My 10th grade English teacher Mr. Connell had the class read The Great Gatsby. It sparked my love of literature! I liked reading before, but I never read and connected to such beautiful writing.
I don't have a channel so I'm not going to make a video, but I still want to explain my story here! In my eighth grade English class, we were instructed to pick out a book from the school library that we would be journaling about and writing a book report at the end of the year. I originally wanted to be different than everyone else, so I asked if I could read a book from home. However, my teacher insisted that I read a class book, specifically Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. She told me that she really thought that I would like it, and to this day I'm not sure why she got that vibe from me, maybe I seemed like I could really relate to a character with intense social anxiety and a painful story to tell. Well, she was absolutely right. I chose to read Speak for my project, and I couldn't relate more to the main character. I'm so thankful that I decided to listen to my teacher and choose that book, because it's the first book that I ever labeled as a long-lasting favorite, and it's the reason I love emotional contemporary stories now. Four years later, it's still one of my favorite books!
What a great final challenge. So many of my book recs come from booktube now like I would've never read A.S King if it wasnt for ya Ariel or V.E Schwab if it wasnt for Jesse mentioning The Archived way back way. My offline rec was a friend sophomore year of college so 10 years ago now (yeez!) recommending I watch john & hank & therefore I read looking for alaska and paper towns (an old favorite forever and always), so yeah just wild to think about how different life would be if she hadnt told me about the vlogbrothers and this awesome internet community that I've gotten to have friends in after that.
It's funny when the book itself doesn't impact you so much but it still leads you to things. In I think 2014 (or 2015?) I finally picked up The Selection after everyone recommending it on the internet. When I went to the bookstore I saw another book I'd been meaning to read, Matched, and I debated which book I should buy (bc I wasn't gonna buy two at once lol). But I decided to get the one I came for (which was good bc although I love the poetic writing style in Matched, which I eventually read, it's pretty boring and I didn't finish the series). Anyway, I read The Selection and I loved it at the time. And then when I was on RUclips, I saw a recommended video and it was a review of The Selection, by polandbananasBOOKS. And I was like, people review books on RUclips??? So I started watching Christine. And then in 2016 Christine started writing her book and making her writing videos and sharing music recommendations from her playlist. And one she mentioned was 6/10 by dodie. At the end of that video, dodie's 6/10 video came up, so I decided to check it out. So that led me to listening to dodie, and listening to her led me to finding her friend Tessa Violet who's one of my favorite artists now (and her style has changed a lot since then). AND of course finding Christine also led me to reading her book which is exactly what I needed at this point in my life. So basically, even though I don't really like The Selection anymore, it led me to so many good books and music, and here on Booktube. Sorry for the novel lol but I think it's so cool how many dominoes that book set off in my life
I know I’m a day late but I still wanted to mention this book. Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. This book quickly became a favorite. I think I’ve read it like 3 times now and plan to keep rereading it
This was a fun challenge to film because I've had so many recommendations over the years but I finally went with one that really stuck with me!! ruclips.net/video/5cyg4xW5aY4/видео.html

Oh god, I forgot that Raeleen was the reason I picked up Golden Boy! THANKS GIRL, it also became one of my fave books of all time. 💚

I remember when Jesse reccomended The Archived, that was compelling. A life without Victoria in it, would be dark indeed.
Harry Potter
