If one of the women takes her rings off, she can support her head just fine. They actually complain about their neck being cold more than their head being heavy.

What if their necks get itchy? *rips of coils extremely fast and self demolishes* “Welp on to the next task, putting on new coils” *neck gets itchy again * -_-
nope. the neck and it's muscles do not lose their strength. actually what happens with this is the collar bone gets pushed down into the chest a bit. but overall there are no health risks associated with this practice. And they can remove them just fine if and when they need to (they have to polish the rings to keep them shiny. brass tarnishes and ages easily...)
Nacht Kind there are risks indeed. Because it does elongate their neck but not their bones, the necklace is actually the one that maintain their head if the necklace is as high as the one weared by the women on the video. If they put off their necklace, their neck bones will be so fragile that they will break causing their death. There have been many cases of women like this dying because they put off their necklace.
The ONLY bones it deforms is the collar bones. It does NOT elongate their necks just makes the appearance of so. and all reported cases of health issues due to it actually have other factors that are to blame. but yeah, go ahead and look at what bloggers say about it and believe them.
It doesn’t actually lengthen their necks in the sense that it makes them taller, what the rings do is push the shoulders and rib cage downwards, which is (obviously) bad for their health. I still respect what they believe in though.
Cameo Shadowness ...ok I dont know if you understand this concept but nothing gets longer shes the same height the extra length doesn't really count as a "neck" her shoulders. are just. lower. thsts it.
Heathen I don't think YOU understand. Those gold rings also have to push up on her head to be able to push down on her shoulders and such down. They're aren't heavy enough to do it on their own. This is what causes the neck to become longer. It's slightly longer at the moment beucase there aren't many rings but over time as she gets more rings, her neck would continue to get longer. The more her shoulders get pushed down, the longer her neck will become.
flightisallright wtf female mutilation do you know what that means??? Search it up! None of their p#ssy are being cut off once they get older they have the choice to take it off or continue. The narrator is wrong when she said once you put it on it stays on forever.
this may be painful, but when the history is explained it seems more like a cultural practice than a standard of beauty. they are doing this to honor their culture, it may be painful but if it’s a part of their lifestyle and culture i don’t see anything wrong with it.
“It wouldn’t hurt me if I took them off” Yes, yes it would you don’t grow any more vertebrae so your neck is not supported properly that’s why they never remove them it’s genuinely dangerous for them to
I saw another documentary on TV years ago where one of them actually did take the rings off and she was ok. She felt uncomfortable and wanted to put them right back on, though.
Not exactly optional they are pressured by the society and their cultures not to mention some of their parents start putting these rings on their necks when they are really small like 4,5 or 6
I'm skeptical. I mean in African countries girls genitals are mutilated, they think it's a journey to become a woman and proud of that, but that doesn't change the fact that it's barbaric and health damaging. We can also look at the corset, it was developed for a woman beauty, but turned out to be a disaster on a woman's ribcages. I think it's fine to respect other people culture, but to blindly accept it is wrong.
I honestly thought this was weird but then I thought about it and it’s their culture and since I’m navajo we have some traditions that others might think is weird too.
The Color Yellow gtfo the lady said it doesn’t hurt anymore which means she’s used to it.. who’d wear it if they knew it’d hurt? She must be forced or brainwashed to wear it when she was younger..
iDunno IDunno this is in no way self harm, the neck is not elongated, the clavicle is pushed down slightly giving the appearance of a longer neck, plus who are you to decide what is and isn’t culture, this is only practiced by those who are ethnically Kayan and not the whole population of Myanmar, this is just a simple fraction of Burmese culture which is highly diverse
Its there culture.. not torture. They do it on there own free will Edit: wooowww.. never got 1.3k likes on a comment before... Again this is MY OPINION. If you dont agree i could care less, go somewhere else and dont waste your time here, its stupid.
Taylor Carruthers yes, but it's very damaging long term. After a certain point, if they take the rings off, their neck can no longer support their head.
Tartaros • ever heard of a wedding ring? Your skin doesn’t just rot because there’s metal touching it. Also sweat would just come out on the bottom of the neck just as usual
It sounds disrespectful when the title says “ how woman torture them selves.” Obviously, I wasn’t brought up wearing that so I wouldn’t wear it but people don’t understand other people’s point of view and what they find attractive about them. Just spreading kindness. ❤️💕
