College Athletes Can Finally Cash-In on Their Names

  • The NCAA recently released policies allowing college athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness. Athletes are already signing lucrative deals, but navigating the new territory is complex. There’s no federal law to regulate the emerging market.

I mean a person who plays at a college level might just play the sport to pay for college and have no interest in going pro, so these athletes deserve their "wages".

I see no reason that they shouldn’t be able to cash in on their names. College players are much closer to pro players than college athletes of years past. In years past they had to have the grades to get into a college, now all that they need is a good playing resume. Half of these athletes don’t have the grades to get into college as it is, many that are playing for a college team have majors or at least use a list provided by college coaches that pad grades and/or make special dispensations around the player’s practices and games allowing them to take tests or turn in papers late without any penalty. My dad was a college professor and I was a TA when I was in college, I’ve seen this first hand, it’s not just a rumor.

NCAA essentially says they already do get a salary - tuition, room, boarding, food, travel, athletic gear, training equipment and facilities. That's well over 100k a year, although it benefits the colleges very very much. I agree with you and think they should get a salary, maybe 30-40k and college should keep a percentage of that in an account for them for when they graduate to help them start their life once they finish giving their college years to the NCAA

No you dont.) this is why male nba makes more, because they sell more tickets and jersey items. The industry is all hype and merchandise advertising.. not sports anymore. Lebron made millions before he even stepped a foot into the pro leagues, just like many baseball players from colombia and japan, or the basketball players who are 7 foot tall.. they just instantly sell things and get money). Your sport also has to sell tickets to crowds, and merchandise... male pro nba sells hats, mlb baseball sells yankess hats to the entire globe of baseball fans now, not just nyc fans... this is why most sports do not actually make a crowd to sell things to. That is why pro sports with lots of corporate advertising has bigger checks, because they pay more to get you to sell more items. Like lebron and sprite and nike, he just puts it in his hands and little kids will buy it with his logo on it. If you play some sports nobody watches, of course youll make less, especially women sports who has less fan per stadium ticket sales, proves this.

College Athletes should be "employees" or independent contractors! Why do we insist on this "Farce", that some how Talented Athletes who were average students at best are able to magically be accepted into a Top Tier University, maintain and compete with high performing students, while at the same time training 3-4hrs a day and performing exceptionally well on the field? Can you imagine what the NBA or NFL would look like if only those with 1300+ SAT scores were playing or who could only play! Seriously, no body cares if Athletes are really able to pass their classes, grades, if they graduate or not, much less if they are able to get a job after. So, why not allow them to get paid as Employee's or Contractors, training full time and focused on playing ball vs. pretending to be students? Yes, some naysayer is going to give a few of cherry picked examples of successful graduates after athletics, but I can give you a list 20x as long of those that did not.

If Universities want more clear ties to their independent contractors (in a Universe where the NCAA took this suggestion), they could let them be part time students. It's not like being a part time student is a novel concept, entire Master's programs are designed around this assumption. Student loans don't come due while you're in part time education. Making them part time students would solve so many problems, while still letting the Universities claim they are student athletes. And if the inevitable grade scandals keep happening (because when you have so many hours of sports on top of class something has to give), well then the NCAA might consider allowing part time students under certain circumstances. An attempt to make the constant scandals go away.
