Abandoned Desert Homestead or Mining Camp?

- Lead, silver and gold ore were discovered around 1906/07, and the first shipment was hauled out by 12 horses. In 1915, the mine was under new ownership and water was pumped from the shafts until 1927. In the 1970s, an underground survey revealed hundreds of animal skeletons. It was discovered that the water was ladened with sulphate!
A six-bedroom bunkhouse and ball mill was built in the 1930s, and the head frame was constructed in the 1950s. Not long afterwards, the mine was deserted. At its peak, 75 people were employed.
With closer inspection, at some point in time, the bunk house was modified into a ranch house, with corrals and pens at the rear, and gardens were planted.
Due to continuous vandalism, we are not giving out the name or location of this mining camp. Please feel free to share your memories in the comments below without divulging the whereabouts of this “pin”. Thank you for your understanding.

Steven and Andrea --- YES , I was there in 1968 . Glad to see that the mining equipment is still there . If you go out in the Joshua forest there is a large water tank and a ''rocking horse'' pump on a drilled well . When i was there , there were clusters of Grapes on the Grape Vines around the big house , I tasted one and it was bitter , and I quickly spit it out . I'm glad that you heard the ''voices'' , I heard both ''voices and music'' when I was there . That big house is Haunted , I tried spending the night there to photograph the apparitions . All I had was an old 35mm Argus C-3 (NO sound recording) with the large M-5 Flash Bulbs . I couldn't last the whole night . . . . too much weird stuff going on ; numerous apparitions , several different voices , music , the rattling of chains - and not a single chain visible anywhere , doors opening and closing by themselves . Later , when I had the film developed , every picture that I had taken of an apparition was fogged . I DARE YOU to go back there and spend the night and record everything on Video and Audio . --- < Doc > .
We thought we were going crazy Doc. We are so glad to know this has happened to someone else. While upstairs I had just turned the camera off, but the mics and my headphones were still on and I was listening to a full blown conversation. Which we both heard that's why I scrambled to turn the camera back on and record walking downstairs, we seriously thought someone would be walking through the front door. We may absolutely have to go back here and investigate more thoroughly.

@@banjoman483 --- I really don't know , but the look of everything showed that nobody had lived or worked there in a long , long , long time . I would imagine that the last time that it was operated was right up to the time of the Presidential Decree to shut down all non-essential mining at the start of World War 2 . --- < Doc > .

I believe the chain on the posts crossbeam was for a winch or hoist. Maybe for hanging and dressing game or livestock then taken in and processed on that butcher block. Great videos . Love the deserted desert 🏜️ towns!

Lots of activity in that house. Lots of orbs flying by as well. Heard someone walking up the stairs, a door shut, music, and voices. It would be fun to spend a night there to really catch some activity. You wouldn't get any sleep, but it would be fun to document all the activity in that house. This explore was awesome with all the artifacts left behind.

The chain on the cross bar timber is for pulling a car motor out. The engine air cleaner is from a chey car mid 60's. Space room next to the 55 gallon drum is the generator room with the concrete wood stand left.
Hello again, Andrea & Stephen. Thank y’all for having another interactive-video for everyone to join in on! I listened on my iPhone first of all; heard several sounds but wasn’t satisfied. Switched to Wireless EarPods and really improved the sound quality. Here’s a list of what I heard. Let me know if it matches what y’all saw and heard. Thank you. At 40:20, horn honks from Tonto. 40:35 White Fluffy object flies upward on Left side of screen. 41:06 2 light streaks on floor in front of Island & Front Door change their position on the floor about an inch or two. (can actually see them move). 41:45 Noises started, sounds like door opens & closes plus 4 footsteps. Also, sounds like a humming sound or vibration. 42:20-42:37 sounds like wind blowing. Also at 42:24 a voice sound. 43:10 a thud sound. 43:15 a sound. 43:22 a sound. 43:28 a sound. 43:38-43:58 creaking sounds. The EarPods really makes a difference in the amount of sounds you can pick up from your phone. Did you take notice of the windows covered in Plywood? Have you ever seen that done with the rectangular slots cut in them? I’ve never seen that done before, but it makes sense to let the Light in and still protect the inside of the building. Pretty much the same things, Cary. We heard voices earlier but figured it was some explorers - but no one was there! We have had several comments about viewers hearing music too. One viewer knows the place well and said that he would never stay in the house at night! Too much scary stuff goes on. Who knows. I was unable to find out if something had happened there. So it will remain a mystery. Always enjoy hearing from you.
That was certainly a fascinating sojourn you were on, the fact that there was so much mining equipment left behind is interesting because one would have thought that had they intended to abandon the mine they would have disassembled the machinery and moved it to another site or sold it on for further use, elsewhere.
The ranch house was of note in that when the last people to live there departed they had the windows carefully boarded up in that there were vents in all of the boards so that the house could air, so that possibly they intended to move back at some point or that it was up for sale and evidently it did not sell. I did not hear any voices other than your own!

