The Downfall of Starship Troopers

  • Paul Verhoeven's Starship Troopers was misunderstood upon its release by many, and still often is disregarded as war propaganda to this day. But behind the Fednet news network was a cutting and humorous satire, one which was never replicated in its sequels. Johnny Rico might have returned, and the franchise might have even delved into cutting edge 3d animation, but the same problems have always remained. It's hard to do a sequel to a movie that isn't supposed to revel in its action and gore. It may have been inspired by aliens, and inspired halo, but Starship Troopers is ultimately a critique not a romp! The sequels aren't romps, but not by design...

@@FullFatVideos Overnight everyone was in lock step or they were anti American. The footage from that day played on repeat for a month straight. The next week they opened a recruitment booth in my High school courtyard. Hate crimes were constantly being committed against anyone who looked even vaguely Arab. Nationalism and blind rage, jokes about bombing the middle east into glass, and so many guys I knew couldn’t wait to ship out to Iraq and “Get some!” American flags were everywhere, shirts, hats, car windows, license plates. It wasn’t like that before 9/11. And its never really gone back to normal. Just relaxed a bit.

The biggest reason why the sequels are so different is because they tried to incorporate elements from the book while Verhoeven made the first one as a satire on what he heard the book was about. The Mobile Infantry in the book wearing power armour and having an insane array of weaponry instead of being the lightly armed cannon fodder of the movie is the easiest element to observe. The book created the genre of space marines in power armour and inspired Halo. It was amusing that you pointed out that the armour of the sequels looked like it was inspired by Halo.

They should try making a faithful adaptation of the book. The book is about a militaristic, limited democracy (not exactly a “fascist utopia”) with lots of ideas posited for why their society has been so successful (ex. military service means voters are those who have demonstrated they’re willing to prioritize the group over themselves). It also points out all democracies are limited in some ways, such as age restrictions or sometimes restrictions for convicted felons. The novel isn’t black-and-white, you can engage with the ideas it explores as a thought experiment without having to wholeheartedly agree with it like it’s an earnest advocacy of that government.

  • @kicapanmanis1060
    @kicapanmanis1060 10 месяцев назад +1

Really loved the book, it was really thought provoking to the point where I couldn't even tell what the author' real political views are purely from it alone, whether he was being heavy handed to discourage it or espoused it or somewhere in between. If most people couldn't tell the first movie was satire from how far it went in it, the book would be 10x harder. Cos while the book is heavy handed it does actually create an interesting discussion for it's justifications. Like playing 4D chess where you couldn't tell whether the author believes in or doesnt (and I've seen different interpretations). Its the type that book that presents you with something and makes you think deeply about a topic regardless of what answer you come about with, whether you "agree" with the main character or not. It's a classic for a good reason. I have a strange feeling translating it to the screen will make it lose some of that ambiguity which seems to have happened with those sequels.
And that's just the philosophy and politics, it's also a well written sci-fi book that more of less invented power armor and very good world building for a type of society that's happened in story.

Great video, great movie (the first one, not the rest). Also the only movie that I know of that was censored only through dubbing. The publishers were wary of the tone of the movie when it came to releasing it in Germany, so they actually removed a lot of the fascism in the movie. In the german dub, the bugs actually DO attack first, which we learn when Raszec tells Carmen about the first bug war and how the bugs attacked and destroyed Washington DC, wiped it out. This replaces the hiroshima and sheer force dialog in the original. They also changed it so in the dub, everyone can vote and become a politician, not just those who served. "Service guarantees citizenship" is changed to "Fight for our future", among countless other smaller changes like "welcome to the adventure of the federal service" simply becoming "welcome to the federal service".

I took over the post-production PA job for the last couple of months before HOLLOW MAN's theatrical release (and w/o knowing anybody there, got it purely on the basis of my resume & the interview, tho it didn't hurt the main assistant interviewing me was also from my hometown of Philly lol) After the release window died down, they liked me and decided to shift me to the basic office PA gig as Paul still had a couple years left on his overall deal at Sony. But we literally had to move our set up around the lot like a half dozen times in that span. It was a very small operation, only 6 people, that's including Paul and his British producing partner Alan Marshall, who'd handled all of Paul's American films. They were by far the best bosses I ever had (and nothing really "problematic" to look back on, as is so common anymore). We tried developing several other projects for Paul to possibly do next, including meeting with loads of actors and him even doing a couple general european location scoutings, but nothing coalesced and Sony declined to renew the overhead deal. But VERY much to Paul and Alan's credit, when that happened, they put up their own money for us to go and squeeze out like 3 more months in another independent office to find other options for a movie. Unfortunately that still didn't work out, and our little company dissolved late in summer 2002. HM wound up being the last film that Alan ever produced. And in fact the guy that was Alan's assistant and who interviewed me, I learned a few years ago just by seeing his name in the credits that he's wound up being one of the most regular working editors, things like Silicon Valley and even Marvel. It's just funny in that he never gave me any indication at the time he was interested in editing at all lol (and ironically now pretty much it's the only thing I care about anymore, I even just got paid for editing a video freelance for the first time in my life)

