- Thrilled to complete my first ultra after having Finley 2 years ago, especially after my DNF at Manx Mountain Marathon last month. Very much enjoyed the Ultra-Trail Snowdonia (UTS) 50k by UTMB, particularly finishing in just under 13 hours when the course cut off was 14 hours. My watch said 35 miles (56km!) with 3,560m ascent by the end! Whoop!
This was thanks to coach Tim Piggot from HP3 Coaching who advises us to calculate prior where we should be and what we might eat or do when in the race, either to beat the cut offs or achieve a certain time. With my gradient profile of the race scribbled with timings for each summit and checkpoint and what I might eat between each I felt prepared, in control and zen throughout.
I was also particularly impressed with how friendly all the runners were to each other throughout the race on such a hot day, asking if people were ok and being supportive. I found it a very welcoming atmosphere.

Things that slowed me down included:
1. My feet - I had to stop twice to put K-tape on the arches due to blistering there. Possibly took 30 mins total? It came off when sweaty, must experiment with using more tape to hold it on, different shoes (trying the Saucony Xodus Ultra 2s currently) and have ordered some Sidas insoles and socks, and some more Bridgedale socks.
2. Filming - this is my job so I need to do it, but I tend to take waaaaaay too much, thinking I can't miss out on capturing that beautiful view or this section of the course to show it to viewers etc. I film while moving along but it defo slows me down slightly and takes up more effort and brain power. Used 3 GoPro batteries AND my whole phone battery and still ran out just before the finish! Need to be more conservative on my Lakeland 50!
3. Queuing - this is inevitable on such a huge race with 1300 competitors combined with hikers on Wales' highest, most popular mountain. I was held up on the first rocky descent down the Pyg Track and the scrambling section of the 2nd climb up the Watkin Path. I don't know if this was actually a good thing in stopping me going too fast early on in the race or just delayed me. Either way I made it round within the cut offs and had a great race!

Captured the day brilliantly, thanks for the video and well done. "I don't care if there is a dead sheep, I just need water" 😂
Ha ha, yep, and I was fine! Thanks really kind of you to make such a lovely comment :) Claire
Claire, I’ve now watched a multitude of UTS Snowdonia 2023 videos, and I have to say that yours is my favourite. Superb vlog of the event!!!
You came past me like a mountain goat on the first descent of Snowdon, all whilst filming. Hence I do appear in your rear-view-mirror for a few moments at that point.
Kudos to you, not only for a great video, but also for finishing (something that I was unable to do as I was timed out at the last aid station).
Thanks so much WH that is so kind of you, I'm so sorry to hear you were timed out, will you do the race again? It was really really tough, you did amazingly to get to the last CP! Claire
Fantastic video Claire, great cintent and an amazing achievement. I've spent the last few days watching all the videos and have thrown my hat in the ring for next year's 50k 😬
Ah how wonderful, I wish you all the best for next year's race! You will love it! Do lots of hiking hill training...! Claire
Hope you enjoy my film of the UTS 50k! Did you do the race (can you spot yourself in the film?) or are you thinking of it for 2024? Let me know in these comments! Fantastic Viewing - one more of many on your journey in your Running World- upmost respect to you, I still have an Ultra to do, this could be the one maybe.
Thanks Mark! Gosh yes this is defo a cracking ultra, I wouldn't do it as a first one, it's very technical and hilly, I'd start with something easier!
They're a bit like chips... crisps? No one can have just one! 😂
Oh Claire this is delightful and you are rightfully SO happy doing it! :) well done, can't wait to see more from you. x
Aw thanks NC! What a lovely comment! Claire
Fantastic video Claire! You captured the terrain and the essence of the race perfectly. Watching you all go up that final climb brought back some hard memories though 😂 ...and this video really made me want a drone 🤦♂
That final climb!!!! Thanks Chris, you did a fab race! Great film of yours too really enjoyed your insights. It was my race friend's hubby that had the drone, so lucky to get that footage! The permissions are wild these days, I sold mine as never used it it was such a faff!
