Formula for working out number of days to ride the trip:
Take your total mileage of your trip, divide it by an estimate of how far you want to ride each day, to give you a guide on how long it will take you to just ride that distance - let’s call that A.
Then divide (A) by 3 (or however many days you want to ride inbetween stop overs) and whatever the answer is - let’s call that B, just add A + B together to = C (the total time to travel that section, allowing for time off the bike to sightsee and do stuff)
Total Mileage/daily mileage limit = A
A/3 = B
A+B = C

A HUGE thank you to the folks over at www.BEARDSPUNK.com for keeping me in stock of their awesome beard washes and oils.

I might add to the cost:
1) Bribes at borders
2) Replacement parts bike contingency if/when the machine is dropped
3) Some medical contingency money which might not be immediately covered by travel insurance
4) Emergency cash reserve that can be transferred to a local bank/courier (Amex is good for this)
Excellent video btw
Thanks for this. Traveling the world has been one of my dreams. And by motorcycle?! A dream come true.
I flew with my bike on the same plane from Heathrow to Montreal via Air Canada for £1200 (me and bike) in 2015. If you take normal sea freight at £650-£700 +£150 hidden charges plus say £350 economy to USA it comes to the same. If you are a shipping virgin DO NOT be fooled by advertised shipping prices. If you add the extra travelling costs by taxi to remote ports and all over the town and back to Customs and hours of paperwork then add Port Charges, blah, blah, blah, it all adds up. And what happens if the ship does not unload for a day or even a week? More hotel charges! (been there got that T shirt). BTW don't forget the cost of renting a van and dropping it off at Southampton or Liverpool too!
In contrast, flying with your bike via Air Canada you are literally riding your bike within 1 hour of landing as they do not strip them down and you are allowed 1/4 tank of fuel. USA Customs take 3 hours and body search you coming into the office for weapons and treat you like a terrorist. Canadian Customs take 3 minutes with a cheery smile. No competition! Next day ride over the USA border and don't mention your British bike, they won't ask. They don't care about drive-overs anyway, only shipped vehicles. Get an EPA certificate (Emissions exemption) online at least a month ahead though in case the Police ask for it.
Top advice there bud 😉👍
Truthful
Yes, Air Canada figured out this untapped market! Quite a few Americans from the Western USA will drive to Vancouver British Columbia to load their bikes out to worldwide destinations with Air Canada as opposed to American options. Hope AC can survive the pandemic...I've yet to get my Africa Twin to Europe.....
@@seansteede have a look at richie vida when they shipped out to canada for their usa trip another good watch
@@ollydogtravels9465 Tks and will do!
Great vid. You’ve done it all: how to plan; worked the plan; measured your results; and continuously improved. Many will balk at the cost, but putting away funds for such a trip is a good practice to learn. Saving pays off in many ways, a trip, that guitar, retirement. Don’t give up on the dream, start paying it off now. Great job!
dude. this was a complete eye opener! i've been interested in this for a while with little research but you brought it home. THANK YOU

great vid! a great way to bring a proper honest review to the money side of things and personally, a great smack in the back of the head to reality, i wouldn't be able to do this anytime soon, but is definitely a goal of mine. Looks like ill just have to settle on the south to north of Vietnam road trip for the 30th first :)

Stumbled across your video and I found it to be fantastic. Do not think I will ever travel the world but with the web sites and other information. I can use what I learned here from you for North American travels I am hoping
Cool vid man!
Hi Bruce. It's really tough finding info about budgeting for trips like this. Almost like it's a "dirty" topic. Awesome vid, really gets you thinking about all those "little" things. Cheers.
Thanks Jacob, glad you’ve found it useful, treat it as a guide, not gospel. It’s certainly possible to travel for a lot less, same as it’s also possible to travel for a lot more. 👍
Excellent video. Very realistic view from my experience. Time for another trip 😄
Thanks Derek 👍
Awesome video! It’s a fanciful idea for me to travel around the world but you’ve put real numbers to it, should the time ever come for me to take the chance. Thanks! There was loads that would not have crossed my mind that you brought out
Cheers Lance, I hope you one day get to live your dream bud 👍
very informative mate thank you
No worries bud, glad it was of some help to you 👍
Hey Bruce, loving the new series. Your production on the videos is also getting better with each vid it that it was bad to begin with! Enjoy Christmas, I will buy one of your dvd when I can. Looking forward to it.
Thanks bud, greatly appreciated 👍
Most Excellent my brother...
Thanks Mark 🙏👍
Very good video. Thanks.
Blimey! That's way more than I thought and with my budgeting and maths skills I'd be back in a week. Probably not get through France. Great informal but informative vlog mate, take care.
Ta Hepcat, it’s only a guide mate you can do a RTW trip on a lot less if you’re very canny and are prepared to camp wild and really watch what, when and where you eat etc.
nice one big man 😉 I am planning a trip bournemouth/ Portsmouth ferry to santander then coastal ride all coast road ride down to Gib then chill a few days then the quick way back home via Madrid ETC etc .
Wow Steve, that’ll be a fantastic trip, very jealous. Enjoy it bud 👍
Thanks for sharing.. nice vlog 👍
No problem Nur, glad you enjoyed it 👍
Great editing. Really like how you were in motion.
Thanks Minihjalte, I need to invest in a stabiliser though as I suffer from very shaky hands! 👍
Subbed. Vid popped up while cleaning my bike. Awesome. Time to ride!! (To work.. aaargh)
I’m saving like mad Bruce, my lovely lady has given me the green light too lol. Great video mate, very down to earth and professional Kindest regards Beans.
Awesome Beans, go for it 👍
Great video! Smart advice too. I got amoebiasis in Venezuela and a friend of mine got dengue. That's something people usually don't think about, but you may even need a hospital stay if you don't plan well
Aye I got Dengue too, horrible thing!
Just part of life on the road though I suppose 👍
Incredibly informative! I appreciate this vid hilights the cheaper quicker way to do it, surprisingly this doesn’t shatter any dreams, in fact it’s the opposite. What a bargain to see the world on such a budget! You could run tours doing this and people would pay £50k to tag along
Very happy I’ve discovered this channel. I’m only 20 but a huge fan of bikes, one of my dreams is to travel the world by bike! Thanks!
Great stuff, glad you’re enjoying the channel and thanks for dropping me a line. Make sure you live your dreams and Live Your Life 👍

