      I've been sort of following a plant based diet (with a lot of raw food) for around a year now. I'm currently suffering from chronic constipation and too fearful to eat anything now. I've pretty much given up on all advice but I just wanted people to know that eating a lot of plants can give you horrible side effects. I've researched and researched and cannot find a cure to my worsening problem. I'm most sad and feel very alone with this problem. I wish someone could give me some advice that actually helps because everything I try fails. Sorry, I think you're a really good guy Dr Greger but I just had to tell someone....

    Crohn's, Mediterranean diet, zero crap. Upped fibre, plant foods etc, Crohn's out of control, lost colon. Crohn's didn't even give my 6 months before coming back in full swing after operation. High plant diet with ileostomy is hell! The output doesn't stop, all the indigestible fibre causing pancaking and excess gas causing blowouts. Recently switched to carnivore, eggs, beef, seafood, all from good source. Within weeks I am in full remission, no pancaking, minimal output, don't need to wake up at night to empty my bag anymore. Amazing energy levels, zero brain fog. I eat max 3 meals a day till I feel full. I can tell you exactly how food looks like after small bowel. Meat gets completely liquified, there is not even a single solid chunk. With plants, it all comes out still in the same shape!! Our stomach acidity is set for meat digestion, ph 1,5-2 is carnivore realm! Go back to your roots, times before all autoimmune diseases and farming!

      It is more tricky than that, during the first phase, the healing phase, you need to only eat foods containing soluble soft smooth fibers like soft ripe fruits (avocadoes, bananas, papayas, mangoes, persimmons, melons and similar)with no seeds and peels, various potatoes and very well cooked vegetables and completely avoid all the foods rich in harsh irritating insoluble fibers like legumes, nuts, seeds, raw vegetables, grains(worse gluten ones and whole grains), herbs and spices, for best results, also need to eat low fat/protein and no animals products or minimal amount(1-2 times a week max), yeah it is not easy but it is working to allow the gut to heal in 3 to 6 months.

    Diagnosed with crohn's at 12 y/o. I was on steroids which made my bones weak and I broke my leg. I was on humira which stopped working after a while. I was on cimzia which helped but then I switched to plant-based and all symptoms went away for 3 years. At the beginning of 2021 I got really sick (perhaps covid) and it caused an excruciating flare up with lots of inflammation and a really bad abscess. Now I've been on remicade for almost a year and I've had to increase the dose because I'm developing antibodies and the remicade isn't at a high enough level in my blood. I haven't had any symptoms though and I've been able to refine my plant-based diet to almost cut out all processed foods. If my GI tells me the remicade isn't doing anything, I might see how it goes without medication again.

    Found diet relief and dropped meds 2 years ago. I eat grass fed beef and cheese, and wild caught omega 3 fatty fish, along with mostly veggies, some grains and legumes. My diet is plain but I'm not one to get burned out usually.
    If I eat out literally anywhere or eat certain processed foods, I'll have a flare within 24hrs. I kept a food diary for 3 years to understand what triggers me.
    Preservatives, food dyes, natural flavorings, and chemicals added to meat and veggies during the growing process, ended up being the main triggers, along with soy and canola oils.
    If veggies bother you, spends a few extra bucks(same with meat) and buy organic or grow your own. Might just find it's not the food itself, but what comes with it.

      Anyway, sorry to hear about your suffering. I hope you will figure out the optimal ratio of anti-inflammatory foods like fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts, seeds, and legumes that will clear it up. As for the fiber issue, could you try introducing it gradually and allowing the bacterial colonies that break it down to grow gradually?

