- I'm a black girl living in Spain and this is my experience. Hey there! if you're new here then you probably don't know that I've been living in Valencia Spain for 2 years now. I'm sure you've clicked on this video because you are interested in finding out about what's it's like being black and living in Spain. It's horrible how people of my color and myself have to think about how the color of our skin affects our lives, but today I wanted to share how being black and in Spain is going for me.
I love it here! Truly the people are so nice, and while I can't speak for everyone, I do not feel as if I am being looked at more for the color of my skin. Most people here mind their business. There have been a few occasions where I may get a couple stares, especially from the security guards at the supermarkets, but I try to not let that faze me. Truly I walk around as if I own the place sometimes😂 I am very comfortable here and not fazed at all that I am a black girl all alone in Spain. Plus there are many black people here in Spain, Valencia specifically is full of international people which I absolutely love, and speaking from assumptions I'm sure that Madrid and Barcelona are very international as well.

@@joseantoniocastro1486 This has nothing to with skin color obsession but with literal historical facts and current situation of what's going on. I'm not going to go into details about what has happened and what is happening to people ppl my color, because the history is long and it's still going on. I certainly don't only consider people of my color as my brothers and sisters. I don't even understand how you came to this conclusion. I literally willingly moved to Europe. This being said, thank-you for sharing your opinion, I respect it, but let me just say I do not agree with it.

First of all, the mere act of walking down the street looking for seeing black people is madness, maybe the problem is that you were educated under a very racist system, and for yoy people are divided in colors. I advise you, if you came to Spain forget about your skin colour, and focus only in you as a inhabitant here in Valencia, one among other, no black, because being black means nothing at all. you have a name and a personality and have a features is part of being a human, all we are different but no for being blonde o fair skinned a person is different from other who is more or less taned or brown, or wathever features this especific person has. You know what I mean. Welcome to Valencia, and enjoy life in Spain, Only another very important thing I need to say to you, Here in Spain we are educated as catholic, and for us, catholics, there is only one race, the human race, and for this reason we don´t care about colours. The problem is that your belong to a protestan based educational system, and protestan people are very racist people, When english people came to América they consider native american people as animals, but in the american parts where the spanish came they mixed with native people, because for us people is people regarless of what colour the people have, So when you will be here forget about this way of thinking, because is a very dangerous one.

I am mixed , african american father and spanish mother. I live in Alicante (Spain). Me and my older sister live in Spain for 26 years (Im 31)
Most of spanish people are not racist, but still racism in Spain, not like in Usa but it happends. Is different when you are a black man than a black woman. I had issues that my sister never has. Im tired of police stopping me, actually i've been stopped today by the police in the way to my bussines. I had a lot of situations living here , anyway spanish people are nice and Spain is a really safe country. I would choose Spain 100 times before live in Usa.
They stop you because they are more suspicious of Moroccan-looking immigrants with all that humanitarian crisis on Spain's shores. It is not a fixation on skin color, just a clue.
@@Miolnir3 im not moroccan looking, and they can see it clearly, they even think that I'm Dominican or cuban. They've been stoping me for more than 15 years, way before the humanitarian crisis. You don't know about my experience with Spanish police to tell me what is the reason.
@@99sovnd i can tell you my brother its becouse of your skin color. I'm Spanish , and as far as i know the parents of my grandfather's parents came all from Spain( diferent regions). I look like a Moroccan person( dont know why, maybe the FACT that they were here for almost 800 years has something to do with it). You can't imagine how many times i have been stoped. I'm From Equatorial Guinea (A Western Country in Africa) I came here 4 months ago and everything it's okay, i havent had any bad experience. They may look at you a little when you walk on the street but nothing further than that.
They treath me well, when i go to places, shops or idk... Anyways. And i get along with all my white classmates.
I Live in Valladolid.
Anyways, it's not like it's the first time i come here and i speak Spanish perfectly because, it's the main language we speak in my country.

