“Better Call Saul” has only one season left and the “Breaking Bad” prequel series stands on the precipice of the grim criminal underworld of that original series. Cast members Bob Odenkirk, Rhea Seehorn, Michael Mando and Tony Dalton, along with series creator and executive producer Peter Gould, joined the Variety Streaming Room for a conversation moderated by Variety senior editor Michael Schneider to examine some of the most intense moments from Season 5 and reflect on how the characters have evolved since the show began back in 2015.
Odenkirk began the conversation by talking about where McGill is now, and how much of him is left as opposed to the slimy Saul Goodman that fans know from “Breaking Bad.”
Nodding along to Odenkirk’s comments, Gould then voiced his agreement about the gradual transformation of the character.
When the series began, Kim Wexler was a moral compass of sorts to McGill, warning him against cutting corners while indulging in the occasional thrill of a grift with him. Now, she has met with the cartel face to face and doesn’t seem eager to back down. Seehorn explained her excitement as an actress about the trajectory of her character in the last season.
Meanwhile, Michael Mando’s Nacho wants nothing more than to exit the world of the cartel since his father’s life is being threatened. Mando commented on Nacho’s journey from an up-and-comer in the organization to being in over his head.
Gould also touched upon a moment in the finale in which Dalton’s Lalo Salamanca crawls through an underground tunnel to escape an assassination attempt.
“One of the great things about this whole cast is these guys are very physical actors and we’re very lucky that they are,” Gould said. “Every single one of them, they act from the tips of their toes to the tops of their head. Tony, I remember watching him crawl through that tunnel like a bat out of hell. It was really exciting and it was hard for the crew to keep up with, but it felt exactly right because the guy is crawling for his life. He’s furious and he’s scared. Just the adrenaline in that moment was just really exciting to watch… As writers, we try to give these guys situations where they can use their physicality, not just the acting in here. A couple of seasons ago, Rhea had a whole scene where she was chasing a runaway car that almost hit an oil derrick. Michael’s jumped over roofs. Bob has been in dumpsters. I don’t know. It’s a good question. Why are we doing this to these guys?” Развлечения
Michael mando's passion for his character is so heartwarming!
I hope he's OK now that the series is over lol
Lalo is now pretending to be an actor to evade the police. smart man.
He's gonna be in the Hawkeye series as a main character it seems. I don't care for superhero shows but damn I will be watching it just for him.
Ditched the mustache too. Next-level.
Super smart
Well played
Lalo is as scary as anyone.
Tony Dalton ironically seems like a really quiet, thoughtful guy in contrast to Lalo's 'bubbly' personality. Michael Mando seems like a smiley happy outgoing dude in contrast to Nacho who was often a stoic and reserved character. Just speaks to how good their acting skills are.
It seems like all Salamanca Actors are opposite their real-life personas; who knew Hector was Jewish?
It's so weird seeing Nacho smiling lol

Lalo is the type of guy you wanna rock the dance floor with and he would gladly join you
Everything is a game to Lalo. I love that scene when Nacho is rescuing the drug stash and he’s just laughing and eating snacks in his car. He brings such a relentless nature to the show, he’s a fantastic villain and played by a great actor.
He was waiting for him to fail
So he could laugh
For real. Lalo was so affable, so amiable and dangerous.
I love how happy micheal mando is
Breaking Bad was excellent, but Better Call Saul just surpasses every expectation. What I really love is how UNBELIEVABLY nuanced the characters are. I felt like Saul and Mike were way too one-dimensional in Breaking Bad, so I'm glad the cast and the writers get a chance to explore those characters in more depth. At the same time though, I enjoy their characters and character development in Better Call Saul way more than I enjoyed Walter White and all the other main characters in Breaking Bad. Can't wait for season 6!
I don’t think Mike’s development comes close to Walt’s or Jesse’s, sorry
I watched the complete BB show back in 2014 and all 5 seasons of BCS a few months ago. truth is I didn't think BB was great material up until season 3.. that time I thought dexter was even more entertaining.. but boy when I started watching BCS how long did I take to finish 5 seasons? 7days.. that good it is.. fun fact, no matter how good a show is, I will never put anything before prison break..

I thought that too when breaking bad ended - then we got another amazing series by Vince and Peter.
Kim Wexler is the best gf character in the history of tv. Rhea Seehorn deserves emmy for that season and so does show for Best Drama. I hope they will be able to make Season 6 before 2030 because of Corona- so the actors don't get so old that the Breaking Bad scenes become like Fat Todd. Better Call Saul is 10 stars on a scale of 1 to 4.
Changing actors to suit their roles is indispensable. Old actors will reduce the quality of the film
I hope when the show concludes and Gene is coming home from work he walks in and there is his wife Gertrude, with black hair and glasses who used to be a blonde. Rhea's comments about would Kim and Jimmy become the people they became if they had not meant each other got me thinking that most people become who they become when they have the power to do it. The CEO who pressures women to sleep with him only does so because he has the power. If he was just an assistant manager of a 7 11 then he would not have as much.

