As a psychologist I worked with veterans and the smell of gasoline for gulf war veterans especially is highly triggering in regards to their PTSD. It creates a vivid memory of the oil fields in Kuwait. Our olfactory bulb is near the front of our brain and linked with the amygdala and the hippocampus - both are similar to lockers for memories and emotions. This is why sense of smell will trigger flashbacks at a higher rate than any other sensory input. So she’s likely got a great thesis!

I dont recall any examples of this since my (non- combat related) PTSD diagnosis; I dont believe I'm significantly triggered by smells as a result of my trauma, however recently I got confirmation I'm not just ADHD but autistic as well, & it was a FANTASTIC sense of relief to discover the link between autism triggers & sense of smell. . . & to no longer be embarrassed, dysregulated, ashamed, & super confused when I get sudden, overwhelming irritation, anxiety &/or rage from certain strong odors.
ASD mini- meltdowns are exhausting, stressful, & embarrassing enough already, without also having to wonder what's wrong with me/ my 🧠, that I can be such a highly sensative weirdo .😖 😞
Understanding it's just a quirk of my wiring has really helped me get a handle on my reaction... nevertheless, I'd probably become homicidal if I had to go into Pim Tools compound without a gas mask...
Annndd, NOW- I'm wondering if an insanity defense would be accepted in such circumstances...🤔
(OTOH, a life sentence in prison seems far better than an open ended commitment to a high security hospital for the criminally insane definitely sounds worse, especially not being nominally protected by the judicial process, & subject to appeals & right to counsel.

As he is peddling a lot of nonsense to idiots who are apparently very easy to grift upon, and who either don't understand or don't care for things like nuance, or facts, it means that he himself is not working out his brain very much. Well beyond babbling nonsense and cashing russian cheques. It seems that to be a right wing grifter you only need to be marginally smarter than their target audience. Bear in mind that it's not a contribution to "scientific understanding", that's just a minor point of pendantry I'll harp on. She wrote her thesis for an English PhD. This isn't about science, it's an analysis of English literature, and that title just means "how authors from 1500 AD through today have written about the social implications of smells" which is a pretty bog-standard English thesis, "how have authors dealt with X topic in literature". Not to knock her, to be clear, I bet it's a great thesis, it's just amazing that people are mad about it.

Elaine Scarry's "The Body in Pain: The Making and Unmaking of the World" is an example of a book that was influential and similar. 1. The thing about academia is that a lot of the low-hanging fruit in research has already been done to death, so to come up with original research, you have to choose a topic that's going to seem pretty esoteric to the general public.
    2. That said, analysis of a particular sensory modality in literature, along with its implications, is a fairly well-known topic in literary criticism. This research on olfactory modality seems legitimately consequential, and if he can't understand that, it's Pool's limitation, not the author's.

IMHO the core problem is that conservatives don't want to recognise that anything is complex - that's why they keep insistently going back to "common sense" even though the majority of the time it's "common sense" that doesn't work any more because common sense actually just refers to shortcuts that were good enough back in simpler times. Academics studying the cultural impacts of smell expose complex societal problems and create an obligation to address those problems, systemic oppression requires deep inspection of society and the systems within alongside deep structural change, recognising queer people exist requires an understanding of humans more flexible than boy meets girl that doesn't work in rigid binary frameworks, even climate change requires thinking about the world as a global system instead of just what you can directly see in the moment in your home town. They would rather oppress millions and millions of people and burn the planet than have to think even a tiny bit about the world as a complex place to live in.

As someone who has a sensitive nose, people generally don't smell, well, unless they've been working out, in which case they'll smell like sweat, they've been working in a commercial kitchen, in which case they might smell like a fryer, they've been drinking so they might smell of ethanol, etc. Like as long as people take a bath, whatever smells they have generally go away, and usually the class and housing issues related to smell are related to access to bathing. I believe that was a thing in Parasyte, but I haven't watched it in a while. And to bodily odor, a part of the human population doesn't even have the genetic makeup to have certain body odor (though I can't tell if it's literally BO when this is discussed or what, they're never clear).
The thing that can have a unique and possibly offensive odor would be one's home, and that can latch onto one's clothing, and generally, if not universally, that is what someone is going to smell. There's also people's detergents, their soaps, etc., which could also be considered part of one's home and not intrinsically part of one's body.
And even if someone's body does smell untoward, it doesn't mean it's "because of the food they eat" or its intrinsic to their "race", as Beanie Boy is trying to claim, it's usually a medical or biological issue. Even Body Odor can be a recurring issue that requires the use of something like Hibiclens every once in a while, since regular bathing might not mitigate the bacteria on the arm pit. Obviously the body naturally produces smells, and some can be strong, so if you can't be nice about it, don't say anything at all, since again, there are genuine medical issues that create intense bodily odors.
I specifically remember recently a queer Indian man on twitter showing a grindr discussion with a gay Italian man and how the gay Italian man brought up how "smelly" Indians are, asking how often they bathe, and just generally being racist, using smell as a way to be racist. The idea that somehow people don't use the olfactory sense to be racist or bigoted is ridiculous.

Growing up in a right wing household, the way Tim read this and talked about it took me right back to listening to Rush Limbaugh on the kitchen radio. The tone of his voice was so similar to Rush reading a left wing article. All Tim need to do was loudly shuffle the papers to puctuate his derision.
I'm sure Tim would take this as a compliment. I could really live without a replacement for him though.

Tim Pool sounds like an Always Sunny character when he goes into a semi-posh voice to sound intellectual

Inside Timpool's head there's a childish voice just singing 'Jingle bells, Batman smells', and he's ashamed at his own lack of intellectual curiosity.

Why does Tim have a "I'm reading an article" voice?? The voice/diction he uses when he is doing his article "analysis" is so weird.

I think the discussion by the hosts here is absolutely excellent and should be listened to by all students who want to explain the rise of trump because the same thing is starting to happen here in the UK with the upper class idiot and bigot. Nigel farage

I worked as a Supervisor for a mail processing facility, and one of the processors fainted and blamed her reaction on a body smell from someone feeding her mail to process. No one else could smell it but she was supposedly super sensitive. And this guy happened to be from an African country. Plus it was like 90+ degrees and really humid with very little air circulation. But it was this guy!?!???
