We’ll cover that stuff and even more! So get out your Old Forester 1920 Prohibition Style Straight Bourbon Whiskey, we’re going to unbox the state of Kentucky.
Man this is pretty. This is the bluegrass area in Kentucky - the most well known region in the state. But Kentucky has a lot of really pretty areas in it. River gorges, mountain ranges, prairies and farmland. It’s actually one of the most ecologically diverse states in the region.
Well, actually, I should stop right there. Kentucky isn’t a state. It’s a commonwealth. Let’s get that straight. And there’s a debate as to if Kentucky is a midwestern state or a southern state. Let’s set the record straight on that TOO. Kentucky is a SOUTHERN state pal. There is no doubt about it. But it’s also kinda midwestern. Sorta.
To get a really thorough understanding of the state of Kentucky, and to get to know what each area is like, and where the best and worst parts of the state are, we should look at each various region of this commonwealth.
This is Kentucky. As you can see it’s not ALL hillbillies and rednecks and bible thumpers. Kentucky is way more than just that. In fact, by the end of this video, you’ll probably have your mind changed on how you think about Kentucky. Cause it’s got a lot more goin on that you might have thought.
We’ll begin our tour of Kentucky over here in Eastern Kentucky.

I like seeing places allover the US. Those cities are really nice skylines. Id like to ask you whether gays can live in cities like louisville or Lexington. Is that state a little tolerant or is there no place for the lgbt community?
Please note: Although you may see some people from Indiana, West Virginia and Kentucky proudly wave a Confederate flag - while spewing some nonsense about honoring and/or preserving their heritage - All three of these states FAUGHT FOR THE NORTH!

Scottish person here... for some reason when I think of the States I'm always drawn to Kentucky. The rolling hills are so beautiful. The mountain towns really stand out too. Values and issues seem kind of similar to certain parts of Scotland. Also the bourbon. Great video man.
you can look up the immigration records for Kentucky during the 18th and 19th century. A lot of them came from your neck of the woods and a lot of that bloodline remains unbroken. That might explain why you're drawn to this place.
You would feel at home. The Scottish heritage is strong and people look Scottish. Not just Scottish as English and Irish also occur in large numbers but Kentucky as a whole is strongly Scottish

I am a Scot too and as I was watching this I was thinking that so much of this state reminds me of Scotland!
I read somewhere that these areas were one actually the same. Scotland, Ireland, and the Appalachia area are the same geology wise and were once connected.
I've lived in many states and I can honestly say Kentucky was a bright spot in my geographical visitations. The rolling hills, friendly people, and good food were all pleasant. Overall I enjoyed my few years there. Definitely a misunderstood state.

I moved for just a couple of years to Colorado but I’ve been back for years. I’ll never leave again. I’m close to Corbin. And it’s changed a lot over the years. But we still have the same good people all around. We do have some bad. I I like to think the good out weigh the bad. It’s beautiful anytime of year. ❤️❤️ I’m glad you enjoyed KY.

I'm originally from Detroit, MI but have been in Northern KY for 20 years now and I love it, its a lot slower, its more friendly, its homely, its also a state you can find land to live off grid and grow your own food and etc. Js Kentucky isn't a bad place at all to move to and start living a great life!

I moved here from Detroit to the NE Kentucky about 18 years ago and love it. No way will I ever leave!
I call it Greater Cincinnati/ Northern Ky. Moved here from eastern Ky as a child. Went to school in Kenton county, Ky. Mom and Dad came to give us 5 kids a better life. We worked downtown Cincinnati and retired from our jobs . Working downtown was a great safe place. Very entertaining. People from all walks of life and all races walking around and working together. There were lots of movie stars and local celebrities like Cincinnati Reds to Jerry Springer Nick Clooney,( George's dad) I followed Raquel Welsh down the street! . Beverly Hills Supper Club brought alot of people in the entertainment industry. Durung lunch time Fountain Square was a gathering place. Lots of shopping and nice restaurants all around town. We worked at careers with Proctor and Gamble, Duke Electric , AT&T, Cincinnati Bell , IRS etc.
I’m from KY and I can say you did very well, I’m glad someone is willing to put a lot of the stereotypes to bed. This state truly has more to offer than many believe.
I'm hoping nobody starts to realize that... those stereotypes are keeping the people who made California what it is out of Kentucky.

As a life-long Kentuckian, from Bowling Green, I am thankful to say that I am a Kentuckian! No place I would rather live. If you like bourbon, horse racing, blue grass music, country cooking, sweet tea, college basketball, fishing and hunting, four distinct seasons, I can't think of a better place.
Don't forget Corvettes! You're from Bowling Green for crying out loud.
@@zackmeuth Heh, Corvettes are o.k. You can still be a native Kentuckian and not be a fan of Corvettes. Sweet tea and gravy n biscuits are much more important.

@@zackmeuth the new corvettes are a thing of beauty. I see them out and about near my neighborhood (Lexington) and just love them. Seeing some Toyota Supra’s popping up as well.

