The 2021 Lexus UX is soon to become this Japanese luxury carmaker’s cheapest car in Australia as the Lexus CT hatch will be removed from sale at the end of 2021. But is the UX small crossover a true luxury vehicle? Is it worth over $50,000, as the UX 200 Crafted Edition tested is priced at? Which Lexus UX model is best? Is the UX hybrid a valuable investment? Let’s find out.
The UX Crafted Edition reviewed here also includes a subscription to Lexus Encore Platinum, which lets you swap your UX for a high-end Lexus model several times within a three year period, along with bonus fuel discounts and valet parking vouchers.
Like the new Lexus NX SUV and ES sedan, the UX SUV uses the new TNGA platform. The 2021 UX is available with petrol or hybrid engines.
Rivals to the Lexus UX include the Mercedes GLA, BMW X2, Audi Q2 and the Jaguar E-Pace.

A key feature of the UX Crafted that I forgot to mention: Lexus include membership of the Encore Platinum service, which lets you swap your UX for high-end Lexus vehicles (the LC, LS and LX are all included) several times within a three year period. There are other benefits, including valet parking and fuel discounts, too. But being able to sub into an LC convertible for a weekend is probably the best one… More info: www.chasingcars.com.au/news/car-industry/lexus-encore-platinum-club-launches-in-australia-with-car-on-demand-benefit/
That's a pretty great offer, rather than buying the big SUV, you can borrow it for the trip to the mountains.
Another great review. I had a UX for a day when my LS was in for a service. I've driven both RX and NX, but found the UX as a package was more compelling than the other two SUVs. From a ride and handling perspective, Lexus nailed it. I drove the FWD non hybrid and found performance adequate, but in saying that I'd probably pay the extra to get the hybrid drive train.
I own a ux200 f sport, 2.0L naturally aspirated.
I got it in November 2021 and am considering trading it in now in Feb 2022.
It's a beautiful car. I have the olive green metallic colour with black leather interior and am OBSESSED with that green colour.
It has all the bells and whistles, all features and is a solid, luxury car. As a "crossover" suv it just doesn't cut it. It's small. Very small. Let's be real, it's a hatchback.
It handles beautifully but definitely much better in sports plus mode which gives you stiffened suspension and steering which is fun but power is a little underwhelming and not as responsive in eco mode. The CVT is smooth and faultless and in sports plus it really allows you to up those revs before transitioning.
Safety features are second to none.
Worst thing they did was add "storage space" under the boot due to run flats, and sacrifice boot space that you'd expect in an SUV.
Road noise is an issue.
The sound system is less than impressive for what you would expect from the top of the line package. The track pad works fine and is easy once you get used to it.
My advice, if you want a luxury SUV, go the NX. If you want a small luxury hatch, go the UX. Don't get me wrong, it is a beautiful and quality car and this is my personal opinion. But I should've gone bigger if I wanted an SUV.
This is a great little car and I do love it. And if you are fine with a small car, I would definitely recommend.
Another SUV. YAY!
I'll suffer it and watch thru to help the channel algorithm...
👍🏻👍🏻 Chasing Cars sticker arrived today, cheers!
Amazing car just purchased a 2022 ux luxury. What an amazing luxurious vehicle.
Can't wait for pricing on the new NX!!!
Ty for a fantastic review
Got my bumper sticker! Thanks CC!
99% of the interior section is just filming the host talking. I just wanna see the interior lol
Hey mate, I've made a few reviews of the UX, you're welcome to watch it and let me know what you think :)
Nice report Tom. When I went to ‘change’ from a Saab 9-5 Aero Estate I did consider the UX though I felt the bang for buck just wasn’t there when you compared like for like with the RAV4 and CX-5. For luxury the CX-5, dollar for dollar, matches it easily and the RAV4 has the space. As empty nesters we went with a Mazda CX-5 GT 2.5T as it feels so much like the Saab it was replacing both around town and when you put your foot down. White leather, hence the GT (dumb modelling from Mazda) with an interior LED upgrade and it feels like any (nearly) Eurolux for less than $45,000 drive away (at the time). But a big reason I discounted it was its CVT transmission. Lloyd
I just can't get around the Lexus/Toyota styling/interior elements. Always looks a bit chunky and cheap in my eyes. Great review though as always Tom.
First Lexus in a very long time that I can look at let alone consider. I think the design direction under the younger Mr. Toyoda is finally sorting itself out. Long overdue!
It's certainly different!