Spain is very open minded actually. They are not racist, they are used to mass migration. I grew up there, I know.
People in the USA think too much about race and color and stuff. Here in Spain we love to make friends with all kinds of people. Most Spaniards do not see color, if they like you they like you for who you are and if they hate you they hate you for something you did to them. In Europe color is not important at all. Like, no one cares if you are black, white or green. Whatever, we do not care 1 bit. Love from Spain (Alicante)!
Si que hay prejuicios y bastante desconocimiento que generan situaciones desafortunadas en muchos casos pero desde luego aquí en España nos choca esa importancia a la "raza" q se le da en EEUU
Yo soy marroquina, nací en España y el racismo que he vivido ha sido constante desde la primaria. Sí que existe el racismo en España. La gente tiene prejuicios y tienden a imponer los estereotipos. Por lo que primero se debería reconocer el racismo que hay en este país para intentar combatir la ignorancia. No olvidemos que Europa es un continente en el cual el racismo lleva siglos, que por algo son los países post-coloniales y que el color de la piel y la etnia sigue siendo un factor en nuestra sociedad y si no solo debemos escuchar el discurso de la extrema derecha la cual cada día es más popular. No deberíamos invalidar la experiencia de una persona racializada y más si uno no lo es. Aún y así debo decir que desde mi experiencia España es uno de los países de Europa que intenta mejorar cada día y que las nuevas generaciones tienen una mente más abierta.

@@Awf780 Totalmente que hay racismo en otros países, no me viene en la cabeza ningún país en el cual no exista el racismo por desgracia. En Marruecos igual existe el racismo. En ningún momento digo que sea un problema único de Europa o Estados Unidos, simplemente exponía al comentario en el cual expone que en España no lo hay y des de mi experiencia lo hay y de forma activa. Por lo que nose si no me expresado bien o he remarcado que sea un fenómeno de Europa pero en ningún caso creo que sea así solo creo que es un fenómeno que el colonialismo, el imperialismo ha intentado imponer la superioridad de la etnia blanca pero no es exclusivo de Europa es un fenómeno mundial.
You wish it was like that, but Spain has a severe racism and homophobic cases rate, we have a very dark past and we still have a long way to go to fix that. It's not as good as you picture it, and not as bad as years ago but it's still a serious problem in the present.
Don‘t think to much about you skin color. You live in Europe not in USA!

@@jazzyniko we aren't perfect by any means here in the states but we are still the worlds melting pot. Not at anytime have i ever felt like people were staring at me, my wife or child in public. Biracial couples in some parts of Europe dont have that luxury.

Hey there! Please keep in mind that this is my own experience here in Spain. Funny enough I watched a video last night on tiktok about racism in Spain and the people had different things to say.
Cycy, el mejor amigo de mi padre era negro, del Sáhara Occidental y de familia muy pobre. En los 70 sí que era rarísimo encontrar personas negras, así que llamaba muchísimo la atención.
Él llegó aquí a estudiar porque consiguió una beca universitaria, pero tenía que trabajar en lo que encontraba para ir tirando. Nos contaba que no solía tener problemas, pero si alguna situación era incómoda o directamente injusta, su arma era el humor y su preciosa sonrisa.
Yo creo que él te diría: "si lleva así dos años, cuando se te acerque otra vez el guarda tú te giras hacia él con tu mejor sonrisa y le das los buenos días o tardes con tus mejores modales, y luego, dile que le agradeces su protección pero que tras dos años ya sabes orientarte por el supermercado".
Pero yo te digo que, si es necesario porque no lo"pilla", acudas al encargado y pongas una queja. Eres una cliente igual que cualquier otra y tienes los mismos derechos, no tengas miedo.
Por otro lado, la gran mayoría de personas negras que vas a encontrar son africanos sin formación académica superior, cuando no están de forma ilegal, así que trabajan en lo que pueden.
Son sus hijos los que tienen más oportunidades gracias a sus estudios, donde yo vivo ya hay una nueva generación, y algunos ya tienen otros trabajos universitarios o se preparan para ello.

He looked at my father and said "Tony, today it's a really hot day, I'm sweating as a White", and then looked at the man " isn't, man?" 😅 The man blushed and came back to his group.

