    As a screenwriting and writing teacher, I focus on the positive and the pragmatic: Watching a clip like this is a waste of time because it's keeping you from focusing on your story, your characters, the organic development of your plot - Just focus on plot as a way to solve your Hero's psychological/moral weaknesses and your plot will evolve as your character's Desire/Goal evolves. Just focus on moral dilemma; moral choices that your Hero and Opponents constantly make as your story unravels to the Climax/Battle. Get to where you dream about your characters and their arc the story is developing. Get through the process; sequence the actions/reveals and sequence the entire story line. And finally, start to write. When you've crafted a great story, you will know it. It will sell.

    every writer has a unique story and personal experience with the business. The idea is Write, rewrite (as needed) and send it out, and keep doing it again and again. Perseverance and knowledge are main ingredients. You have to love the process! Even Shakespeare was rejected !!

    Much of this video is eye opening and informative. A decent chunk of it speaks to making and cultivating connections to get your finished product in front of decision makers. Most writers are introverted, and shy from the marketing aspect of their work. I assume most writers don't live in L.A., so this video confirms to me that the one foolproof way to succeed is to write things that are better than anything out there, get your finished projects into competitions to generate exposure, and keep grinding (and maybe find representation using your world-class writing). It's just that simple - or difficult, depending on your point of view. Seems simple to me because ultimately, it's all about the undying passion of creating compelling content.

    I think that the message of the first script has not been constructively given on this video - I do understand what they're saying about finding the voice and it will take time - there have been success stories - so please everyone who wants to be a scriptwriter here do not give up on your dream / work hard and let your talent shine x

    Chris, we do appreciate you taking time to comment. Like to hear more because it is not our aim to discourage anyone. We've all been discouraged by people (some well-meaning and some with agendas who just want to shoot a poisoned arrow). For the future reference, how can we have a more encouraging but truthful video series without as you say "snobby elitism," but a helpful dose of skepticism instead?
    Telling someone the journey will be difficult and put time in to do research is what we thought was conveyed? No? If no, our apologies. How was this misconstrued?

    • @kurtpeterson4193
      @kurtpeterson4193 6 лет назад

      RUclips comments are a snake pit of mediocre, immature people. They snipe and cry anytime you don't tell them what they want to hear. Things like perseverence and hard work don't seem to appeal to a lot of them.

      I think what they meant by it was that you need to polish your work because it might not have all the basic characteristics like capitalization or sensible character change in action or dialogue that readers and agents want. It can be taken as negative but I think what they are emphasizing is just be realistic with your expectations. You can write it but it's not up to you whether you get paid for it. It's up to whether a production company wants to buy it!

    It took me a year to write my first screenplay. It is not a masterpiece, but it is better than most of the junk I see on Netflix and the other movie channels. At least I tried to say something about the human condition beyond just entertaining people. It took a lot of effort and diligence to write that manuscript. And regardless of what anyone else thinks of it, or whether it ever gets produced, I sure as hell would never have finished it if I had thought of it as "just an intellectual exercise."

    Probably the most edifying compendium of scholarship ever assembled on the fundament upon which the art of film is shrugged or architected. It's like reminding the audience that classical ballet is predicated upon the ballet barre. Most audiences haven't a clue that those utterances are derived of the writer's soul. This spectacular video clip belongs in the annals of film academia. I hold a Master's degree in film/Tv and I had never had quite this arc of wisdom in one place, so simply, so generously offered, so FREE. Bravissima!!

    Way to discourage new writers! Best way to keep your role where you are, I guess!
    You can absolutely sell your first script, if it is very good. Just like any script. Make it as good as it can be!

    • @filmcourage
      @filmcourage  6 лет назад

      Rather tell the truth and prepare people or no? What was your experience like selling your first, second or third script?

    • @chrisdvine
      @chrisdvine 6 лет назад +3

      Sure tell them it will be hard, but if you put the work in, do your research, make numerous drafts, and network well, there is no reason that a first script can't be a success.
      Honesty is fine, but outright discouraging new writers should not be the desired impact of these videos. People wont finish scripts, or put a full effort into a project that they believe is doomed to fail from the outset.
      I appreciate the work that is put into this series, but this was screenwriting snobby elitism at its worst. I hate to say it.

  • @Damacles9
    @Damacles9 4 года назад

    My take away was that one should write the best first screenplay you can, then write a few more -- build a portfolio to offer immediately upon any agent/studio/actor or actress interest. Be prepared at a moments notice to deliver samples of your work -- your calling card, your voice. Keep writing. Never let the bastards grind you down. NO is an opportunity to learn and improve. YES is an opportunity to learn, improve, and build more relationships. Always be learning. No response is not a NO, it is an invitation to ask again. Move to L.A. to build face to face connections, and/or use social media if you want/have to live elsewhere. It is truly "who you know" -- be known. Prepare yourself mentally for rejection and for success -- have an inner plan and motivation for your outer objectives. Write every day, hone your craft: "Love all, trust few, do good"; be the best you can be in all areas of self. Stay positive, forgive yourself, and always keep trying until they pry your pens from your cold dead hands. Good luck!

