You know what's funny? I'm from Europe and I found out about this story from Phil DeFranco. And after 1 min into the song I knew what he was talking about. How he told 2 stories with a couple of lines.
If anyone says that Em isn't a genius or that he doesn't belong in the rap world or that he is ruininng it.
This song is a masterpiece and it saddnes me to see some of the comments under the original music video about how ''this is just one of the ways, how they want to take the guns away.''
Completely dissregarding the message or the craftmanship and work that went into writing this.
Em is the G.O.A.T and anyone that says he isn't or doesn't belong in the rap world or is ruining hip-hop is just.. Stupid.

He wasn't bashing legal gun owners in any way. He was saying "but I'm a registered owner, no prior convictions " to say, but that doesn't always mean that person should have a gun
Just because you can doesn't mean you should. He's trying to say it's not always about "inner cities" and illegal glocks, sometimes it's that guy who got his gun legally, who has shown no signs of mental illness because he's held it all in. It's not always so simple to tell who's capable of what. So no he's not ignorant, he's actually paying attention.

That second verse gets me. I mean he talks about how insecure he is before his shows after losing a chunk of his fan base (he stresses about selling out venues). But it is also the psychology of that mass shooter at the same time. I'd say, conceptually, it is his best since Stan. A pure stroke of genius.

      Mic Vensa
Yeah, you have to see the juxtaposition in context, he's talking about the worst possible outcome for him at the time and then references the fact that it's only the opening act.
If he just waits he sees that his fears about the opening act are unfounded and he doesn't need to take the drastic action of ending the show.(life)
This track has more layers than an Ogre.

People talk about the gun issue but forget that 2/3rds of all gun deaths are by suicide and by men in the USA. It's gotten worse with social media, but the feeling of alienation, disenfranchisement, and feeling a burden/failure for men is quite profound. The most vulnerable are been the ages of 13 to 27 where you see the numbers on a chart rising, then by 30 to 50, the numbers level out. After 50 to 80, the suicide rate exponentially increases year by year. Part of the problem is men really don't have good support systems, and not great at expressing their feelings. Rightfully so because most have been stomped on when they try to open up. Stuff like "Be a man!", or other nonsense like that. This is also different from how women commit suicide. Women will choose forms of suicide that allow for rescue. They will broadcast what they are planning. They don't want to die. they want to feel like some cares. Men on the other hand, think about it for a long time. They will act all positive even days before they kill themselves. They will give away their stuff. Take care of any business. Then choose a method the ensures death. They may send out a message or leave a note before doing it, but when they get to that stage, they have their minds made up. The worst are those that tell no one because no one misses them and only found because their body is making a stench. Many of our society's problems come from mental health issues being neglected. Look at poverty or drug addiction, or abuse. You can trace it back to mental health yet our system is a joke.

@NoNoNoNii - Sorry but no. That's not what the data says and quite frankly an oversimplification of a complex issue. Example: a large number of these can be broken down into two groups. Young Males, and Old men. Around the 30's men tend to have found their place in the world and it gives them great purpose and drive. When they hit 50, things change. Kids aren't around. People you love start dying all around you and will only get worse as you get older and that's the BEST case situation. I'm not even going to get into health issues, and losing any reason to live other than seeing more and more of your life stripped away. You also assume people who kill themselves are weak. If you look at the data, these men are usually worn down over many years. They try to make themselves better but fail, or just too beaten up. Suicide among soldiers, Police officers, Fight fighters, and EMTs are very high but I would never call any of them weak. Just years of the world beating you down and not taking care of yourself until all you see is nothing but bleakness. This is been an issue long before the internet. You can trace it back to the decline of families, especially absent positive father figures, and weakening of the social fabric that binds communities together. In the past you had communities that knew each other and for better or worse supported each other. Today, you can live next door to someone for decades and not know their name.

@@MsBabylove11 - Sounds simple doesn't it? It's obvious but it's really a dynamic problem based on the stage of life you are in. When you are young, it is most likely a temporary situation. You have many more stage in your life that will be wildly different from the previous (usually every 10 years). However, it's not quite accurate for older men. It's not a Temporary issue but a compounding one. Imagining building up your life for decades and then you watch it fall away piece by piece and can't do a thing about it. Your health failing, so physically you can't do things and your options are much less. Things you like stop existing. Imagine being marred for decades and they die of old age. You can't replace that. You only travel these days to go to funerals. The longer you live, the more you will lose and suffer,. My point is the issue of suicide is often told by the young and over simplified. However, the solution is simple. See a person falling away? Reach out to them and let them know they are not alone. Even strangers can bond over basic human kindness. Something lacking in this very isolated cynical world. You might just save a life and not know it.

The parallels and double entendres in this song are just off the hook. The chorus highlights this and how easily someone can succumb to the darkness. "I dont wanna be alone in the darkness" is the cry for help of someone going through depression and addiction like em did. Leading into "hello darkness my old friend" when the despair gets too much and the people who commit these crimes fall off the edge. And then it all culminates in em (who got help and got sober) heading into the flashbulbs of fame vs the shooter heading into the flashbulbs of the press over the atrocities they committed. Just so much to process in this song. Mad props to em for doing this.

This is why I got a gun and a a license to conceal it. Preventable shootings happen every day. Although I live in Colorado now, being from north Texas originally, the recent church shooting there hit home. That could have been me or my family.
The US government won’t do anything, the Republicans and Democrats argue and do nothing, and the NRA has too much power and prevent and progress from happening.
All these facts led me to purchase my first and only gun, because when (not if) I’m out in public trying to enjoy life and being alive, I’m not going to let a madman have power and control over me by having a gun. I WILL defend myself and the people around me.

I've always admired songwriters & performers with the guts to tackle heavy subjects in the first person. There's a good chance that it will confuse and enrage ppl. Frank Iero (most well known as the guitarist of MCR) wrote the song "I am going to kill the President of the United States of America" for his side project after touring in the Middle East. It's from a terrorist's POV. He was paid a visit by the Secret Service and told he would be monitored for 5 yrs. He can never perform the song live and never re-release the song on another album. I believe that was under Pres George W Bush. I wonder if Trump will do something about this song. I mean, it's not the same situation and he's a little busy right now.

It’s definitely got the lyrical content to equal Stan and still hits as hard. I’d say it’s close at least

A true masterpiece to be studied. Genius double triple entendre in lyrics and video. Omg. Portugal here for the Goat Eminem. Always. RIP all victims and condolescenses to families. Overall message, video, lyrics for me is the best video ever in a song, period.

This would have been much better if he didnt know what the song was about before he listened to it because the whole song is a double entendre.

Seen this when it dropped. I can say that little that I run into phases me anymore. But this,THIS.....DAMN.. I FEEL THIS START TO FINISH. I hesitantly admit I deal DAILY. I remember early as 13 feeling hopeless. It's in my family, its now in my babies Gene's. It's a hopeless, endless cycle mixed with anxiety that you just cant understand even as you deal with personally. Mixed with the insane empathy for these victims...I uncontrollably put myself in the shoes of these lost lives, the fear, the franaticism... I hurt so bad for anyone this lost. This is prime example of why I respect this man as the artist and person he is..WOW...the tears are flowing. Hit home bigtime
