The BEST 335i Exhaust for CHEAP | PE MOD Review

  • I very nearly spent over $1500 on a set of Remus Race mufflers for the 335i, this simple modification saved me over $1000 and gave me the exact sound I was looking for. In combination with the BMW PPK tune, the car is absolutely perfect for a fun daily driver. If you can get your hands on the factory Performance Exhaust for cheap, go for that too, it's basically the same thing. I just got tired of scouring junkyards...

Might give this a shot on my E89 35i, which I'm sure has a fundamentally similar muffler (and a "PE" equivalent in the 35is), especially since good aftermarket options are basically nonexistent. Hmm...

I figured it was worth a shot and ended up being exactly what I was looking for. It's likely still too quiet for some but I just wanted to be able to hear my car with the windows down lol.

Heyo Buzzy - Nice inspiring e90 content. Short story, if you're interested...
I've got a similarly trimmed e90; 2011 N55 335xi, 6-speed manual, cold weather and lighting packages, and currently about 84,000 miles. It has the Tasman Metallic grey/green exterior paint with saddle leather brown interior as well. I just don't the sport seats with the lumbar support. I'm new to the BMW world (in fact, this is my first non-Japanese car I've ever owned actually), but I've been watching your e90 videos for some tips/tricks etc.
I've gone through the car and done a lot of maintenance since I got it making sure all the basics are done. I did the OFHG, water pump, thermostat, heater hoses, aluminum mickey mouse flange, coolant reservoir, serpentine idlers/tensioner/belt, aluminum turbo outlet and charge pipe, all the cam sensor & Vanos solenoid o-rings, and replaced the broken cupholder on the driver side to top it all off. I also just had the PPK tune remotely installed by SFBMW coding, and it definitely does make a noticeable difference in the drivability and feel of the manual car.
ANYWAYS, I'm planning to cut open a stock e90 Muffler and do this PE mod as well. I had previously gotten a bolt-on muffler delete kit and tried it out - I agree with you that the resonance/drone/whatever it is is too loud in the car for daily driving. Made it "unbearable" as you said. It sounded dope in tunnels though... I'm hoping to have the same experience as you with the PE mod.
Thanks for the detailed e90 content & upgrade. Fun to hear your perspective.

Glad you’ve found the videos helpful, Paul! You’re definitely on the right track, handling the preventative maintenance and doing the OEM style mods. I think you’ll really enjoy the PE mod, it’s been almost a year with mine and I still love it.

Chopped up a spare E90 muffler this weekend and did the PE mod with some 4" tips. Kinda a messy job but WELL worth it. Only been driving it a couple days but really happy with it. You're 100% right - absolutely no drone and not obnoxiously loud. Gives me a big smile driving through tunnels. Hopefully I'm going to go rip some canyons in the weeks to come!

Some of the pictures I show toward the end of the video along with how I describe it should be plenty, it’s basically what I told my exhaust guy. Opening them up and replacing the resonator on one side with straight pipe, and the perforated section that leads to the exhaust tip on the other side with straight pipe, then closing it back up haha. *I left the pipes leading into the crossover perforated*

Did you leave the secondary cats alone? Would you recommend replacing them with an X-pipe for a little more noise? Thanks for an amazing video, made me feel a lot more confident to do this mod versus scouring 10 year old forum posts!

Everything else is stock, and I’d recommend starting that way. Just do the mod and drive it for a while, see what you think. For me, it’s absolutely perfect. But you may want more volume, so the X-pipe could be a good second move. And thank you!

"PE mod" mimics the performance muffler that came on some of the other models like the 335is. It's a modified factory e90 muffler with some of the baffles cut out.

I had a muffler delete too, it was awful lol. I did this after like 2 weeks with the delete. This is 100% better. With the windows up it’s barely louder than stock and ZERO drone. But with windows down it sounds fantastic, quite a bit more volume than stock.
