  • A former Michigan State Police detective sergeant who is facing charges for hitting and killing a man with an unmarked cruiser during a foot chase in Kentwood appeared in court Wednesday. (June 5, 2024)

    Law enforcement’s relationship with the public has degraded because we see what they get away with now. We see the horrible crimes that cops never face accountability for.

      Yeah, it’s never the fault or responsibility of the person breaking the law, it’s the fault of the police officer who is put in that situation because of the choice the suspect made. The police should have just let him do what he wanted and not do their job. I just don’t get what makes them think they can just do their job as law enforcement officers whenever they are on shift. Who gave them that idea. The people?

    I can tell that guy the difference this cop intentionally struck a man pinning him to a wall whereas the person on the highway probably unintentionally struck and killed his kid. Intentionality matters people. You cant intentionally kill someone who isn't presenting a threat of great bodily injury or death to you or others.

      @@DrDolittle744 He was charged with 2 counts. First count was Homicide:Murder, 2nd Degree. Second count was Manslaughter, Involuntary. I don't know the intricacies of Michigan criminal law but I listened to the actual court recording and that's what the judge read out.

    The difference between one person being charged with a misdemeanor for hitting and killing someone, and this cop being charged with murder is because one was an accident, the other was not. The cop disnt lose control, the vehicle did not malfunction. He aimed for the kid, and killed him.

    All those people must have saw a different video, I am quite sure if it was their child they would be singing a different tune,. Hitting a human with your car what was he thinking. Was allowed to retire. Go after his retirement.

    The supporters are only looking at their friend, not the totality of circumstances. Especially his fellow officers, if they actually knew the law they would understand why he is being charged. Any reasonable officer would not have used that type of force to stop a running suspect in that manner. The law is the law, open a book and read the Graham Factors.

    His job was to bring in the suspect in, not to deny the public justice. He only added to any injustices he was supposed to be working to preventing or bringing before the judgement of the court.

    To think ramming a human body with a 3000 lb car against a brick wall is just doing his job is stunning. This fool said he he was over charge for crushing this kid against a wall for a misdemeanor in fraction is appalling. That cop closed to be judge, jury and executioner.

    Not charging the cop would mean they can shoot you in the back if you resist , turn away , ride a bike , skate or jog away ... Even if the reason is your scared , don’t comprehend or understand , you’re having a medical issue or are deaf.

    I think it should have been first degree. He had ample time to change his mind put on the brakes or even turn the steering wheel. He didn't he went full steam ahead. And literally focused and aimed his car which is a deadly weapon at that person

    His name was Samuel Sterling. I don't know why he was running but if he committed a crime he could have been arrested and had due processes we are all entitled to. I thought cops are supposed to understand the rules. Citizens are expected to know the rules, why aren't cops?

      @@patriciaraymond7839 What difference does any of that make? He knew he had felony warrants out for his arrest. If he had wanted to clear those up he would have gone down to the court to explain - clearly had more pressing matters. He just needed more time to get to it. His previous arrests for being a convicted felon carrying a concealed weapon were in the past, so that’s no excuse, he even told them he wasn’t armed but apparently they didn’t listen.

    First I'd like to say I absolutely detest this AG lady that brought up these charges.,which I consider worthless to the real world we live in. and that being said, Charging him with murder is a over the top of common reason. There's many mitigating circumstances at play here and lets not forget the MSP were the Good guys chasing the bad guys so in that context this man died due to HIS poor CRIMINAL choices. I think it's a travesty of justice to go after the good guys when one of the bad guys dies. THEY know the rules of the street; "Play with fire there's always a chance you'll get burned" He did and I say Oh well....shouldn't have lived the hood life. Lets also consider all the fine things this fine felon would go on to do later had he lived.
