The Little Mermaid is an upcoming American musical fantasy film directed and co-produced by Rob Marshall from a screenplay by David Magee. Produced by Walt Disney Pictures, Lucamar Productions, and Marc Platt Productions, it is a live-action/CGI adaptation of Disney's 1989 animated film of the same name, which itself is loosely based on the 1837 fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen. The film stars Halle Bailey in the titular role, with Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Javier Bardem, and Melissa McCarthy in supporting roles. The film follows Ariel, who makes a deal with Ursula to trade her voice to human legs in order to impress Prince Eric, who is saved from a shipwreck.
Plans for a remake of 1989's The Little Mermaid were confirmed in May 2016. Marshall was being courted by the Walt Disney Company to direct the film in December 2017, and much of the main cast signed on from June to November 2019. Production was expected to begin in London between late March and early April 2020 but was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Filming ultimately took place primarily at Pinewood Studios in England from January to July 2021. Lin-Manuel Miranda co-wrote new songs for the remake as the lyricist. Alan Menken returned as the composer for both the score and songs.
The Little Mermaid is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 26, 2023, by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

I don’t understand the hate for this, it actually looks like it’s going to be one of the better live action movies
The hatred this Disney film is receiving is based in Racism and ignorance .
The issue the hate mongers have is with the character Ariel being portrayed by a young girl of color .
Girl, maybe even THEE best
It's ridiculous that there are people who get twisted into knots over an actress (a POC) portraying a fictional being (mermaid,sirens half-fish). Scientists have yet to discover evidence of this phenomenon swimming in our oceans to discern what colour she is. 😅😂

I have a reaction video too and my feelings were very genuine, the little mermaid has ment the world to me since I was 5 years old in 1989 I consider myself an original life long fan, I am beyond excited for this movie, and if it made me get all emotional and happy and excited then in my mind they chose the right cast for it, the trailer was amazing I cannot wait to see the whole movie❤🐠🦀🧜♀️

She's a pro singer, her voice will carry the film. I'm glad they didn't hire an actress who "kina sings". Disney live-action will always be limited by anthropomorphic animals or even furniture in live-action being bizarre. How can you make a real-life crab talk and have a personality??? they can't win that.
Loved the original growing up as a kid. My late granny and I would watch it all the time. It's a classic film. Definetly in my top 5 favourite Disney animated films of all time(excluding Tangled cause that's computer animated).

I have no problem with the actress. What is annoying me about Disney is them remaking so many things to add other races rather than just do new stuff, it feels a bit token to me. Enchanto did so well. Why not make more like that!

They have been doing both. Encanto is not the only new story to come out that features POC. There’s Coco, Moana, Raya and the Last Dragon, Soul, Turning Red, Strange World, and upcoming Wish (November) and Iwaju. People act like Disney hasn’t had an amazing run of diverse and inclusive movies over the last few years, which drives me crazy. No matter how you slice it, they’re not happy that Ariel is Black, be it because she doesn’t look like the character they fell in love with or they genuinely think mermaids should be white.
Is it just me or does the prince look like a mid-30 year old while she looks like a teenager? Creeps me a bit out tbh
Halle Bailey is 22 and Jonah Hauer-King is 27 (he was 25 when the film was made). They only have a fibe year difference. Hope that's a bit reassuring...
