I SEE A LOT OF PRECURE I'M SO HYPED PRECURE IS SO UNDERRATED IMO AAAAAAH!!!
I'm super excited to watch more PreCure! It will be a looooong time before we get there in the timeline, but to date I've seen both versions of PreCure 5, Fresh, and some of HeartCatch, and had a great time with all of them. Really looking forward to getting around to the original FwPC and other series in the franchise!
ErynCerise Oh I'd definitely recommend watching Heartcatch, Go! Princess and Futari wa Precure Splash Star! The former two have some of the best stories in the franchise while Splash Star, even though it's underrated, is my personal favourite season.
CurePlum Splash Star is really good. It's one of my fav too.
ErynCerise Precure is barely talked about in the Western anime community and I would love more people to know about it.
I've only watched Mahoutsukai so far (from last year), and it was way way better than I expected! I started Kirakira a while back and intend to finish it at some point, and I have interest in watching both Go! PP and FwP but I don't really know much about the others, like which people say are the best and so on. Precure is also the thing I am most looking forward to being covered in this series!

Tbh I was a bit wary about you branching out from Love Live, since that's what introduced me to you, and you've honestly been such a great idoltuber and that made me wanna stick around and see what this next projects of yours is going to be. And honestly, I am so glad that I did! This looks like so much fun, both for me to watch and for you to make, and while the magical girl animes I watched can pretty much be summed up in Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch and Sailor Moon, I've been very eager to branch out, and I'm super thrilled about watching this series and learning more about one of my favorite genres of all time! I probably wouldn't even be a fan of anime and I wouldn't be who I am now if it wasn't for these two shows I mentioned, so I'm very excited about this!
Also I wish I could support you on patreon and such, but sadly I'm still just a poor high school student 😂

AHHH! I'm really excited for this. But a bit of a question, Does Princess Tutu fit these requirements and break them? I mean techniqually Princess Tutu isn't a "Typical girl" and lives in a high fantasy world, but she still does go to dance school and appears as a normal girl surrounded by fantastical elements. Such as the cat being a teacher. (im being as vauge as possible for those who haven't seen the show) It's one of my favorite magical girl shows and it's kinda in the middle between both requirements. She is a normal girl who goes to school but at the same time isn't, and she lives in a hiigh fantasy world but at the same time doesn't..It could be possible that I am overthinking this, but my experience with Magical girl shows has usually been the ones most subversive to the genre so I can get a bit mudded in my thought process. (Also powerpuff girls Z was a thing... is that also a thing with this... ? Also.. the lilo and stitch anime, does that count? )
I think it's borderline like Little Witch Academia and Akazukin Chacha, but close enough to count! Like you said, she appears as a normal girl, and for the most part other people in the world aren't that aware of magical goings-on (even if some of them are literal cat and anteater people), so I think that's wiggle room enough IMO. Plus she is generally accepted as a magical girl in most standard lists of shows in the genre, which is usually what I'll be using to decide borderline cases like that.
And yes, Powerpuff Girls Z is totally a thing and it totally counts IMO. ;)
BellyThat Productions Princess Tutu definitely counts. Personally, not every magical girl has to hit every bulletpoint requirement most have. For example, Ririka from Ririka SOS does not have a familiar/mascot character leading her, but she does have a prince helping her out instead. Tutu has a alter ego and magical powers that make a huge impact on the story, setting, and plot. While the fandom does have differing opinions what counts in the genre a lot, I haven't seen anyone claim Princess Tutu isn't one.

When you mentioned phrases, the first thing that popped into my head was the "unlock" catchphrase from Shugo Chara. I haven't seen that anime in years, yet I still remember the transformations!
I'm super excited for this series! Already, everything looks so nice, and I'm sure you'll do a wonderful job explaining everything, Miss Cerise! My younger self wanted to watch all the Magical Girl anime, but never did, so this'll be a good chance to pick up watching the genre again.