You state is horrible poverty, lack of jobs, adults, and much worse, children with no hope, no education, and no future. I've been in city slums that were better than large areas of Kentucky.
One of the best moves I've ever made. Not just Kentucky , but in the heart of it. Got a job, place to live, and there is no where the amount of violence here as where I lived before. Thank you Kentucky.

Grew up in Oregon and now I've been in Louisville for about 5 years, before moving here admittedly had a lot of negative misconceptions about Kentucky. Basically thought that it was poor and under educated. My time in Louisville really beat a lot of that pretentious Northwest attitude out of me Kentucky has mostly been a great place to live and most folks have been very welcoming!

I'm a Kentucky girl, been around the world---10 different countries, living in Italy and several different states in the US, Army brat turned soldier and I can say I have longed to return home. Shelby Foote, in his masterpiece: The Civil War, shows in no uncertain terms that KY is a Southern State, and how its fortunes fared in that terrible conflict.
Eastern Kentuckian here! Very nice video. We live in an incredibly beautiful state that is often misrepresented. We definitely have lots of areas to improve on, but I couldn't imagine calling anywhere else home.

Shockingly accurate description of the state. I have lived in Western Kentucky my entire 63 years and retired as a state trooper and lawyer. I know my way around pretty well and I think you did an outstanding job breaking down the different areas. Basketball is serious business and you are either blue ( UK )or red ( U of L ). It seems like everyone hates Duke. 🙂

@@josephb9597 I wouldn’t really live north of 6th street until you get past New Circle, Georgetown road inside New Circle, or near Woodhill or Mt. Tabor. That saying, those areas are pretty small compared to where I would/have live!
AVOID Nicholasville road at all costs - it’s not a bad area of town, in fact it’s pretty well off, but the traffic is terrible! Good neighborhoods though (Landsdowne, Zandale). Anywhere near Fayette mall is nice, but the traffic is awful!
If you like suburbs, Hamburg is popular and there are a lot of new houses there. Generally the further south you get, the nicer and newer everything is (near Palomar center, Beaumont center, etc.). The wealthiest area of the city proper (not counting newer suburbs), is near Ashland/Chevy Chase/Lakewood. These neighborhoods are historic areas with the best parks and schools, but can be pricey. Gratz park and west 2nd and 3rd are also high end historic areas - but basically unaffordable unless you’ve owned the place for 50 years.
If you’re younger, living near campus or downtown would be ideal.
When I was 16 - 17 I spent all my freetime visiting every county in Kentucky! I finished October of 2020! It's a beautiful and diverse state, there are so many hidden gems. My favorite county is Boone or Wayne County!

I visited KY from Arizona and I feel that KY is very underrated state. I really enjoyed Lexington and I feel that it is really a nice place.

We got to live in Lexington, KY for four years and LOVED it! People in general don't understand the international flavor in Lexington. Because the of the University of Kentucky healthcare system, people come from all over the world to train for healthcare. Its a wonderful city, but the traffic is atrocious. The outlying land is beautiful. You are right--the people are so friendly! I miss it!

So delighted to hear you mention London! That’s my family’s “big city” to their tiny town. Beautiful, diverse place with lots of kind people- many Black sharecroppers made Eastern KY their home in the early 1900 to work in the mines after a boil weavels “plague” destroyed crops in GA and Alabama

My Mom's family are from Barboursville Ky. Some are still there. My cousin owned Apple Acres bed and breakfast in "Barvul" as we called it. Aunt Maxie owned a dress shop years ago. One aunt taught school and Knox Central HS. We had reunions at the littlest house in Ky park.. I'm a transplant in greater Cincinnati area. Thats where my work named me TUCKY and it stuck! Lol Remembering traveling South on route 25 BEFORE I 75 EXISTED! All day and arriving early morning the next day. Ky has alot of places to visit . Ky Horse Park Mammoth Cave, My Old Ky Home, Church Hill Downs etc. I'd consider moving back now that I'm retired.Think I'd like a slower paced life style today. I miss the Appalachian mountains and moonshine too!

In south east KY at the Red River Gorge there is also one of the most well known rock climbing areas in all of the US. Northern Lexington is starting to become gentrified as more young middle class people seek more affordable homes and outside developers to bring in more amenities such as craft breweries and kombucha shops. And to finish your song you set it up perfectly for a saying we like around here "Kentucky you race horses and they run so fast.There's only one thing left to say, Kentucky Kicks Ass!"

This is so awesome Nick, don't know how you packed so much cool, useful and honest information into 20 minutes but you sure did ... With a sense of humor and heart of an adventurer ! Kentucky born and well travelled here, you hit a lot of nails on the head. Love Daniel Boone National Forest, Red River Gorge area, Bourbon tours, unique places like Shakertown, to name a few. Many friendly, hard working, independent-thinking and appreciative folks in the Commonwealth. You know as someone pretty much raised in Kentucky - around the Lexington area - I really appreciate this video. It strangely enough gave me a fresh appreciation for the place despite it's problems. It's poor in places but it's also quiet and beautiful in others. I sometimes forget how beautiful the mountains look here so it's refreshing to see them again. For that - thank you.

