St Peter's church is Northampton is a closed church, though maintained as a heritage asset with occasional open days. It closed for worship in 1995 and was vested in Chuches Conservation Trust (CCT) in 1998. The CCT is a predominantly volunteer based organisation and specifcally at St Peter's, the CCT is developing the Old Black Lion pub across from the church. The pub closed in 2018 and has medieval origins of some description. The CCT is leading a regeneration project focused around the pub (they've never - to my knowledge - taken on a pub before) to reopen it as a pub again. It should be interesting - they've receieved loads of funding for it and planning permission to restore the building. Hopefully it will mean the church is open more often. Great video! I was introduced to Alan Moore's writing through Swamp Thing for DC comics a long time ago and never looked back. A conversation between Ian Sinclair and Alan Moore, let alone having two great minds in the same room, must surely have caused a rupture in the fabric of space-time itself.
For those who wonder what the fuss is about: Iain Sinclair is 81 years old and is kind of like the late Bucky Fuller, he knew a lot of people that would be considered important in retrospect, in addition to his own important work. The same is true for Alan Moore. Thanks so much for the upload.
I moved out of London 10 years ago, and I watch your walks to remind me of old days. Now you are walking around my new home of Northampton! I love it here, loads of history, down to earth people
Thanks for this, John. I live in Market Harborough but rarely stray into Northampton as it doesn't have the finest reputation in these parts. Must revisit with a new mindset.
How sad that John Clare is so little known . Beautiful poems in the midst of suffering . Son of a farm labourer he was never far from poverty. He deserves a decent biopic .✌️
Toby Jones played him in by ourselves.... it captures Clares insanity, and his delusions. It'd be interesting they did a traditional bio... like the Turner or Lowry films.... I also always find it criminal that William Blake diddnt get the film treatment instead of the incredibly dull and tedious Turner film. I have a interest I Clare as I live near Helpston... his cottage is well worth a visit...
@@mikethebloodthirsty It would have been good if Richard Attenborough had lived as long and as actively as his brother and done a series of films on people like Blake and Clare . You used to get access to the church via the Black Lion pub. Years ago, whilst working for the Borough Council Electrical Dep’t, we had to switch the exterior floodlights on / off (via a time clock) over the Easter and Christmas periods from inside the church. The council would pay for the energy over these periods. It is a stunning church.
I've lived in Northampton all my life (47 years), I'm a thoroughbred Norfamtonian and I still love the town, even though it has gone down hill over the last 15 years. Our home town is draped in so much history. I grew up mainly in a little village called Piddington (again plenty of history there too). Some of the old building in town are absolutely gorgeous, some great architecture! There is also some fantastic old buildings in and around the county.
Great video thanks for uploading it to learn new things about my hometown. I was born in Far Cotton. Everytime I go into town I'm drawn towards All saints by sitting inside the church for a while because it’s so peaceful inside without the town noise. Gets a bit boring after a while though.
So great to see Alan Moore, and Ian does a grand job of the interview. I've not visited Northampton and the sense of the place really does come through your magick camera there John! Of course Alan's right, it's when you get a bit of history that the multiple layers of a place begin to reveal themselves. Very nice film! Thank you John, Alan and Ian. 🌟👍
Thank you for another fascinating video, John. That one brought back a lot of fond memories for me. I lived in Northampton for a few years during the '90s. Being both a comic artist, myself, and a semi-regular at one of Alan's favourite pubs, I got to know him quite well. I spent many a long evening in one curry house or another, or in the very same room you filmed in, enjoying long chats about all kinds of fascinating topics. Alan was always extremely generous with his time and also a wonderful conversationalist. It's rather fun to see that his sitting room appears to have barely changed at-all in the intervening decades. :)
Somewhere on the BBC's iPlayer there's a three part 1972 series by the great architecture critic Ian Nairn, "Nairn Across Britain". The first episode includes a visit to Northampton ("A rather drab, south midlands town") with a passionate defence of the Market Square and the Emporium Arcade, both of which were then under threat of redevelopment (Spoilers: They were). The whole series is a delight - probably on RUclips as well.
The old tunnels connecting important buildings under the town are fascinating to try and research … They go from the Black Lion all the way down the way you walked to the buildings opposite the Guildhall… not sure where else from there… a few of the buildings you can go into the cellars and see where they are blocked off ❤
Thank you, John, Iain and Alan. What a wonderfully absorbing film and conversation: elemental and flavoured with some kind of subtle magick. A visit to Northampton is definitely required.
The more I watch your videos, especially when you feature guests like Iain or Alan, the more I connect with the mysticism of Britain. I've recently been reading The Once and Future King, a series of books by T H. White about the Athurian legends. It's fascinating to think of our very recent history in these same mythical terms.
As Eliot wrote, '...all time is eternally present'. Thank you for an extremely interesting video and for encouraging me to revisit Northampton and discover some of its living sub-strata.
I was born in 1956 on The Spencer Estate in Northampton, and met Alan Moore a few times. I have a passion for history. Northampton has a very interesting history and has beautiful architecture. The county is on par with The Cotswolds---Good video.
This video is a treasure. There’s so much wisdom imbedded in each sentence in this conversation, that watching it just once is virtually impossible. Thanks so much for this John.
Its so good how you and your friends show how ordinary places are all extraordinary really. Everywhere is. I know nothing about Northampton but I know just one of my ancestors lived there but I know nothing about him but his name and trade. Thomas Woodford of Northampton, rope maker in the mid 1700s. The peoms of John Clare are beautiful. I once heard on the radio I think,a long piece by John Clare describing how unsettling he and no doubt many others found The Enclosures. Not being able to walk over ground and along streams and in woodland where once they could roam freely on possible pain of death, well it was as physically and mentally painful as life today where all our certainties are being cast away.
Uprooted by Nina Lyon is an amazing book about the green man. The name ‘The Green Man’ was actually coined in the 1940s. The original name and meaning is lost in the depths of time. The kind of people who worshipped trees. Like Yew trees, which are found outside in many churches.
Oh I do so enjoy these films of yours, John. They are peaceful and full of curiosity at the same time. Perfect for relaxing the body whilst stimulating the mind. Nice to hear your music too.

The area between Northampton and Newport Pagnell was the Norman kings of England private hunting ground, it is where they disposed of their enemies without trial... Many came to Northampton and were executed on the king's land which were outside of the laws of England. In terms of the Norman domination of the English, Northampton was an important stronghold for Norman domination and be for that it was a Viking stronghold of the Danelaw with the border of the Danelaw and Saxon England being the river at Newport Pagnell stretching around to Buckingham. Having the king invite you to hunt with him in Northampton was the last act for many English noblemen.
