    I was so pleased to see one of my favourite birds featured in your latest video. Unlike your stunning and amazing photos, I have only managed record shots of Barn Owls to date. In fact, I have had far more success with Short-eared Owls on the south Essex marshes in winter.

    Another interesting video and love the banter between you two. Only in England do people ever use the word, "Supper". Quintessentially British.👍
    I'm back from my five weeks in the UK and I'm starting to wade through over 5000 (at least) photographs for processing. Some firsts for me include Peregrine Falcon (Chorley), Long-eared Owl (Burnley), Atlantic Puffin (Bempton Cliffs), Buzzard, Marsh Harrier, Kingfisher (Martin Mere RSPB), Nuthatch, Long-tailed Tit, Jackdaw, Razorbill, Guillemot, Black-headed Gull, Fulmar, Kittiwake, Lapwing, Hobby (Leighton Moss RSPB), Red Squirrels (Penrith) and more.
    One thing that I didn't realise I missed was the call of some of the common species. Seagulls are a classic example. Great trip and I visited some great places, some of which I discovered from watching your videos. Keep 'em coming. 👍

    Smashing shots and vids of those barn owls! The one of the owl looking directly at you was amazing. Congrats to Pops on that new 400mm lens! I know a guy who has that and he gets stellar results even with the 2x TC for peregrines! Probably the best all-around lens for bird photography on the market now. Makes us Canon shooters jealous, especially the built-in TC.

    That was a top video Dan and Pops. Lots of great photos and video and some interesting shots to say the least by both you gents. And also like the way you talk about the behavior the birds, how do you figure that out and put yourself in a position to get the shots. And persist! I felt like I was right in the middle of the shoot with you on some of those videos. Here he comes here he comes.10 o'clock 10 o'clock. Get on and get on, lock on lock on. It was a lot of fun. Hope to see many more.

      Thanks very much Scott, it certainly sounds like I achieved what is always the aim of putting the viewer into the shoot with us. Thanks for sharing that, as it has really made my night.
      What I will say is that there was several weeks of planning and observing that went into this video, ensuring that I knew exactly what the behavioural habits were of the owl before I brought Pops along.

    • @simonbooker
      @simonbooker 2 месяца назад +1

      Your close up shots with 400 (no 2x?) are so sharp 👏👏you have got me thinking now as F5.6/7.1 , 1/400@ 9pm at night just cant stop ISO spiralling and even Topaz can't rescue that. The loss of light between 8pm and 9pm in August is quite startling 😖

    • @danwillis_photography
      @danwillis_photography  2 месяца назад

      You are absolutely right Simon. I did try the 2x TC with the 400 but tbh the ISO climbed so high the images were going to appear soft and so it was better to shoot at 400mm and then crop in to the image.

    Awesome stuff Dan & Stu,
    Everyone loves a barn owl 🦉 ❤
    Some super footage & stills, love the gentle rivalry & banter between father & son too & chuffed to see Stu looking so well & out & about. (He’s still the better photographer Dan, & deep down you know it!) 😂
    Seriously though, you guys are both great photographers & entertainers & I love the content you put out.
    Going back to the kestrel vs barn owl scenario; I have witnessed & photographed (very badly) this behaviour myself on many occasions. And you’re both dead right, the barn owls have learnt to outpace the kestrels to get that food back to the owlets safely. Down here in Suffolk, the ones that I have watched for the past 4 years do the opposite to what your Northern barn owls do though…
    Our owls get the prey & come in low with it until they’re approaching the barn where the box is located; then they go up really high & dive really fast into the barn - almost peregrine like but obviously slower. It’s fabulous to witness, & by adopting this method it seems to have the kestrels stumped. In an out & out open field aerial battle, the kestrels win every time. They’re very fast, agile & simply out manoeuvre the barn owls to rob them of their prey. All a part of the hierarchy that is the wonder of nature!
    A fantastic vlog, told honestly as well, depicting the many hours & visits it takes to get enough footage & captures together to produce a viable vlog.
    Great stuff guys!
    Fabulous sunset shots too 🙌👌👏👏👏
    Keep on keeping on!
    All the best,
    Nick

    You're so lucky to Barnies that are out during daylight Dan. Very lucky where I am to have quite a few nest sites but they are rarely on the wing until late and after sunset.
    One tip on tracking them while in flight and videoing. Try using the screen and not the viewfinder with a fluid video head and panning handle. I'm shooting Z9 with 500 f4 and find is much easier and smooth that way.

    Hi Dan, another great video! I have looked through your past videos to see if I can find a one reviewing the Nikon Z 400mm 2.8 + TC, as I am contemplating purchasing one. If I there is a video, could you please provide me with a link please, I would be very interested on your thoughts of this lens as a wildlife lens.

      Thanks Brian, we have not yet done a video specifically on the 400mm. Now that you have mentioned it, it is something that Pops and I are looking at putting together 👍🏻

      @@adampryke7118 yes it’s a 1.4 built in TC, it’s a fantastic design that only requires the flick of a switch to engage it.
