All of us Malaysians are proud that our money was invested to develop the historic building of Bettersea Power Station. Thanks to the great former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato' Seri Najib Tun Abdul Razak for this great idea and vision.
Ah yes, colonialisation in reverse; not doubt you're so pleased with yourselves (although thanks to this idea/ vision the original power station was, in part, saved).
As you know there was a fun park at Battersey back in the day. When I was around 8 my father took me there when we went London. When we arrived there we found it had been closed down a number of years before. Its great to see the old power station thriving again. I will never forget it. Would love to visit it one day when am back in England.
Fantastic ..wow what developer's can accomplish these days..thank you for taking me on your journey really enjoyed this
Glad you enjoyed it
Went shopping here in January this year. It is impressive and quite colossal. Still a nice shopping environment and the surrounding developments are well designed. We arrived by boat which is a great way to approach it. Great eating, if pricy, too.
Only reason i’d visit London… they Gantry Cranes and the Original window’s are something else tho. And the way they’ve made Art Deco tie in with almost modern Art Deco is Stunning!
That was an absolute treat! Thanks Darren 😊
It’s so good that they’ve kept so much of its history and paying homage to that in its new life 👍🏻
We filmed the music video for East 17's "Let it rain" at the power station, when it was derelict. I was one of the dancers.
Amazing building.
The Hoover building is another place I love, retains many of the original Art Deco features. One of my mates has an apartment there!
Fantastic video - well done you.
My parents were born in Chelsea and lived just down the road from the power station. They told me that 'waste' steam from the boilers was piped across the Thames to heat the flats on a private estate called Dolphin Square.
Most probably. They didn't waste much.
Amazing,
Fascinating explore. Darren, you are the master of before/after dissolves! 👏
That huge building was built without a traditional foundation? Darren, I have seen videos on this before but you filled in many gaps and put in so many back stories AND your photo fades are great as always. I wonder if the 'gantry cranes" were left in place to save the cost of removing them, just thinking. The photo fade at 11:49 was amazing..... Thanks to Darren for this fine watch.
I think that they were listed like the wharf cranes certainly were. They still had to be taken down and apart and refurb'd before being put back though. That mammoth task was nothing as compared to other stuff needing protecting in situ or faithfully recreating.
Don't want to be in danger of stealing our host's thunder though and can't wait for the next visual feast so now I'm just going to fade a ω α y
what a fantastic vid and the view from the top of the chimney where you can see the vast network of railway lines is breath taking
Great video. We visited here around 4 weeks ago and I have to say it’s excellent what they have done. A landmark that will now stand forever.
Totally agree!
That is so cool how they retained some of the original equipment and flair of the building (gantry cranes, control rooms, etc.), and modernized everything, instead of just knocking it to the ground. I can't even imagine how many bricks it took to originally build that behemoth!!😲👍👍
Great video Darren👍when you went up in the lift it was like watching Willie Wonker lol. It was nice to see one of the chimneys actually working and letting the smoke out . Can’t wait to see the next one 👏👏👏
Loved the flashbacks to yesteryear. Fabulous. Thank you.
Another fab video Darren and your video fades are the best! Loved seeing Battersea power station - I once worked as a secretary at a Unilever power station (Wirral). It was gas and coal and had two big Mirrlees Blackstone engines. It opened in the 1950s but eventually sadly closed then got knocked down in late 1990s. Love your videos and they make my Sunday night, can't wait to see Battersea Park. Hope you've had a lovely Easter 🐰🐣💛
Glad you enjoyed it
When doing London trips we used to park our coaches at Nine Elms by the fruit and veg market, last time I was there the power station was just a roofless shell you could see straight through! I`m glad it has been sympathetically developed with an eye towards its` history, a great London landmark.
Looks amazing, must have a go at that lift.
Love this building the Architecture and because of Pink Floyd so glad it was finally rescued, was there a few years ago before it was complete gutted it wasn't at the time was desperate to see what they were doing with it inside, what a great video really well done with the fading in an out of before and after, great job👍
All your videos are fantastic mate.👍
Thanks 👍
It's wonderful that certain parts have been kept as they were (the control rooms and the overhead cranes). I can't look at it and not imagine a Cybus airship hovering above it or seeing the Cyber Controller fall to his death (as seen in Doctor Who: Age of Steel/Rise of the Cybermen).
Darren another video of great detail and content.keep this going darren.possibly see you doing one around Leeds when I'm that way.oh and by the way York is still waiting for you presence.