Its ugly, but strangely…i like it.
Excellent review as always. A definite NO on the NX. For the money I'd consider the top-spec CX5 and ditch the awful droning noises of the CVT transmission and the questionable looks of the black-blue vinyl interior. Greetings from Virginia USA
I think it's great, just think it'll be a better decision to hold off until the new NX with the new infotainment, etc. The new NX also looks great. Great film as always, Tom.
The new NX also different price bracket?
@@kelvpoon That's pretty obvious, but it's not a huge difference on a lease in some countries.
Absolutely Love it! Except that massive plastic around the wheels...
Thanks Tim. Im worried about the cvt gearbox & what appears to be slow reaction.
It’s Tom
Would’ve been good to see the features on the gauge cluster
Hey mate, I've made a few reviews of the UX, you're welcome to watch it and let me know what you think :)
Can you do a review on Baic BJ40L?
So in general, this car is an sub or hatchback?
Very good review again.
Lexus used to have such a nice design and very appealing to the eye, the latest models are a bit... Toyota IMO.
Makes sense since Toyota owns Lexus.
The UX is a pretty tidy unit, I do like the blue and black interior. Is it for me ? No, for my money the CX5 Akera Diesel is a better proposition.
Go the Turbo Petrol rather than the diesel. You can thank me later. (about 100000km later when the diesel goes poopy in it's panties!)
They’re both a meh from me. The new NX is more competitive than this especially with the horrendous trackpad system. Same with the CX-5 which should be put out to pasture and built on the all new platform like the CX-30 is.
Probably the one that will go on and on but the price of petrol is getting outrageous.
The engine, platform and CVT is the same as a Corrolla. Paying $20K more for the brand and a lot of sound proofing foam is not for me but I am sure there are other who r willing to pay for the brand.
No double wishbone on corolla tho.
Its different once you drive them
Both. Lexus just feels special.
@@lexurious2227 lol that’s because they don’t make Toyotas feel too “premium” to avoid stepping on Lexus’ toes. Drive a Mazda CX-30 Astina back to back with this, with a more powerful engine and every option box of this car ticked, plus a BMW iDrive style infotainment system not this crappy trackpad. And oh what if I told you the whole thing, even with AWD optioned costs less than a base barebones UX200? And it has the highest ANCAP safety score (99%) of any car in the country. Of course a Toyota will feel cheap next to this because they can’t trip over theirselves. Mazda suffers no such issue.
At $50k AUD or thereabouts, is the Lexus UX good buying?
No, overpriced ! As you said, top spec CX5 is less and better value !
Bit pricy but I drive new 21 corolla hybrid although nice in SX trim its nothing like level of luxury as Lexus. I can see how brands create brand differential even within same parent company Toyota!
I will definitely choose CX-5 instead of this smaller one.
@@acde9355 hybrid!
I’d go the Ford Escape Vignale for this money although resale on this would be better - nice spec in the blue however this is a a car with options that is really overpriced out of its class - a Q3 much posher in my opinion but a NA engine on corolla platform a Kia Seltos with the turbo engine would be more fun to drive imo
Is it much worse than the hybrid version?
I have one of these right now as a loaner. This car drives like an economy car, fake leather, cheap plastic doors in the back, the engine drones, the cvt is okay though, and it in fact does rattle if you turn the stereo up anymore than halfway, with the BASE stereo.
I'll have to respectfully disagree, this car is basic transportation with a Lexus badge, and feels lifeless
Thank you! People should drive a CX-30 Astina (based on the Mazda3 Astina sedan we have). Now that feels like a true luxury car - both in terms of the high level of standard equipment but not at the cost of lacking “premiumness” and feeling low-rent like how they make high specced Toyotas feel to avoid stepping on Lexus toes’
Typical Australia, just like trying to buy a roof over your head, its getting too expensive for basic cars let alone Lexus (looks sharp though)
Even in my poor Croatia, cars are insane with prices, this lexus base price is 63k aussie $$, and we have much smaller wages. Houses are basically, be rich or get a 30 year loan. No wonder we all live with parents.
@@dwade3202 House prices in Australia are insane !!! Where i am, Average is over one million dollars !
@@dwade3202 In Finland the same, wages are really low and people are poor. People have almost nothing left in their hands after rents or mortgages. The prices of cars and apartments are insanely expensive. It is true that the whole country is poor and indebted.
@@mixalis6168 get out of Sydney mate
@@User-cb4jm it be like that 😂
i love audis and lexus is my 2nd in line
Love lexus too!