Magical girls are wonderful. Their history is very interesting, it's good to know their origins and evolution. From Sally (1966) to Matoi (2016), passing by Cutie Honey, Sailor Moon and Sakura, so many stories to watch or read.
Yay I been waiting so long and now its here~! RIP with all those neverending PreCure series. Nice mention of Fresh! my fav. Makes me wonder if there will be a mention of the new Glitter Force dubs in this series.
Also I hope for an episode or mention with Princess Comet/Senorita Cometa (not the anime 90s series but the 60s live action/slightly animated show) That's a classic that needs to be talked about more as many consider it the second magical girl series ever made. Also it is my mom's childhood show. XD

Since the drama is mostly live action, there won't be a full episode until we get to the later Cosmic Baton Girl Comet-san anime. But good point that it probably does warrant at least a mention in the early episodes alongside stuff like Sally and Akko-chan! I will see if I can fit in a brief mention into the Sally episode.
Ahh your new avatar design looks so cuuute. I’m really looking forward to this series despite the fact I’ve yet to watch most Magical Girl series. I will say I chuckled a little when you gave us the definition of the genre because I’ll never get over the fact that the Japanese dub of the 4th generation of My Little Pony series is considered a magical girl series. No clue how that got around but I could also see how. It’s strange to me but funny.
Yeah, I was a little confused when I saw that the Japanese dub of MLPFIM is considered a magical girl show.
Hahaha, I could see that considering Lauren Faust originally pulled from magical girl tropes for the creation of the series! But yeah, by the definition and restrictions I've set for myself, MLP would not be covered in the main series. If I ever look at it, it would be as a bonus episode, like I said.
But yes, I hope you enjoy the series! I'm writing it with new fans in mind, so it should hopefully be easy to follow even without knowledge of the genre. Especially since the first several episodes are going to be about shows almost no one in English fandom has seen, not even avowed magical girl fans! 😛
I love magical girls so much and i'm so salty over how madoka, despite being good, caused a veil of assumptions and trends to hang over the genre like wet smelly laundry so having a sereis that discusses the history and trends of magical girls is super exciting, i've been waiting so long for you to start putting these out there! it's super promising so far
Finally somebody makes a good clear video on youtube what counts as a magical girl anime or just a magical girl animation in general! A lot of fans of the genre, if I can even call it that, have grown tired of people miscategorizing it as just cute shows where an underage girl (usually) in a mini skirt fights monsters with sparkles and love. The "genre" includes so many wonderful titles but they can be ignored by the majority of viewers due to the prejudice of "oh, it's one of THOSE series".
And to boot, you plan to cover EVERY single mahou shoujo anime! Seeing this video, I can safely predict you will go into each one with a lot of care and research. SourcererZZ did such a list yet stopped years ago and he barely touched upon each series. Still, he was the 1st on youtube to make such an attempt, he introduced me to a bunch of new mahou shoujo anime and I am sure he can help you with your list. :) For years I have also been making such a list of my own but aimed to make it a picture list like the few others out there rather than a video series. I also wanted to make a video essay discussing in great depth what exactly is a magical girl show but here you made it very clear so there's no need for me :D Good luck on the journey!
I've been looking for something like this! Ever since watching Sailor Moon as a little kid, I've been magical girl trash, so I'm glad RUclips recommended this video. I'll be eagerly waiting to watch more of this series!

AHH! This is so exciting! Even if I do have to say my knowledge of Magical Girl shows doesnt go too far (Sailor Moon, Madoka, Cardcaptor Sakura, Utena... Kill la Kill and Little Witch Academia if they are counted maybe??) that actualy makes this even more exciting because Im going to be learning so much about a genre of anime that Ive never given that much of a chance! I appreciate what you are doing with this series , it's a labour of love although from my perspective there's a couple things you can do to make the series more approachable in the RUclips system .
I once did a series on old toei films when my channel was much smaller, this is what I learned.
Remove the number from the title, by calling it part 1 or 2 you are limiting the series watch potential as most don't want to start halfway through(but will, first ep i saw was the mermaid one). Although in a series like this I think pushing the playlist and putting the year in the title would help more (it did for me)
Shortening the title , right now your titles are wayyyyy too long for the system I can't see it all in the preview. In my opinion the titles should be more : Sally The Witch (1969) | A History of Magical Girls or SALLY THE WITCH - Mahou Profile.
Third is thumbnails I appreciate that you have an artist doing your thumbnails however I feel they are not pushing for what youtube needs. Which are close ups (faces are key) , simple blocking, bold colour pallets with optimal text. On my side bar I can see the Sally the Witch thumbnail and for its size theres a bit too much going on for it to be read properly. I'd also advice against putting text in the bottom right corner because the timer blocks the ability to read it.
The forth thing is more of my own preference but it's one I think creators should be doing more, because it benefits everyone. Cite all your research in the description. It helps freaks like me find research and makes your work source-able, I find it hard to take information from people on the internet in good faith, which makes me less inclined to share it unless I know they've sourced their stuff.
Anyway I hope this series does well it might be a long road but I could see episodes on Sailor Moon or Precure explode. Not enough people talk about Magical Girls in an in depth way, I've always liked the idea of making a video on the shoujo revolution of the late 60s , ever since I read a write up about it in an illustration magazine I used to be subscribed to.