Thanks, John. We often find mining equipement, but unfortunately, there are too many people out there who come in and loot. The Park Rangers have told us of many stories about missing objects.

Sometimes that’s where they hang the name of the ranch or what brand the ranch is using. It would be usually the main entrance to the ranch property. Not really a gate but a property entrance
The posts with the chain I truly believe was to hang a beef while butchering it . At least on my Aunts ranch that was what they used it for. Had a long chain to hoist it up by the hind feet (yes,it's dead already) and then well the process begins.
As a figure of speech you found a real GEM with the mining equipment still intact .At the beginning when you fast forward the adventure it made us more curious of what's to come ⛏️🏆thank you for your discovery that we all tagged along great adventure 🇺🇸

They had coal bins too. Wonder what a water test from the open pit could tell you. Definately some sounds at the end. A piano key being struck twice, rustling sounds, bangs ,creaking, voices, etc. Crazy.
That it killed hundreds of animals so obviously bad water we'd say!

Not sure if it was a bug or orb. We didn't really catch anything else apart from the creeping of the floor and what sounded like someone was moving around. Although that could have been the wind!

A facsinating place ,the house is huge,love the doors,and still so much good lumber.We kept our home canned foods in the cellar because it's always cooler than outside also went there in case of storms .very nice great job as usual,thank you 👍❤️

Absolutely loved this "Pin." Your editing and filming is really starting to shine. Place almost looks like both a placer and a under ground operation/explore. Was impressed, wonder if it's for sale? The graduated numbers nails/pegs could have been for hanging wrenches on. Had some like that in my garage, in the hopes that they would be put back there after use, but 9 out of 10 times i'd find them on the side walk, in the drive way, heck even in the garden once. Makes ya wonder why a wrench would be in the garden. Never asked. Really enjoyed, had time for 2 cups of coffee, and a danish. Yee-Haa! Ready for the day now.

You used to be able to order house kits from Sears. A lot of abandoned houses look like Sears houses to me. You still can order house kits from various suppliers. A good deal for the do it yourselfer who is not in a hurry to move in.
Hey Stephen n Andrea, I heard voices but not sure at what point in video. You two didn't react the first time I heard them. Glad I am not going loopy. Lol
We heard voices earlier, but thought they were other people looking around outside, so didn't take too much notice. One of our viewers worked there in the 60s and has since told us of the "voices and music"!!

