being my favourite.
Kettricken stole the story, for me. Love her SO much.
That's who I wish Fitz could actually get with.
THEY WOULD NEVER!!!! You go apologize to Verity right now.
She is Sacrifice, and he is a good King’s Man.
@@mikesbookreviews you'll not like a certain scene in book3 because... well you'll see.
love her but she had her bitchy moments, actually every woman in this series had bitchy moments except Patience maybe. Hobb writes male characters better then female characters.
Good luck! It only gets better. The tawny man trilogy and fitz and the fool trilogy are two of my favorite trilogies of all time. Fitz, the Fool, and Nighteyes are easily some of the best characters in fantasy. Period.
Question: do we see Fitz a lot in the Tawny man trilogy? No spoiler just a yes/no and often or a little as answer please
@@aysseralwan yes definitely. The farseer, tawny man, and fitz and the fool trilogies have fitz as the main character.
@@elliotm6697 cool wasn't sure about tawny man trilogy. Thank you for the quick reply mate
@@elliotm6697 ah yes and Gintama best anime
"As much as I hate Regal, I think I love Verity." YES. Verity is such a good man, and it only drives home how much Fitz missed out on having Chivialry claim him as his own and be a real dad to him. It is also because Verity is who he is that Fitz sees and loves the six duchies the way he does. Early on, when Fitz sees the world through Shrewd's eyes with the skill, THAT is a defining character point for him and one thing he shares with his royal family (except Regal, ofc). At the very start of the book, he's ready to give up but after seeing the world through Shrewd's eyes and skilling, he says... 'no, I know the difference now, and I'm ready to ride back with Burrich' the next day. A man has work to do.
I didn’t like Molly at all when I first read the books in my teens, I sympathized more with her when I was older and reread it, we as readers know everything Fitz goes through but she knows practically nothing, except that he seems to just not be there for her despite knowing she needs him, he can’t tell her why so how can we really expect her to understand his situation? But that said they are not my favorite couple, to me they’re on par with Denna and Kvothe as far as “just why?” couples go.
Nighteyes is my all time favorite animal character, he changed my world view, love how he’s written, love that she’s not trying to make him have a human voice, love the slow build towards friendship and trust, he and Fitz are just perfect together.
Hi. The story just gets better and better🐺
I loved this one! Honestly, Robin Hobb easily became one of my top writers. Superb character work.

I honestly hated the way Fitz dragged Molly on like that. I could see that he genuinely had feelings for her and i felt for him but i think she deserved better and man, it hurts to be kept in the dark, to be told to just wait, hold out for the day that someone will be able to finally have the time and space to be with you. So i get why she acts the way she does as well. I really want to see where their relationship is going.
Mike, you gave me a big smile today with your thoughts on Farseer! I’m glad to hear you’re enjoying your first foray into the Realm of the Elderlings. I too wanted more of the forged, and I had minor complaints about the flatness of the baddies. This is something that improves in Liveship Traders. Also, the full beard on you looks great!
I would just sit in Patience's room all day and talk to her and Lacey, would nope out every time Molly entered the scene and hang out with the Fool.
Love seeing you discovering Hobb. I've read Farseer and liveships so far and think liveships may be the best triolgy I've read.
Totally agree with your ending point she's one of the greats imo and doesn't really get enough credit for it
I don't know if this helps, but I started to see the whole Realm of the Elderlings as a very... archaeological experience. Every book, as the characters grow and see new parts of the world they peel back and expose parts of the lore as they learn. I've seen people describe it as a 'soft magic system' but I don't agree - I think there's a lot of depth in there but we only see it as the characters do. I felt like I was always having to puzzle things out rather there being some sort of all-knowing wise character who could just info-dump the hows and whys of the magic and the world. I think that made it feel very real and alive and relatable.
I think you're going to really get a kick out of The Liveships. It's... different vibes, haha so be prepared for that , but really blows everything wide open.
