- Marc-André Leclerc climbs alone, far from the limelight. On remote alpine faces, the free-spirited 23-year-old Canadian makes some of the boldest solo ascents in history. Yet, he draws scant attention. With no cameras, no rope, and no margin for error, Leclerc's approach is the essence of solo adventure. Nomadic and publicity shy, he doesn’t own a phone or car, and is reluctant to let a film crew in on his pure vision of climbing. Veteran filmmaker Peter Mortimer (THE DAWN WALL) sets out to make a film about Leclerc but struggles to keep up with his elusive subject. Then, Leclerc embarks on a historic adventure in Patagonia that will redefine what is possible in solo climbing.
This is an astonishing film. You start out questioning Mark-André's choices in life; by the end you are questioning your own.

@@geoff4705 I could make a long winded explanation, but the bottom line is people have been justifying their choices to themselves and other people since the inception of choices. Everybody wants their choices to mean something beyond just another life choice. They find something they truly enjoy doing and fabricate some kind of BS meaning beyond what it really is in order to justify their obsession with it. People like yourself fall for it and start questioning their own life choices. It's really that simple.

I went to high school with Marc. Watching this film was surreal for me to see what he accomplished in such jaw-dropping fashion, remembering the kid I grew up with getting into trouble n such. You'd never see him without a smile on his face. RIP my brother

I almost never write reviews, but this movie was incredible and so was Marc-Andre. I truly am sorry to hear about his passing, not only would I have loved to watch more of his awe-inspiring climbs, but he seemed like an authentic and kind human who positively impacted the lives of those around him. RIP.

One of the best documentaries I have ever watched. Marc was a certified legend. RIP champ.
One thing I want to mention about this film is the relationship between Brette and Marc. They were so in love. The scene where Marc is bivvying during his climb in Patagonia and he records a video message for Brette. The love was palpable and oh so sweet. It broke my heart to watch this film. I think he lived the life he wanted to live and I love that for him, but I hate that he had to die. Also, what a beautiful person his mom is as well.
My feelings to. We live in a physical world.. his love for Brett, and her love for Marc was almost child-like but pure and very advanced...most of us never get there. Beautiful to watch
She was a badass too. Cool couple.
We are drawn to people who are living life doing what they were born to do. They make us take a look at our own lives and ponder what our purpose is. Even the small moments in the film were so impactful like Marc Andre hula hooping with Hevy Duty and the young boy who was so drawn to Marc Andre in Patagonia as it showed how his positive energy was shared with those around him. The world needs more people like MA.

watched this on netflix, i have been trying to shove it down peoples throats since. This man deserves to be known world wide, his outlook on life is astonishig. i usually don't watch stuff like this but i was super stoned and up very late and decided why not? i was completely moved by his story and who he was as a person. finding out he passed away is honestly heartbreaking this man was a genuine person and a badass!

This doc moved me so much.. I fell in love with Marc-Andre and his passion, I laughed, cheered, was on the edge of my seat and bawled like a baby.
Marc-Andre was the Jimi Hendrix of climbing it seems.. but man the way he lives and how wise he is for his age is unbelievably awesome.

Marc-André Leclerc climbs in the elevated moment between life and death, where every seconds lead to the hyper realization of ones existence! Without this documentary, no one outside the tiny elite group of alpinists would know who this 23yrs old is.
What Marc accomplished from pure enjoyment awe, shock and shiver the climbing community into immortalizing him as a true legend!
Every human on earth needs and must watch this. Never even knew who he was but he’s left a mark on my soul and I thank you for that! Night sounds weird but I believe he’s a god in a human body. Rip brotha.
He did what he did for nobody except himself. The true definition of chasing your dreams. What to be learned from this is the human potential and capabilities when you are chasing things for the right reasons. Absolutely inspirational. Can only strive to reach this level of self fulfillment

How these movies don’t win every cinematography award and how this kid isn’t known is beyond me. My eyes were closed for half this movie. I don’t even understand where he gets the courage and strength to do these climbs. Utterly amazing.

