In Dante’s inferno ‘Ptolemaea' is “a place in hell designated for traitors against guests in their home.” I think this is a really smart reference for the kidnap and murder storyline

@@bennshoutssome people think it’s where Ethel thinks her abuser should be, as he betrayed her by selling her into sex work, and some people think it’s where she is imagining herself, as she betrayed (abandoned) her mother to be with him. It’s very interesting either way.
Edit: btw it was a hallucination of being in hell, due to the drugs he put her on. She wasn’t really in hell.

i believe the album tells a story, set in 1991, it details the character’s troubled relationship with religion, her old flame, her father (the preacher, a beloved member of the community even 10 years after his death), and her eventual kidnapping and murder. ptolemaea is about her tripping on drugs the man she meets, isaiah, gave her. august and televangelism are about her escape, capture, murder and ascent to heaven. sun bleached flies is her in heaven and strangers is her body, in a freezer in his basement as he supposedly eats her.
there is so much more to the story.

"Ptolemaea" is my favorite song on this album.
It's intense, jarring, and the *scream.*
The scream towards the climax always makes my whole body tense and my eyes start to tear up.

everytime i listen to this again it gets more heartbreaking, especially hearing her sound so hopeful when you know what’s going to happen to her, the fact august underground is the name of a snuff film and combined with her lyric about being in a polaroid picture is just so haunting, we often desensitise crime scene photos but to get to know this character and see her become a part of that just makes it feel so real, i never knew an album would make me never watch a true crime video ever again she’s just such a great writer and so talented.

this whole story is tragic and heartbreaking and beautiful and I love hayden and her mind. each song hurts in its own ways. thoroughfare is such a good song because, as you were saying in the video, it gives you hope that this will finally be the one; ethel will finally be happy with the man she’s traveling with, but then it turns out he’s the one that kills her so when you’re re-listening, you know the ending so you (or at least I did) cry listening to her hope for love but know how it ends 😭😭 preacher’s daughter is my aoty so far hands down. nothing comes CLOSE

This is my current album of the year. I didn't realise when I first listened to it, the story behind it (abuse, running away, being kidnapped and murdered). It's worth listening to the album alongside the lyrics and annotations on Genius. It adds so much meaning to the music, like when you realise when she ends the album singing: "Mama just know that I love you / And I'll see you when you get here" she's singing from beyond the grave.

when i saw august underground as a track name I knew we were in for some shit… I’m a big horror movie fan and I remember reading about the august underground movies a couple years ago. it’s a film trilogy that basically is fake found footage movies that follow a serial killer and his accomplice as they film all their murders. my guess is that this confirms the idea that Ethel is murdered by isaiah (who drugged her during ptolemaea) and televangelism and sun bleached flies follows her death. crazy shit this album is SO GOOD and she’s a genius

Ethel to me is Fiona Apple and Lana del Rey's love child it's perfection

She seems to genuinely capture something that Lana only “flirts” with Lana it’s “trailer trash” but it’s also Las Vegas and you can always go back to your parents nice home. Where as Ethel seems encapsulated and trapped behind a “wall” and having to be contented with a life that is undesirable to most. Like literally I’m certain she still lives in a small and in the middle of nowhere town and she is trans on top of everything else.

@@GNICHO you've worded it so well, i think it definitely has to do with hayden creating ethel/preacher's daughter as a character/concept album, and therefore you get to be fully immersed in the PD universe, whereas the persona of lana del rey, although still appropriating the americana aesthetic, is fundamentally still telling the story of elizabeth grant

@@anniez6817 no I think there's an untouchable darkness in both Lana and Ethel's art, but like Lana's horror is ultimately a sort of silver lined suffering and that's what's "hot" about it, where Ethel cain comes across as sort of like a biblical suffering. Like some sort of metal magdelene. lana isn't even seen as attractive in the media, and in contrast Ethel's voice is so sirene like and people really find her sexually appealing. Ethel draws you in. (in the sexual sense) naturally then it feels carnal. In comparison lana is like having sex drunk. you see glimpses of true heaven in drunken soft distortion. Where Ethel is like hellish torture, but then you have like a 10.000 year long orgasm.
