Love this! I just dehydrated some the other day in my oven for the first time. I’ve got peppers coming out of the garden like crazy. Thanks for the tips to make the flakes!
I highly recommend a dehydrator - I also dehydrate green peppers, onions and celery. It really cuts down on the waste and if you vacu-seal your mason jars, they'll keep for years!
@@gardeningwithhoss I truly appreciate you using the plain ole' oven. I'm like you and i simply don't have the real estate in my tiny townhouse kitchen to dedicate to really anymore appliances than the necessities. Cant wait to try it.
I've done the low oven procedure and it works. I usually grow 5 plants that yield on avg 500-600 peppers. They plants I buy each year grow about 4'. I place them as they mature in the sunroom and let nature dry them. I usually end up with about 4 large jars of flakes that I share as gifts to friends in small small mustard style jars. Heating the peppers in the oven, intesnsifys the heat.
I like to dry them in my electric smoker. Use a little apple wood set it at 190 until dry usually around 6 hours. Adds another layer of flavor to them.
That's awesome! I started a few years back doing this with my peppers. I took it one step further. I grind them in a nutri bullet into a salt like powder and keep some in an extra salt shaker on the table to shake on everything! Easy peasy!
Daaaaaaang Travis!!! I have the same Ninja and I’ve never thought of doing it like that 🤣🤣🤣 I’ve done on my pestle and mortar the hard way. Gotta pick some more and try out the Ninja this weekend! Glad I watch this channel I learn some easy tips like using my Ninja 🤯 mind blown moment
funny story... a few years ago I processed a bunch of hot peppers and knowing the oils get on your skin i washed my hands really well. later that night my GF and I starting fooling around and the next thing you know "did you wash your hands after those peppers?". LOL needless to say, that was a quick end to the festivities for the evening. I now wear latex gloves when processing hot peppers. maybe a good topic for row by row? HAHA
I appreciate that good info Brian. I don’t know why someone would blush after reading that. That’s the kind of mistake I don’t want to learn first hand.
Dang, you'll have to wear rubber gloves to go pee now. Good idea though, Ihave way more peppers than we can use, so this is a good way to preserve them. Thanks.
Now this is something I'm gonna have to try next year now.
It's good stuff!
Fermenting them peppers into a hot sauce is the best, also drying jalapenos and grinding into powder is good
We've done the fermented hot sauce in the past. Really good stuff!
Thank you for sharing about using an air flow pan. Makes sense 😊
You're welcome Charmaine!

Sounds great!

Have thought hard about getting a dehydrator. Just run out of room sometimes for more kitchen gadgets.

Good to know!
Something I've done is add garlic cloves and/or onion petals to the pan to dry, giving a tasty seasoning mix.
Great idea!

Sounds yummy! Can't go wrong with a little applewood smoke!
For grinding I like a coffee grinder dedicated for grinding spices. Also, a mortar and pestle is good for some exercise.
Nothing like some old school grinding with the mortar and pestle!
Nice way to preserve the peppers. Sun drying can also work.
Yes, sun dried fruits are also great!
I do this process

Good idea grinding them into a powder!
Looks delicious. Great job brother
We’ve got the same ninja! Thanks for the tutorial. Can’t wait for the summer pepper harvest!
Welcome back! Nice. I have a few to dry and grind. Thanks
Good to be back in the swing of things!
Love this! Thank you
I make my own pepper flakes in my food dehydrator good video and job 👍👍🇺🇸😃
Sometimes we wish we had a dehydrator.
They're good in scrambled eggs.
Yes they are!
It was interesting to see you in the kitchen - maybe more kitchen videos in the future?
Maybe. We need to build a dedicated kitchen set for videos.
Sweet and easy, thank you

The Ninja is a very handy device!
Thanks Trav ... hell if we lived closer I'd give you one of my dehydrators... I get one for Christmas like 3 years in a row lol
Overstocked on dehydrators ... lol!

Thanks 👍

Haha. Been there, done that. And yes, it will quickly end any "festivities."
I would love to make the flakes without the seeds!!! I would just use my food dehydrater!
about to do this with my ghost peppers
Can you do that with jalapeño to
It doesn't work as well with thick-walled peppers like jalapeños.
Where did you get those baskets? I'm looking for something exactly like those.
We sell them at Hoss
hosstools.com/product/tubtrug-colander/
@@gardeningwithhoss Sorry, I meant the metal mesh baskets you dried the chilies in.
Think I could use banana and jalapeno peppers too?a
If the peppers have a thick wall, like a jalapeño, they don't dry very well. Bananas are thin so they might would work.
Hoss!
Aged red pepper flakes should be a thing. They get less hot and more flavorful in taste. Should be like fine wine.
My oven runs on Propane, so it would be insane for me to run it for 8 hours just to get less than a jar's worth of flakes.
Does it have to be cayenne peppers? Can you use any other kind of hot peppers?
You can use any type of hot pepper as long as it has a thin wall. Thick-walled peppers like jalapenos don't dehydrate very well.
@@gardeningwithhoss Okay so like Fish Peppers? I'm hoping to have alot of them come up soon. BTW, I adore your accent. ;)
👍
I need a Spicy Momma 😍
No need to buy expensive pepper flakes when it's so easy to make your own.
That's right!
You are so cute and video is very informative

Haha. A little dawn dish soap will get the capsaicin off the hands.