This is honestly one of the best projects I have been privileged to watch! Magical girls are so important to a number of women with the strength they provide. I love that you'll be making a series showcasing this and how much they truly matter. Magical girls deal with so many mature subjects and so travel to so many difficult places in order to genuinely provide insight and that alone makes them some of the best shows I watched as a kid and more so as an adult.
The empowerment and validation that it provides women and girls can not be measured and the fact that that magical girls seek to strengthen what is traditionally ridiculed is what makes this genre so special.
I am so looking forward to what you do here and what you can provide. You've always been so sweet, genuine, and informative with previous work and I deeply believe in this project and trust that you can pull this off. You got yourself a new patreon supporter, I hope it helps.

I'm really excited to see this series, I know the general history of the genre but I've never looked into it in depth. And just seeing the panels of shows reminded of shows I watched ages ago and had forgotten about, like Shugo Chara and Magical Mew Mew Taruto! And I can see how Akazukin ChaCha is borderline but I'm glad to see it on the list (admittedly, the manga is even less mahou shoujou than the anime - they added a ton of MS elements in the adaptation). This is super ambitious but super exciting, can't wait to see more!

ErynCerise well yes. For earth. Sorta. A decent amount of the time space administration came from earth. Combine with it dropping magical girl later on and the mention of laser trope without the goddess of lasers. Was in the ballpark

I am so excited to watch this series! Besides Sailor Moon, I also grew up watching Mermaid melody and Shugo Chara. I'd sing the songs from them so much it was embarrassing! I have two animes I'd like to bring up: Princess Tutu and Inuyasha. I guess Kagome is a girlfriend but she does have magical powers(?) also I love Princess Tutu. However no one ever seems to question her powers given the world they live in. I do hope Tutu gets featured since she is a very interesting concept! Love you, Eryn. Can't wait for more!

Hentai in Manga has a wider variety then Animations.
My problem with Magical Hentai Anime is that they're all Tentacle Rape basically. There are none are just cute sexy Yuri stories. You can find those in PreCure Doujins, but not in Animation.

Mostly because I may have screamed when Tokyo Mew Mew came up as that was one of the first I watched of the genre and even after watching others and going back to it, it's still my favorite. Just a little input for something you might want to address, the status of some of these characters you've fit within your definition of magical girls is suspect, such as Cutie Honey and Matoi Ryuuko. The japanese wikipedia pages for these series doesn't contain magical girl under their genres like it would for Sailor Moon, and instead just calls them sento bishojo/beautiful girl fighters. Same applies to Symphogear. Ryuuko doesn't even transform, she's a superhuman with a transforming symbiote.
I'm so glad I found this video and I can't wait for you to cover the 80's magical girl shows like Creamy Mami and Minky Momo. Also, I'm interested as to what you consider to be part of the genre since it's so divided.

I watched a bit of Akazukin Chacha. The magical girl element is I guess exclusive to the anime; the manga is just about a cute clumsy witch having adventures.
Also thank you for not covering hentai. I mean, obviously RUclips's rules wouldn't allow it, but I could understand why it wouldn't be comfortable. Years ago I watched a "cleaned up" clip of "Venus 5" (a hentai series that is basically a parody of Sailor Moon with some Wedding Peach elements thrown in), and even THAT was pretty inappropriate.

Mostly separate! The only ones I'll combine are ones that clearly go together, like FWP and Max Heart, or the two Precure 5's.

Okay, something I have been wondering about for a looong while, do you draw everything yourself? Like the magical girl-you in this video?
Nope! I can draw a little, but not nearly well enough to look as professional as I want this stuff to be. So I commission very talented artists to do artwork when I need it! You can always check the end credits or the video description to see any artist information and links I've included.

Coincidentally a term paper I'm working on this semester is about magical girl anime (mostly focusing on the 90s Sailor Moon anime) and how they impact and are received in the West vs Japan. I would be impressed if you got to Sailor Moon while I was working on the paper so I don't think I'll be able to reference this series but I will be interested in seeing your discussio on the series after I've made it~

Ahhh I still vividly remember the day 6 y/o me, around like 1999, sat infront of the TV waiting patiently for my fave show to start - and then found out it had been replaced by Sailor Moon from that day. At first I was mad, but then tiny me watched the first episode and started drawing Fanart and collecting all things Sailor Moon and here I am, a 23 y/o full-blown weeb. Thanks to Sailor Moon 17 years ago.
