- This video shows how to wire a three way lighting circuit, this means that you can have three separate switches for example one in the hall way, one on the landing and one at the top of the stairs. To wire a three way lighting circuit you will need 2 two way switches and an intermediate switch. This video also shows how an intermediate switch works.

Great video. Taken the time to understand you video on two-way (XOR), and also the other proposed diagram in comments (XNOR), on how the circuit completes by thinking logical gates.
Which makes this straightforward to understand. The intermediate switch simply reverses the 2-way circuit path any time you click the switch - alternating between a XOR and XNOR.

Great video - thanks. I have inherited this set up but the first socket on the circuit has a three gang socket (Socket A) (running a hallway light, a cupboard light and an outside light on a PIR). The second switch (Socket B) only covers the hallway. I have however noticed that the outslide light only works when Socket B is in a certain position. It shouldnt be affected by socket B at all so am i right in thinking that socket B is feeding off the wrong live? Does that make sense?

Good job but once I was stuck with lights in a hotel rooms because the painter had done something and it took me days to find the correct wiring. It was damn hard. First, you have those lights in the ceiling that probably were either wired like PIR or junktion box and then to the switch then there were three switches and one of them turn them all on including the bathroom lights as well and then that main switch was also connected to the contactor in the consumer unit and to make things worse there were no marking except the wire heads sticking out messed up by a painter and it was no joke job. The main switch was also connected to the lights card reader and it was no joke to fix it.
nice easy discription,,3way switching and switched fused spurs are my pet hate lol my apprentice got those jobs lol

What is the different between a 4 pole switch and a 4 way switch.

looking for advice. I have an out door light and a indoor light which are connected to a two gang switch each light works independently, but at the moment i have to switch both lights on for each to work.

Again, weird switching setup. and it uses 1 extra cable!
feed live to com of first switch have L1 and L2 go thru the cross-switch (in at L1 and out at L2) then go to L1 and L2 of last switch and connect lamp to com of last switch.
One less cable going from switch to switch and for security the live wire is only connected to one single point which makes it easy to de-energize the whole system.
ppdan your way is better, you can use 3+E and have a neutral and E at each switch. Ready for all the smart switches.

Thanks for this. I’d be very interested in a video or advice as to how to remove an intermediate switch from a circuit. I am converting a three switch system to a single switch. I’ve successfully took one of the normal switches out of the circuit but not certain about what to do with the intermediate switch.
If you have removed one switch already, the only switches left should be the first switch (the one where the original two circuit wires are) and the intermediate.
You should just be able to disconnect the wires on the three-core cable, at the first switch. That will leave just the live and switched live at the first switch, you can then remove the intermediate.

Hi there. Great video. I have a slightly different set up to a lot of videos and images of the intermediate wiring. I have a switch at top of stairs which is intermediate, a switch at end of landing and switch at bottom of stairs. the twin and earth from the light goes to the intermediate and not the other switches. All other videos I've seen shows the twin and earth going to the end switches and not the middle one. I was just wondering if you can help with this set up at all?
I'm not sure about that, sorry.
I always use three core and earth for two way or three way switching.
I'm sure there is another way of wiring such circuits, but it's not something I have ever done.

IF you have a light at the top and bottom of the stairs and a double switch on top and bottom wall- ive watched how you turn one light on and off from each end but how would you then switch the other light off from both ends within the same wall switches?
You just run a cable from the switched live, neutral and earth to the other light fitting, or as many light fittings as you like and then they can be switched on or off using either of the two switches.
Intermediate switches are sometimes configured differently i.e the same colours in both L1 terminals and the other two different colours in L2 - black and black in L1 and brown and brown in L2. Different manufacturers use different systems. Which can be annoying. It is important to read the enclosed wiring diagram that comes with the intermediate switch. If no instructions come with the intermediate switch a continutity tester (also sometimes called a bell tester) can be used to figure out the internal configuration of the intermediate switch. You must also ensure you keep to the same coloured wires in the L1 and L2 lugs in the two-way switches either side of the intermediate switch, otherwise the system will not work. Hope this is helpful.

You can add the original switch wire in at any of the 3 switches inc the intermediate but you'll never see a diagram or advice to show you.
How do you wire a 4 or more way lighting circuit? My grandmother in italy has 4 switches, something I was never taught at college. I did 2 way and intermediate. *Edit should have watched video first.
Not being an electrician, The intermediate switch simply reverses the path and either complete or break the circuit, thus switching light on/off. Hence, looking at the logic you'd implement your 2-way at the 2 ends, then add a 3rd/4th/nth intermediate switch in between. All replicating the middle switch config shown. Maybe someone else can confirm (or not).

Yes you can, but they will all be switched on or off at the same time.
Simply wire them in parallel where the lamp is in this circuit.

In American we call that a 4 way with a set of traveler wires going to all 3 switches

Jesus, I wired a new light fitting in my bedroom today, I was just putting wires in willy nilly, blew the breakers a few times, blew a few bulbs, fuckered my dimmer switch and at one point the light fitting remained lit regardless of the light switch position. I googled it in the end 🙂

I do not think the vertical red line at the left from Live to L1 is necessary or useful but i may be wrong....
oh no, maybe its the red line down from L2 to the red t junction that shouldnt be there!
The wire from L2 has to go to the intermediate switch and also the lamp to make the circuit work correctly ;-)
The standard wiring colours in the UK are (as of 2006) the same as elsewhere in Europe and follow international standard IEC 60446. So, Brown, Black and Grey are the colours of live. Any electrician should know this. Why would I want to sleeve all the wires with brown tape if they already have the live colour code?
I also find the UK way of wiring lights dangerous. Like all EU countries, live should go to the switch first and then continue to the light fixture. That way you always use brown for live and blue for neutral. And don't get me started with the ring main. lmao.
They sleeve the blue conductor with brown sleeving or brown tape to signify that it is live at some point. You can get twin brown and earth wire for the switch wires, but not all electricians use it when wiring up the lighting circuit. Three core and earth always needs sleeving though for two or three way switching.
why not just run the hard active to one common and the load out of the common on the switched active?
This shows how to wire a 3 way light, when it has been converted from a single way light.

Simple a concept but so difficult fro many to understand. Wiring diagrams make it most difficult for most, they really do not flow in an easy to understand fashion. Yes for the trained electrician they do. For the DIY there could be a better 1,2,3 diagram. The circuit could be presented better. More complicated ones; then you better have a clue. This type of does not work well with physical units. This one needs drawing to and from in series. NOT as an electrician would view the schematic.... Needs to be very very simple and white board.
I'm very sorry about your friend John. Life is constant, things, life does not end here on Earth. It's just a matter of time near or great where you get to find a new adventure. Life is a recycling program better then we do on Earth. John as my sister Linda both get to see what happens next in Infinity. It`s easier to figure, for the untrained eye, if you imagine doing it in singles cable. Permanent live into common, L1 connects to the other L1, do the same with L2 , and the remaining common terminal is the live out to the light. This gives you the two way switching. Effectively then, to introduce an intermediate switch , you are simply `breaking` the L1 &L2 wires, thus making 4 ends, which connect across the intermediate switch. Doing it the way Chez has demonstrated, is how things are done since 3 core (and earth) cable became commonplace.