@Megan Ziggler well it isnt really torture they aren't harmed the worst that can happen is if they take em off their necks would be really weak. But with therapy that could be fixed.
@Megan Ziggler yes that can be fix people have taken them off before and were mostly fine they can hold their head up just fine. Also did you know their was a culture in Egypt of wrapping a babies head to shape it ? The children were mostly fine and had no brain damage(unless in extreme cases).
Honestly I think these cultures and traditions are beautiful. They are not common in this generation and many people talk down on them for these traditions just because they are different than ours. The stories behind them are so much more amazing than people can see. This is beautiful.
Emily Mull nobody talks down on them because they’re different. And how is it beautiful to hurt yourself because of a culture? If you didn’t try to focus on how different they are and tried to focus on how self harming they are, there wouldn’t be any reason for you to think that as beautiful i hope
Macen Thompson damaging yourself for any of these reasons aren’t ok.. so that’s not an excuse at all. Actually that’s what i was trying to say this whole time. Anything causes pain shouldn’t be involved in culture. And yes, they’re literally hurting themselves and please don’t tell me you’re blind not to see it. I understand anything because they’re opinions, but how they don’t hurt and damage themselves for real? That woman’s basically worn that thing since she was 9 and she said that it hurt in the first place.. and my question is why would someone wear it if they knew it’d hurt and why would they accept it just because of their cultures? Nobody should be attached to their cultures blindly..
Spellcaster86 Actually its people like you thats whats wrong with this society. Just because you dont like what they are doing to themselfs on their own will doesn't mean you get to tell people how they should look or the circumstances why they should and shouldn't change how they look.
The amount of uneducated, disrespectful comments here is worrying me...it's the 21st century yet you can't accept another culture's different value? It might look unappealing to you, but no one is forcing you to do it? They aren't even forced to do this themselves, but choose to do so anyways because they want to. How is that different from getting piercings, tattoos, or ever plastic surgeries?
MIA. MIU THANK YOU! Also..there is I think one woman in america or the UK (i dont remember ) that does this aswell just for wanting a longer neck..and thats just plain stupid and has nothing to do with culture or religion. so people, please stop making fun of something embedded in another culture...
With all due respect, that whole neck thing is too much. They are messing with a vulnerable part of their bodies. The ones that already have their necks that way, their lives depend on those rings forever. I wouldn’t compare it to tattoos or piercings. All due respect to everyone of course.
Maybe not tattoos, but body modifications (extreme piercings and surgeries) are pretty much the same thing, yet people seem to have accepted that as the norm, so why freak out over this stuff? Depending on how many rings, there wouldn't be much damage. I'm not saying that it's safe, I've never done it, nor know anyone who has, but they have already decided to never take the rings off, so even if the neck cannot be supported naturally anymore, I do not see any problems.
You're not wearing them I don't know why you're complaining you believe this video because you don't need to be here someone is probably not holding a gun to your head forcing you to watch this to I don't know why you're hating in the comment section just go to a different video if you hate this video and if you hate their point of view and they hate their neck rings dragons bothered
Adrianna Gonzalez I'm not hating I just think it's weird and painful,I'm not hating geez, thanks for you time spending behind your screen writing a book😒
The title is so misleading it actually sounds pretty offending. I am from Myanmar but I’m not Karen and I don’t wear them but when I was in Myanmar I would see people wear them and I learned that it was cultural and I think that this video is misleading saying saying that woman torture themselves for beauty. They do for their CULTURE and SHE does NOT have the right to offend or try to offend other people’s culture. And if she doesn’t like them she shouldn’t have went there. And I know that stretching your neck sound pretty scary but we’re not the one doing it and we DON’T have the right to offend them. As I’m not just talking about this video and this tribe I’m talking about every tribe and every place in the world that we don’t come from.
So basically what you're saying is that it's OK to beat a women to death in Iran because she didn't wear her broqu and it is part of their culture? Very interesting
@@chloepatterson7419 It isn't a forced culture tho. I'm sorry if that happens in your culture. They don't punishing ppl through death. They aren't murderers. They actually want ppl alive

