  • Following multiple requests, here are some testing with the Ballistic Vest. Does it help against the cougar? The answer is... yes, but not in the way you expect. It's a lot to carry around for what it contributes.

Well, I hope Hinterland didn't get hate for how the cougar was implemented. This games community doesn't strike me as one to do that but I know just from reading comments alot of people were hoping the cougar wasn't going to be some event that just kinda happens. We were all thinking it was going to be something that left little hints and stuff around the map that let you know of its presence and that it was going to be a physical thing in the world. It wasn't nearly as immersive as the rest of the game nor did it really fit in, especially with the HUD elements of the cougar and how it gave you an exact timer on when it had a chance of attacking. I'm glad that Hinterland is a studio that listens to its players and is changing it even after such a short release but again, I hope Hinterland didn't get straight up hate/bashed for how it was done.

Which is funny considering thats not how cougars behave at all. They will always ambush they prey, if you spot them they will slowly prowl in like shark circling you and waiting till you drop your guard or turn away, if they get confronted they will then fight back but wont fight for real if they are not starving.
Best example being that one video of guy who is slowly followed by cougar so he has to walk backwards or it would pounce him.
They should have made this cougar like stalking enemy that you can attack and see, but it would camouflage very well or even use trees to ambush you.

I concur. Frankly the risk of death is so high as is that it's not worth the encounter with the cougar for a hat and knife. Severe lacerations is basically three days of sleeping in single hour increments burning through a fat stack of bandages while sitting on deaths door.
It's a good punishment for messing up, but the thing about the cougar attack is since it's a scripted event you don't get to mess up, you have to get mauled to kill it.

Thinking about it you're actually correct: just by reverting the concpt will make it totally fine for any hardened TLD veteran and make me quit any complaining.
Let the game make 3-5 special cougar sounds like e.g. a special roar, footsteps running towards you, sudden music drop etc. So you know this is the moment where you just have 2 sec (or so) to react quickly scanning the area 180° around you. then the cougar should charge you with the model runnning ultra fast. You only have a fraction of a moment left. If you miss - you get mauled exactly with the same intensity as it is. Done! Now it's a skill issue and not just a random event where you have 0 influence at.
Another idea - killing the cougar will only reset its appearance for half the time. In order to get rid of it for long period you need to destroy its nest.
      1. Game became harder; 2. It's a skill issue so "git gud"; 3. You have a quest to destroy the nest now (less boring end game)

Fought the cougar on full health, all metrics high, while wearing wolfskins, deer hide pants and boots, rabbit hide hat and gloves. Took about 40% off my health, fair reduction in clothing reduction, no need for first aid after, no severe lacerations. Was able to get a shot off with the rifle and drop it in the post attack sequence. I think the overall opinion of the community is that the cougar needs to be a actual in game creature, not a scripted event.

    • @equestrianrosie
      @equestrianrosie 14 дней назад +7

For me, it would depend just how much it protects your other clothing. The bleeds aren’t really a big deal if you have bandages on you and the overall damage seems to be the same. But protecting your other clothes from being ruined, that is very appealing.

In that third attempt (the one where you died unexpectedly) I think it might have been a wolf that you didn’t see that killed you. Right around when you die you can hear the wolf growl at 4:46 and some pain sounds, which I think might mean that the wolf initiated a struggle after the whole “shoot the cougar” sequence and ended up killing you.

I don't think the reason you died at 4:30 is the cougar 'returning' to attack the player, but the game's timescale fasts forwarded after the Struggle ended (and before you were allowed to stand up) and Blood Loss killed you because of your extremely low Condition. This happens for other Struggles, and a few other rare situations where the player faints (e.g. in Wintermute in several places and also Buried Echoes).
Easiest way to see this is by getting into a Wolf struggle right beside a lit campfire, and you can see how far the Campfire's fuel duration (or your Needs) decreases when the struggle ends. I'm not sure how much time fast forwards after a Cougar attack, before you're allowed to stand up again, but you had at least 3 Blood Loss (30% Condition loss per hour), and looks like ~5% Condition remaining, so it might be possible to calculate how long your character faints for from this, or at least the minimum.

TLD is the only game I play. I think Hinterland does an amazing job, but... they really dropped the ball on the cougar. There was SO much anticipation for this addition and it wouldn't have taken much to see what players were hoping for from it. With no ability to hunt it and no opportunity to engage it pre-attack I just don't see what it adds to the experience. It actually seems to run contrary to the basic premise of the game. I love being able to control the game; where I go, how long I stay, how I manage resources and how I survive amongst predators. I keep hearing a line from a Deep Space Nine episode, "Move along home". After watching yours and Dunn's videos I'd already decided to disable it on my runs. It isn't out of fear of it, I just don't like being directed or pushed. This one element completely changes the dynamics. I'm no longer in control of the games progress, the cougar is. In all honesty this has really annoyed me and if they hadn't provided an option to disable it I'd probably be looking for a new game. I sincerely hope Hinterland is listening to all of us. I don't care if the cougar doesn't come back till this time next year as long as it comes back as an actor in my play, not as a director. The soap box is now free.

It might be that the well-fed buff HP might help prevent severe lacerations if you're also at 100% protection, or that the Armored buff from the ballvest helped prevent SevLac and bleed on the chest, neck and stomach areas that were possibly targeted by the cougar during the struggle(or at least that's what the wiki says on the ballvest) by some chance. Once again, the ballvest and its enigma properties...
As for the return for the killing blow, yeah perhaps the cougar has the same coding as wolves where they will attempt to track you down at low hp.
Still, guess Ballvest is now a need *if* cougar items are a must have. That, or you just have to be really, REALLY prepped to tackle it.

