This hands-down beat any explanation i've found in the manuals. THANK YOU!
Thrilled to hear this, thank you!!
its 2022 and no one explained it better than you sir, thank you.
Thanks a lot for such a perfect presentation and understanding. All A320 pilots should watch this video irrespectively as the FCOM doesn't have such clarity.
Thank you!
By far the best explanation I’ve seen after a 24 year flying career 🎉👍🏽
Thank you appreciate that!
Good thing I studied and wrote this down a few months before my line check. SAVED ME from embarrassment.
Perfect explanation! Thank you!
Very good presentation. Thank you
This just answered all my biggest question about the Airbus! Thank you!
Thank you!! Amazing and simple explanation
Best explanation I got so far.
All speeds are calculated from one, Vs (stall clean). [VLS = 1.23 Vs]. [Vapp = VLS + 5 (or 1/3 wind)]. This is all about keeping a safe speed above stall in case of a wind change.
Very good explanation 👍
Great explanation
This is really easy to understand, thank you so much!
VongolaSkyLion My pleasure! Please let us know if we can help you anyway! 1StepPrep.com
Very good. Thanks
I guess the aircraft will land a Vtarget as long as the wind at tbe threshold is the same as tge wind on the PERF App page.
Thanks for explaining it so well.
Woww,thanks very much,very well explained!!!
jon fly Thank you Capt!!! We appreciate it and appreciate you!
Boom!!! Got it! Nailed my learning curve totally. Very intelligent speed prot target especially in gusty/variable winds. QUEST!? At what point does to je GSmini cecede and Vapp is followed or cc reduced so as to cross 50ft threshold at Vat? From 200 ft?
Thank you so much… God must have put you on this earth to teach, great sir!
Thanks dude!
Very well explained!!!
Appreciate your feedback!!

Love your videos. Subbed.....just one question. With a wind of 100/12 in your example the VAPP should be 137 (139 was for wind 100/21). This throws off all the other calculations by a few knots.
Other factors - Wind gusts say 30Knts. this must be factored into Vref (mainly based on total weight). This would mean Vls +5 + 1/2 headwind + 1/2 wind gusts. = 127+5+1/2 (12) +wind gusts(1/2*30) = 127+5+6+15=153knts.
I see how you're trying to explain this but using the term "constant groundspeed" is misleading.
What if there's a tailwind on the approach at some point in the approach (like windshear, which is when GS mini is most useful)? Using your figures from this example; GS Mini of 127kts, if you had a 10 kt tailwind the actual GS would increase to 137Kts. Not constant. GS Mini maintains a *minimum* groundspeed, not a constant groundspeed. Apart from that, your video was a nice help.
how it work in variable gusty winds or do i have to override A/thr
Keep up the good work
Thanks, will do!
Awesome!
what i got is the Vtarget =Vapp+(current headwind component-curent tower headwind component),its little bit different from what you said in the end.plz correct me if i am wrong
With the A/T active and managed speed..or used the QRH to calculate the vls and vapp.than use selected speed or manual trust to maintain the v target.
Managed speed is the only requirement for GS mini to be functional. No need to have Autothrust engaged
@@1stepprep Managed speed and Approach mode if I'm not mistaken!
Great job for this video ! It was an interrogation that I had during one of my first landing and now I perfectly understand ! Thanks to you !
Excellent!!!
Man! Thank you so much for the video!
You should work for the airlines as a Ground Instructor!!
Hi initially wind component taken was 21kts and 1/3 of that was 7kts..we also assumed that our VLS was 132kts...
So u added 132+7=139kts. Why then would you subtract 12kts to calculate gs mini base line...shouldn’t it be a 21kts subtraction.
The most freaky thing isn't that the guy doing the presentation made a mistake, rather the many comments saying how good and easy his reasoning was couldn't see it either. For people who've no idea what we're on about, look at his formulas for calculating GS mini and Vapp and then ask yourself, how can those ever be the same? Bear in mind his example didn't have zero wind
REALLY USEFUL EXPLANATION
I would say that if there is a tail wind as surface wind the formula should be GS mini baseline = Vapp + wind entered in the perf. app. page
Is it correct?
Vtarget= Gs mini baseline + varying winds.
Hello Juan, I’ve seen pilots that when the wind is variable, like to set the PERF wind so that its a full tailwind, and according to this theory they are actually reducing the GS mini protection. What do you think about this practice?
Yeah that would wipe out the margin of error for wind gusts the system is trying to give them
Do you know him personally Jeff?
I have flown a 3 day with him, here's how it went.
- He never mentioned his RUclips channel or his flight school
- He never talked about anything aviation related outside of what was relevant to our flight
- Bought first round when we went to dinner on day 2
- Always tipped the van driver
- At the end of day 3 I brought up this channel, he smiled and acknowledged it was his.
- He's a very down to earth/humble guy that in person never spoke of instruction but after being asked seemed very passionate about it.
Be careful who you judge Jeff.
ok, cool post. you gonna talk to RR?
i understand at my first time , after 7 years boieng flown
I don't understand, you had wind 100/21 Vapp 139 then you changed wind to 100/12 and in the next sample your Vapp still 139 , but you said that if 1/3 of wind less then Vls + 5 , we should use Vls +5
Yes! VLS+5 or VLS +1/3 wind the greater of the two!! I see your point, we just needed to update the number back to 100/21! The steps to get there ultimately are still the same! Thanks for your comment!
Thanks
Absolutely! @@anvarakhmedov8236

You've explained it, using only direct headwind into consideration. I guess you should also explain it using crosswind and tailwind.
It's exactly the same. Just use the headwind or tailwind component.
Where do I get the VLS from in the first place ? : (
You can find it on the airspeed tape (amber band) also on the Perf Appr phase page in the MCDU. Hope that helps!
@@1stepprep Thank you!! :D
Hi! Will the ground speed mini work using manual thrust? (Auto thrust off)
Ivan Brillante no
Ivan Brillante managed speed is required with A/THR
Ivan, as long as the speed is managed you will get the appropriate speed bugged on the tape (GS Mini active). With ATHR off you would simply need to manually control the thrust to fly the speed. Hope that helps!
Ankur Maggon nope you can have Selected speed and autothrust
Captain Al with selected speed gs mini will not work.

Cool maths but you entirely miss the point of GS mini. If the actual wing is GREATER than the tower wind the target speed will increase as at some point the wind will decrease to the actual tower wind.
Talking about ground speeds etc is meaningless to pilots as we look at air speed and wind.
If the wind is greater than tower wind it will run the target up to allow for the decrease which is coming.
Forget about ground speeds they are useless as is all the plus and minus winds.
Its all about wind in excess of reported wind...its all about simple..

Not a complete explanation…. GS shown on ND is not always GS mini, if the reported winds in HW and in reality it’s TW on approach, GS increases but GSmini remains the same, so ND will show current GS and not GS mini.
Good video, but unfortunately not entirely accurate as it doesn't take into account the changes brought in by the NEO.
What changes in the NEO?
Sure doesn't! Thanks Captain Al!
Sebastien Sorry for the delay! Tricky to answer in this environment but on a CEO delta HWC is 1.0 but on a NEO its 0.33.
Not accurate when the winds change to tail winds..

Good try. Bad effort + bad writing + bad organizing.
And as this presentation is for begginers, you should have mention about Max V target, as many of them will wonder what if headwind become so big that would lead the V target become even greater than VFE in landing config.
Thanks for taking the time to write and for watching!