I've been pushing for Robin Hobb for a long time. As far as I'm concerned she is a Rushmore level author in modern fantasy. Abercrombie Rothfuss Lynch Sanderson. I've long since described her as Lady Grimdark. She wrecks you on an emotional level. She pulls your heartstrings out with a pair of pliers.
Just a wonderful author. Evil. Beautiful prose
, Plodding story lines, long-term development.
I'm simple man. I see Robin Hobb books, I press like
I love the conversation between Fritz and Nighteyes .
Soldier son trilogy is dark and dirty. Well worth it as a break to the elderling world.
When I first read Farseer I hated Molly too but now I sympathize with her character a lot more. You have to remember that she knows literally nothing about Fitz's life. We know he's off being a hero but she doesn't know anything about it. All she knows is that he comes by for a fuck occasionally and claims to love her but always chooses other things over her. He seems like a coward to her. Fitz always has good intentions but he's an idiot.
Thanks for the shoutout!!! That’s why you’re my favorite!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Mike is awesome but so are you!!!! Shoutout was earned
@@AndrewsWizardlyReads I’m glad you can’t see me, because I’m blushing SO HARD 😊
I hope you never have to die for Nighteyes, but it means a lot to know you would ✊🏼
@@megansreadingrevelations last night I tried to overthrow the discord. Then lord Mike gives you a shoutout..... I’m not worthy 😂
@@AndrewsWizardlyReads your surrender to my discord reign was like honey on my tongue 😂😂😂
Ah Molly's relationship with Fitz has always been a struggle for me to accept and I know so many of the fans concur.
Thanks for doing this review.
Now I'm off to see if I can get my hands on those illustrated editions!!!
As you said it is a slow burner so some of the answer you will get in the next book and some you will have to wait later into the RotE series and you never know what is important and why till it get reviled
I'm a huge sucker for animal companions too. Like I've always been aware of this, but it's been reading Royal Assassin that the extent of how much I love this trope has been made very clear to me. Like it's almost cheating for the author, add even a decent animal companion (especially a dog or wolf) and my appreciation for the story will go up significantly. Needless to say I've loved everything with Cub/Nighteyes.
As for the pacing, I'm only 3/4 or so of the way through Royal Assassin but so far I've actually been surprised by how little the books have dragged for me with the pacing being used. From early on in Assassin's Apprentice I got invested and have never really felt the pacing at all, though if I'm being objective I can see that it's clearly slow paced and I definitely can see how it might drag for you and others. The story so far for me isn't like a Malazan or an ASOIAF where there are these big major mind blowing moments, I'm just really enjoying the story and starting to feel pretty optimistic about Realm of the Elderlings as a whole.
Lol why did I rewind that intro like 3 times? Haha the coffee sip killed me 🤣
100% unplanned ha ha
Great review. I absolutely loved this trilogy and currently making my way through the entire Realm of the Elderlings series. Hobb's writing is glorious.
Mike I'm a new fan of your channel because to me you're one of the last remaining 'honest channels' as I notice when a channel blows up really big, without naming any names, their reviews tend to get progressively watered down and dishonest because they become friends with the authors or they don't want to say things that offend their now huge fanbase etc. So I end up getting turned off and find very honest voices like yours much more refreshing because the reviews feel truly authentic and trustworthy
It's been a while since I've read this , but in defense of Molly reacting the way she did.. I think she knows Fitz is keeping things from her, and cannot or will not put her above everything else. Him not coming to comfort her is the one clear instance she can use as a stick to hit him with repeatedly to both vent her frustration and get him to open up.
Is it a fair argument on her part? Mostly no, but not all arguments in a relationship are about fair or rational points.
A lot of people complain about Molly being annoying but remember that you're experiencing the story through Fitz's eyes. Spoilers for Royal Assassin:
.
.
.
From her point of view she's committed herself to a relationship with a guy who is consistently lying and withholding information about his life from her, and meanwhile she's essentially making all her life decisions to revolve around this manipulative relationship. Fitz not only refuses to tell her that he's an assassin, he also withholds that he's sharing his mind (and by extension all their sexual encounters) with a wolf. He has basically decided that if she knew the truth she would leave him and so his solution is... remain in the relationship but continue to lie and withhold the truth from her, thus denying her agency in her own life. And when he eventually does tell her he's an assassin and she's (understandably) disgusted his big takeaway is "well I guess telling the truth was the wrong thing to do after all!" Merphy Napier summarised this all very well in her review.
