  • This descriptive statistics video tutorial explains how to find the interquartile range and any potential outliers in the data. You need to calculate the first and third quartiles in order to calculate the IQR. Q1 is the median of the lower half of the data and Q3 is the median of the upper half of the data.

Some very clear examples of calculating Lower and Upper Quartiles. The Quartile calculation is one of the most confusing and ambiguous in mathematics. There is more than one formula used for calculating Q1 and Q3 and they give slightly different answers.

I have followed the same method in an exam, but my answers was wrong.
When I go through some research I found some formula like Q1=(n+1)/4 th term, Q2=(n+1)/4 the term, Q3=3/4*(n+1) th term. In this case the answers were different.
When I started calculating using this formulas, for above 2 example in this video for Q1 i got Q1=3.25 th term. 3.25 th term means do i have to take average of 3rd and 4th terms or do i have to do interpolation. Which method is right?
