Honeyman, Pete, and Martin were the perfect band for Chrissey. When the lost Pete and Jimmy, they were never as good even with Chrissey’s amazing songs
I love the opening of this video, with each member of the band walking in looking just a bit more bad-ass than the person before; they were a great team.
They look *so* cool. The cover of Pretenders II is one of the most beautiful, romantic, stoic and in hindsight kinda eerie covers ever. It's Americana to me, though most the band is British.
Miss Chrissy and her 3 British guys. My favorite group in the early MTV years, along with Rush. RIP to the other two guys, drugs suck!! At least, Martin is still with the group.
Wow. This does indeed look like the complete original video--I've seen others for this song, but they all have repeated footage. Everything here is shown only once. The guitar bridge is a transcendent moment and just about the best thing the band ever did--the "cloud" footage fits it perfectly.
Memories of working on a YTS job scheme in 1981. It was a painting and decorating firm and we were painting a vicarage with the radio on all day and this played every half hour along with Talking Heads, Roxy Music, Kim Wilde, Human League, XTC and The Jam. The radio announced the engagement of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer.
I'll say it -I don't care how many magazine covers she's been on I have never heard a SINGLE song by Ms Swift. I can't even name you a title! That's 'cos I keep coming here for Blondie, the Pretenders, etc, etc........ ad infinitum
When I was in high school, a friend introduced me to the Pretenders, around 1980. To this day, I thank you, David Scott. You were a better friend than you knew. To this day, one of my greatest influences as a guitarist is James Honeyman Scott. What a line up, between him, Pete, Martin, and Chrissie. James Honeyman Scott & Pete Farndon, resquiescat in pace. Thank you all, sincerely.
You have no idea how envious I am of you to have lived through this time. I was born in 1992, but I’ve always been an old soul who wishes they were in high school 1976-1980. What a time to be alive!
It's good to see the lads having a fun time while doing this number, maybe taking the Mick ?. I find myself smiling along. -great lyrics, powerful sound. This was a great band. Sad that Pete and James have passed on..Great legacy though.
Yes. It makes me especially happy to see James and Pete having a great old time in this moment. They are a special band, this line-up. Those two first albums are two of the best ever.
Another one of my all time WOMAN idols/crushes. I wanted to be Chrissie!! To this day...I am not, haha. Talent, Class, femininity, BALLS. Chrissie Hynde, ladies and gentlemen. LOVE her always
"We'll be together, always this way", is somewhat of a haunting lyric, considering the guitarist and bassist would die within a couple of years from this video. So sad, especially since the band was so close.
bluestate69 How true - my favorite band from the 80's. The irony is that Farndon was fired as a result of his drug problem, and two days later, Honeyman-Scott died of an overdose. But as good as they were before that point, I think Learning to Crawl - released about a year or so after that-was their best album.
Paul Dirac Learning to Crawl is a great album. And it was more than just their 3rd album. It was a triumph. It showed the band's resilience (well, it showed Hynde's and Chambers's resilience). It was also a bit more mature. It is (also) of a tale of two bands, with the pretenders. It was always Crissy's band, but they were forever changed after Scott and Farndon were gone. Then again, even the Police were a different band in 80, then they were in 83.
First! I love this song and love this simple studio video. Farndon looks plowed but the rest of them are having a great time too. What I would pay to be back in '81 now.
To be honest I think it sounds even better with the slight distortion, more raw. Reckon I've watched this about 100 times so far, thanks for posting this forgotten classic!!
I remember the first time I heard this song when it was released. Knocked my socks off then. Still does. Outstanding band - great chemistry. Never the same after Pete Farndon was kicked out because of his drug habit, then JHS died as a result of his. Then Farndon died too - and absolutely tragic year for one of the best and most distinctive bands of the time.
Agree. They were never quite the same after the loss of those two. Kind of like when the Allman brothers lost Duane and Berry within one year. Never the same.
Such a great song….sad to watch this video though-Pete looked so high-he would be dead soon. James also. Sad what drugs do to people. Glad we have the music, at least.
i love this song. Great lyrics.. And the line '"we are all of us sitting in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars" comes from Oscar Wilde
I heard the Pretenders for the first time at 11 yrs old in 1979,it was the best thing I had ever heard and nothing has topped that since, still listening.
Ok now I understand why Martin smiles, Pete pulls a long note before he should've, so Martin smiles at Chrissy., Then Pete turns it back up a notch and looks right at you. 😂
Pete’s laughing because he knows this is a hit song and they are going places. They had lightning in a bottle with Chrissy’s vocals and looks! They had a killer debut album they just released and they were on their way. Sadly, a double tragedy was waiting for them down the road but that was after the second album later on. At least they got to enjoy the first album and tours success. RIP-JHS and PF
Very happy to see the original version of the video available as an individual clip. It had previously been uploaded as an unlisted clip in a multi-video MTV block from the early 80's, but that was hard to find. So, thank you for this!

Every single note hooked. The 80's were just awesome. Check out Martin, this guy was pure rhythm on that drum set. Pure talent with balls. Beautiful just beautiful
I think the reason so many of us latched onto this as kids was because it had style,it was fresh, vibrant and new, different and full of energy, original sounding and creative. All the things that are lacking with alot of music today. If it doesn't sound like it was manufactured by Disney it usually gets no radio play.I do hold out some hope when I hear newer bands like the 'BlackKeys' who eaisly could of been just as big back then. But they, like the Pretenders are all of the things i described above
One of my favorite Pretenders songs! Thank you for sharing! Seems like the videos volume of the audio is too loud for my crappy phone speakers though, and distorts the song.
Love the intro when they each step out of the shadows, but is it my imagination, or is it a reflection, or is the bass player wearing a pair of Zany Zappers at 0:06?
I F---KING LOVED THE ORIGINAL VIDEO!! Remaster this! Yes, they looked like they were having too much fun, and they probably were on the good stuff!! They were also high on the success of Pretenders I and II. Hell, Martin finally got a drum set with a logo!! The flying in the clouds part the most important part of the video and that's the thing they removed, and the accapella at the end too....
Chrissie, Pete, James and Martin, legendary and iconic. Great song!
RIP James Honey-man Scott & Peter Farndon. This band line up is my favorite for the Pretenders!
Still a banger in 2024
There's not much in the world cooler than this. The original lineup was insanely GREAT!
Johnny Marr has said they were a huge influence. Especially those jangly guitars.
Honeyman, Pete, and Martin were the perfect band for Chrissey. When the lost Pete and Jimmy, they were never as good even with Chrissey’s amazing songs
@@Slipmahoney21they also changed their sound when they died. That was a big factor in why they weren’t as good as the OG 4

They look *so* cool. The cover of Pretenders II is one of the most beautiful, romantic, stoic and in hindsight kinda eerie covers ever. It's Americana to me, though most the band is British.
A brilliant observation that's spot on.
This is why I like the Pretenders, such a cool looks. The hair, the fashion. Early 80s, man how can I explain.
Absolutely
Miss Chrissy and her 3 British guys. My favorite group in the early MTV years, along with Rush. RIP to the other two guys, drugs suck!! At least, Martin is still with the group.

Like Brigitte Bardot!!
Fell totally in love with this song in 81, Still love it! Best Pretenders song!
I cannot believe that this video is nearly 40 years old. I still remember watching it on MTV in my childhood home, as if it were only yesterday.
Do you member the MTV commercial featuring a clip of James Honeyman-Scott showing off his guitar collection while wearing a tutu?
damn.....just think of the music we've missed out on when james and pete passed away....such a shame..