And for the record I absolutely adore this series, and I love Fitz, but he's not without his flaws and that's what makes Hobb's characterisation so great!
Molly is constantly selfish and self-centered when she KNOWS he is dedicated to his role and that his kingdom comes first. And she's expecting a child ('he's like what 15 max in this book?) to want a serious relationship with her. She KNOWS he is dedicated to his role and that his kingdom comes first. She knows this and constantly says "WeLl WhAt AbOuT mE?". She's the worst. If she wants a MAN who has TIME for her, go date a MAN who has TIME. for her, go date a MAN who has TIME.
On the topic of highlighting books, I don't but I did put colored post-it page tabs as I read Fool's Fate and it had around 100 tabs, it was just ridiculous lol. Anywhere from a beautifully written passage, to heartfelt exchanges between characters, to quotes I could lift from the text without story context and still be a good book quote ... It got out of hand. XD
So glad you're enjoying the series! I actually got on youtube just to see if you had posted anything else for RA and you were at the top of my feed, like an answered prayer! Looking forward to your thoughts on AQ! (If you haven't already ordered the illustrated edition, be sure to check out The Signed Page for a signed copy!)
Also Molly sucks, you're not alone haha. Fitz is a complicated person and I would probably get mad at him sometimes too so I sort of get her to an extent but she's frustratingly upset at all times. She never relents. I could not stand her. Honestly thank the gods for Nighteyes. Where Molly made the story frustrating, Nighteyes made it all better.
Just finished it myself and I'm very frustrated over Molly too. She seemed to be more mature from taking care of her Dad in book 1 then book 2 she was much more childish to me. NightEyes Burrich and Fitz whole thing I love so much! Look forward to seeing where book 3 goes.
I absolutely love this review (and this series!) I just started book 3 and really hoping it wraps up nicely.
Thanks Mr. Mike just finished this morning!!!!
Just finished this book, now I can watch your review! The prose in this is amazing, I didn't even notice the slow burn pacing until you said it
I also would 'die for Nighteyes'.
I think pacing is the complaint I hear most often about all of Robin Hobb's books, as a ride or die fan, I enjoy the eventless(?) time we spend with the characters I've grown to love, I'm content to hang out, and keep them company while they just go through the things that get them to the next 'exciting' bit.
A couple hundred pages into this right now. Nighteyes is a good boy but after Smithy and Nosy I feel wary and don't want to get attached. That's totally what Fitz is going through as well. That's totally what Hobb intended me to feel, isn't it?
dude, you'll get attached if you want it or not.
@@leenox23 This is what I was afraid of.
Yes it is, you can't stop it, Nighteyes is the best.
I'm so happy to hear you are all in! I'm about halfway through RotE (done with three trilogies) and I'm excited to keep going. I definitely needed that break after Fool's Fate, and I'm a little nervous about diving into a quartet without Fitz, but I too am all in. I think you will REALLY enjoy Liveship Traders. I could say a lot of good things about that but I really hope you read it. Really fleshes out the world, and yet again, gives us some amazing characters. Plus it is self-contained, so it's just a very satisfying story while still teasing us on the bigger mysteries of RotE.
In regards to how characters appear, Regal always evil, Molly nagging, etc, remember it's all from Fitz PoV. And in some ways he is an unreliable narrator, and pushing his own bias into the text.
Also helps to remember the ages of characters they're still very young in RA, so of course they're gonna make mistakes
Sure, but Hobb uses this perspective as plot device to then have other characters like Chade reveal to Fitz how he's myopic on certain people or events yet this never happens with Regal.
Just finished👍
Yeah it does continue to get better - the last 3 books in the 'series' are ridiculously good. It broke me, no easy feat.