Someone else said they could hear music playing as well. We honestly heard on several occasions conversations happening. We may go back here in the future and see if we can capture more.
What a gorgeous landscape and homestead. It's something about the expanse... miles of spectacular views. I live in Northern New Mexico, and we have our own stunning version of high desert. Where Georgia O'Keeffe lived and painted. It's truly magical.
We always take some extra time to take in and enjoy the surrounding landscape at these locations. It makes them even more special to us, thinking about when they were first settled. Thanks Jeannie. We will definitely be through at some point!
Hi,
Andria-- give him a kick you know where-- referring to you as an " old mine" ( the start ) The "thing" with three holes ( 8.05 ) it looks like a" Bain Marie " for keeping food hot. Down below there's a small gas flame heating the oval jacket . This was filled with water that was heated by the gas flame. The three holes are where the containers of food slid in ,when in place put the food inside & close the lid. The hot water kept the food -- hot ! without it drying out. Still waiting for you to find a decent " Chippy "...... 🙂
Oh got ya. That makes sense being a food warmer. Haven't seen one before.
This place looks so peaceful. I'd love to know how to do oil painting, and paint scenes of this place, as I love desert scenes. I've got a oil painting that I bought in Morro Bay of sand dunes. It reminds me of the sand dunes near Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley, CA.
I'm retired now and thinking of traveling about and fixing up what ever I can. Loose steps, roofing replacements, window and doors. I. Have a recycle contact that I can get pretty cheap replacements.
That sounds amazing. There are several groups you can join. Normally jeep groups, which go around fixing up cabins and stocking them with emergency items.

The chain up on the rail road ties may have been used to support an engine hoist or some other block and tackle rig, to lift engines out of trucks for example.

What an interesting find and it does look like both. The way the trees are planted it makes you think of a wine vineyard. At the end of the tape I thought I did hear something but it could have just been the wind. Was it slightly windy that day?
There were wind gusts that day, so it is hard so say Paul.
At 13:26 you open a cabinet in the kitchen that has screened shelves, an opening at the top and if you looked, an opening in the bottom at the floor. This was so cool air would come up from under the cabin and flow up through the cabinet and out the top for keeping vegitables like potatoes and onions cool and dry. It could easily have been that the Homestead house was where the manager or owner of the mine lived and his wife did all the cooking and most cooks did the gardening as well. Growing your own veggies was easier and cheaper than importing them in from other areas.
That is very possible. It was a homely place, although said to be haunted! We would have loved to see it in its heyday with the garden full of veggies.

The numbers are standard sizes of plumbing fittings in the US. Probably was a storage bin.

I’m amazed at all the effort someone put into that lonely place . It would be so neat to see old photographs I bet it would be hard to recognize. If that old house was fixed up I bet it would be really “ posh” as Andrea said . Andrea ! You said you were “ looking for a date” and with Stephen standing right there. You shouldn’t hurt his feelings like that . 🤣🤣. Loved seeing these old homes in their
post dream state; this one had so much of its own unique personal charm . But yeah , I heard swooshing when y’all were outside eating doughnuts . And several times like a sound like sliding a book on a counter and then like a click sound . I know people want you to go stay there at night . Ugh! Not my cup of tea, I’ve heard of those spirits following people home . I’m convinced evil spirits haunt those places , every people and nation on earth talk about such things . No way they all just came up with this on their own independent of each other . Anyway Ive experienced what I believe to be two different spooked houses while working , once in a very remote area in a Ms. swamp . Only house down a lonely road , some wealthy folks fish camp . My dad and I stayed the night there by ourselves because the drive home was so far - or so we thought . Something came in the house at like 2 or 3 in the morn and walked around . I was scared spitless and so was my dad . It was the worst vulnerable feeling . No thanks . But love you guys, thanks for making it feel like we’re their with you on a trail of discovery !
Thanks for sharing your "encounter" with us Ron. We do believe that energies can be left behind - whatever you want to call those energies, ghosts, spirits etc. We have had several "encounters" ourselves over the years. We do use a lot of sage after we go on these explores, and give ourselves sage baths and sage Tonto too. Not sure if it helps, but the Native Americans use it as you know. We do it anyway - just to be on the safe side. Several people commented that they too heard things even music. One of our viewers knows the place very well and said it was haunted. I was unable to find any info about who lived here or if anything happened. So who knows. We didn't feel anything just heard voices who were probably hikers and the wind carried their sounds making them seem closer than they were. That's the logical explanation! Who really knows.

