I see some of people are confused about the timeline of these movies. You see the 3rd and 4th installments are prequels to the first movies meaning the events took place before the time in which the first two movies are set. It's why Elise is alive in the 3rd and 4th movies even though she died in the 2nd movie. To understand the timeline better perhaps it is best to watch them in chronological order: 3,4,1,2. SPOILERS AHEAD FOR THOSE NOT UP TO DATE TURN BACK NOW. For example if you watch 4 before 1 then you know dalton saw Elise in the attic before falling off the ladder and that she let the red demon in from the further by leaving the door open, where as if you watch the films in release order you assume that what Dalton saw was the red face demon and that this startled him into falling of the ladder, then the real in 4 causes an "oh shit, thats so cool moment" Same goes with watching 3 and 4 before 1 because I number 1 Elise says she has no idea how the Demon found dalton so quickly and through the events of 3 we see it following Ellise so that when she leaves the door open in Number 4 we can assume the demon is not far behind. watching it in chronological order may make the viewer think, Elise has some agenda when she clearly dint know the consequence of her actions. Maybe its just me being a story nerd but I really suggest getting them on DVD so you can take your time and rewind if your struggling with the plot but make sure you watch them in release order so you get the full impact of latter reveals.