Great review! Totally agree with the pacing issues and Molly but as long as the payoff stays this good I am fine. The ending of Royal Assassin was amazing and made me love Burrich even more as a character.
My understanding is that Hobbs and GRRMartin arrived at similar plot twists to their stories (Nighteyes/Ghost) at the same time during the writing process but completely separately and, being colleagues, discussed this subject with one another before publication of their books.
My problems with the second book is that l feel it was unrealistic that Regal would fool so many people and would get away with so much with zero pushback or consequences. Also, I really struggle to like or care about Chade.
Good review, excellent series!!!!!
I loved this series, and Nighteyes in particular became a favourite. He is great in Royal Assassin, but I really felt he went into the next level in the next book.
The Fitz gets beaten up all the time Trilogy..
I was even expecting not to like Nighteyes that much and I still ended up liking him a lot! Provablty mostly due his surprisingly humoristic side.
I think it was a great introduction too him as well, kind of a smash cut where the new scene isn't really explained and ypu slowly realize what's up as you go. (there was another one like that when he's walking the stairs and then smash cut into climbing a wall with no immediate explanation)
I’m so excited to hear what you think about Assassin’s Quest! It’s my personal favorite of the series but I think most people tend to prefer this one. I just finished Liveship Traders and am very happy to hear you’re planning on reading the whole Realm 😊
Thank you Mike! Molly is so frustrating!!!
The moment you said we are pack I knew I was going to love this ❤️🐺
Verity is hands down my favorite character of the series
Good review, Mike. And very similar to my thoughts on it. I think you'll find some of the "negative" aspects more of an issue in book 3, but hopefully not bad enough to sour things too much.
I am chomping at the bit to start AQ, but I wanna wait on my illustrated edition pre-order to get here.
Same.
Same
Can't wait for more assassining in Assassin's Quest!
Love the beard bro :-)
Yeah, I haven't yet read the second Farseer, but I was feeling like Hobb was already reiterating things more than I'd like even in the first one.
I love Nighteyes so much💕
The one thing that bugs me about the first Farseer trilogy is that Regal is kind of a moustache twirling villain. It is understandable as to how he became such an awful person because of how spoiled his mother made him. He reminds me of Prince John in the Disney cartoon Robin Hood.
The villains in Robin Hobb's other books do get better as the Elderlings series progresses. The Liveships has one of (in my opinion) the absolute best and most well written antagonists in fantasy. Without giving spoilers, I will just say that I found myself being pulled right into his grandiose plans and found myself actually rooting for him, up to a certain point. And while I love all of the Elderlings books, and Farseer certainly had me hooked on the series on it's own merits, Liveship Traders is probably my favorite trilogy of them all. Our protagonists there had a much more stable and loving upbringing and good family than Fitz, and so are much more proactive and emotionally healthy than Fitz ever could be.
About Molly, most of the fandom hates her. It's kind of understandable how she acts, her father is a violent drunk and at best neglects her. Then she's got Fitz, who she is in love with, but won't (or as we know, can't) be completely honest with her. She senses all of this secretiveness from him, but he can't reveal anything about himself. Then there's the fact that they live in a society a lot like A Game of Thrones where virtue and virginity are praised and having a child on the wrong side of the sheets, especially if you're royal, is one of the worst things you can do. To Molly, it must seem like Fitz is just toying with her emotions and visiting her for sex, and is distant and deceitful. But we don't see that because we're in Fitz's head, not Molly's.
But ultimately, everyone ends up where and with whom they need to.
About the forged, yes there will be more about them in book 3, but you will not understand their true scope and the horror of forging until you get midway through Tawny Man. The forged don't just up and disappear at the end of Farseer.
I just finished this second book and the only real nuance they gave to Regal's hate was that he believed that Chade (Lady Thyme) and/or Fitz poisoned his mother. That's more nuance then he had in the first book, but I agree that he's still a pretty black and white character.
I am eagerly awaiting Mike's review of Tawny man oh, I am sure Mike is going to cry his eyes out at the end of it. Robin hobb I think did a great job with the far-seer story. Long live nighteyes.
