This is a waste of time. If you want to learn a song, you go to the internet and find a chord chart. Then you go to RUclips and search for a guitar lesson. Then you start playing the song.
@@yourguitarsage I've watched many of your videos to learn new songs. You spend too much time constantly hawking your own videos ("go to my video about chord progressions", etc.) but you have been helpful many times. Thank God for the internet!
I learned guitar in 1965 when I was 16, I had a key of A tuning fork to tune my 5th string then tuned my guitar to itself, put on records and matched notes to learn a song, it was a lot of fun work, however it “trained my ear” I can still hear a song and know what key it’s in…great lesson to get on track to learn how to figure out tunes on your own, thanks Erich
As a hobbyist, I can’t overemphasize how important step one is. I call it internalizing a song. It’s the reason I love learning songs from my car cassette days…step one is already done! Thx for the tips.
Greetings Erich you are definitely giving folks the keys to the kingdom right here when it comes to getting songs down and the reason I know this is because this was one of my favorite lessons from that time during the stupid covid shutdown where you very generously live streamed 1-hour teaching sessions Mon-Fri for all 4 weeks of April 2020 🎸 I still have all the notes from all 4 weeks but distinctly remember these particular teachings on how to figure out songs cuz you broke everything down in such a way (just as you're doing here) to where it just landed with me and I was able to pick it all up and apply it straight away and it has definitely served me well ever since. Hard to believe it's already been 4 years....I can still remember how you opened the whole thing up on the first day with the best thing you ever could've said saying "Folks we're gonna embrace the suck together." Not only a great teacher but also a good man 👊🏼
I remember back in art school one of my instructors told us that learning to draw is really about learning how to see. As I have picked up guitar I am realizing that learning how to listen to music is the key to actually making music. This aspect is like learning how to cook rather than always just following recipes.
We learned off vinyl. If the lick was too fast we'd turn 331/3 down to 16 and it would be twice as slow and an octave lower. I have perfect pitch and started with classical guitar at Peabody. I also took theory and composition there. Then I studied with Carl Filipiak for years. But, it was Peabody who told me that I have perfect pitch. We didn't have the internet back then. You used your ear. Kids nowadays can't even do that and many you tube lessons are wrong. Wrong key, wrong chord progression, even wrong lyrics. It's sad 😔

Why ever take training wheels off of a bike then?

I let others know where they can go get more information to help people for free or paid if they want more.

Thank you for brining those memories back to me, my friend. That was a great time of bonding with my students.
Thank you Guitar Sage, for all your help. Learning the 7 chords, in a chord family(C D Minor E Minor F G Am and Bdim), helped me tremendously.
I'm glad it worked out for you!🫵💪