El tema de la señora en la cola del supermercado es un sufrimiento 🙈🙈 no creo que sea por una cuestión racial, me pasa habitualmente al ir a comprar 😒 sobre todo con las señoras mayores... se creen que son las dueñas del lugar!
Y con el guardia de seguridad yo haría algo, pondría una queja. Que lo hiciese una vez, vale, pero dos años...

Valencia may not be as famous as Madrid or Barcelona but it is one of the biggest cities in the country, and cities use to have a lot of diversity and most of Valencian/Madrilenian/Barcelonian etc etc people are used to it. However, in Spain there are not as many black people as in other European counties like for example France or the UK, the majority of them came here not that many years ago and they primarily live in the big cities.
So it's not uncommon that if you go to a village or you run into someone from a town or village some people (specially old people that have only seen black people in movies or some TV shows) stare at you because of how uncommon it is for them to see a black person, and if they are ignorant they immediately will think u came from an African country, cause as you said the great majority of black people living in Spain came from Africa, not from France, UK, USA or whatever.
I have been living my whole life in a 25 000-people town in the South corner of Spain and I literally only know 1 black person that lives there. However, since I'm at university I live in Seville, a big city where it is much more common to see more racial diversity and obviously people are used to it and open-minded about it.
So what I mean is that is not about getting mad at some people just for them staring at you, of course the security guard that always stares at u is a crazy person that keeps thinking you're gonna steal smth even when you've been going there for 2 years and neither good was the reaction of the women you said, but as you know those are exceptions.
Of course I know in Spain there are bad disrespectful racist people and those are the few that insult someone only for having a darker skin, as well as there are racist people in every country, but you see, in the great majority of the cases they are maybe not used to a different-race person and that's why some people may make u feel uncomfortable. In the end of the day, it's all about respecting the others and being kind, and that's what some people have to learn. Thats my point.

I'm a Spanish white guy and my boyfriend is Ghanaian.
Although there are a few racists in Spain (like in most countries, unfortunately)
I feel that in Europe in general some extreme right-wingers are not so much racists but anti-foreigners or anti-immigrants. Like you said, there's currently a lot of African people in Spain, and people, like that woman in the restaurant they don't see you so much as a black woman, but as an African woman, and will say a remark about your country, and yes, maybe add a raciall slurr for flare.
Unfortunately, these people have issue with African, Latinos, "Moros", but also against white romanians, bulgarians and other source of immigration.
Also many of these African have had to arrive in dangerous little row boats or similar, so their situation is not exactly legal, that's why it's difficult for them to get legal contracts, and also many of them are on a longer journey to further parts of Europe.
Unfortunately these people do exist, but luckily society is turning around and it's these people who now have to keep in the DL since they are becoming the rarity.

When people follow you in the store, you should hand them your shopping basket, make them carry your items while you shop, and ask them for shopping tips. They will get very offended and leave you alone, or continue to help you.
Nowadays Spain is pretty safe and almost nobody want to have problem. There are a lot of people who criticise arabian (most of em) and other immigrants that arrive the country illegally, because, under their condition and for several reasons that can be discussed, behave badly. There are other group of people who dont like gispies because of the same reason.
But there are not real racist in the country, there are not people who dont like others only due to the color of their skin (very few people). Some are just getting angry against bad conducts. We have to understand every position and reach solutions.
The more people talk about racism the more they create it. I'm from a place where no one talks about it, and we are all colors. My mom is white my dad black and that's normal.
Not true, racism is very real. But worse in some countries. Not talking about it will not make it go away. I just hope one day, it wouldn't ever have to be an issue again.

I feel you girl. I am mixed African-Filipino but I look Filipino. I also face the security guard thing in the supermarket. It improved when I started to interact with the workers. I still love Spain though ...
This seems to be a very interesting and beautiful place, I hope I can visit sometime in the future when all this is over. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much!

I'm not black, but when I go to certain grocery stores or malls, security guards follow me. The way I take it is that I may look suspicious to them, but would never think it is because of my skin color.

I don't have an inferiority complex. I never encounter issues. I'm nice and respectful to everyone, so everyone is nice back to me. When some security keep an eye on me, I think they're doing their job, which is to protect the business.

