  • FIP is a progressive, fatal disease that may develop in cats following infection with a coronavirus. This session, given by Elizabeth Berliner, DVM, MA, DABVP, will provide an overview of FIP, covering disease transmission, clinical signs, and diagnosis as well as providing an update on new research that may lead to improved diagnostic testing and treatment in the future. Management and prevention of infection in shelter environments is emphasized.

MY TYLER, lived (15 yrs.) with FIP. Indoor only, well fed, finally neutered. Had pneumonia when he came inside. It was good food and love that kept him alive.

My kitten Alvin was diagnosed with FIP in February. The vet originally did not suspect it because he was experiencing neurological symptoms and she was not familiar with that being a symptom of FIP. He passed away within days of his first recognizable symptoms. FIP is a terrible disease and I hope we are able to eradicate it some day. We vlogged much of Alvin's life and are so happy to have those memories of him. We finally decided we are ready to get another cat and got our new baby Marco. He seems healthy as can be so far so we are hopeful that FIP is behind us.

Hi I also just lost a kitten to what the vet suspects is FIP. He also presented only with neurological signs, and died within a day of the onset of seizures. He had no fever on intake, and had a cyclical fever from then out. He never really regained consciousness after the onset of seizure clusters. Thank you for your comment and your videos about Alvin. It was helpful for me.

We just lost our second cat to FIP wet form on 7/2/18. Prior to the recent death of our beloved pet we lost a kitten to FIP dry form six months ago. The two kittens came from different shelters and we believe the kitten that died six months ago brought it with her. We have a cat left and pray to God he will not die next.

Hello Whyntir and thank you for watching. We are so sorry about your cat. Research has shown that the best way to prevent the other cats from contracting the disease is to keep clean their living area, food and water bowls, and litter box. An article from the Cornell School of Veterinary Medicine states, "Cats with FIP are often treated with corticosteroids, cytotoxic drugs, and antibiotics. Supportive care may also include fluid therapy, draining accumulated fluids, and blood transfusions. Research is ongoing to find other immunosuppressive drugs that may slow down the progress of the disease. Attempts are also being made to find antiviral drugs that will prevent or slow down the replication of the virus. One promising approach currently being studied combines both an antiviral agent and an immune response modifier.
In multiple cat environments, keeping cats as healthy as possible and minimizing exposure to infectious agents decreases the likelihood of cats developing FIP. Litter boxes should be kept clean and located away from food and water dishes. Litter should be cleansed of feces daily, and the box should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected regularly. Newly acquired cats and any cats that are suspected of being infected should be separated from other cats. Preventing overcrowding, keeping cats current on vaccinations, and providing proper nutrition can also help decrease the occurrence of FIP in groups of cats.
There is only one licensed FIP vaccine available; however, this vaccine has minimal if any effectiveness in preventing FIP, and it is not generally recommended by the American Association of Feline Practitioners Feline Vaccine Advisory Panel. Primucell FIP, produced by Pfizer Animal Health, is a temperature-sensitive, modified-live virus vaccine that is given as an intranasal vaccine, and is licensed for use in cats at least 16 weeks of age. The vaccine appears to be safe, but the risks and benefits of vaccination should be weighed carefully. Cat owners should consult their veterinarian to help them decide if their cat should be vaccinated."
Have your vet check out the other cats for symptoms of FIP.
Disinfection of your home is very important. You can watch videos about disinfection on our website here: www.maddiesfund.org/search-results.htm?q=disinfection&cx=008247662567946873345%3Apozorpuwyo0

Need your opinion please. Three 10 week old kittens (the first from a different litter, and the other two sibling brothers from another litter) that I rescued and entrusted to a rescue organization to find fosters or adopters for wind up having to be euthanized for FIP within 7 months of each other. Is this not statistically unusual and suspicious?
I know from early photos that I took that these 3 kittens were kept in the same cage. The first kitten to develop FIP, she says, was confirmed on necropsy. Is this just a run of bad luck, or do you think keeping the two sibling brothers in her garage for 7 months, with no opportunity for socialization, minimal attention and care, and other stressors, contributed to the coronavirus mutating? Note that there were 3 other siblings to the two brothers, who were only in her possession for 12 days before I took them for fostering and socialization who are all healthy and got adopted. I had the two brothers -- they were sick and a mess when they were given back to me for fostering and socialization, and I painfully witnessed one decline with ataxia and urinary incontinence, and the other I did get adopted through another rescue org. and his adopters had to witness the same.
This has been a very painful experience for me. I blame this rescue org. person for keeping these kittens in her garage for 7 months and thus compromising not only their sociability but health. I think if they had gotten out to foster (I could have done it) they would have been fine. I don't think it was just a run of bad luck. She will also not answer to any of this and has behaved very dishonorably. She just blames it on FIP.
    Thank you for any input.

Hello Raja, if you have not taken your kitten to your veterinarian, please do so. More information about this disease can be found on the Cornell University School of Veterinary Medicine's website www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/Health_Information/brochure_ftp.cfm.
Here is a quote from that webpage: "Unfortunately, there is no known cure or effective treatment for FIP at this time. Some treatments may induce short-term remissions in a small percentage of cats; however, FIP is a fatal disease. Treatment is generally aimed at supportive care, such as good nursing care and nutrition, and alleviating the inflammatory response of the disease. Cats with FIP are often treated with corticosteroids, cytotoxic drugs, and antibiotics.
One promising approach currently being studied combines both an antiviral agent and an immune response modifier."

      O sorry,

      Alvast hele grote dankjewel
      Groetjes