BCS has already surpassed BB in my mind as far as storytelling. SO MANY angles instead of one focal story, even though that focal point is Jimmy. I love the character focuses BCS brings to the table and so many twists. BB is awesome, but I think at this point BCS has taken the throne for me. And I dont hate the main character after 5 seasons haha
The characters here are more nuanced and twisted than Breaking Bad. They created a great Universe...
This. BCS has gotten better than BrBa pretty quickly, imo. Same quality of directing and writing and acting, but with compelling characters instead of characters you want to slap constantly.
@@SCharlesDennicon I want to slap Jimmy and Kim far more than Walt and Jesse. Walt took me until second viewing to see more of how bad he is, while Jimmy/Saul doesn't try to hide or rationalize that he is a terrible person.
its like you expect BCS as a setup to BB but in reality BB is now the setup to BCS.
@@ins3kta886 so fucking true. I was thinking about whether it would be better to watch BB or BCS first, but I really think you’re right
That was the best scene in the show, when Kim, Saul and Lalo are in the apartment and Kim confronts Lalo. Amazing. It showed the control and the intellect of Kim. What was an amazing confirmation is when Mike says to Saul that Kim just saved his ass. I loved that confirmation.
For me this was the season that really pushed better call Saul over breaking bad. I just love all the characters so much
I swear, I'm crushing on Rhea like crazy.
Kudos Rhea Seehorn for naming names! She gives credit where credit is due; where others refer to people by their occupation, Rhea personalizes every individual along with their contributions. (Without the people behind the camera there would be no point in being in front of it.)
Also - did anyone else feel a little guilty when they realized they liked BCS better than BB?...
Long live Nacho's dad! XO
Werner Ziegler...ZIEGGGGLER
Peter Gould at 10:38 perfectly encapsulated why shows like Game of Thrones failed to stick the landing. Surprise and subversion of expectation works if there is reasonable argument to be made as to why a decision was made. The breadcrumbs don't have to be a straight line, but at least they should lead to the answer.
This show has the best characters on tv. Nacho is such a lovely, nuanced role, and Michael Mando just nails it. They all do, hard to pick a favorite. Hell, I actually quite like Howard even. I feel kind of bad for what's gonna happen to him if Kim and Jimmy do indeed go scorched earth on him.
He dieded
Nacho is one of the most if not the most likable character. ever for me. He plays his part amazingly.
Michael Mando has the warmest smile.
The writers really did a great job writing the characters. Each one had such great depth to them. I especially loved Chuck's actor's performance.
He performed someone with OCD very faithfully
Michael McKean should have gotten an Emmy for Season 3, especially for the episode "Chicanery".

Tony felt forced at first, but has become one of my favorite characters in the BB universe.
His character introduction reminded me of Sauls intro to BB, because they both bring this jarring energy into the show and take the plot to unexpected places, but become integral to the show

The look on Bob's face when Rhea/Kim walks away at the courthouse, that was the best acting of the expression of true love I've ever seen.
I just recently watched the show on Netflix. While I wasn't that big a fan of BB, I imeadiatly loved BCS. Mostly cause I find the characters much more likable over all and I enjoy the humor as well as the cons that it brings.
That said, after I finished season 5 I started to look for a few interviews and that the cast is quite funny is icing on the cake. The story about adobting the dog just stole my heart.
@Cryer24597 i get that. I do. And I'm nit saying the characters are bad or the acting - both are brilliant, as you said. I just... Guess i prefer spending my time with likable characters 🤣
Also, i think what annoyed me most was that, yes Walter gives i tk these things but he's in complete denial about it. Which makes sense but much like Skyler i could not hear him saying how he did it for then anymore 🤣

@18:29 Michael Mando nailed it! "Nacho" and the dad scenes really broke my heart and Michael and Juan Carlos Cantú did such an awesome job playing the roles they feel so REAL so we feel that pain and love. I was hoping somehow Nacho and his dad would get away and finally have peace and a good life. Michael is a wonderful.
Nacho crosses my mind, like literally, about every other day. I worry about his future, his fate, and his father. I wrack my mind for possible scenarios where he might "get out" with his life intact. And, of course, I fantasize about myself in the middle of a Nacho, Jessie sandwich!
It doesn't make any sense to kill Nacho. He hasn't impacted Saul in any significant way yet. If he just dies then his whole story served no purpose.
I agree it would be a waste to kill him off, but I don't think I agree he hasn't impacted Saul.
Remember that Nacho was the first cartel member he represented after he talked Tuco out of beating the hell out of him, and is the guy that the cartel know Saul through.
He played a big part dragging Jimmy into the big crime world, and he keeps showing up to ensure Jimmy keeps getting dragged back in.
Nacho was the initial link between the cartel and jimmy so yes he has impacted him in as significant way
@@blackmadamada2259 Not really. He was originally written to be the guy who connected Jimmy with the cartel back in season 1 but the writers reconsidered because they didn't want the transformation into Saul to be too fast. All Nacho did was offer Jimmy a deal which he rejected. Years later, when Jimmy actually starts working for the cartel, it's Lalo's idea not Nacho's. (You can hear about all of this in the Better Call Saul Insider's Podcast where the writers discuss the story).
Seriously, by season 5, Nacho is nothing but a really intense client Jimmy once had. Nacho's whole storyline about sabotaging the Salamancas has been very influencial to Mike but not to Jimmy's.

With the Lalo/Jimmy/Kim scene, I thought the "tell me again" was a trying to see how much repitition there was in the retelling. The more repetition the more it comes off as only a story that was memorized beforehand and is being recited for effect. But yes, the pressure is another important factor.
Yep, Jimmy was intentionally telling a different version each time (probably based on Mike's advice.)