Regal's plot is frustrating, because he's a compelling villain, but at the same time you simply don't buy everything that just simply goes his way and how passive everyone else is. Thankfully, later on, there are some obvious reveals that confirms some stuff and gives the reader a little more reason to buy the absolute apathy of the other characters against Regal. I say obvious because I've never read a book three of a series where I got so many of the plot directions, granted, it was still well executed, but it's a little frustrating to know.
Regarding Fitz and Molly, I think she was justified in some of her complaints, because Fitz left her completely in the dark, specially when throughout the whole time Regal has been using rumor after rumor to tarnish the other Farseers and make himself look good. I'm more angry about Fitz and the kind of trope the author decided to use, than her character itself. These kinds of secret-based break up and tension is just CW-level stuff that often just kills interesting characters and every conflict comes off as annoyingly childish (that's why it feels like Molly nags all the time). It wouldn't have killed Fitz to just to tell everything he could while saying that there was more that he wasn't a allowed to tell and she needed to understand that? It was pretty clear by the way she was written that she would trust him. If at least Fitz told her that he was a bastard, so he was either a threat to the Farseers or a tool, she would have got that.
The trilogy is really, really good. It has some great characters in it and the world is mildly interesting, but there are some character choices and plotlines that could've been handled better (although, given some of Mike's opinions, what I took it as poor character choice, he'll take it as a relief).
I was screaming BUST THE DAMN DOOR DOWN AND PROTECT THE KING for 2/3 of this book ha ha
@@mikesbookreviews My thoughts exactly. After that slap on the wrist that Regal received, I suspected that he would be left unchecked, but not to the extent that it happened on this book.
Seems like everyone was on the same gladiator arena, but nobody wanted to fight or didn't know they were in a fight, while Regal was fully armed and already swinging.
MAY CONTAIN VERY VAGUE SPOILERS.
I have always felt that Molly was not right for Fitz. But he is a stubborn person, even in his love for her. He stubbornly loves her no matter what.
There is another character that I would have wanted him with because, in my opinion (and in our favorite fluffy character’s opinion) she is a much healthier, better fit for Fitz. I am trying to be vague because I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone who hasn’t read the entire series.
This next part contains a vague statement that may be considered a SPOILER to some.
The most heartbreaking thing for me at the very end of the Realm of the Elderlings was the missed opportunities with those two characters. All because Fitz is a stubborn fool!
Coffee!!!!
There is, another character that you don't mention by name that adds a whole new dimension. That said, Nighteyes is going to wow you. I always liked RJ's Hopper, but now I have a favorite.
I actually enjoyed Royal Assassin more then Apprentice, it was just a little more in depth like you said, maybe slow in parts but more enjoyable for me. As for the other series in the Realm of the Elderlings some are defiantly much better then others. Liveship Traders and the Tawny Man series are defiantly must reads, but series like The Rain Wild Cronicles, eh, i would leave it.
The Fool, her greatest character in the Realm comes out of his shell so to speak in the later series.
I'm with you on that. Not a huge fan of the Rain Wild series, and it really really didn't need to be 4 books instead of 3.
I'm just WAITING for the delivery of the Book 3 Illustrated Edition to restart this series with all of Magali Villeneuve's gorgeous artwork.
The Liveship Trader series is a whole different vibe, which I think you will love. It was so different that I wasn't sure I even liked the series at first (some of the characters seemed a bit 2-dimensional), but somewhere in there things take a real 180 and suddenly I was totally hooked. I still don't like some of the characters at all (like Wintrow). But the characters are so solid that there are even ones you love AND hate and by the end you are so conflicted about your own reaction that it makes you reflect on why that is. That's great writing. Also there's way more worldbuilding just by virtue of where it's set and the people it follows.
The Farseer trilogy is amazing 🤩 Does the illustrated edition have a lot of pictures or just a few? 🙂
10 full page BEAUTIFUL images for each book
@@JumpyDragon56 Thank you
Hello. Haven't checked in for a while! Just wondering why does no one talk about Robin Hobbs Soldiers son trilogy?? I just finished it and it was very good!!