Thanks Moto Rider, glad you’re enjoying the channel bud 👍
Just like Martin lewis would explain it. Easy if you know how.
Joking aside, Great insight and on a subject that no-one usually covers. Nice one Bruce.
Thanks bud, Ha, yeah it’s easy if you’ve done it before eh! 😉👍
Great info Bruce, that figure you came up is in the ball park of my calculation, roughly about what it cost me to live at home for a similar period.
I work as a motorcycle courier and do around 50,000 Klms a year down here in the colony of OZ using a DR650 and it cost me between 6.5-7 thousand dollars a year to keep the bike on the road and as you know OZ is not a cheap place to live and may I add I am Scottish by birth and suffer from the old syndrome of short arms and deep pockets.
I am a new subscriber and enjoying the channel very much, loved the around the world vid's a lot, loved the tour around Scotland series also, finally after 45 years of living in OZ I got to do a trip back to the old country and did that loop in reverse on a Bike 4 1/2 years ago and loved every bit of it.
Keep up the good work. 👍👍👍
Always love it when a Scot talks in the "posh" accent so the heathens understand them. 😂😂😂
Ha Ha, is my ‘phone voice’ that obvious?! Maybe I should do a vid in my natural ‘Rab C Nesbitt’ dialogue??? 🤔
Great to hear you’re enjoying the channel mate and I’m glad the vid has been of some use. It’s not Gospel, just a guide obviously, but hopefully helps some folk out.
All the best for your travels 👍
teapotone my mum does the same phone voice thing, her accent still throws me at times, the Fife accent is a little strong at times. 😄😄
Thanks a lot for all the info because of videos like urs I’m planning my around the word overland much better at the beginning I though of it as a easy trip but it’s really not
Thank you so much. I'm about to travel the contiguous US on a bike this summer and I was kind of lost. Thank you so much!
No bother Taz, hope you have a great time 👍
teapotone I will definitely try! I plan to be camping for most of it :) Cheers mate
Never knew Gimli is also motorcycle guy! Awesome channel, thumbs up
Ha Ha, thanks and glad you like it 👍
THANKS MY friend for the video, it is very cool!!
Cheers Harley 👍
I will continue viewing you videos, I too want to travel de world! YOu choose a sports bike, why? only one other person had done this (a guy on a R1 from Europe) it is by design not the "ideal bike" but I do not care about ideal, I want to do it on my scooter or my 150 cc DP bike, why? because it is what I have or could buy and still have money for the trip
Any bike will take you around the world, just take whatever bike makes you smile
Smashed that like button!
Tremduss!! Cheers Dirty, top man 👍
valuable information brother
Thanks bud, glad you found it useful 👍
I'll do it one day definitely! 👍
To be honest mate thats less than i expected, especially after watching your trip. The maths lesson was great and gives a newbie like me a way to work out what its gonna cost for trips this year. Seen your Pico adventures, fancy some of that.
Hello chaps, great to hear you found the vid useful 👍
Aye the Pico’s are the best road biking roads anywhere in the world in my opinion, loads of fun.
Stay safe
You’ve gained a sub man
Thanks Sandory 👍
Sod that I'd be happy just doing Europe, Or even the lake district for a pie and a pint and back in time for tea! 😁
LOL I can just about afford to get to the beach and get a bag of chips ;)
Brilliant vid - straight talking. I recently failed completely during a trip to France. My riding buddy (who is no longer a buddy of any type!) tried to do everything on the cheap and it ended up being more expensive!!! Penny wise, pound foolish as my old man used to say. Anyway, the figure you gave was a bit less than I thought it would be - I reckoned on 30K, but that was just a wild guess. I have no intention to ride around the world in one hit but wish to try getting as far as I can overland without any eye watering shipping costs. I am going to try Spain next year and will probably go East in 2020 but you have given me great food for thought - thanks again!
Cheers Donny, glad the vid has helped in some way.
Budget is a very personal thing though, so you’ll know yourself what you can live on and what loving standard you’re happy with on the road.
Enjoy your travels bud 👍
Brilliant 👍
Thanks for this, although I don't plan on a round the world trip it is interesting to see the math as it is relevant to shorter tours too. :-)
Absolutely Hippo, exactly the same for pretty much any trip really, just a bigger scale. 👍
Yes i couldnt agree less but still shocked about the total cost. Motorbiking in my country would be a bit more cheaper i guess
Superb! I had two short trips around Europe and I am hoping to do it again (Suzuki GSX-R 600 Srad)
Great video, my dream is to ride London to Bangkok one day and I can't wait til it becomes a reality!
Awesome 👍

Cracking video, honest & informative as ever👍 Following your RTW trip do you have any idea of the total costs associated to just the bike ie. the services, tyres, all the running repairs you had carried out etc. Just curious really Bruce!
Brilliant ( lol ) enough to be thinking about Appreciated Atb. Roach
Grabbed it!
Yeah these types of trips i think one should always consider doing it at some point in his life, i mean after a trip like this you can honestly say that you seen the world. Because when flying by plane to certain locations you basically miss 95% of it.