I used to love audi but if you cant afford high repair cost in a long run, its worth looking at lexus.
Would you compare ux with gv70? Or NX?
Neither to be honest - it’s a size smaller, more similar to a BMW X2 or Audi Q2.
As a first timer in Australia, what will be your choice of compact family(of 3 adults and 1 child) suv for city and long drives with the budget upto 60k Aud?
Something like a Passat or Octavia wagon. Or a Mazda 6.
Thanks mate
44k for petrol luxury but in victoria i cannot find less than 51k for same car. Any idea why?
44k is before on road costs. Dealer delivery, stamp duty, ctp and registration is all on top.
I am waiting for the steering wheel to be redesigned before any consideration.
U want a rectangular one?
Can someone confirm what material the seats are for just the Luxury model? On the website it looks like fabric and leather..?
Hey Samuel, they're a fake leather - 'vinyl' type material.
Lexus is disappointing, they need to up their game.
They must invest in new engines all-round, they my ditch the cvt in their hybrid models.
CVT on a Lexus hmm !
Does anyone have the number for Lexus, I'm going call them to tell them they're dreaming!!!
911
Lexus seems a bit lost in the market place. They have deleted the IS, GS (I think) and RC model lines. That leaves two/three SUVs, the Camry (sorry, I meant the ES) and the LS. There's not a lot there that looks that interesting (unless you win Tatslotto). My daughter cross-shopped Lexus UX and RC 350 with equivalent Mercedes-Benz models and chose an M-B C Class Coupé. Interestingly, she was NOT interested in BMW or Audi competition (they were "not cool" in the work car park). Having been with her for the test drives, I think she chose correctly.
I know it is not in the same size category and brand level. But I just finished watching Tom's Haval H6 review before this video, and that cost only $33k compare to this UX $55k. Again, i know I am comparing 2 different badge level here, but H6 interior doesn't 'look' like very far away or super cheap. I say 'look' because i haven't 'touch' the real car yet. What I try to say is saving $22k is a lot for ordinary people like me.
I agree, as a fellow people like me, but, the resale on the Haval will be abysmal, literally, whereas in a decade this will come close to the original purchase price of your Haval.
@@jeeves6490 yep I think you are right. Lexus/toyota used car market is so expensive. They hold value really well, especially in Australia. I tried to filter Lexus/toyota in Carsales' search under 40,000 kms odometer, the price is very close to new car price.
You’ll regret getting a Haval when the untested engines cack themselves. It will be years until they can even touch the newly minted reputation for Korean cars, let alone Japanese cars for reliability. You’re better off avoiding the Lexus markup and getting a few years old used Toyota or Mazda, maybe at a high trim level. Or even a Hyundai/Kia for better pricing, is better than risking it in the unknown like the Haval. It is cheap for the fact the brand has no consumer trust behind it so they have to undercut even Kia.
Wow the interior esp the instrument cluster is atrocious..
Should not have to move up a model to avoid fake leather, meant to be a premium brand😳
To be fair, the 'premium' brands such ass Audi, BMW and Mercedes have been using fake leather for over 20 years and no one says a word...
@@SergCarReviews am awarenof that my car has fake leather, horrible in summer gets so so hot, 🤨 would have thought thou Lexus would be a step above the Germans for quality...
@@daweigo6851 I guess its just for a lower price point for entry level... but yeah I hear you they get very hot!
The more I see Lexus...I feel Volvo XC40 is far better value for that money
If you're leasing, you can't own a Volvo long-term anymore. They're practically an electric appliance with their highly over stressed four pots.
Hey mate, I've made a review comparing the UX with the XC40. If you have time you're welcome to watch it and let me know what you think :)
The Lexus ux is faster than a Toyota chr
Yeah. The C-HR is not available with the 2.0L atmo engine.
I don’t understand why the cheaper luxury cars are using vinyl seats. Vinyl seats used to be standard on most cheapest make and model 70’s and 80’s cars. Must be hot and sweaty on hot days. I prefer cloth seats.
It's the appearance really. Mate, if you enjoy Lexus reviews I have a few of them, including the new UXe (as well as driving it from 100% to 0%). If you have time to watch it I would love to hear your thoughts :)
it is better if you show the car rather than showing your face while talking, Anyway Good review.👍👍👍
He is engaging with the viewer. He is presenting, not narrating. If anything that could change, its opening theme. But Tom is great.