Honestly I enjoyed your video. In fact there is, in my opinion, a little detail I wanna mention. As I know English has been studied in Spain in schools for, approx, 30 years now. The thing is that, in general, the biggest deal with the language is not a bad English level in Spain, but the people who feel shy or braveless to try talking in English without fear. To put it in that way... the don't feel comfortable. talking in English (lots of people) because the think they have less level than they actually have, and don't even try to see what happens doing it because they think they're gonna be judged in some way or so. Sounds crazy but I noticed that in London, in a huge percent of spaniards, who told me how they hesitate all the time.
Apart of that... I truly believe that in general here in Spain are not as much into race issues as it seems in other countries. Spaniards will judge, if the do so, the person, not the color of the skin. I'll give you the point with something I lived a few years ago. I had a black colombian girlfriend and, to be honest, nearly everyone on the street used to stare at us, but not because of her race. It was because she was incredibly taller than me, and our friends were always making jokes for that reason. Never had troubles being an interracial couple, or even perceived a tiny sign of disapproval in others
And, to sum up.... sorry if I made mistakes using english, keep on "opening" yourself to the world and congrats, Cycy!

The issue is black people in Spain are from Africa for the most part. There is no tension that exists with blacks from the USA. I was in the Air Force for the 6 years while I was in Spain. I spent 3 months in Valencia and made friends while traveling. The people are very independent and if you do not reach out they will keep to themselves. But when approached they are friendly. I my wife was from Sevilla and lived the Spanish stile. Your Spanish is excellent but since are very independent you do not understand the life and culture. Reach out to your classmates and enjoy the experience. Tome un vinito y racion de algo que te gusta.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I've been living in Barcelona for about eight years and have noticed the security guard nonsense and cutting in line, too. Here there's kind of a semi-aggressive "'ultim?" or "ultima?" to check who is last in line often when people to clump rather than queue. I have absolutely had people cut in front of me then lie loudly about it. Hang in there.

En España, los seguridades de supermercados también me siguen y soy caucásico-nórdico 😂...es su forma de hacer ver a sus compañeros que hacen su trabajo, no es contigo o por tu color de piel. Y recurrir al color de piel, es algo bastante superado para llamar a alguien...negro, es una característica física, no buscamos un eufemismo, ser negro es como ser rubio. ¿Racismo?, claro, idiotas hay around the world. I'm a white Brit and one of the things I noticed when I moved to Spain was the lack of racisum, discrimination in Spain towards black people which was very refreshing. It feels very safe here for everyone I use to feel anxious if a group of teens or early 20ish guys walked towards me specially at night. Even more so if they had hoods and the hood up, from experience it's an indicator specially if not cold that they dont want to be recognised. Here no fear!
However want to ask you what do you feel about the Spanish tradition of 'Blacking-up' for the 3 kings, or festival's?
Hey there, thank you for leaving a comment! About the Three Kings parade, I have to be honest I hadn't heard of it until I came here. I went to a parade in Alicante and I was definitely surprised. It does feel weird to a certain extent but the whole celebration was beautiful to watch. I can't say I feel very strongly about it as I understand the concept and the story. I'm not exactly thrilled by it either, but I can see and understand that it's part of their culture and it does no direct harm to black people.

Haha, that super market thing happens here with my husband aswell. He is from Armenia, and in Mercadona we always get followed when we shop together there...they think he's å crook and will steal. Not my any means do i mean he is experiencing the same as colored does.

Siento decir, que los migrantes de Europa del Este, sobre todo unos, tienen un tipo de personas que viven de pequeños hurtos. Y claro según el aspecto pueden desconfiar.

I lived and worked in Spain (near Granada) for a year and a half. I've travelled to many Spanish cities, villages & towns and can hold a conversation in Spanish. Yes, at times I was stared at and a couple of times directly discriminated against but it's no different to my experiences growing up and living in England. I still have Spanish friends and if you dive into their culture and forget about what you look like... no one cares. In the main, the Spanish people I have met, have been welcoming, helpful, funny, and kind. P.S. I'm going to Madrid for the sixth time next month, can't wait!
Girl I agree for the most part, especially in València, people are very chill. I, like you, have had very few racist experiences since I've been here. The only issue I have is that Spanish people always assume you're like escaping some war torn country or extreme poverty because you're black and that's gotten really old really fast. Also Spanish people just stare... It's a thing 😂 but I still love Spain tho!