Born and raised in central Kentucky. I couldn't care less about horses. I really don't care about UK basketball. I love this state, and I think it's a great place to live. All the stereotypes aggravate me because most of them are false. Nice job on my home state Nick! 👍😀

Same here! Was stationed at Ft. Knox from 1993-1995 when I ETSd and am still here living in Radcliff. Came here on a compassionate reassignment from HQ MTMC-Europe in Rotterdam, Netherlands when my husband became seriously ill. Wasn't too thrilled at first but over the years, it grew on me.
I have lived in Tennessee and Kentucky is a very nice state when I go through there to get to Ohio. Love visiting some of my family there and friends.

Been here in Kentucky for two years now. Moved from California. The freedom here is great, nobody tells us how to live. Am east of Lexington and yes it is a depressed economic area and everybody goes nuts for University of Kentucky sports.
I live in Kentucky and this seems about right. A lot of places are still strange to me but the bluegrass is accurate. That’s where I live

Lowell, Mass. has a quilting museum, well worth seeing. It was good to hear about quilts in Kentucky.

I lived in AZ for 9 years. Tucson. We moved back to KY in 2010.
I grew up in Louisville, and before moving to Central KY (Georgetown) around middle age, I never witnessed the pink fields in springtime from the blooming of henbit and deadnettle mint. It's absolutely gorgeous. Kentucky is truly a diverse and beautiful state, once you get to know it (and I've lived in several other beautiful states: CT, NC, and CO).
Brilliant job!! I lived in eddyville Ky all my life until recently I moved to uniontown Ky and I think you did a fantastic job describing our state! It was very respectful and hilarious!! My husband and I love watching your unboxing videos! Can’t wait for more!

Funny you should say that when those from Ireland came to KY it reminded them of Ireland. A few years ago I was in Ireland and said to my wife, this looks just like KY except here they have fences made of stone and in KY we have fences made of wood.
Kentuckian here. Lived in Eastern KY for most of my life. Carter County, Greenup. My Mamaw and Papaw lived in a little place called Denton. Living in Lexington now. It's a beautiful state and I couldn't imagine being anywhere else. I've wondered to bigger places but Kentuxky has always called me back home. Great job on the video.
I believe Elizabethtown was named 5th safest city in the country. Proud Hardin county resident.
Northern Kentuckian here although i live in the southern end of it where it is more rural than shown in this video. I have traveled all over Ky and i love our state (commonwealth) I also have worked for the state for 23 years.

I’d say this video is spot on from my 40 years in Kentucky. My first 20 years was spent in the coal towns of eastern Ky. And then the last 20 has spent working for the USA’s largest Toyota plants in Georgetown. And from my experience I’d say this videos sums it up really well.
I’d like to add 3 things that a Kentuckian should be proud of.
Corvettes, bourbon, and Louisville/UK sports.
Was ready to come in and pick apart your video but I was glad how accurate it was and your map was on point. I found myself laughing at the jokes to. Good video.
It's culturally a Southern state, but it was actually neutral in the Civil War.
It's really a little of both. Both southern and midwestern based businesses have a presence in Kentucky.

KY along with MO and MD were slave states that chose to officially stay in the Union rather than secede and join the Confederacy. Like MO and MD, some people in KY chose to support and fight for the Confederacy while others chose to support and fight for the Union. Obviously not leaving the Union proved to be a wise decision as the border states were able to avoid the drama of Reconstruction following the Civil War.
Kentucky stayed neutral during the civil war and they chose to hold on to their southern roots and identity. 💯
There is a strong Midwestern influence, especially in the Owensboro-Henderson area, where I'm from.
Wow man you did a really good job of describing KY. It seems like you grew up here lol. KY isn’t for everyone for sure and there is a lot that can be changed to better the state, but it’s nice to see someone take an objective view of KY for once.

I have traveled in 22 states in USA and lived in 7 states including different climates, terrains, atmospheres and cultures including rural, farmlands orchards and vineyards, hills and mountains areas, and near and alongside the coastline and ocean areas and in the suburbs and in cities. Kentucky is one of my favorite places to live and visit especially Lexington and the surrounding areas. 🤗👏💐🍷🥖🙏👑🏡🌅💃🏽🐴

Corbin, Kentucky here. I've lived in several states but so far none have beat out this area for low cost of living, friendly people, great food, etc. And yes, we love the Kentucky Wildcats!!

I live in kentucky and dont let anyone fool you. Unless you live in Louisville the only thing you can do is go to the mall or in a smaller town go to the local walmart. It's boring here. It always has been. Most people that were born and raised here want to move, but for some reason can't escape the trap that is kentucky. A general rule is you don't go out at night or you'll get shot. At least in Lexington that's how it is. And there are quite a few places you don't go in the day time.
I’ve watched him drag a dozen states in these videos but has almost nothing but praise for Kentucky… seems it has a special place in his heart
My parents moved from California to Kentucky last year. They absolutely love it

My grandmother moved from southeastern Kentucky as a teenager in the 1920s. I visited Kentucky a lot as a kid. Always had fun there
