Amanda, love your adventures! And I have solo’d before… your survival instincts are honed, you challenge yourself, surprise yourself, and if you’re good-natured, you laugh at yourself. The voices in your head tell you you can’t, but you’re capable and careful, and determined. And you do it anyways…. And looking back, it usually adds to the adventure. Ride safe!

Dehydration ALWAYS If you do not have the means to dehydrate your food a tip I use is to get the dehydrated fruit bags from Dollar Store. Get a zippy bag and put a cup of dry oatmeal and a handful of the dehydrated fruit, some coconut milk powder (or your favorite powdered milk) When you are on-site the night before, add water and seal. In the morning you will have creamy oatmeal with plumb juicy fruit. Eat out of the zippy bag, or drop the sealed bag into a pot of boiling water and heat up. Also dehydrate mixed vegies and your desired protein eg plant-based crumbles, plant based chicken or beef threads. Get a bag of Ramon Noodles, add a handful of the dried veggies and protein, and water. If you have a more refined palate add a packet of peanut butter (or the powder) with a little water and make it Pad Thai or Satay flavor.

I know this XC ride has long been in the journals as complete so any and all information is carved in stone. You are a very capable biker and nothing I have seen in this installment would cause me to raise a red flag. I have my own ways of staying safe and they have worked for me . Happy travels this summer Amanda. Stay safe…
Answering Crew question: as a matter of fact I have a lot of food storage equipment from canning to a dehydrator. I make mostly fruit leather and jerky with the dehydrator. I thought about making food for my trips and dehydrating them, but for the bother and rehydrating process, I find I enjoy Commercially made entrees and I augment that with some side dishes of my own, and now from FTA Tim Collins new cook book. My travel routine when traveling solo is similar to what you do, or at least what you video yourself doing. While food is important, it is not the center attraction of my travels, if it is eatable it is fair game whether at a chain burger place or out of a dehydration bag. If I stay at a place a few days, I have more time to prepare a meal and not just add boiling water to some promise of whats in the bag. The only dehydrated food manufacturer I have had consistently good luck with is Mtn House and for what it is, it is easy, filling and minimal clean up.

I have made my own dehydrated meals. Drying meat so that its doesn't stay like leather is tricky so I usually just get freeze dried stuff. I would love to get a freeze dryer but they are so expensive. Most sauces dehydrate well. I have found a few meals that can be made then dehydrated which makes it a little easier rehydrating.

AZ, absolutely loving this! My favorite part of America, SW TX. Recognized everything from Tombstone to BBRSP. Night sky in SW TX like no other place, eh? Hueco Tanks, Guadeloupe Peaks, Marfa. I'm riding with you in my mind. But I confess, I find myself feeling badly that I probably scared the beejezus out of the girl on the bike I was certain was you at the Fossil Bone Exhibit at BBNP on March 6th. I was chasing her waving my arms.. "AMANDA!! AMANDA!!" Not sure what she was riding, but it demonstrated great acceleration as she was, no doubt, looking in the mirror wondering "What's up with that old guy?" Seriously, wish it had been you and I could have introduced you to the twelve college students with me as "a young woman who is living her life her own way, unafraid to take on new challenges."

I haven't done dehydrated but typically start trips with individual servings of either homemade Chili or Stew frozen in a foodsaver bag and it only need be dropped in boiling water for a bit to be ready to eat. Great video! My spaghetti sauce is really bolagnase (sp) also. I have dehydrated several meals - none I would call a success. Edible, life sustaining however not something I was looking forward too…

I would call the Minestrone soup I dehydrated and made for the first episode a success it was actually pretty good, soups seem to be the best bet for successful rehydration I think 🤔 BUT! I think this spaghetti sauce probably would have gone much better had I not tried to cook the pasta with it lol

@@AstheMagpieFlies yeah, I was wondering about your cooking the pasta in with the sauce 😏 but hey, if it worked, what a great time saver 😊

You didn't go to Albuquerque for the wrong turn?😉
I canned some venison last fall to take with me this year. I don't want to throw the jar away after. I think of something.