@@chloepatterson7419 but why bring in such horrible informations when it has nothing to do with this topic. The Padong tribe is not forced to wear rings around they're neck. However, those countries you listed are forced to wear them or they'll be punished. It is that countries problem. If that were to follow Qur'an and not kill the innocent.. maybe they'll be safe. However because there are dumb ppl in those countries, death and murder rises. 1. No one said it was okay to kill 2. This has nothing to do with Iran.... 3. Learn to read, rather state unwanted information 4. Your basically irrelevant
Omg , I met the same lady from the Karen tribe last summer in Chang rai Thailand. we were told by our tour guide that they cannot sleep with the rings on so the take them off. We were also told the younger generation is breaking the ring tradition. They were very nice and kind and some even speak a little English . We even had the change to try on the rings , there are super heavy 😀.The tours are allowed for them to make an income with there handmade products. A must see👍🏾
I can't imagine how painful it is to wear these rings your whole life and gradually keep adding. This truly amazes me how these women do not have severe back and neck pains. 👏👏👏

I mean we all have our definition of beauty, but forcefully stretching your neck out overtime in the span of years has got to do some serious damage to the bones and neck spine
Sorry but this is rude af. It's a culture, not a so called beauty trend. Plus, it's so disrespectful of you for being sarcastic towards the woman's husband, they value their myths and legends so put on your manner and try to understand things in their point of view. bs
it seemed rude to me but i couldn’t point a finger as to why. i heard her say that and i was like no you don’t say that to someone. the woman obviously took some offense to that.

I think it's a strong and beautiful choice that the younger girls/women chose to wear the neck rings and keep their culture and heritage alive. Then they can teach it to Their kids and so on. The rings don't actually make your neck longer though. They push down the clavicle and the ribs at a certain angle and that just makes the neck Appear longer than it is.

Theroarx -SG
It does make their necks longer. It forces their heads up at the same time.
Cameo Shadowness no, their necks arent any longer, their ribs and shoulders are just lower
Heathen
That MAKES their necks longer.
Cameo Shadowness ...ok I dont know if you understand this concept
but
nothing gets longer
shes the same height
the extra length doesn't really count as a "neck"
her shoulders. are just. lower. thsts it.
Heathen
I don't think YOU understand.
And I thought Tal’s neck was long

Yes, yes it would you don’t grow any more vertebrae so your neck is not supported properly that’s why they never remove them it’s genuinely dangerous for them to
You’re saying she’s lying? How would you know? Do you have the same neck rings too?
The rings do not stretch their neck. It pushes their collar bones downwards. So her vertebrae are not separated like you would think.
I saw another documentary on TV years ago where one of them actually did take the rings off and she was ok. She felt uncomfortable and wanted to put them right back on, though.
123 456 the neck doesn’t get longer... the rings push the shoulders down
ThePartyPaul SCIENCE!!
Why would they title this as torture...it's not nice but its fully optional but of course that doesnt create a good title does it?
Not exactly optional they are pressured by the society and their cultures not to mention some of their parents start putting these rings on their necks when they are really small like 4,5 or 6
It's alright as long as they are not forced to do so

I'm skeptical. I mean in African countries girls genitals are mutilated, they think it's a journey to become a woman and proud of that, but that doesn't change the fact that it's barbaric and health damaging. We can also look at the corset, it was developed for a woman beauty, but turned out to be a disaster on a woman's ribcages.
I think it's fine to respect other people culture, but to blindly accept it is wrong.

Megan Ziggler would you also consider high heels “torture” because it hurts to wear them even though women wear them voluntarily?
Thank you. It's essentially self torture turned into a culture.
Whether or not it's attractive it still comes with painful side affects so it's a torture for beauty
@Megan Ziggler yes that can be fix people have taken them off before and were mostly fine they can hold their head up just fine. Also did you know their was a culture in Egypt of wrapping a babies head to shape it ? The children were mostly fine and had no brain damage(unless in extreme cases).

@@jiminslostcheekfattm7259 ok opinions...for me not
@@reece4058 i know but for me this is not beautiful
Fay Fay still bad for you
Honestly I think these cultures and traditions are beautiful.
No. This is literally beyond stupidity. It's a fact.
Immoral, self mutilation, and pushing it on kids.
