Alan Menken has written many, many, many wonderful songs with many different lyricists, but Howard Ashman is his greatest and most natural collaboration. Ashman’s lyrics, like Irving Berlin, breathe with such natural freshness. Deceptively simple, never pretentious or overtly clever (like Tim Rice’s “Hold your breath it gets better/Every moment red letter” in A Whole New World). Menken’s music, like Berlin, drives Ashman’s words with that exact amount of natural flair. Together, Menken and Ashman were phenomenal, from Little Shop of Horrors to Little Mermaid to Beauty and the Beast to Aladdin. Ashman’s death at the peak of his success is such a tremendous loss to the world of musicals. Brilliant writer and collaborator.
The creators made Genie with Robin Williams specifically in mind to play him, even before approaching him for the role. Nobody else can play him because the character basically IS Robin Williams.
