On a trip we took to Mariposa in 2020 to record for two layout tours, we were introduced to Bob Jakl. Bob and his family have built a rather large O Scale layout that represents three mainline railroads from the past.
This amazing O Scale layout resides in a huge 34' x 80' building, and took about 30 years to finish. If you think O Scale is just toy trains, you have another thing coming, as this is two rail O and regularly hosts operating sessions.
Join us for a look at the Jakl family's O Scale layout. I hope you will be as impressed as we were when we met the Jakls and found out what they're about.

My condolences go out to the family of Mr. Bob Jakl. I'm glad that the layout will continue on through his lineage. That means I still have an opportunity to visit this gem.
This is a National Treasure

It never ceases to amaze me as to the number of "AMAZING" Layouts there are around. And of course "O" Scale takes amazing to another level. Thanks for showing this beauty.
Three cheers for your mum and her trackwork. It looks seriously real from the "onboard" cameras.
Just wow! Sorry to hear about your dad. What an amazing story on your railroad. I live in the Lagrange area also! I was born at Hinsdale hospital, and drove over that same bridge many of times. My wife’s grandparents banked at that same bank for years! 👌
John, this layout is simply amazing. I love the family participation in it's construction and operation and how they included so much of their family history in the design and planning. Wonderful video. Thanks.
I knew you would like this one, Larry!
I’ve seen pics of this beautiful layout for years. Thank you for doing a video. The pics can’t do this artistry justice. My condolences to the family.
Something To Be Proud Of For Sure !!!
I’m so glad I was able to meet Bob and tour the layout a few months ago. Great video John!
Glad you enjoyed it, Dave. Luckily, the family is involved, so it won't be a sad tale of a layout that gets demolished when the guy who runs it no longer needs it. It's one of the best layout stories I've had the privilege of sharing on the channel. My other favorite is here: ruclips.net/video/x_CHGfxQAD0/видео.html
Wow I watched that the whole way through! I operate HO, but I really enjoyed this video! Hinsdale is 15 minutes from me too! What an awesome layout, and what a great story behind it as well! Love how comfortable the room is. Thanks for sharing, and may Mr. Jakl RIP knowing this layout is in great hands.
Simply unbelievable project. What a joy it must have been to work with such a talented family all pursuing a common passion over the years.
Excellent presentation. Thank you for sharing this beautiful labor of love.
That's great you're able to get this video done before Bob passed, wouldn't amazing layout
That is the most magnificent O scale layout I have seen. I love the two rail O scale. Wow!
Hand cut timber ties. That's amazing. I haven't seen that before.
What an amazing work of art. Best one out there.
A touching family story and nice tour of an amazing railroad. My belated condolences to the Jaki family on losing a great father.
He lived his dream, the railroad certainly, but more so through his family. What a blessing!
WOW. Just WOW.
Wow, beautiful and amazing. What a great family!
Amazing layout! RIP Bob. Your life's work will be cherished for years.
Super. I love that you still use DC. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.

Imagine, just imagine...

Hi from a u.s. railroad fan in england.. wow what a brilliant layout so much to see its absolutely amazing 👏 take a bow 🙇♂️
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is the best layout I've seen on RUclips. Being a photographer the photo work is top notch. The camera angles helped tell the story. Best of all was the commentary that interwove the individual involvement of the family members. Fantastic layout and presentation. Thanks for sharing
Glad you liked it!
Outstanding layout and presentation! Thank you, TSG and the Jakl Family.
Excellent photography, no shakey hand held pan and zoom, great low level camera positions...
The benefits of being a pro, I guess. In any case, glad you enjoyed it!
My son is 6 years old he loves your set up hi from New Zealand
Awesome layout. May this hobby live on forever
Most elaborate layout I've ever seen this is a beautiful layout took a lot of time and work what I love about it the most it's two rail o gauge very realistic better than museum quality.
Incredible!