    Just my opinion: I'm in Act 3 of my life and gearing up to write again....To protect my future works I'm adapting screenplay to book and publishing my stories first. I was warned several times that Hollywood is a very close knit community and doors are not so easily open to agents and producers... Maybe Hollywood Studios should open the door to creators and cut $$ deals with them to pitch only and then turn over these projects to their more experienced film writers. Ideas cannot hold copyright...just saying.

    Hey I'm 15 and I'm looking to become a film maker in the future. I'm still learning how to write and format screenplays and I was wondering if I could read anyone's scripts just to get an idea of what most screenplays are like

      Garrett Popejoy Go to Simply Scripts and find a PDF screenplay. Try and find a more recent movie that's not written by a director, that should give you a great insight on flow, framing devices and overall tone of today's scripts.

    i dont agree with contests. I doubt scripts such as pulp fiction or sling blade would place on those contests, considering how unconventionally written those scripts are. An idiot reader would probably pick up those scripts and say "this is proposperous, the blocks of dialogue.. just ridiculous.. who would make this? hahahahah"
    Then those same scripts they rejected end up winning oscars.

    Why are they all so negative? They keep saying that they don’t know anyone who sold their first script. They must not have heard anything about Sylvester Stallone and how he sold his first script for “Rocky” (1976)

    @Dariuswilliams if that is submit them to competitions. you can copy write them at wga.org, but if you want them read and known and possibly passed to someone who has the slightest bit of "power", submit.

    I get really discouraged when i hear "its about who you know not what you know". Why it is always like that? I mean EVERYWHERE... so what about brilliant people who live faraway from LA and have no connection in the Hollywood world? should they quit ? Should I quit just because I live in a small city in a small state ?

    This is negative talk from the cut throat Hollywood self preservationist. Just think about all of the uninteresting, boring crap on TV . Writing is a artform and every artist is different. So why should I write the way someone else writes simply because their script was purchased? Just work hard and stay consistent. Selling your first script is irrelevant.

    I watched for the first 9 minutes.. what I got out of it, other than negativity is... the film industry seems to resemble the structure of America... "good old boys club" not willing to embrace change, stuck in it's own way... but if we would have asked these same people in 2007 if a black man runs for president, would he stand a chance... all these same people on camera would have said.. no, no way .. not the first one, maybe the 9th or 10th black person could succeed but never the first one.... moral of the story is, if it's great its great... PERIOD..

    Reading the comments here I'm guessing half of you never trained. These writers aren't negative. They are truthful. They've been there. They sold, still, they have a day job... That makes you wonder why they're advising you to concentrate mainly on your work, not the sale. The spelling here sets my teeth on edge as well 😭 Confidence is great, but not when gift wrapped in mediocrity. Sorry amigos

    What about to do video games of off your script?

    • @jjkhawaiian
      @jjkhawaiian 6 лет назад

      I'm thinking "Uncharted", "Silent Hill", etc. Of course, that is a good market, I suppose, and to me it's growing. You still have to work within the premise of the actual video game. That means game programmers, producers, and graphic artists are all part of that beginning process before they even need a writer.
      Once it gets to that point, it's the same as anything else. They probably give out a call for writers to write the script. It goes on from there, so there may be lots of rewrites before it actually makes it to the VG. there are actors, sound engineers, directors, sound studios, etc before it's a completed project.

    I liked Richard Walters advice the best, don't write the screenplay TRYING to sell it. That will ruin all sense of creativity. These other people are almost telling you the opposite which is annoying as hell. Working on scripts over and over until they seem like they're what hollywood is looking for sounds like the formula to make another shit blockbuster that everyone outside the production office knows is gonna be shit or bomb completely. Hollywood's arrogance is infuriating, they are still mostly just a bunch of old (not gonna mention race but we all know it starts with a J) people who are so out of touch with society they didn't even realize Asians could make movies that weren't about Kung Fu till about last week.

    'Donald Kaufman' sold 'The 3' for $1.5 million, first and only script he wrote...

    • @jjkhawaiian
      @jjkhawaiian 6 лет назад

      It happens, but very rare. And who did Donald know? How did he get his script in front of someone? How did he hone his craft? Did he go to college for being a writer? How much did he write before that? How long did it take for him to actually sell that script?
      Someone can say, "Yes, they sold their first script right off the bat". However, i"m sure it's a 1 out of 2,000,000 chance your are going to do that as a first time writer. It's definitely not the norm, but can happen.

    ET. Is the easiest read ever. But no script is "holy shit" awesome to read. It's just little bits of ink on a white piece of paper. and the first studio turned down ET .. it was a pass...
    but in competent hands it was THE highest earning film ever (at 4% inflation).
    some people like Scripts. but it's random. The dumbest script in the world (not bad just not great) will seem really awesome to somebody who likes movies about clowns who kill people, or just really interested in a kid who hast to move several times but eventually finds a young love interest ... If you like the genre, you might love the script but there's no guarantee. So it's a business of log lines, if they even let you in the business, do you have a grandmother that used to live in Europe? Maybe you could be in Hollywood.