Never feel ashamed of skin colour, creed, religion, im english and white, and i can tell you many english that travel abroad will be looked at more by natives than you, because many of them can be embarrassing when they travel to other countries, but so can many other people; i speak spanish and its great to listen to black communities speak spanish, i have learned a lot from Equitorial Guinea,
I´m happy you have a good time here! To be fair, I´ve heard some first generation black Spanish from African parents complain that people do have a hard time seeing them as "Spanish" instead of as "foreigners who have made Spain their home". A subtle difference that may be hurtful. Beyond that, I´ve never heard any complaints and I´m glad you didn´t have any bad experiences!
PD: The line cutting is not cause of color, but because you look young and foreign, and foreigners tend to hesitate more to tell old rude ladies off and they know it. My white Canadian friend had that happen to him a lot too until I persuaded him that sending the lady in question "Señora, la cola está atrás!" loud enought for the entire line to hear will solve all hsi troubles

Creo que en usa realmente depende a qué lugar vayas. Al parecer hay estados que son muy abiertos al intercambio cultural y otros que son muy conservadores

In general, our people are cheerful and friendly. The kind of racial thing had never been an issue in Spain or any Spanish-speaking country. I am mixed, indeed. However, there are jerks in Spain too (but not a great number). In my city, in Seville, there is the Brotherhood of the Black People (founded in 1393), La Hermandad de los Negritos. Now, there are no black people in Seville of Spanish origin because the African blood is mixed already with the locals. That shows how Spaniards deal with race. If they like you, you are part of them. By the way, the first city in the USA founded by free black people, Fuerte Mosé, was within the boundaries of Spain.
South America is very racist, so I wouldn't say all spanish speaking places. Yes Spain is good in my opinion, ran into a couple of jerks, but you can't stop that anywhere.

I live outside of Benidorm and work as a promoter in tobacco shops there and yes I see the staff watch Black people like you described and not look at people with lighter skin colors the same way. I’m going to Valencia monday i’m so scared. I experienced racism yesterday in Benidorm i was walking to a shop and an old woman called us “ mono “ who means monkey. I went to Alicante today and same the shopguard was always looking at us and following us. The cashiers were sometimes very cold.

True, it’s rare to see black people working at the supermarket or shops, it also happens with the hijabis and it’s frustrating that keeps happening, hope it changes.
Racism is everywhere but there’s not a lot in Spain. I had a few people yell at me or family for being Moroccan things like “go back to your country”, I was bullied because of that; but I am well aware is not the same as being black.

Thank you very much for this video ! I’m very interested in living in Valencia, which is not as a big city as Madrid or Barcelona as you said. My husband is black (Haïti) and I’m half black half caucasian. So this question about how black people are welcomed was important to me (currently living in Paris). Based on your opinion, it seems to be very similar to Paris. I mean, in general you live well as a black person, but there are always a few exceptions of stupid people... I was afraid of agressive racism such as violence, but it does not seem to be common, which is a great point.

I didn't expect to see your experience from a "black woman" point of view hahahaha I mean I didn't even think about you being a black woman, like I have friends and, by chance, they are black or Romanian or Latina. I'm white and my friends do have experience with racist even now days but it's not a main problem or a problem at all. @M T Hi! Thanks for leaving a comment. In my case I'm here on a student visa as I am studying here. I actually moved from Haiti to Spain. I know there are several types of visas so depending on your situation you you'd have to see which one applies to you.
I know a few people that moved from the US and Canada to come teach english here. They join the Auxiliares de Conversión program (English Language Assistant) maybe it's something you'd be interested in. I totally recommend doing some research on it😃