    • @Gt3ch
      @Gt3ch 3 года назад +5

      @@minifix I really appreciate the kindness and sincerity in your reply. Plant foods have high _micronutrient_ (and sometimes protein) density per _calorie_ but very low _macronutrient_ density per volume of food. That’s the problem for Crohn’s- having to eat a large amount of food that is super irritating, with fiber also blocking the absorption of nutrients.
      Crohn’s/IBD is fundamentally an immune disorder- the immune system attacks the tissues in the GI tract causing inflammation and lesions that are painful and can bleed. It can occur anywhere (or everywhere) from the mouth to the anus. When the intestines are already very _constricted_ from inflammation, lesions or scarring the fiber is very difficult and irritating to pass through. It has nothing to do with adequate fiber eating bacteria. Especially for Crohn’s in the small intestine (like me).
      I’ve been a whole food vegan for 9 years- and while helpful it’s been a struggle the whole time. The only way I could survive my current flare after losing 25 lbs and dropping below 8% body fat (unintentionally) was with elemental shakes, white rice (brown rice was too much fiber), and eventually some fish (breaking my vegan status). Now my Crohn’s is mainly in my small intestine. Perhaps people with disease that is less severe and further down in the large intestine/colon might be able to participate in the studies he mentioned and get the initial boost everyone gets when they go veg. Also there is a high percentage of people that have Crohn’s looking inflammation (that may be over diagnosed and isn’t really Crohn’s) that goes away spontaneously. I’m willing to bet good money those were most of the patients cited. But severe Crohn’s flares _can’t_ be treated with whole plant foods and IBD is not remotely like IBS from eating too much junk food- despite the correlation.

I have to juice them if raw or fresh or simmer or boil them real soft in liquid and then puree or liquify into soup if I cooked them, to be able to consume them. That's the only way the small intestines and colon was able to probably get the nutrients while being able to get the food to go threw. Then after doing that for a while, I would slowly add small sized fruits like half of cup after I consume the fresh fruits juices (not processed tho) or I was slowly add a small cup of the extra fruit whole or blended like a smoothie. Until my stomach was able to digest. I had to eat like a baby and take baby steps to keep inflammation at bay. Don't give up. IT HELP TREMENDOUSLY. Colitis Veteran here. NutritionFacts makes a good point insofar medication is not enough in many cases and a proper diet is necessary. On the other hand he tells only about one side of the coin. Legumes and onions for example are keeping down the inflammations in theory, but they are very hard for the colon to digest. The vast majority of people with colitis/crohn I know and heard of are not able to digest legumes or onions properly, which causes harm and paradoxically increases inflammation. So many are dependend on eating a measured amount of meat to cover the need for protein. But of course this meat consumption gets up the inflammations, so don't overdo it. It is a tough act of balance. I advise everyone with CID to test and protocoll diets in order to find out, which diet fits their health best individually.

    Anecdotal but me and some of my family suffer from something like IBS-D. Yeast is consistently the worst trigger, but mushrooms are almost as harmful per serving. I speculate it has more to do with the immune stimulating effects of fungus than something peculiar about yeast. I also suspect this isn't just genetic because I was able to eat mushrooms and yeast for about a year without ill effect while in remission, my son with this condition only was affected after accidental antibiotic exposure, and we all developed this disease at very different rates.
    I see why the candida fearing people blame live fungus though. The only other known triggers to us are sweets and histamine/biogenic amine rich foods. All FODMAPs are thoroughly tested and not at all harmful (except for fructose and sorbitol in amounts far less than allowed on FODMAP low diets) for any of us. Lactose intolerance is not an issue. I had the skin scratch test for common allergens and besides mold, cats, and ragweed, I'm not more allergic than the average person.
    Doing the 5/2 diet heavy with soy and potatoes on feast days and light on fruit and absent the two triggers got me in remission and I suspect it works for many others which *looks* a lot like candida eats fruit and causes infection and *looks* like candida can be starved with restrictive diets and fasting.
    Thank you for clarifying so much.

    I’m 67 years old and I just got diagnosed with Crohn’s. My doctor told me to go on low fibre diet which most vegetables and fruits are not allowed. chicken, beef, fish is ok. Which exact opposite of what this video is saying. I’m very confused now what to do.

      If you look at the global map, "westernized" countries like UK, USA, Canada, AU etc...all have the highest incidence of Crohn's. What do WE have that other countries don't have? Yes, processed foods...but what else?
      Here's a hint: Almost 30% of Crohn's disease patients have a non-celiac gluten sensitivity. I am not here to replace pro medical advice, but in my research, gluten seems to provide the biggest catalyst for a large number of health conditions.
      Off that topic, I wouldn't take anything they say on these vegan-centric videos very seriously. I developed post infectious IBS after getting C diff, and I could never follow this diet. Also, look at Hyphal Wall protein 1, (HWP1)...

    I have crohn's. I was on imfiximab I'm now on vendulizimab. I was warned against vegetables. Ii don't know how that can be healthy. I was moved on to a stoma bag after a foot long stricture was removed. The stoma is removed. I still have 10cm of inflamation. I was told to avoid fiber. I did however get great results eating something called Huel I noticed inflamation dropped it contains some sunflour oil tho.

