The thoughts of ants protesting with pitchforks and placards really made me smile! 😂 I'm really not sure about the future for us VO artists with the development of AI voices. The current AI opportunities for voice actors are vast - but as these AI voices get harvested and perfected over time, those opportunities will dry up as the technology will have all of the resources it needs. The only glimmer of hope I can see right now is that some big companies see AI voices as 'non-premium' and want their product to be advertised by a real, human voice. However, if that attitude changes, we're in trouble!
After a couple of times where I put my trust in people who took my hard work and left me behind once my presence was no longer convenient for them, I'd feel better with more possession and control.
I would possibly be amenable to a setup where I have a copy of the program and only I have the voice files to teach it to use my voice, all on a thumb drive in my own possession so nobody else has those files to try something with. At that point, it would be like being able to say I have Source-Connect. It's something I have that can make things more convenient for the customer. I can then promise to deliver with AI speeds or offer different prices if they opt for my AI voice instead of my actual voice. But the ability for a company to say "Z won't notice if we use their voice for this" is MUCH reduced because even my AI voice would have to come FROM ME.
I don’t like the idea of AI for VO at all. This is just my take. My concern would be the stealing my of voice, or “likeness” to be used without my permission and without compensation. That’s part of the reason SAG had the strike. Your thoughts?
He mentioned at the -10:01 timestamp of this issue. He says that as long as there is no BUYOUT of his voice or an entity that doesnt use his voice with his permission, than it is okay. If it is done a certain way, with the VO artist's consent, and they get compensated for it, then this would be considered streamlined income. It's passive income. But you would need to do this with a reliable, credible entity or company. Otherwise, it is a legal issue.
You're right Dave. It's already happening. There are youtubers who are already making new songs using Taylor Swift's voice. They put a disclaimer that it is AI, but when you hear the song, you think its Taylor and forget about the disclaimer. And it is without her consent. Because one of the songs is about her breaking up with her current boyfriend which is not funny. They are making fun of her personal life using her voice which is sad. And their RUclips channel gets a boost because of the content of the video, and Taylor is not getting paid for it 😔.
@@stacieharris Hey Stacie, wow, that’s bad and should not be legal. Thanks for sharing.
I think if you own the rights to your voice, that is fine. The issue arises when companies try to gain unlimited use. I believe you have the right idea about this.
Great insights, Bill, as always!
I’ve considered this in the past. However, all of the platforms online that I’ve came across have in their usage terms, that like you explained here, own the rights entirely to your voice. Are there any websites you recommend for the newer narrators to look at that give you the ability to provide clients with an ai version of your voice while still maintaining the rights?
I am conflicted over the whole AI issue/debate. I here what you are saying, Bill; but I've noticed what @michaelwheelervoiceover shared. Could you share more about how you navigate all of this? It's really a big deal for us, and we've come to trust your input and direction in these v.o. matters.
Since AI is part of your business, will you be teaching the ins and outs of it like you do the rest of your business? I would be interested in learning what is involved in making one's voice an AI voice, along with how to control who and how it's used.
