    I love it when tutorials include the sketching process, so thanks Kristy for putting that in and not speeding through it. I feel proud when I do the sketch myself, but i appreciate it when the outline can be downloaded so there's plan B. ;)
    As to the colors, your pinks make me drool. I don't have it in my palette 'cos want to learn how to mix it.

    I think I might be weird. I LOVE MISTAKES! So spontaneous, unexpected and lovely. Not all of course. But most! They make me smile. I let go of all control and let things happen when doing any type of art.

    So happy to find your RUclips videos. The 1st one That I watched, you showed the dagger brush. I actually bought one years ago and took it to an acrylic class and the teacher took it out of my hand. I was so sad. Then when I saw you using it I wish I could have jumped over the screen and given you a hug. I downloaded the sketch and hubby transferred it to water color paper for me. Here is my result.

    I really like that you don't "preach" what colors to use. A suggestion of a shade or color is great. I love the challenge of mixing my own colors and shades. I find it interesting if a particular color is needed in various places and I don't match it exactly. I enjoy wet on wet and letting some colors bleed into each other. I do pen and ink and do minute detail. But when I wanted to learn watercolor I wanted to swish a brush across a paper and voila....art! The "sloppy" compliments my need for detail. As I age, this loose painting helps me continue my creativity without squinting. It took quite a while for me to realize that I had to let the detail go! Thanks for your quirkiness...I can relate!

    This is one of the prettiest painting of Magnolias I have seen so far.I love the way you mixed the colours they really complement each other nicely ,and having the green going into the flower is very natural as well as the green into the woodier part of the shrub.I will at some stage when I am feeling a bit better have a go at doing this I think.Probably won’t look like yours lol! But it’s a good excessive .Not done flowers for years ..Thank you for the clear instrctions..Love n Light 🥰

    I always have a backup painting. With oil you stand back. With watercolor you have to walk away. Sometimes I take the painting out if my art room, prop it against the wall and just sneak a look now and then to see if I've changed my mind. It seems like the values play hide and seek when you're not looking. Great video! ❤🎨

    Hi, Love your channel! Regarding "jelly gouaches" like himi gouache and your comment that they are acrylic not gouache: Actually, they are definitely NOT acrylic... Ive been using them as well as my traditional gouache. They are definitely just a cheaper gouache, and instead of in a tube, they come in little "McDonalds dipping sauce"-like containers... They reactivate with water, unlike acrylic. I made a travel palette and filled my half-pans with the himi gouache. I also filled half-pans with my two colors of M. Graham & Co. tube-gouache. I let it all completely dry out and then reactivate them a little while before i use them with a spray or squirt bottle. I really love using both of them. But my M. Graham & Co. gouache tubes are of course better quality.

    • @KristyRice
      @KristyRice  2 года назад +1

      I don’t recal exactly what I said but I believe I remarked that himi gouache feels too much like acrylic for me. I’ve used them and rewet them successfully as you describe. But yes their texture, to me, feels like a very odd watered down acrylic :(

    Hello Kristy. Im very new to your youtube subscribers. I have so much I’l love to say but would take up too much space. I’ll see if I can condense it some. Two things about me, maybe 3. Im left handed, Im Canadian, Im afraid of watercoloring. Years ago I tried it . Took some classes with an artist in town. But his were so loose I couldn’t understand what to do. I could see his sketch but he didn’t follow the lines. Oh btw, your connection for your magnolia sketch doesn’t connect to it. And now I find your channel. And how you explain and do things makes sense to me. Its how you feel. You don’t have to do exactally at the teacher. And as you would say ‘don’t do as the teacher’ right? I am so impressed with you. The way you teach. It’s like someone just gave me an antidepressant and it finally worked. Lol. It all makes sense . It all finally fits . I can’t thank you enough. Oh yeah, I don’t know how to draw at all. And your direction on that is even great for me. I’m so impressed.

    I have always disliked having to spend time drawing out things. I love to paint them once they are drawn out, I just want to get in and paint. I also am one who cannot see a sketch or design in my head without help. A former art teacher helped me so much ~ she said most people use photographs or stencils or outlines to help them. I thought I was the only artist who could not, so I felt more confident knowing this. You are so encouraging in your teaching style, thank you. I like realistic paintings but can never do it, I also want to explore vibrant colors and am drawn to paintings that have multiple colors not usually seen in that item, which is also your style. For realism I take photographs and enjoy that medium.

    Hmmmmm - color confusion: for me, in this case, LAVENDAR is confusing. I have a few purples/violets. What you called lavender looked purple to me (and yes, we have a monitor in the mix) In my colors, the only one I would call Lavendar is a color Daniel Smith calls Whysteria and it isn't one I'd choose there. It's rather pastel and opaque (thank you Daniel Smith) and then there is one CALLED Lavendar that looks blue to me, periwinkle at most. It's also a bit on the pastel side (and again, THANK YOU DANIEL SMITH!) My color perception is quite good, but color names for paint (particularly watercolor) play a bit fast and loose. I can see why some watercolorists become pigment nerds and stick to numbers.
    So Kristy, here in Waterworld, can you explain purple vs lavender? I get pink vs red (no pastels involved) but the purples frustrate me.

    • @KristyRice
      @KristyRice  2 года назад +1

      The pigment I used is from Holbein and is a creamy and opaque lavender very similar to the Daniel Smith Wysteria. Hopefully this helps clear the confusion. :)

    I absolutly adore your style and attitude!! Been watching you for a while, and this is my first comment. I am one of those "botanical" painters and have longed to have a loose flowing painting technique. Your painting is a very comfortable combo of the both. Your slightly cheeky chatter as you continue to show and teach. You are a comfortable and inspiring painter of my favorite subject, florals. This magnolia is my dream painting, I will attempt to paint one from your download to practice the actions of paints, but then, watchout, I am going in with my pencil and draw and sketch my heart out. Kristy I know you paint botanicals mostly and I do enjoy creating this kind of art myself, but I would love to see you paint some more landscapes. You make it look so simple, I just can't cope with what most teachers are showing, it's too complex for a begginer like me, and there's no joy in it, it's too intimidating. Your impressionistic approach is so refreshing, I was searching so long for something similar and didn't find anything. When I look at how you paint I realize that it's very much about brush strokes, precission and being calm while painting. I can't fully describe it, but there's just 100% clarity in how you paint and it's fantastic.
    Also... I'm very interested what would your take on watercolor pencils look like :-)

    This is magnificent! Annnnd, as I’m a beginner, I’m referring back again and again to your “Art trauma” video. Now I know I’m supposed to develop my own style, and I know that that comes from practice, but I expect perfection from myself right from the start. A real killer of creative exploration wouldn’t you say? Your style is unbelievably gorgeous! Your placement of color amazes me. So, in hopes that I can regain some confidence, I’m returning to your live videos from last week and practicing brushstrokes again. It’s relieved frustration a few times thus far, and I know it’ll help with the same frustration I’m experiencing today. Kristy, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for your loving self, your undying excitement and your generosity. You’re a bright beacon of hope for me while I’m trying diligently to learn this watercolor medium. God bless you 🎨❤️

    It is SO refreshing to come to your videos, Kristy - your joy is inspiring and your enthusiasm contagious.The timing is awesome, as a friend who loves white flowers has taken ill, and I want to do this exercise in soft blue-grey (not as succulent as yours, but that's her taste). I'm a bit confused, though as the link to the "Wet on Dry" video keeps taking me to a "Creative Wounds" episode....