The mall & lux apartment for phase 1. They're going for phase 2 development. 🇲🇾🇬🇧
I visited there recently and was blown away by this magnificent structure and was confused how I never knew about it considering it was right next to the River Thames!.... wouldn't this have be a hazard to the environment, air and people of London?
BIG MAN PIG MAN HEY!
Fun fact, all 4 chimneys are actually replicas as the originals were all demolished and rebuilt (as that was probably easier than restoring and cleaning them).
That's a place I've always wanted to look around. Nice one Darren. 🫡
Night time to shoot to get Evp recorder to get ghost
The world's biggest four-poster... lol
Good point
proud to be malaysian ❤️❤️
Amazing what the developers have done to this place. I remember when it was just a derelict skeleton of a structure all run down and an eyesore to the London skyline. Now it’s an incredible place with shops, bars and restaurants as shown here in your video. That lift 109 is just amazing. Nice video Darren.
Great video mate. I was lucky to perform at Battersea in 2012 as part the "Freeze Festival" a music and snowboard show built around the abandoned power station... Having a walk around on my own without an issue was most fun ;-)
Backstage is best
Shame you weren't vlogging back then lol. So many places I have been in when younger, would have been great footage now.
Great video, and particularly appreciated as someone who grew up in Battersea! I don't live there any more, but always see it as a symbol of "home". I left school in the year that it closed, and watched with interest the different plans for its future that came and went over the years.
I paid it a visit just after Christmas, and whilst I'm glad that it has a new lease of life, the shopping centre wasn't for me, especially on my salary! I did enjoy going up the chimney in the lift though, it was good to get a new high-rise perspective of the area.
My biggest bugbear is that because of all the new blocks of flats that have been built around it, you can only actually see it from certain angles. It used to be visible from pretty much everywhere, we used to get a great view of it from Battersea Park, but sadly, not any more.
Happy Easter Darren. One fact that you mentioned it had no proper foundations. That's bloody amazing for a structure of that size and something I never knew. I used to spend some recreation time in the Wandsworth, Battersea area when the regeneration to today's standard was starting. Now it's progressed to being a valued area and it's listed status ensures it's future and it won't be lost into obscurity. A fellow London YTer (I'm sure you'll know of him) has recently covered this area too. Both of you have done justice to BPS. Did you spot any nests, with residents, up the lift shaft 😮 Cheers DougT
Just needs a helium-filled pig in the air.
Excellent video Darren again, it all looks a bit too swanky for us northerners haha 😂
Those faded photos were fantastic, i lone the fact they’ve kept some of it original.
Going up that chimney made me think of Charlie and the great glass elevator. I suppose with it having no foundations there’s no underground bits to look at ?
I drive past here quite a lot when I’m “daaaan saaaaawf”. It really is a huge building that a camera doesn’t do it justice. All the best mate and don’t eat too much chocolate today haha 👍🏼
There _is_ actually stuff under the ground and under the Thames in fact.
The most atmospheric infrastructure is the pipe conduit which took waste hot water over (under!) to the infamous Dolphin Square mansion blocks. You can just about stand up in it but it's dotted with unnerving dripping water.
What a fabulous piece of architecture combining the original and the new purpose.
2:27 Great Scotland Yard. It's SUPERMAN III. My All Time Favourite Warner Bros Pictures Children's Live Action Superhero Science Fiction Coming Of Age Fantasy Action Adventure Family Comedy Blockbuster Movie. Thanks Mate. X
The electrical failure wouldn’t have caused a blackout across London because it only provided electricity for a fifth of the capital; primarily the capital.
A great video, thanks - I had no idea what they'd done inside there, from the outside when passing by on the train to Victoria it just looks like tacky, glitzy looking apartments slapped on the side.
Good and interesting video just shows you what can be done with old buildings
Breathtaking views, especially from the top of the chimney! It's good to see it in use again, but I found the interior rather alienating, with its up-market ambience - though the 'community bookshop' is excellent. Outside, the surrounding huge blocks of flats make for a rather claustrophobic atmosphere. Having said that, I will be returning to explore what I missed the first time. Thank's for the tour. Great video!
It is an incredible restoration but the shopping centre is a bit naff. It's a pity they didn't use the space for something more interesting than posh boutiques and an M&S.
Fun videogame history fact: The power plants in the original Command and Conquer Red Alert are based on Battersea Power Station, likely thanks to Pink Floyd.
It featured in a couple of scenes in the 1969 film The Battle of Britain.