Speaking of talking wolf companions: pretty sure you’re the right age to have enjoyed the original Elfquest (I think I remember you saying you were also into comics??).
You ought to see my marks in Memories of Ice lol.
Mike! I need to know where you get your posters above your bookshelves! I am trying to get some for my office
I finished this today! I cried near the end. 😞 Nighteyes is the best.
Congratulations, Mike. You've taken your first steps into the world of 'Ways Fitz's life would be better if he just shut up and did what Nighteyes says'.
I read all of them as they were published, re read each before the next was released and have just gone through the whole series (except Rainwild Chronicles) which I’m not fussed about, on Audible and they are still my favourite.
I love Abercrombie and Sanderson and all the more hyped authors, but none of them are as skilled as Hobb at getting the reader to live and breath her characters. And when you have read the final book Assassins Fate, I am sure you will agree that she is an astonishingly good writer.
you should really give rainwildes a try. it has amazing character developments , dragons, Elderlings and an awesome quest. just overall Hobb goodness.
I'm one of those readers who wants to see a well rounded character. Even if the villain is the worst person in the world please give me some good about that person. Otherwise the character just comes across as a cardboard figure of themselves. Regal and Galen are both good examples in this series.
when we eventually get to the motivations of Regal and Galen, and I'm sorry, I don't remember which book it comes in, they don't stop moustache twirling, but they become far more three dimensional as characters.
Hello Mike. Big fan of yours here from London England. My son is 8 and an avid reader. He always surprises me on how much he adores books and he loves fantasy. He has read obvious series. All Harry Potter, all LOTR and hobbit (save for return of the king which was just a little too hard for him!) he has read all the Percy Jackson. Anyway, getting to the point, can you suggest any young adult fantasy?
Dude thought he was going to be enjoying Nighteyes for the rest of the series. We all did pal we all did 😭
Farseer is a great example of a small kingdom with limited means. A king on a budget so to speak. You don't usually see that often
Yep, if I have to hear about his relationship with Molly ONE MORE TIME!
I agree with everything you said, I liked the book but it has a lot of holes in the plot, EVERYBODY could see what was happening to Shrewd and they did nothing, I confess I enjoyed more the first book cause the plot in this one was too weak!
RotE is an exceptionally good slow burn. I don't rank it quite as high as WoT but WoT's a continuous single-story while RotE is several shorter stories broken up by trilogies that can, for the most part, stand alone.
There are strengths and weaknesses to both. I never had issues with her pacing, but as should be obvious, I love slow burns :)
I've read all of the Elderlings books and I still believe Farseer Book #3 is the ;east of the series. No spoilers but there is a section in the end of the 3rd book that was just painful , especially given how Hobb is capable of writing.
I was just reminded about the "villain" in Liveship by Philip Chase, that person is as frustrating as Regal, but less of a classic villand and much better.
Yeah, Molly is frustrating, not the right match for Fitz
About half way through it and it is very good. I hope molly don't disappoint and regal dies but other than that any twist will be tough if she starts wacking characters.
I have to disagree on molly ****spoilers**
She does definitely get fed up and that shows through but ultimately Fitz is in the wrong here in my opinion. He was never honest with her, she was used by Nighteyes sexually and Fitz didn't make it enough of a priority to marry her and didn't let her off the hook early like he should have. All can be explained by ignorance and immaturity but I think SHE deserves better and Fitz needs to freaking grow up.
This is one of my all time favorite books even though I find most of Hobbs book just averageish. Characters, politics and fights were all top notch.
Seriuos Question:
The Books are from 1995-1997.
Why are the now such a great hype?
I am really looking forward for a fitting answer.
Mike, totally agree with your thoughts here. This book would have been a 5 star without Molly! I wanted to tell Fitz to just move on! He is not the smartest of characters...
I totally agree with that Molly sentiment. Man I just didn’t like her. But in a weird way, I think it accentuates who Fitz is, he is stubborn even in his insistence to love this one girl who may not even be the best choice for him.
Just out of curiosity, have you read all of the books in the series?