It wasn't a fascist utopia. It was a right wing utopia, and it was awesome. Everyone was allowed to be free and make money and enjoy the fruits of capitalism, you see this in Jonny Rico's parents, who were not citizens. The only people who can vote are those who join the military, or do some service for their country. Heroes, real ones, are honored for their self sacrifice and their actions to protect their society. Everything runs well and is clean and everyone is equal. You see this in the shower scene. All races and both genders are seen as equal as citizens. Justice is done quickly and in public which deters crime and shows the people that there are consequences for bad behavior and that law and order will be kept so that people can flourish safely. You see this in the scene where they televise the execution of a murderer. They try to make this all seem like it's Nazi propaganda but they forget that the Nazis were socialist and the allies of the actual Fascist in Italy. I don't understand how leftists always get this wrong. Fascism is when the government controls business. This is not how it is in starship troopers. Starship troopers is a beautiful vision of how things could be if the people who took responsibility for the protection of their society were the ones in charge, not politicians or business men.

"people who didnt realize its satire" ie people who know history and werent idiots like verhoven and the idiot director. theres so little "fascism" in starship troopers (especially the book) that it looks like the libertarian paradise it is. would you like to know more?
and dougie houser is NOT dressed like a "nazi". the german army used collar litzen long before the nazis and still uses them today. once again this was a misunderstanding of the source material (in this case the german army) by verhoven based on his false assumptions. being somewhat of a nerd concerning uniforms my 1st reaction to the movie was "hhhmmm those look like federal german republic uniforms, i wonder if this was filmed in germany?"
yes verhoven admitted hes an idiot and has no clue what hes talking about. in any case fascism is not right wing. giovani gentile (the creator of fascism) said he envisioned it because "socialism doesnt go far enough". and Mussolini defined fascism as being a left-wing collectivistic ideology in opposition to socialism, liberalism, democracy and individualism.
verhoven misunderstood the source material and let enough of it through that his "fascism" doesnt look fascist at all. fascist societies suppress infor, not invite people to learn more. the leaders in fascist societies do not admit their mistakes and step down. fascist societies have conscription not voluntary service that you not only can leave if you want, but they encourage you to do so.

When you're younger and you watch Starship Troopers it's campy. When you're older it's dark as hell and shows the real dark side of propaganda, governments and war.
You really need to go by the four axis political chart, liberal, conservative, authoritarian and libertarian. Starship Troopers is a funhouse version of the nazi party. Attributing our modern left/right politics to a 1930s authoritarian, racist regime needs to stop. I mean even today the majority of nations can't agree on which is right and which is left anyway.

I think its abit like sniffing your own farts too long when you say everyone must see this one way and the only way its meant to be seen.
And why do the new Disney movies have fanboy defenders? logically they're really bad movies that misuse characters and stories that make no sense but they're loved.
Starship troopers the movie is meant to be a satire but it does a bad job at it, because from what little we see- we don't see an alt right hellscape, we see something America could become and it wouldn't be as bad as all the FAR LEFT hellscapes we've already had on the planet, and there would certainly be room for improvement as all political movements have much room for improvement humanity is fucked and greedy afterall.
Starship troopers is a good bug stomping film and you don't need to notice the subtheme's to enjoy it, the follow up movies just don't capture the same level of fun the first film had.
In trying so hard to be goofy it became entertaining and trying to re-create it with effort just looks too try hard, but i do think another movie following similar kids growing up and coming through the system like the first film could work seeing how the world has changed and maybe push more of the bugs haven't been attacking us.. we've been pushing towards their homeworld, ignore the power armor and all the other movies and work from 10 years from the end of the first.
But having people go into the military to gain rights to vote, i dunno able bodied people should be trained its only in the west you can just opt out unless we are in a time of war- world war and when that happens we'll have a bunch of potatoes who could've had some basic training *shrug* teenage bootcamp then college to teach people they need to have their own opinions and not just follow the chain of command if they disagree with it, but still get that bootcamp into more people!