A marvellous video production by you, here, Darren. I remember seeing this place in dereliction back in the 80s when going in an out of Victoria station, but I never ever thought that it would be turned into a fantastic mega shopping complex like this. It's great to see that some of the old machinery has been so well restored along with the gantries. The ride up to the top of that chimney looked so impressive. Totally impressed, and so thank you for this presentation.
Heard my great-granddad was supposed to help link this power-station to a district heating station, when given a chance to leave Germany in 1936, on a work visa/ know-how swap offered by his boss.
Just found out that Malaysia bought the property as an investment
how odd i was just thinking about this yesterday .qne of londons sights ive never seen
Great that the buildings were saved and repurposed. Better a shopping mall and apartments people can use than a ruin. Nice that they saved a few artifacts like the disconnects and cranes. Loved the photo fades as usual! On the chimney lift ride, if you pay another 50p will they launch you up even further? 8^) Cheers!
Great video but a minor correction. Historic England do not actually List buildings but they are the main advisor to DCMS. Also Historic England was only setup in 2015. Prior to that the adviser (in England) was English Heritage which was setup in 1984. As you said Battersea Power Station was Listed in 1980 by the Department for the Environment, which was the Department responsible for Listing buildings at the time.
Great video, love the then and now fades, good work.
As an Aussie I've heard a fair amount about Battersea PowerStation over the past 20-30years but had no clue it was a thriving shopping centre and a popular place for people to go to. P.s I bet it's nice living in one of the rooftop flats
Great if you can afford one lol
Got a spare 9 million you can have a apartment on the top floor a 1 bed studio flat up there is 750 grand rumours around that Sting owns a apartment as well as Gordon Ramsey
Nice to see the old power station put to use like some of Swindon works building survivor as a shopping centre good video Darren
Local resident for 24 years & we were promised a new “village” for Wandsworth. To date there is no chemist, vet, greengrocer or butcher’s. No local sports centre has been planned ALL PRIVATE swimming pools & gyms. There will be a private members sports venue starting at £220 per month! The public realm landscaping is a shambles if you compare it to something like Pancras Square in Kings Cross. Add to that the complete lack of tree planting, most in pots, including NineElms is shocking.
I’ve never even been to London so had never heard of Battersea Power Station but I enjoyed learning about this! Loved the observation lift, that’s a very nice touch.
Enjoyable video, thank you.
Funnily enough, a few weeks ago, I was trying to find videos on RUclips about Battersea Power Station whilst it was still in use as a power station, but I couldn't find much at all. Great video, Darren. Thank you 😊
The made it....elegant again...😊
Oh also - Have you ever explored the lost/hidden train station underneath an area in Harrogate? (In between Leeds & York) It used to be called Brunswick Station and with a bit of research you can still get down into it. It closed in the 1800s but was used as an Air Raid shelter during the war and there’s evidence of this down there still to this day.
i love pink floyd
Another great video Darren. I've always had a fascination with this building being quite a regular passer by on the train into Victoria over the years. I've visited the new development a few times since being open. They've certainly made a good job of restoring and transforming the building itself. Its never looked so good. Sadly the classic view from the train has been obscured by those new buildings and apartments on the west side which I don't think are very attractive. The shops are mainly high end certainly out of my price range! I think the only thing I've bought there apart from a little power station ornament in the souvenir shop is a sandwich in the M&S foodstore! No Poundland or Primark here!! The outside of the power station looks stunning especially when lit at night. I've done the lift twice once during the day and once at night. Its certainly quite a moment when you burst out the top of the chimney. Shame you don't get a bit longer up there to admire the view. I wasn't sure about the audio visual display you get when waiting in the room by the lifts. I think it would be better to have some kind of visual history rather than flames and gushing water etc. All in all though its an enjoyable experience. Look forward to your films about Battersea Park.
Prima Darren. Ein tolles interessantes Video. Du machst das toll alt und neu Zustand übereinander legen.
Und wenn ich es richtig verstanden habe sogar auch mit Kino.
Danke Darren
Bin gern wieder dabei ☺️😊
Brilliant upload as per ever
Amazing so glad they kept a nod to history thank you for sharing
Pink Floyd - Animals
Happy Easter Darren, it’s fantastic what’s been developed from the old power station. Thanks for showing Darren. Very interesting building👍🏻😀
Brilliant video as always, I don't get it though you're not keen on heights but you love rollercoasters 😂. I'm glad they've done it up and it is huge and I liked the photo fade inside one of the towers. 😊
A rollercoaster is only momentary. And I'm strapped in lol
Great video, this is an amazing building, and so vast, love the lift ride to the top of the chimney,it's been transformed to such a high standard 👍👌😀
Rating: 50/50🌟🌟🌟🌟⭐
Down south they re-purpose iconic buildings. Whereas up north, because nothing up here has nostalgic value to the decision makers down south, they just bulldoze down our old iconic buildings and throw up something shite in their place.
