In Dante’s inferno ‘Ptolemaea' is “a place in hell designated for traitors against guests in their home.” I think this is a really smart reference for the kidnap and murder storyline
@@bennshoutssome people think it’s where Ethel thinks her abuser should be, as he betrayed her by selling her into sex work, and some people think it’s where she is imagining herself, as she betrayed (abandoned) her mother to be with him. i believe the album tells a story, set in 1991, it details the character’s troubled relationship with religion, her old flame, her father (the preacher, a beloved member of the community even 10 years after his death), and her eventual kidnapping and murder. ptolemaea is about her tripping on drugs the man she meets, isaiah, gave her. august and televangelism are about her escape, capture, murder and ascent to heaven. sun bleached flies is her in heaven and strangers is her body, in a freezer in his basement as he supposedly eats her. there is so much more to the story.

this whole story is tragic and heartbreaking and beautiful and I love hayden and her mind. each song hurts in its own ways. thoroughfare is such a good song because, as you were saying in the video, it gives you hope that this will finally be the one; ethel will finally be happy with the man she’s traveling with, but then it turns out he’s the one that kills her so when you’re re-listening, you know the ending so you (or at least I did) cry listening to her hope for love but know how it ends 😭😭 preacher’s daughter is my aoty so far hands down. nothing comes CLOSE
