      It is called mica, it looks a bit like glass it was used in the doors of wood stoves at the turn of the century, it resists high temp that would break glass.

    • @PrayerRider
      @PrayerRider Год назад +11

      It was probably found buried in the ground somewhere or in a dump. Back in the late 19th or very early 20th century, people used to bury their old broken junk, ie, pots, pans, rugs, utensils, in the ground. I have found such things where I used to live as it used to be farmland before it was developed into city neighborhoods.

      @@AntiqueVintageRestoratioNs good point but to be honest even that guy would had to have said it was trash. You did the impossible and I love it. Pieces like that was made to last a lifetime. Now the new stuff is just junk. No one takes pride in what they make unless it is the small business owners that make it by hand. Those are the ones I seek out, sometimes quality is worth the extra price because it will be around a long time instead of a few months.

    I am curious about the layer of mica (looked like glass) that was within the iron. It doesn't seem like you addressed replacing it. I didn't know what it was before reading the title! It looks like a statue of a mounted horse 😂. What a find and it still works ❤. Think of the hours and hours of the woman who held it. All her thoughts and feelings are in it. Her soul.

    That things so old it be looking like Bootstrap Bill Turner, fresh out of Davey Jones’s locker.

      Your analogies are excellent. There are many materials from the years Davey Jones lived. As long as you search and find.🙂

    Not asbestos, that's mica. And it's not a heating element, it's a mineral used for electric and heat solation. Actually, but removing it, you're risking an electric shock if touching the metal. And it really looks like that with thin frail layers. It's a beautiful mineral actually. Look it up 😉

    Painting over the handle instead of using varnish was painful to watch. The rest of the restoration was great.

    Its plaster or plastic painted like wood look in the cracked paint or the paint protected it from more damage.

      Yes, the outer surface is very poorly coated. The chamber has resulted in the preservation of wood. Perhaps if it had been exposed it would have rotted more and could not have been saved.