Bet it's haunted
Sure they’ve done a beautiful job to restore the Power Station. BUT the mall is utterly pointless and you’d never visit more than once as it’s grossly inferior to Westfield/West end for food and shops.
It’s unfortunately become a playground for the super rich to launder money into property assets like £700k shoebox studios with ordinary Londoners priced out. Affordable housing should have been front and centre of this entire scheme, but the government and the developers got away with screwing over local people. Oh but at least you can pay £30 to visit a chimney!
I live locally and loved this video. Great local history. I'm just sad that they've turned it into a soulless shopping centre filled with designer boutiques selling socks and ties for £150 a piece! I've been once but won't go again as, like most people, I do the vast majority of my shopping online.
Thanks for watching. I have a few Battersea videos coming.
What a great job they have done on such an iconic London landmark..I believe it used to supply heating to the fifty's sixties built Churchill's houses estate directly opposite the power station on the north bank...love your videos thank you ❤❤❤
Why was the Power Station closed ?
Now Europe economy is absolutely non existent, only service section with goods from Asia . Nothing is being produced in the UK and Europe. Total disgrace
Excellent.
I visited Battersea Power Station in December last year. So impressed with what it now looks like and also did the lift/ view from the chimney. It was a rather murky day and lots of snow around still but was still really great to see the view from the top.
The lift reminds me of the end of the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. 🎶 Come with me, and you’ll be…🎶
The control room also used on the album cover Quark, Strangeness and Charm. Hawkwind..
Great video, it's on my to do list...
Nice video we went for a walk around recently had a drink, then went in the Lift 109 attraction which was well worth a visit and pretty cool all in all I can say it was a good few hours spent, it did feel historical. The only problem is at the moment the shops are aimed at the local clientele from areas such as Fulham and Chelsea
As per usual, sold to foreign investors and completely ruined, I will never go there. It should’ve been converted into a museum for everybody to enjoy and not overpriced shops which were only available for the rich and famous who now live there. Absolutely disgraceful.
Nice looking building with brutalist design. Too bad it was nothing more than a hellish pollution machine.
Brilliant!!
Best video I've seen in a long time. Keep it up. Rebirth of the power station follows just after your robin hatchling critter cam. Coincidence?
Awesome video, Darren. Thanks for sharing this - new dream is to have an apartment in the complex!
Very interesting , it’s sad in a way it’s another shopping mall full of the cookie cutter bland shops but at least it was saved . The chimneys as you know we’re demolished and rebuilt . Quarter mass was filmed here to in the 50s with all the machinery working
11:44 old time photo shopped image, you can see the cut outs around the faces. Anyway, thanks for video, liked the glass ceiling with natural light from original design, better than the other B corridor.
Was last here in 2010 when Red Bull did an X-Fighters extreme moto-cross event, it was still undeveloped at the time, remember thinking then what an impressive backdrop it provided! Glad they've done something with the place...
Amazing, worth travelling South to see it, that's two things on my bucket list, tower of london, and Battersea power station,(the who album quadrophenia had this in the background, there were flats at ground level, which featured Chad the mod,he is sat on the scooter,)
wow so good to see they have kept a lot of the character of the original building looks amazing. love the partial fading then and now sections.
Another well researched and presented quality video
Enjoyed that a lot
I don't much like heights either, Darren - you are a brave man indeed to stand within that glass lift and at the top of the escalators earlier. Did the filming help distract you from that awful feeling of being sucked off your perch, somehow? I'd go out and get some chocolate eggs to reward myself now, if I were you...!
As always, a great video with some amazing fade work, brilliant. I didn’t realise how beautiful the place was. That’s Darren
Battersea powerstation
Why is there not toilets I control B Control room it's embarrassing wetting yourself when your trying to find a iollet when you desperate to go to pass water and extremely painful .then putting up with being wet through why is it they don't have toilets ..
Loved it, thank you. Great history and views. Splendid work from you yet again. Happy Easter too!!!
An amazing video and shows how an old non nuclear power station can be faithfully redeveloped to preserve its heritage.
How many times can you use the word original in one post?
I lost count after just a few minutes!😂
Hello happy Easter Darren fantastic vidio thank you very interested best wishes take care stay safe xx
