  • Beginning with an explanation on the difference between thaumaturgy and theurgy (high and low occultism), Amir Mourad expounds the practice of Deity Yoga - and the potent device of using the image of a deity for inner transformation, uprooting particular emotional hindrances, and ultimately one's liberation.
He explains the risks and dangers involved in such an occult practice, why such secrecy has traditionally surrounded it, along with the tremendous significance of the understanding shunya (emptiness) and cultivation of compassion as safety guards in the practice of Deity Yoga.

I would be interested in seeing you discuss links between Paganism/non-Abrahamic religions and Dharma. Keep up the good work and God bless

I have received many requests to talk about Western Mysticism. I have talked about it several times in private with students, but will consider to document a series of discourses on the subject. ~ Amir

The emptiness that we all feel is from being one with the universe. And the universe is 99.9% empty 😂

You mention selfish purposes.... Where is the line between selfishness and reasonably caring for oneself? What about the idea of having self love and if you do not have self love, you cannot love others? Do you have to care for yourself before you can care for others? I am very much enjoying your teachings.

The line is in whether the ego has become exaggerated or integrated in the larger scheme of the psyche. Much depends on how enlarged one's perception has become. If your perception of space is narrow enough and you are looking at the Earth, the Earth may seem omnipresent as though it were the only singular reality when in truth it is a mere speck of light in the vastness of space. In the same way, if perception of the inner space has been narrowed - then the ego becomes magnified, and one defines one's entire being by it.
To integrate the ego - two things must occur. One is that one's perception must become enlarged so that the nature of consciousness, beyond egotism and attachment, becomes more clear. Another is that the ego must be made subtle, so subtle that rather than a master, it becomes a useful servant. So I do not teach annihilation of the ego. Even if it is illusory, it still has a useful purpose in that it helps you with your survival, and obviously survival is a necessary part of the experience of life.
As for self-love, one can only begin any journey from where one is, not from where one is not. If you have been living a life governed by egotism, then from that egotism you must learn to cultivate self-love. But the definition of "self-love" will change depending on where you are in the spiritual process. For a realized sage, "self love" is none other than love for Buddha Nature, and there is nothing which is not an expression of Buddha-Nature. Therefore, self-love and love for the other are not at all removed from each other - the firm divisions between the "self" and the "other" have been killed. That would be a very definition of "self-love" than for one who has remained in ignorance of the true nature of mind. But the idea is the same - first love what is most intimate and essential, and let that become a firm foundation for one's love towards others in the world.

In some sense these practices must have been discovered first by the crazy wise who had psychotic breaks thought they were Jesus or Buddha, not empty but were unstable - maybe having brief qualities of giftedness along the qualities of these characters, with certain things, while at many times completely delusional and unstable because they weren't ready, caught up in some synchronicity storyline playing out in reality attached to this character along with all the pieces of their trauma attached to their broken ego behind it. Potentially after some were gifted and disciplined enough to reapproach these experiences from a place of complete emptiness and compassion.
I've seen many gifted mad people have elements of these experiences and i really think there is amazing potential and bringing forth more beings if we were to pivot more to helping people whom already have fragmented egos and also shifting the Western model of mind.
I also think if we have this discussion more directly and up front about madness around realization, spirituality in the West, we can see much larger transformation on a much larger scale. I think there are a lot of things mad people could contribute much more quickly but at the same time might take a community of people supporting them.
I've spent several years working on this personally both with others in sometimes very dark depths and trying to stay grounded in my own experiences.
While I've seen some horrible, incomprehensible things, in regards to the path, it has seemed more aligned in helping those suffering the most also. I've also seen beautiful, profound, incomprehensible things enacted by the same people.
Are you familiar with ways we can apply this knowledge to support others in accidental fragments of these practices in those that are suffering and potential initiates?

Why would it be a bad thing to raise yourself to the consciousness of god like? Obviously at the end we know we are not God, but more god like. Self deluded , maybe , but also more powerful and ability to help people. Thank you.

All yogas eventually lead to the embodiment of a "god-like consciousness". This is neither good nor bad, such super consciousness may or may not be a vehicle through which radical wisdom may manifest. The danger lies not in super consciousness, but in the identification of the mind with it that leads to ego-inflation instead of weakening of the illusion of self. This identification can lead to mystic psychosis, messiah complexes, and various other mental illness. Namaskar ~ Amir