he was actually just kind of suicidal, think of a race car driver who never hit the brakes, not on turns, or snow, or rain yeah it would look cool but obviously the wreck is coming
@@tmazer99505 yes in the film it was actually mentioned that around 50% of free solo climbers end up dying. And he was the most extreme of all of them so death was probably something he had come to terms with knowing that it would inevitably happen at some time. He explained about eating his meal before he climbed a challenging route he always appreciated that it could possibly be his last and as such he treasured every moment. It is a truly incredible and yet crazy mindset, living life to the extreme and smiling at death just waiting for it to arrive.
I sat. Quiet... for at least 30 minutes after watching this film. I had to sit in the emotions because they were so intense. I couldn't move or speak. There's really nothing I can say that would do it justice. Just watch it.
This is one of the best doco’s I’ve seen. Talent, athletic ability, focus, drive, and a mindset that I’m not sure anyone could truly understand. Amazing human.
I rewatch this all the time to remind myself to live life to the fullest and do things because I want to, not because I want others to know I did them. Highly recommend this film. Thanks Marc🕊
I only came across this film a couple of days ago by chance and so glad I did, Some people are only put on this earth for a short while, but what they achieve gets remembered for a lifetime, Mark Andre Leclerc was definitely one of those people, A maverick and a free spirit who died pushing the boundaries and doing what he loved.

Oh man, I remember when he was just a young kid weighing in on Cascadeclimbers forum. He was maybe 15, and asking smart questions in a really sincere way, that could almost make one think he was a troll. Then he started posting some trip reports. It was hard to fathom what this young kid was getting up to. Gradually, I - we - realised that, good God, he was a singularity in the world of alpinism. RIP.

@@mark_9019 His username was 'Cheamclimber'. There were some really good climbers posting on that forum, such as Colin Haley, but when this ultra sincere-sounding young kid started posting trip reports ... mind-blowing. To say the least. Again, RIP.

@@marcuslinton310 Most people live their lives following what society has defined as a way of living - go to school, get a job, start a family, and so on. It’s not wrong, but we often wonder if there’s a greater meaning in our lives. But then we don’t have enough courage or will to further explore and pursue it. This is why this movie is so inspiring because this guy was living his life to its fullest, enjoying every single moment without any regret even though the price could be life itself. To each their own though

Most people have to earn a living, they don't get money handed to them freely to go indulge their passions.

this was literally me and my mom watching this. We were so attached to Marc and had no prior knowledge about him before watching. When we found out he passed you could hear a pin drop. The fact that his body was never recovered either was even worse. We were sobbing so hard cause we just wanted to see him succeed that climb. RIP
Not that this film needs any more praise, but I can't resist sharing how powerful this film is both on the surface and deep within the interior life of each participant. A good film makes you see the world differently, and now thank God, I do! Thank you for sharing your talents and passions with the world.

Free solo climbers really are just a breed all their own. They are simultaneously out of their damn kinds, while also being cool calm and collected, and a massive inspiration, showing people that we are capable of wonderous things if we put the work in.
Quite the opposite. It only demonstrates what certain people are capable of. Majority of people are not capable of doing anything close to what he did no matter how hard they try. Like everyone else in life, he discovered what he was good at and pursued it. Just like people who excel at singing and playing instruments. Everyone is different and majority of people aren't capable of excelling at lot of things.

After watching this I feel like Marc-André was on a mission from the heavens to inspire humanity to be bold and humble. The timing, and even just the discovery of this person, by the film makers is truly a gift that I am grateful. I hope to never forget this story.