    Sorry Dr. Gregor. This is kinda absurd and shows your lack of clinical experience. I question how many of the patients cited were over-diagnosed. With most Crohn's flares you can't handle fiber and you are unable to absorb nutrients properly. Sure junk food, red meat, dairy, etc are trigger foods. But treating a Crohn's flare with fibrous low macro nutrient density foods is basically impossible and frankly inhumane torture. I'm not the only one that has also struggled with a whole food vegan diet- even for maintenance in between flares. The reason why GI docs talk about elemental diets, exclusionary diets, and modified Mediterranean for Crohn's (and not whole food vegan) - is because that's what the research shows helps - and what makes sense when the intestines are very constricted from inflammation, bloody lesions, and scarring and can't absorb nutrients properly.

    • @Julottt
      @Julottt 3 года назад +2

      Fiberless foods will decreases your symptoms of gut irritation but wont improve the problem at all and will make it worse because it will increases inflammation and disrupt the microbiome, dairy(worst aged cheese) and eggs are high in sulfur, the worst.
      More details of the protocol by Pamela Popper on the link below, "high carb health" channel and site have a similar very successful similar protocol with hundred of testimonies on their channel.

      @@Julottt Since you're posting this a 2nd time I'll respond here as well. I’ve heard Popper describe her protocol in a lecture. (probably the video you posted?) In it she mischaracterized/misunderstood the elemental diet and then went on to describe her alternative protocol that begins with brown rice. I tried it during my last flare and it was far too painful and impossible to continue. I think her anecdotal success comes from ignoring/excluding/discounting patients that drop off.
      Potatoes, sweet potatoes, squash, cooked vegetables etc were also far too painful. There was absolutely no way I could survive on these healthy foods, especially for 3-6 months, and after wasting away with severe weight loss! The abnormal diseased tissues caused gut dysbiosis so with elevated candida, etc I wasn’t about to lean heavily on ripe fruit for calories. That would absolutely make everything worse!
      Also keep in mind I was a whole food vegan for 9 years prior. As much as I value what these docs are doing, and I think everyone owes it to themselves to eat this way, I think they are ideologues that are out of their depth on Crohn’s who are cherry picking results from mild cases (that might even be misdiagnosed). Sorry. It’s a very powerful diet that helps most- but not a panacea. Her protocol seems like quackery to me.
      A certain amount of bowel rest can be very valuable. But yes too much bowel rest is harmful.

      @Julottt 3 года назад

      @@Gt3ch I'll paste the same reply here too so people can read and make their opinions on this:
      I agree on brown rice, bad idea or only for the least serious case of IBD, half milled rice is fine(because need fiber to feed the microbiome, white rice is useless except in big flare), still you didnt try this protocol for months (or the better one from "high carb health" guys)so you cant know if it would work and of course you could survive on these foods only easily since SpudFit got healthier on a diet made only of potatoes for a year, this diet could be followed for life and be very healthy with B12 supplement.
      There are 100+ testimonies of success on the "high carb health" channel, including very serious cases, more than 90% success.

    • @Gt3ch
      @Gt3ch 3 года назад +3

      @@Julottt Again I was a whole food vegan for 9 years prior to the worst flare of my life. I couldn’t follow it for the full duration BECAUSE IT WASN'T POSSIBLE!
      At my last appt with an IBD specialist he told me that inflammation, esp with lesions, seen with colonoscopy in the ileum is Crohn’s by definition. Docs aren’t wrong to diagnose it. HOWEVER, something like 4/5 of the time it spontaneously goes away in 6 months to a year- regardless of diet- and by definition that means it actually ISN’T the immune disorder Crohn’s/IBD. Something else caused the inflammation- and he went over a list of things to screen for that none of my other GI docs mentioned over the last 30 years. I’ll bet good money most of these cases fall into that category. They are misdiagnosed even with convincing evidence.

      @@Gt3ch Whole food plant based is not enough in some cases, for exemple nutritional/baker yeast gluten/wheat should be avoided like plague, high/protein fat is not good neither for the microbiome, it is not everything about diet for sure in some case, there are others factors, mercury amalgams and others.

Carnivore is the best way to go for Crohn's or any inflammatory condition, I was plant based for 5 yrs and felt horrible and had to supplement so many vitamins, j switched to carnivore and guess what 90 days later I am in remission and off all meds, how can vegan diet be good when u have to take a handful of supplements to get healthy it's absurd
