College Athletes Can Finally Cash-In on Their Names

- The NCAA recently released policies allowing college athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness. Athletes are already signing lucrative deals, but navigating the new territory is complex. There’s no federal law to regulate the emerging market.

I mean a person who plays at a college level might just play the sport to pay for college and have no interest in going pro, so these athletes deserve their "wages".
Long overdue. South park nailed this.
"Student a-tho-letes" my thats brilliant sir
“Oh Ho ho, student ath-o-letes, how clever sir”
I see no reason that they shouldn’t be able to cash in on their names. College players are much closer to pro players than college athletes of years past. In years past they had to have the grades to get into a college, now all that they need is a good playing resume. Half of these athletes don’t have the grades to get into college as it is, many that are playing for a college team have majors or at least use a list provided by college coaches that pad grades and/or make special dispensations around the player’s practices and games allowing them to take tests or turn in papers late without any penalty. My dad was a college professor and I was a TA when I was in college, I’ve seen this first hand, it’s not just a rumor.
Basketball IS their major.
Finally... Tbh they should all get paid a salary plus benefiting off their name.. but atleast this is a huge step
NCAA essentially says they already do get a salary - tuition, room, boarding, food, travel, athletic gear, training equipment and facilities. That's well over 100k a year, although it benefits the colleges very very much. I agree with you and think they should get a salary, maybe 30-40k and college should keep a percentage of that in an account for them for when they graduate to help them start their life once they finish giving their college years to the NCAA
Yeah finally, it only took 150 years.
They get free tuition and treated like kings with meals etc.

Shout outs to Geo Baker. I’m a Rutgers Alum he has a great future in business and ball glad he’s leading the charge on this
5 star recruits were getting paid behind closed doors anyway, good to finally see it start to be legit for everyone
I had a cousin in hockey Brooke arse s made him pay for everything and gave him so shared room of surplus their slave no get back in the fields couldn't even afford food
He did all the work they made all the money and as usual u get hurt they throw u out
Horses got better treatment then the college athletes atleast they had healthcare and free food
Elites found new ways to make money and no longer require 100% ownership of a player's likeness.
They milk an avenue and when that dries up they "allow" plebs to suggest new methods of giving the elite money

They should get a percentage of revenue also
If they do then they will raise college tution for other students. Like no duh the colleges can afford it but thats how they would counter it. Student athletes are a small percentage whilst us regular students are there to learn to get degrees.
@@fredymendez3864 then people will stop going to ncaa colleges because they priced themselves out of the market. Honestly they are almost there with financial intervention of sports.
@@edmeds1336 thats ridiculous lmfao, making the rest of the student body potentially suffer as a result of a minority. a college should not be a "sports college" or "not a sports college".
@@ethan20559 to late my friend it already is either a sports college or not. Why are there divisions and ivy league or just not?
@@ethan20559 I honestly agree with you it's just to late. You have to change things within a framework before you can change the framework.
Surely the first school to pay their athletes, or allow them to make decent money off their sport will have their pick of the best of the best because everyone will want to go there
This is like legalizing weed. Nothings going to change.
Exactly
I'd like to think that Converse could afford to pay Elmore some money as a goodwill gesture for using his NIL in their advertising.
“Focus less on sports Focus more on Space.”
So can I get paid now while studying in college?
YES that's the point. You could literally get paid for any other college job except sports.
99.999% of athletes won't earn a nickel.
Uh.. false.
They already could... they just did it in cash and behind closed doors.
Are you seriously that out of the loop Vice? Cmon you are partners with Disney and ESPN now, with the disney money you got.. get better reporters.
These kids get nike deals etc and its well known...Lebron is a prime example... you all are so backwards on this lie pushed by black millionaires.
@@dertythegrower You mean 99.999% of college players are receiving money for IRL including my university chess team?
Chess has to sell something. You are not getting the full picture just like Vice is... the college basketball kids like Lebron that actually sell jerseys (do you sell chess merch? No you dont.) this is why male nba makes more, because they sell more tickets and jersey items. The industry is all hype and merchandise advertising.. not sports anymore. Lebron made millions before he even stepped a foot into the pro leagues, just like many baseball players from colombia and japan, or the basketball players who are 7 foot tall.. they just instantly sell things and get money). You have to sell merch for the league, to make those checks.
@@dertythegrower lebron didn't even go to college bro
@@dertythegrower You are full of it. STRAIGHT UP BRUH.
I don't think college players should be "cashing in", but I don't think the colleges should be either. Money has corrupted college sports.
That’s the whole reason for college sports - MONEY. Lmfao.
Its screwing up their heads and their performance. Look at DJ at Clemson and Rattler st OU. Both of them were Stunted by NIL deals.
What do you mean stunted?
@@SalvusGratiumFidem Their progress has been SLOW to No progress
I'm sure the majority of them will make virtually nothing, but the big name, famous guys will make bank.