I watched the documentary. I like and appreciate how in a manner of speaking Marc expressed to the film crew by soloing Emperor Face that it wasn't about them. The climber so humble and the filmers frustrated egos bruised. There faces made me laugh because they can not understand that its not about them. Or us for that matter. "It wouldn't be a solo to me if someone was there." Bravo Marc.
I am sitting here watching👀 this documentary right now as I'm typing this. I just paused it to do a YT search on Marc-Andre and I found this. It was just released on Netflix today I believe and I am only 27 mins into it and I am SPEECHLESS🤐!!! This lad is unlike anyone or anything I've EVER seen😳!!! I'm not even a climber but watching this . . . the word SPECTACULAR doesn't even begin to describe this lad!!! This is an ABSOLUTE MUST WATCH!!!! Excuse me as I continue to watch the remaining hour of this UNBELIEVABLE documentary!!!
It appears you didn’t know what was to come in the doc, neither did I. Just like you, I had the urge to pause the movie like halfway through to tell someone just how incredible it is. I’m seriously shook by who he was and what he did. Unreal.
Just got done watching this film. Very humbled.......must say I definitely was one of these typical no sympathy guys, "if you fall?oh well your fault!"
But my view, not just on climbing but life in general has changed thanks to this young man. Thank you Marc.

super thoughtful, energizing movie, I was surprised by how well made it was, mind-bending cinematography, kudos, but more than that, Marc's spirit, the idea that "today is a good day to die" really was a thing for him. I did not know his fate at the beginning of the movie, but I know about winter alpine climbing and I knew that, no matter his genius skill, it was a matter of time. But, here's the thing, this was a movie of celebration and one powerful illustration of how we push ourselves into the world, even knowing we will leave it.
SPOILER ALERT!!!! just watched this film in Netflix tonight. it was so amazing until the last 10 minutes, I really didn't prepare for his sudden stop in life. I knew that sooner or later, at some point of time, that could happen to him, as long as he kept climbing. But I didn't expect it came so fast, so soon. He's like a meteor, lighting up the darkness of the sky. He quickly ran through the world, burning, with the brilliant light. Most of us, living a normal life, day after day, generation after generation. We are the night sky, massive, unnoticeable background. But we do admire the stars, and the meteors. They lighten up our world, show us some of the basic meaning of life.

I kind of anticipated the end when at one point everyone was talking about how dangerous it was. In a way I guess the film crew saw this coming. They probably just didn’t anticipate it this quickly.

This is a truly great documentary that deserves to be watched by anyone who cares about their role in the world. This is definitely not just about a climber and climbing but a great deal more than that. I hope their efforts are rewarded at the Oscars as this is the best documentary I have seen for a number of years.

It's not a just a documentary about climbing in the mountains...it's a philosophical journey...shall we overcame fear to reach for our dreams, or should fear keep us a little bit safer?...and how much fear make our lifes worth living..?..these all are personal questions, but I'm sure that most people would envy what Marc experienced in his short & full life...
So much better than Free Solo. The dude isn't a robot, takes way more insane risks, and doesn't leave the movie with a story that will likely get kids to attempt what he's trying and die as well. How this didn't get more awards is baffling.
I was starting to think the full length movie would not happen. Glad it is. I can see one of his solos from the porch, and it always makes me wonder what he still might have done. Huge inspiration.
The film is astonishing. Great storytelling. I didn't know about Marc and I was absolutely inspired by his genuine personality, pure passion and fearless vision. I'll carry it with me.
If you are planning just make this documentary your first priority. It is worth watching.

Absolutely amazing documentary! This is a beautiful example of why people should be left alone to do what they love without cameras being shoved in their face....not for fame and fortune but because it's their personal and fullfilling want, not everyone else's need to see it.
This film captures a soul so genuine, pure and authetic that it makes you question your on day-to-day existence. RIP Marc Andre, you died just as you dreamed, to go out as a icon in your field. You are now immortal.

I'm glad this story was told, even though Marc didn't want all his climbs documented. He climbed for himself to have the adventure, not to prove anything to anybody. I can respect that, while also understanding he was an incredible climber.
What a documentary..well done!! Marc seems to be a special person..we need to celebrate his achievements and acknowledge that this is how he wanted it to live his life..
I watch all these amazing climbing documentaries...all the climbers are never cease to blow my mind with their lifestyle and what they accomplish. However ..This film shows us a climber with a unique free spirit even more wild than the greatest climbers of the world, which is almost like seeing an archetype of a new type of truly free human being that is showing how we can be great without getting attached to greatness or survival for the sake of survival