@@PinInTheAtlasThanks for the follow up info. I know you have a lot of comments to read so I won’t go into any more personnel stories but I’ve had two more and one of some friends I used to have . It was very real ( the wife was really traumatized because I think our materialist modern mind doesn’t seem to believe such things are possible ) it had to do with an old unoccupied home in the country. Long and short of it they saw what looked to be orbs with floating fairy or elf like beings in them. They said they were scary fairies the way they appeared and the horses took off terrified . I 100 percent believe them because they didn’t believe in such things snd it really took them by surprise . It scared them both but the wife - it really shook her up. Apologies if this was too long. Not sure if you want us to get into personal stories. The whole ghost phenom really is mysterious and intriguing , it’s so interesting to hear the stories . Just Leary about seeking them , nevertheless I don’t let that me stop me from exploring old homes either .

Ahh, that was quite the place! Very interesting. Loved the inclusion of close-up shots and the short sped up parts (+sound) to keep things moving along. Can't say that I heard anything, but it certainly had you check outside and even call out. Spooky.
We've since found out from other viewers, one in particular who had worked there back in the 60s, that the house is known for it's "spookiness". Voices, footsteps and even music have been heard. (We didn't hear any music, just voices). Glad you enjoyed it Peter.

We have several videos coming up that we haven't disclosed locations. It's such a shame that we feel we need to do that. We spoke to several Rangers, and the vandalism has increased so much with social media and in the last two years.. They gave us locations on the grounds that we keep them a "secret". And you know us, we keep our word.

So it looks like somewhere in the 1970s somebody was trying to rehab that house because of the newspapers dated from the mid-70s upstairs??
That is a strong possibility. The house was more of a home rather than a mine camp, so we thing ranchers may have taken over. Not sure when the place was abandoned.
Those beds are indeed used for people with old limbs. You might find them in hospitals and my grandmother of 98 has one.. It helps her not beeing bed written. Pretty interesting to find it in the dessert tough..

We know that the ming was still in operation in the 50s. The homesteaders could have stayed longer.
Looking at the pump/compressor? It is probably a cooling device. Way before I was born..
In the time frame you are talking about horses were used à lot.
Another interesting video, looks like you found the septic system, there had to have been a well somewhere also.

Jerome is a fun place to explore, Merry. We were hoping to film on our visit, but it was just too busy. Lots of tourists. maybe another time!

The end -- where you left the camera alone, could hear a car horn go -- Beep-Beep. could hear muffled voices but it sounded like you two. Somthing fluttered past the camera lens ( a moth ? ) :-)
The beep-beep would have been us unlocking Tonto, and the muffled voices as we left were us outside, You'll hear us say, "Turn the mic off so it doesn't pick us up". As far as something fluttering, it could have been an insect or dust particle.
@25:17, looks like it could have been a "Cherry Picker" for pulling the engine out of a truck.

I didn't see or hear anything but, I am hard of hearing. Have a question, how long do you take between exploring till you go to your next destination? How long till you map out where you go to next? Why not show what you do at your camp site or wherever you stay and show what you do to relax or anything else you do. Tell us how you find your next destination. Very much a craftsman style house. The front windows, pocket doors and the tapered square columns all scream craftsman style. I would say homestead but built between 1900 and 1930, maybe...🤷🏼♀️

I love your videos! It seems that you research everywhere you go and are cautious, but I have a question for you. Have you ever been told to get out somewhere, or even had a gun pointed at you?
Thanks,Denise. Glad you are enjoying our adventures. No we haven’t. We always check that there are no posted signs. We never knowing venture onto private property and are always respectful. These places are on public lands. Most are well documented and on maps. And some the local law enforcement and park rangers have told us about. We listen to our gut too. If something doesn’t feel right we abort. Hope that answers your question.