Proud of the basket ball community
They are already making billions, they are lying and using the race card and claiming sports stars are under paid.. what a HUGE joke by Disney media here (vice is now owned by espn disney owners).. Sad facts, this video is laughable
@Animosity Jones hey man these people are completely blind to their biases and it is impossibility to teach them anything but their ancient tribal beliefs
Your sport also has to sell tickets to crowds, and merchandise... male pro nba sells hats, mlb baseball sells yankess hats to the entire globe of baseball fans now, not just nyc fans... this is why most sports do not actually make a crowd to sell things to. That is why pro sports with lots of corporate advertising has bigger checks, because they pay more to get you to sell more items. Like lebron and sprite and nike, he just puts it in his hands and little kids will buy it with his logo on it. If you play some sports nobody watches, of course youll make less, especially women sports who has less fan per stadium ticket sales, proves this.
I don't like this. These rules void colleges of any responsibility and still they do not have to come out of pocket themselves.
"Pay the man Skip" - Shannon Sharpe
How many billions have been made off the backs of kids from poor neighborhoods? Who makes college ball go around? You know who they should be paid..
Don't worry in the end they won't make a dime!
Sad fact is most of the student athletes aren't losing out on nearly as much as they think they are. Some men's basketball and football players may clean up though.
@@user-qr7ee2cp4y exactly they think of gold mountains but they will never come and if there is money to be made they will be the last to see a cent of it

@@thai9503 you don't factor in outside money not from the NCAA, this is about to be a billion dollar industry, fast
Jerry Maguire: "SHOW ME THE MONEY!"
letting these children make money is great, but is anyone going to teach them how to handle it? NIL acceptance should come with a mandate; that student athletes are required to take a course on personal finance and basic economics... there are already so many GROWN MEN and professional athletes who go broke right after their career has expired. you think pumping big paychecks into even younger and more immature bank accounts is going to improve this situation?
Love it how only the football and basketball players are the only student athletes highlighted every time this is brought up. What the cheerleader or the golfer? You think they’ll get equal pay?
Realistically they bring in the most money and have the most fans. Still everyone should get a fair cut
Did you even watch the video? There was an interview with a sports agent that said the nil laws now have opened up possibilities for athletes of less popular sports to have commercial value. Especially since a lot of track/golf players do have a sizeable social following
Way better than scholarship if you ask me

This set up is awful. The schools should be paying all of them a salary. This only let's the star athletes get paid the rest of the team will get nothing. I have less and less respect for universities in this country they make millions and billions off these kids but refuse to just give them enough to live comfortably. This is a shame and will only cause issues amongst the entire team.
This has taken way too long to happen, finally.
College Athletes should be "employees" or independent contractors! Why do we insist on this "Farce", that some how Talented Athletes who were average students at best are able to magically be accepted into a Top Tier University, maintain and compete with high performing students, while at the same time training 3-4hrs a day and performing exceptionally well on the field? Can you imagine what the NBA or NFL would look like if only those with 1300+ SAT scores were playing or who could only play! Seriously, no body cares if Athletes are really able to pass their classes, grades, if they graduate or not, much less if they are able to get a job after. So, why not allow them to get paid as Employee's or Contractors, training full time and focused on playing ball vs. pretending to be students? Yes, some naysayer is going to give a few of cherry picked examples of successful graduates after athletics, but I can give you a list 20x as long of those that did not.
Nerds and geeks triggered
If Universities want more clear ties to their independent contractors (in a Universe where the NCAA took this suggestion), they could let them be part time students. It's not like being a part time student is a novel concept, entire Master's programs are designed around this assumption. Student loans don't come due while you're in part time education. Making them part time students would solve so many problems, while still letting the Universities claim they are student athletes. And if the inevitable grade scandals keep happening (because when you have so many hours of sports on top of class something has to give), well then the NCAA might consider allowing part time students under certain circumstances. An attempt to make the constant scandals go away.
About time they start getting paid
How’s that fair to those who were before them that deserved this also
So how many years did this take ? Lol.
Too bad college isn't for an education.
Then let us do away with Scholarships once the athletes start gining the cash. Once those Benjamin's start to flow the Atheletic Scholarships need to end.🥀