Beautiful layout! Thanks for sharing.
My grandfather worked on the KATY line out of OKC in the 50s and 60s with Railway Express. Had some some good stories to tell.
What an amazing layout and family. Mariposa is only an hour away from me. It would be great to see the layout in person.
It's a master piece love it thanks for shareing!
What an amazing layout! Very well done. 😃👍
Awesome layout. Top notch, and brilliant and lucky to get a lot of wood from the mall. ✊ RESPECT. Love that 2 rail too. 🚂🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Beautiful layout with some really nicely weathered models
The trackside and cab views are just simply GREAT! They show just how much good work went into this railroad. Thank you for this tour.
I'm sorry for your loss and my thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time of sorrow. Great layout and thanks for sharing. It's just awesome and I love the fact that you have new generations to continue the fun.
Wow!!Very impressive your mother making that track.Your brother building freight car by hand also impressive to.Your brother the artist painting the locomotives and cars wow very cool to.I have the o gauge 3 rail.Hey I am happy what I have. You guys really have a family layout.
This is an amazing layout. To think all ties were hand cut and track assembled in house boggles the mind! O Scale [Guage] is my favorite!
Wonderful layout.
What a wonderful tour, layout and family story. My condolences for your family's loss. So nice that you all have a common interest and memories made together.
Absolutely Amazing!! Definitely one of the best O scale layouts. Thank you for sharing and God-bless.
I'm in awe.. that has to be the most detailed layout I have ever seen..
Great layout and great production as always! Keep up the great work!
As a 40 year Brakeman/Conductor starting on the Missouri Pacific, later bought out by Union Pacific, I can really appreciate the details in yard and industry switching you have here. Surely an Oldhead could get a job on one of these numerous lines. I really thought the kiln at the cement plant was a unique addition! I've been growing a small holiday layout in our basement around our Christmas village. We actually keep it up for 10-12 weeks. It might go an extra week or so this year after watching this. I run 3 trains on 120+ feet of fastrack on carpet. Thanks so much for this video!! This is the best layout and video production I have seen!
Thanks, Tom! You would probably enjoy the Layout Tour Playlist we have here on RUclips: ruclips.net/p/PLnxQpj82XbtoGG46eQx2UC56B0sVjs73g
FANTASTIC !!!
That's one beautiful layout. Your dad was like I am, I'm a Santa Fe fan, and I also operate in DC. (It has worked well for me, these last 50 years in the hobby) I also can appreciate all the scratch built detail as well. Very nice, exquisite work.
well beauty detail layout as was well set up
thank you for sharing video
I feel so blessed that Bob was a good friend. Kathy & I will miss going to lunch with Bob & Elizabeth. The family consists of some of the finest people I know. Hope we can continue the annual October get together. Great video and narration Ed.
Just one awsome layout. Thank you for showing it
Wow!
I live in Westmont, IL, close to La Grange, and I work in Hinsdale. I probably live within 1.5 miles of the 3 main lines that run from downtown out to Aurora. You did a REALLY nice job on the La Grange Road and Stone Avenue stations! I actually recognized them! Thanks for the tour of your layout. Condolences on the passing of your father.
To the Jakl family, what a fabulous layout and work effort. Incredible detail and glad to see the entire family contributed. Beautiful work and weathering. Wish I still lived in California to see it in person. Loved the “hydrocal” party comment and what a way to get the mountains done. Great video. Thanks for displaying your work and artistry.
I am so sorry for the Loss of Bob. My condolences to his family. This is such a wonderful work of art and such an amazing family story and effort. This is a 34x80 family heirloom
Just "WOW!" Wish I had this in HO! Another fabulous layout tour! Watching it again!
This is so neat. I do HO scale myself, but watching others gives me some ideas for my layout. My 3 year old son is showing interest in trains so im hoping mine will continue after im gone.
thanks for sharing your layout, I live down the tracks from where your parents grew up in Downers Grove, I used to take the Burlington commuter into the city for many years
Just wonderful!!!!!! Very realisitic, and the hard work and skill that went into building the layout, is just amazing, Thank you for sharing it with us.
Thank you so much for sharing this incredible an inspiring railroad. What a great video: unique story and talented, dedicated owners/builders. Made my day way over here in Denmark!
Outstanding video!
Amazing 😎🚂👍
Probably the best video yet!
Your layout is the best lve ever seen from England croxteth Liverpool thanks for inspiring me to do only the best j.p.c
Outstanding layout tour John. While my layout does not even begin to compare to this one, the history and conceptual design is substantially similar to mine since my hometown (Downers Grove) was just further west and I also spent time at the Hinsdale hospital in in La Grange which had a great hobby shop.
Occupational therapy, would that be? I'm not being cheeky - I assembled my first scratchbuilt brass locomotive for just that reason after a carpal tunnel operation. The surgeon said, with great delight, that the op was clearly a success!
Awesome
Outstanding production. What an epic layout! The fine craftsmanship and attention to detail are second to none. Just fantastic, would love to see it in person.
Hi John, awesome layout tour 👍. Such a big layout in O scale, that is amazing. Good to have a whole family, that is into modelrailroading 👍.
Thanks for sharing 👏🙏👍, I wish you a successful and healthy 2022, stay healthy, best regards, Dirk 🇩🇪
Wonderful family story and layout.
Man, what an exceptional layout. Loved everything about it. Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely amazing model railroad. Great that you kids and grandkids will be keeping it alive. 👍🏻 🚂
There after 12:51 the signals indicating turnout position, that's the most I've done with signals. Given my messy health, low income, and breakfast nook table sized layout there's not likely to be much more than that ever done. But I tell ya, having that extra confirmation of which way turnouts are set sure is handy!
I am in envy of what your mum and dad have put together for your family . I realize you probably missed several trips with your friends ( but us railway buffs don't mind ) your mum and dad were very special people , so much love ...Robert.
Awesome!
You guys really captured it. I mean the love for trains and your families layout is just amazing. And how you have buildings that relate to you life like the bank, hospital, and family home, that's something I think everyone who model railroads would dream of. Thank you for sharing your treasure 👍👍
Excellent layout!!! Lots of work and dedication went into putting this layout together! Congrats!
This is a really cool layout! I live very very close in Aurora to the CB&Q/BNSF 3 track Chicago to aurora that they modeled! It’s really cool to see the midwestern, especially Chicagoland railroads!
Grand looking ALCOs in the thumbnail.
Am just now at 2:15 in the video, Whoa! That's a serious layout!
That is incredible
Awesome Video
You should do a video on the equipment of this layout.this is one of the best layout I've ever seen
SATX!!
nice layout
Absolutely fantastic! I am putting this on my bucket list - to visit the layout in person!
LTHS graduate 88. I grew up a half mile from Santa Fe speedway. I wanted to model the track and the train that ran behind it. I guess it actually was the Santa Fe railway.
