your hackle tie in technique is the classic soft hackle style. funny how so many of the other tyers havn’t learned this technique. i don’t actually do it either but i think i’ll start tying in the hackle first like you did. the Carey Special is one of my go to flies for small streams and lakes. i tie it on no.8 Salmon hooks just because i like the hook style. i also make a tinsel/ribbed body with a peacock thorax for large nymph imitations. it is also really effective on smaller hooks as a Caddis. thanks for the vid
I like the way you tie these. Giving that a good scratch really gives it a buggy look. I tied some about a month ago and tried them in still water where dragon flys live and the trout seemed to like them. Great job.
Definitely one of my favourites - I love how this fly pulsates through the water. Great video Deb! I can't wait to use some Semperfli dirty bug yarn the next time I twist some of these up.
Hi Deb:I tied up all sizes 6-12 and they look great. I'm 40 minutes from the mountains in Alberta Canada and our rivers are high so that leaves lakes and ponds . I haven't gone yet but I sure will when the weather turns a bit wormer. Thanx for the pattern ,happy tying Ken.😃 I used bug yarn in caddis brown, green olive, pale olive. It's is real hard to get and sales out fast.
Oh right on, so cool... that's a great color for this fly. One lake I fished in the lower mainland I always used that fly because they hardly ever went for anything else. Cheers🐟
I fish this pattern a lot in a high mountain lake after fish spawn. Water temps were 63 degrees F and the trout were biting hard and jumping 3ft in the air. From my float tube they were higher than my eye 👀 level. 😂
I tie and fish this fly pretty much the same way as you do I have them in different colors and hackles including a maroon colored one with matching pheasant rump hackle that is my favorite along with a black one with some blue thin ribbing. Just started using the dirty bug material with some success in smaller sizes great fly Deb , question have you fished a olive willy ?
I have not fished an olive Willy (as far as I know ha)...yes maroon and black Careys, as well as red have been very good colors for me as well. Cheers 🐟
Absolutely beautiful work Deb

Love this one Deb, Gary Barnes sent me some and I’m sitting down to try it now. Will have to watch the hackle a few times, though

Love the Carey and fish it religiously for Brooke’s as a streamer!