Loved how you surprised yourself running parts of the race you didn't expect to. Those are the best races. It was the same for me.
Ha ha ha I know, I recently did the Tissington Trail marathon and found the last 4 miles incredibly difficult to run so I was truly surprised to find myself running easily at those distances and beyond during this race. Just shows how hiking is diff to running in these long hilly things eh! Claire
Definitely one of the best videos I've seen of this event - nice one!
Wow thanks so much that is so kind of you to say this :)
Awesome job on the run and the footage! You really captured the day.
Thanks very much HM! Was a great day out!
Great video and insight to a great race. Very well done 👍
Thank you Mickey! Very kind of you, Claire
amazing!!! Congrats on the Race. 100% the comeback. great film too.
Thanks JZ! Really enjoyed the race, highly recommended!
Great film, what a epic day! Well done Claire
Thanks so much JL!
Oh wow! This is definitely on my ‘to do’ list now!
Oh you would totally love this race Mel, nice and hilly! Defo recommend it for you next year
Well done. Amazing effort 👍
Thanks Chris, it was a fab day!
Thank you so much for this video and well done! 🤩UTS is on my dream list of ultras. You inspire! Greetings from Sweden
Thanks Jeanette, it is a WONDERFUL route, very technical and I'm not sure I would have completed it within the time limit if it was bad weather, it would have been very hard. I really want to do Tromso Skyrace, I know that's in Norway but it's over in your direction! Claire
Well done. Great effort! 👍🍷
Thank you EG! It was a lovely race, couldn't believe that weather! Claire
Awesome work Claire, well done!!!! Great video!!!! :)
Thanks Cy! Was beautiful!
Namaste from Nepal. All the best you all respected runners. Respectfully hug
Namaste :)
Great video and run, well done!
Thanks BP!
We'll done what a calm and organised comeback. So happy for you.Great video, so professional and positive and excellent sound and music and gorgeous images.
Aw thanks GN! Very kind of you. Had a great race and really enjoyed it!
Brilliant video . Well done Clare 🎉
Thank you! 😀
Well done Claire,great video
Thank you!
Great video, thanks for sharing. It looks like you had the best run! It was slow going down the Pyg trail and the next section after CP1 on the 100K was very tough, I didn't think I'd finish at that point with so far to go from there. Thankfully the course on the 100K had a bit more runnable section from CP4 to CP5 where I stuffed my face with Chili which kept me going. No queue up Snowdon at 3:00am thankfully. I had to watch for cut offs as only had 30 minutes at most to play with. I managed to figure out from posts how to switch from Course through to my normal trail running on my Garmin Fenix 6, so it lasted easy through the race. Verry boggy between mountains but fantastic sunny day, all the views!!! I had one hour 32 minutes to spare at the end, so pleased with that. Well done for finishing the 50K, are you doing the 100K next year?
Wow, that's incredible Mark well done you! The 100k sounds very very tough, almost Bob Graham type category tough! Last time I did anything that big was 10 years ago so it might be a while yet... glad you did it though, fantastic achievement! Claire
Great stuff claire! X
Thanks Adam so much for the loan of the GoPro at the end!
Awesome comeback Claire! Well done!!
Thank you!! 😁
Well done on the comeback Claire!
Thanks TC! Enjoyed it!
Incredible video, incredible job!! I could feel the "death march" up the hills, and the thrill of the breathtaking scenery! And the lack of cares given about unfiltered water and new tasty treats in race day! 😂 👍You're an ocean away, but I've added this to the bucket list! That's my kind of race, though i imagine it's treacherous in wet/ icy conditions! Great job everyone!
Hey Kelly you'd definitely love this one! Hope you can come over one day to do it! Claire
Wow, this is an amazing video and so unusual to be able to see where you're going!
Well done Claire - a great reult after the Manx Marathon issue. Top work!