Had 47% protection with the moose jacket and I didn't get the lacerations all 3 times, so I think protection helps a lot at preventing the injuries from the fight. Also the audio was bugged for me, I didn't hear any of the cougar sounds around the environment and during the attack it was literally just silent. Still think this is the worst possible implementation they could have possibly done. incentivizing the player to let themselves get attacked for a single shot at it is just such terrible backwards design. If it's supposed to be a region wide cabin fever then there shouldn't be a reward for killing it, if you're supposed to be able to kill it then it shouldn't be an event you have to trigger and actually exist in the world somewhere.

Did a fully armored test too against the Cougar, in Voyageur difficulty, using a maximum protection of 102%, and in the attack, seems like I lost about 40% hp and got no bleed or lacerations. And in other tests, it did take off 50% of my health and gave the debuffs. Not entirely sure how it works, maybe the cougar attack has an already scripted big damage no matter what you're wearing, and the ballistic vest could reduce the changes of getting bleed and/or lacerations.
I heard the Cougar got taken down temporarily for a rework, so maybe all of this will change or stay the same? We will see in due time.

If they reimplement the cougar as a actual predator in each reigon and instead make a sort of "cabin fever" associated with it or like a "paranoia" sort of infliction that progressivly gets worse when its in the area would be alot better of a mechanic.
Only giving you warnings until its literally ontop of you as a scripted event just takes away all the immersion of being hunted by something that wants you dead...
Even something like giving the player intense fear and making it harder to aim when the cougar is near you would make it more real feeling

@gregoryholtorf7874 Bears don't actively hunt you in the game, the whole point is the cougar is a bigger threat to you then the bears are because it sees you as food. Cougars are carnivores, bears are omnivores.

This is interesting that the cougar does the same damage no matter what your armour is. Just another reason to add to the heap that the cougar implementation was the wrong one and the Cougar Redux is needed. There is literally no action or precaution the player can take to mitigate or respond to the cougar, it's just an RNG affliction with an animation that can kill the player on pure RNG.

I think the Couger should only take interest in you once you start making a dent in the local wildlife like hunting deer/rabbits and maybe wolves? I just think the fact that it just becomes aware of you simply for being there for a certain time is just silly. Especially those who honestly like to settle down in one region and prepare for setting out into another, once you start taking some of it's food sources away it'll start stalking around the region looking for another meal or possibly you but it most importantly should be out there... wandering... stalking.... leaving clues and sounds to mess with your mind until the moment is right to strike, but if you do meet... don't look away and if another predator comes into play while this is happening... good luck!

The fact that this long-awaited monster turned out to be what amounts to a timer followed by an unescapable and unwinnable (you can only lose less badly) quicktime event is exceptionally frustrating. I understand the difficulty in accurately programming cougar behavior into a game that is almost completely devoid of physics, and Hinterland has had to make some concessions in the past to get things in the game...but this implementation feels half-assed even by those standards.
How about this: Instead of teleporting the cougar on top of you, teleport it nearby and make it invisible except for its footprints. It moves silently and rapidly, yet freezes in place if you're ever looking directly at it. However, even if looking directly at it, you can't see it. You must keep the invisible cougar in frame for a few seconds, and if you're looking in the right direction, it will fade INTO visibility. However if you're not looking in the right direction, well then the cougar isn't frozen and is probably sneaking up from behind.

I don't think lots of ppl get it why most of the community complains about the Cougar. We would conquer and farm it like everything else in looper. Thats would've been just matter of few days. Totally no issuse there. Its just that its badly implemented and porly made. As everyone already stated, way more was expected. Mostly that it does not exist in the world. Just spawns on top of you(QTE)
    Lame.
If you can't understand that, well not much can be said there. It was a really good move to remove it and work on it more. Frankly if it would stay the same it would be better to scrap it. Really interested to see how its gonna look in the end.

not necessarily. There is Old Bear which Hinterlands can repurpose. I know the attacks by the Old Bear were probably scripted to certain locations. But the game could just spawn the cougar in character vicinity and start the attack. In fact I faced few wolves spawn. Recently the one spawned in the new map in front of me just about 100 or 200 meters from me. The game knows what direction is your character looking. So the cougar can spawn behind you.

people complaining about it being disabled due to backlash (that was warrented)... tell me when it your right mind would you allow after the first time, having to expose yourself to an auto attack , you get warnings that its coming so its not even a surprise anymore, maybe jumpscare the first time if you didn't know, have to do a shooting slow time event and if you miss have to wait again and only counter is having full on body armor, additionally it spawns in a random location in a HUUUUUUGEEEEE map and have to use the exploding "cans to take it out " the den only to stop a timer. You can't hunt the creature in the wild, the mechanic is outright atrocious, the wait time on lower difficulties its weeks just to try, rather play nightwalker which is outright scarier than this piece of sh!t. After getting banned on steam for attacking a person bot, I have little tolerance for this BS after defending hinterland for long. I was going to turn this off when I heard how bs the mechanic was so they did us a favor.

They shoulde remove those st*pid housecat sounds, make it spawn in wooded areas or some logical ambush site like 20-30 feet away so the players have a chance to kill it before the attack.
And they shoulde remove the warning symbols/music and add footprints, droppings or hair patches of it around the area so you know that its around.
I mean its an apex predator that choses the place of an attack so i dont think that it woulde charge you in an open field. If i was a cougar i woulde attack at dawn or in bad weather conditions...