@@PinInTheAtlas it doesn't appear to have suffered much other than being in the elements compared to some I know of that have been pretty much decimated and graffited to oblivion . I used to think that people were stingy not letting people know of these places but after a few years of going out to these places that people know of it becomes clear as to why the locations are no longer shared . I grew up with parents that loved looking for rocks ( rock hounds) as a kid I didn't enjoy the peace and quiet and beauty of the desert as I was a kid and we went all over the desert quite often yet I ended up moving to the high desert over 30 years ago raised my children here now that I am 70 and my son and daughter help entertain me because I have had stage 3 cancer for the past 8 years so we go on alot of our own explores it keeps me going and engaged and helps share with them the things I have seen out there. Anyways I enjoy your channel and perspective cheers keep up the good work. 👍

It was very strange, we don’t hype anything up unless it’s for comedic effect. We genuinely heard conversations and thought people were walking up on us. Very weird experience.
Just a couple of suggestions. Most of the folks I know who watch a lot of RUclips videos prefer videos that run from 10-18 minutes maximum. People's lives are so busy that it's difficult to click on a video over about 18 minutes. A 20 or 30 minute is just too much time. If you have to have a 30 minute video to cover your story, you'd be better off to offer it as two fifteen minute videos. Do a part one and a part two. Many folks watch RUclips on big screen TVs these days. Most TV's sold today are 'smart' TV's. Next, if you video goes full length (straight through), it's easy to forget to give you a thumbs up because they have to try to back track to be able to go to the place where you can give a thumbs up.....not like on a computer screen. It's a pain and it's easy to just not take the time to go back and give a thumbs up. You can make it very easy for your regular watchers by starting your video and letting it run for a minute (a prologue). Then do a 60 second video of 'your' story and then after a minute go back to your story of the day. That minute of intermission can be a short segment you just cut and paste into every single video. For the thousands of 'regular' folks who only watch your videos on a big screen TV, it makes it very easy to give you a thumbs up EVERY time they watch one of your videos. They do it right at the beginning. Your one minute 'ad' is their signal to give you that all important thumbs up. My wife and I have been following several RUclips travel couples and individuals for years. We've seen the progression of their videos. They have ALL gone to the format I just suggested. Some go back over seven years. They all now have between 1-2 million subscribers. With income from RUclips and other RUclips associated income sources, they are all making $500K -$2 million a year of income. I'm not trying to be critical but just some suggestions that might help you more quickly accrue more subscribers and thumbs ups. I'd like to see you get out of having to live in the bad of a pickup truck. As I said before, that's a tough way to live for a long time. Best wishes! ..............Phil
Hi, Phil. Thanks for the comment and suggestions. We do have shorter videos in that time frame on our channel. We have stated before that when there are many exciting things to see on an explore, we wouldn't break it up or cut it short. As a viewer of lots of RUclips, you should also notice the trend that Part 1 and 2 don't necessarily work as the second part never performs as well. Then the whole story can get lost, and we don't want to short change our history. We understand that time is short these days, and people don't always have a lot of time to watch a full 30 to 40 plus minute video. However, saying that most T.V. shows are 30 minutes or a full hour and people still watch those. We listen to our viewers, and they love our longer adventures. One comment even said they felt "cheated" when our vid was under 15 minutes!
As for starting the video and letting it run for 60 seconds with our story for every video wouldn't work as google analytics comes into play. Showing the same "segment of us and our story" causes people to click off the video. The trick is to grab them in the first 30 seconds and pull them into your video. We are actively working on this as we are still learning.
We have a lot of information in our back office provided by RUclips that helps us decipher what seems to be working and what isn't. We do dive into that when time permits. All that being said, we also have to be happy with the videos we upload at the end of the day. To this point, they all have a special place in our hearts. Showing our progression as creators, our lives in the back of our trusty steed, incredible sites and the history behind them, and those precious moments we hold dear each day.

The first cabin you went in. I got weird feeling. The chain on the corral. Might have been for the name of the ranch. The house to me was a ranch house. I did hear the sounds of movement and possibly walking.Another Uban Explorer felt the same thing. I can't remember who it was. I tried looking information on the missing Park Ranger at Death Valley. No luck yet. I have been having problem with connection to the internet. The problem with the cell tower. Only now maybe requesting information from You Tube Channels. Like Can -Am 411 Missing and Mysteries ( missing people). I know it exists. But I can't seem to find it.