Thanks TR! Really enjoyed the race
Also you captured myself and the wife at 9.14 😂 we must have hit CP1 at the same time
Awesome! Hope you had a great race!
Well done Claire! 👏 Wonderful video, it captured the event well. I distinctly remember coming off Moel Eilio and thinking that was the last climb to be confronted with another peak!
Oh no! That last climb was a killer wasn't it! Well done on your race you had a great day!
Amazing video, Well done Claire!! Reminds me of all the pain & joy 😂
Hey Amit! Great to meet you out there! Thank you for sharing that 'last' climb with me! :))))
I finished at about the same time as you, so this video really captures my day as well as yours - thank you. I had a lovely time as well! (My comment about the water situation at that stream post-YW2 was similar to yours as well!)
Ha ha ha! Extra water stream buddies! Glad you had a good race too!
Oh Clair! I got a bit emotional at the end. Well done.
Aw thanks AS! Super nice of you! THank you!
Well done!! Comeback-Claire!!
Thanks Baz! Super thrilled!
Congratulations Claire! You got me at the start line! 👍 and then again just behind the unfortunate 🇳🇴 runner that fell over right on the 'go'. Well done on your comeback 😊
Awesome! Hope you had a great race Lee, and didn't trip over that poor guy!
Also, what a comeback Mama! 🎉🤩💪🏽
Thank you Mel!
Really good video Claire. 😀
Thanks Andrea!
Fantastic round up of the race Claire thanks for sharing. You just made me re-live the Watkin/South Ridge climb and the Moel Eilio descent. Think I had blocked those from memory but obviously wasn’t enough to put me off signing up for next year. Well done on finishing too, tough race!
Ha ha ha, yes that Watkin Path climb was immense wasn't it. And the final climb(s!) Well done us!!!
Amazing.
Thank you John!
great job
Thanks AS!
Well done on the finish, I did the same race and it was great to see the footage, brought back memories of a tough but good day with wonderful views.
Awesome, it was such a beautiful day wasn't it, well done on your race!
Great to see what Snowdon actually looks like... I could only see a few meters ahead when I went up it (and at the top). I could see more going down Llanberis and that was lovely but you couldnt have had a better day for yours!
I know! I've been up so many times, I never realised it was so pointy!!!
Great to see lots of jolly footage..... looks like the UTS is possibly reverse of the Xterra Ultra Snowdonia (this July) - Snowdon is at the end of mine
And look at the size of the water stations.... OMG compared to last years heat wave - water was running out every where and I used the streams too
Good luck for your race SH!
Thank you so much for this video and wonderful finish! By the way, were they lots of official event photos of ourselves because I barely see any photographers especially on top of the peaks.
Thanks glad you liked it! I haven't searched for any photos, they should be in the gallery on the website I would have thought, hope that helps :) Claire
Congratulations Claire. It was great to meet you!! I've just signed up to give this another go next year. Nice to see you captured me running down the Pyg track. It would be great if you're able to send me that short clip. Ill find you on IG to ask, in case you dont see this.
Hey Haroon, I got a bit more of you than what's in the film, I can send it all, IG me and we will connect :) Hope you're recovering ok, was such a hot day! Lovely to meet you there. Claire
Too video, top effort, too person! 🎉
Aw thanks David! Very kind of you :)
FairPlay well done 🎉
Thanks Ian!
Wonderful video Claire! No idea how you managed all that filming as well as running the course.
I know, must film less, might get round quicker lol! Thanks Simon it was a lovely day out and a lot easier than looking after a toddler tbh! ;) Claire
Congratulations, what a great race….so glad to see the come back after your last race. Which we all have in countered through out our race history. By the way what camera did you film this on? Great footage…have a great weekend.
Thank you! I used the GoPro Hero 8 for this, lovely camera!
Hi Claire, I hope you are well? I am doing Lakeland 50 in a few weeks time and wondered if you had any pearls of wisdom for getting around the course? Thanks Rob
Congratulations 🎉,that last hill looked hideous though 😮
Ha ha it went on forever!
