Hey bookworms! I did have my years wrong. Westworld had already been filmed when the studio asked Crichton to write & direct Terminal Man. My bad!

This was the very first novel I ever read, outside of 100 page Goosebumps books. I was an 8 year old aspiring nerd who loved the heck out of Jurassic Park, and it was the only book that the library had in stock by Crichton. It took forever for me to finish, a lot of it went over my head, and I cannot say that I liked it. But it will always be the novel that started it all, and for that I love it.

Omg I had the exact same experience! I hardly even comprehended what I was reading when I read it 😂 I recently reread it, and it’s such a nice experience to finally understand the book😂

Michael Crichton maniacs, love it and proud of it 🙂. Sounds like we have a lot of the same thoughts on this one. Great video and great shirt, Mike. Looking forward to more Crichton with the read-along!

I think this was the fastest read ever for me. Two sittings and it read like a movie. The great train robbery is lined up.

The audiobook version as read by George Wilson was my favorite version of this book, so much so, I found an old library copy on eBay, and purchased it without a second thought.
I keep it readily in the glovebox of my car for any ad-hoc road trips.

The Andromeda Strain and The Terminal Man are so far the only Crichton books I've read, and I actually prefer The Terminal Man. Since it has, like you said, more action and less science, I did't fall asleep after 3-4 pages like I did when reading The Andromeda Strain. Now I'm really curious about The Great Train Robbery! Thanks for the read-along, Mike! And thanks for shouting out smaller booktubers in your last video, I'm now subscribed to the Media Death Cult :)

Agreed. Andromeda strain is decent enough but Terminal man is scary once shit hits the fan!

I got the sense that Crichton was taking a huge swipe at doctors who dismiss criticism from others of their ambitious plans and excessive confidence in themselves, especially administrators and surgeons.
And the absolute screw-up by the director of the NPS by (1) deciding on his own without consulting the team members which electrodes to initially lock in, (2) using ONLY written instructions to the nursing staff regarding Benson’s post-operation meds versus also verbally communicating such instructions to the head nurse, and assigning her the responsible to confirm that Benson received his proper meds given the high risk of his condition, and (3) not having set up a more rigorous post-operative monitoring system for Benson, given the risk and novelty of that operation. Overall, these protocol lapses invited a huge risk, and spoke volumes about the NPS director’s arrogance in managing that project.

I see what you’re saying about the characterization, and I agree that Harry and Dr. Ross were the only memorable characters, but I don’t think the story suffered at all for it. They were the only ones super relevant, and their characters were done well IMO.

I am typically a movie over book person but I read this book in jail and it scared the shit out of me. I will never see the movie or a remake because it couldn't be better for me personally
I'll forever remember the plane hangar scene and aftermath.

This was the first MC book I read and I was 13. I remember liking it quite a bit then. I had watched The Andromeda Strain movie with my dad on a Saturday afternoon showing on TV and we both loved it. Went to the library and grabbed The Terminal Man, The Great Train Robbery and Congo.
Congo is still my favorite MC book, with Eaters of the Dead in 2nd place.
Favorite MC directed movie though: Runaway. To this day, I can remember the mechanical spiders giving me nightmares.

Dude, I've been on such a Michael Crichton kick lately. Just recently reread Jurassic Park. Hadn't read it since I was 11!
Forgot so much about it. And also surprised by how much I remembered.

I read this book when I was on a Chricton kick when I was in 6th or 7th grade. I thought it was cool. Barely remember it though. No idea what I would think as an adult or what I would get out of it.