@@fiamapuccini276 You are spot on about how Molly serves to develop Fit's stubbornness and bad decision making. Unfortunately, these character traits make it a frustrating trilogy for me since it's in first person perspective. I have completed the Farseer Trilogy and am just now getting into the Liveship Traders.
@Justin Smith I can appreciate where you are coming from, and while I only have read the Farseer Trilogy, I did not sense that Fitz grows and gains wisdom in the third entry. Does this growth happen later in the series, or did I miss something?
@@Donkey_22 Maybe some people would disagree with me here, but my personal opinion here is that while Fitz does show growth as he grows older, at his core he is a stubborn (sometimes clueless) man. I don’t even make a distinction between teenage Fitz and adult Fitz, because his character traits continue on even when he grows older. I can’t explain in detail why I think this, because it would have to include spoilers for the later books.
What I will say is that if you were frustrated in Farseer, you might continue to be frustrated as you go on.
Fitz almost always made me want to grab him, shake him, and yell at him. He is infuriating, and sometimes tends to not consider other people’s perspectives. But I believe that that’s what makes him a memorable character - he’s human, far from perfect, but he’s got a good heart. And his life has been extremely hard.
NEWBOY!
OMG Molly was the worst lmao lmao
You should read my novels 'Castle Lochwind Savage Bloodline the Coming and the Sequel Castle Lochwind Savage Bloodline the Shifters! I'm a new author working on the third to make these a Trilogy! Thanks
I really hope these illustrated editions bring more attention to the Hobb and the series. I avoided the series because (like you mentioned) you don’t hear Hobb thrown out there with Jordan or Sanderson or even guys like Abercrombie. Plus the cover for the American paperbacks are terrible and generic, and the Farseer “Assassin” titles make it sound like your typical action-heavy, shadow-striking modern fantasy that are hit-or-miss at best. Picked up the illustrated Assassin’s Apprentice on a whim in January and now I’ve blown through Farseer and Liveship and just started Tawny Man. They’re great. The word you use “infectious” is right in the money for me.
Don't wait too long on the Liveship Traders please! It's too good and a whole different pace to Farseer especially with multiple POV.
I much preferred live ships, really enjoyed it.
I'm almost done with this book, and Molly is the only part I am enjoying, really.
I didn't like the molly fitz relationship either but I see the problem in both of them. What I also didn't unterstand was when she told him that Regal asked her if she's pregnant by Fitz and she's like shocked and all that he would think that they'd do the intercourse before being married or something and the next page or chapter they did fuck!? Like either stand to your morals or don't but it irritated me that she was so shocked by that and then does that like every other time they see each other
I think with the point of Molly and Fitz, they are young and headstrong and will do young foolish things. It's frustrating but it's also fairly realistic, if you think back & look at what goes on among youth relationships. :)
I disagree with you on some of this, I think you have to understand that this a first person perspective and an unreliable narrator. Also they are both very young in this, I think that is all part of the growing. I didn't find this a slow burn because I found all the characters well written enough to the point where I didn't notice it. I agree with the repetition though, however on the flip side it did help me get into fantasy as it meant everything was easier to follow. I would just read the books that follow Fitz, because if you think this is a slow burn, oh boy the liveship traders takes it to a whole new level where I would actually agree with the slow burn tag. Glad your going to continue though, keep up the great content.
Spoilers for a 20-year book. Fitz learned a valuable lesson; Molly is not the one. The only people he should care about are the women who visited him in the prison cell. The men who dug him out of that hole. And the brother who carried him for months. Everyone else is secondary, in my option. Last, he should have dealt with Regal when he and Shad almost ate that poisoned meat.
im currently reading the second book, about 70%, i had to stop a few times because the book is so infuriating, fitz only suffers, it almost never get better, it's only shit after shit, i almost stop reading, but idk, it gets better? or it's only extreme suffering.
I never liked Molly. Lol
This is pack.
I dont understand why, given how much credit Hobb gets for well rounded characters, one of the most important characters- the antagonist- is utterly one dimensional and just lazy design.