Hi MT, I moved to Spain from the USA 15 years ago, you don't need a visa if you are only staying for 6 months or less if I remember it correctly, if you want to live here longer you need to apply for residency or have a visa for work or to study. The quality of life is much better here compared to the States in my opinion, people work to live rather than living to work is how I put it. Obviously during the pandemic we've had to put the normal nightlife, fiestas and parties on hold but the hopefully we'll be back to normal life in Spain soon! The other thing I noticed immediately about Spain compared to home was the lack of gun violence, shootings are almost unheard of because of strict gun laws. I've only heard of two shootings in the 15 years I've been here. I was shot at twice when I lived in the states, once in a car and once walking my dog in our gated neighborhood. The healthcare here is nationalized and even private insurance is a pittance (my son pays 19 euros a month for full coverage and he got a free tablet for signing up!)

We don't care about the black skin or any color of skin. Here in Spain we had the biggest mix of races in all the world, for example the arabs conquest half of the country in the middle age for 700 hundred years , also the germans and the romans did the same, when we went to south america our mix blood were even more mixed because of the miscegenation with all of the natives of there, my dad is dark as the night and have blue eyes so... We honestly don't care about your racial debates that makes your society divided, really, the people that lives in United States look like inquisitors with all these themes of the races and the cultures and all of that stuff, (and if a spanish is comparing all of you with the inquisition maybe all of you should take it seriously).

Just to clarify, in some supermarkets or shopping centers you can have employees constantly asking you if you need something. Not because you're black, it happens to me every day. I know it's annoying but apparently they do it following orders. They won't leave you alone and it's not racial.

I am Spanish and white. The people asking for money when you are having something at a terrace/restaurant are notoriously disrespectful and rude. I have been called "a bad person", and very nasty things. Cutting somebody in a line is also really common. Too common. IT happens to me all the time. So, I would say those things as rude and uncomfortable as they might be are a sign you are being treated as everybody else. We, the white one hundred generation pure blood Spanish suffer them on a daily basis. I do not like those things either, I hate them, but it is a common thing here. I am really glad you are having a good time here and enjoying the country despite the covid restrictions.
Oh! And in expensive shops and stores it is customary for the shopkeeper to ask if you need something! They do It ALL the time. Always. Apparently they are told to do so by management. If I enter a Gucci store and they do not ask if I need something I would feel like they do not want to sell anything to me! Even in El Corte Inglés it is customary to ask if you need something. They always do unless they are busy with other shoppers. It is a country thing I guess because I have not noticed it in other countries. So, say "no, thanks I am just looking" And go on or ask for "Yes, actually I am looking for... " And expect to be shown all the white shirts the store has (or whatever you are looking for).

As a Madrilean, I haven't got many chances to interact with many black people, I had one black classmate in primary and one in college. I wish I could get to meet more black people in real life. We do have a racism problem in Spain like in pretty much everyEuropean country but I'm also very glad it's not as bad as the US.

Eso es mejor y peor, por una parte la llevamos siglos de adelanto social EEUU y por otra parte el problema de la xenofobia es mucho más complicado de tratar.
Bueno, lo del guardia del supermercado es porque por tu color asumen que lo más probable es que seas de algún país en el que robar en las tiendas (shoplifting) es muy común. Es por el país no por la raza.

I am half spanish half american and I do notice a huge difference from Spain and the US when it comes to racism... in the US wow... My mom was black and she preferred here a million times. True about workers, but I live in Madrid and must admit I think: 1st there is generally no work. 2nd As you said we get many africans and they tend not to speak Spanish, but if you go to the south or whereever they have more americans (non students) or even here in Madrid or BCN you do see a few, just that for the US is not easy to get a permanent residence unless they marry or get a job. I did not even know I like some one from Iran till I went back to the US... and CA and TX let me know lol for Spain I am ... Spanish they tend to not look at shades but more do you speak the language and are you nice, at least that is my opinion. By the way, not only colored people get sometimes looked at. For example as a man if I'm alone in a shop i sometimes feel I'm being watched but not if I'm with my girlfriend or a female friend. My mates tell me that's because I look moroccan. I guess there are also people who look a bit dodgy even if they are white as snow.