I went to the theater to watch this when it came out. Granted it was the early showing, but no one else was there. Had it all to myself for this very inspirational life story.
quality over quantity...Marc may have died doing what he LOVED most in the world at age 25 ...but he lived a lifetime of adventures during that time and REALLY experienced what life has to offer much more than most people alive today. These videos & tribute to Marc will go on and inspire other people not just those love to climb but everyone. In that sense, he is still with us.
Watching him climb like that scared me more than any horror movie in years. He lived a life that's for sure.
Marc and I were close friends way back in middle school for a while, we grew apart but this is really cool to see. RIP Marc

The first time I saw this I thought marc André Leclerc was in his mid-30s. As a mountaineer myself, I remember feeling tears coming down my eyes. Near the end of the film, I realized he was only 25 years old, and would've been 30 this year. I was born in 1992 only 94 days older than him. Such an amazing Human

I’ve watched this movie probably 20 times. You’re nothing short of amazing Marc Andre Leclerc
It's hard to say something about this man that doesn't sound wrong. Well, it is a movie about Marc-Andres life story that ends tragically. Like Mozart he got the touch of the divine and got a glimpse of experiencing things that are by all means impossible. But it was also his curse for he had to do did things that would inevitably kill him. I'm not judging him nor do I want to be like him. In fact the one thing that impressed me was that he insisted to climb completely alone, and literally ran off so no one could witness his climbs. That means one of the best climbers of all time did some of the greatest climbs of humanity completely in secret. That's such small, powerful concept and holds magic and beauty that maybe only Japanese Samurai could understand.
I think in principle he knew what was coming for him, but he was optimistic that he would have more time. There have been others like him (eg Mishima) that spoke of being fully alive for the present moment is more important than a very long life. Maybe that's a sort of a psychological disorder for some people but for a truly spiritual person who is willing to go beyond all bounds this is also extremely beautiful and satisfying. If I had to describe it I would say he turned his life and death into a great work of art, that would make future people wonder for all time what he actually did. And perhaps it made him so happy because he knew that he could really do it. Anyone who deliberately risks his life (like race drivers) plays with the same fire only with better odds. It feels so much better to be alive when you just escaped death one more time that for some people it becomes all that matters.

Fantastic movie that pulled on every emotion. Marc-André Leclerc shows us all what it looks like to life on your terms. I wish I had that kind of courage.

Marc-André is mankind's ambassador to the mountains and the mountains allowed him to climb them because of his reverence for the craft. And I say this knowing jack about climbing, but even I get "it". That's what a good ambassador of anything does...he/she represents the best of those who sent them. He deserved his awesomeness.

@@gabrieljohannson6777 He died from an avalanche/ice fall with his partner Ryan Johnson in 2018 after climbing a new route on the Mendenhall tower in Alaska, out of all his climbs the one where he was with a partner and using safety gear was the one he lost his life to

Just finished watching the movie what an amazing guy he was . He did some truly amazing things and some even more amazing things we will probably never know about.
People like Marc are extremely rare - a quote comes to mind: "It is an apparition from that mysterious shadow world beyond nature, that final world, which contains - if anything contains - the explanation of men and catfish and green leaves." He was one of those from "...that mysterious shadow world..." that we mere mortals will never fully comprehend. Climb on, Marc, wherever you may be.
No matter how good you are, nature finds a way and the odds catch up to you. Rest in peace dear sir.
Alex Honnold free soloed for over a decade and survived. He is now retiring moreso from free soloing. So I think it's safe to say it can be fine.

Somehow I came across this movie poster, didn’t go through any reviews google or trailer or recommendations like I usually do, but simply downloaded and watched. I had no idea about the movie and as I was going through the movie, I was gonna come to RUclips, comment in the trailer of the movie requesting him to visit Bhutan, a Himalayan country, which has by far my standards one of the greatest heavenly mountains on earth for him to explore. What can I say, a legend in making gone too soon. It will forever be a wish which won’t be fulfilled, but I hope, you are enjoying the mountains at other side of life too❤.
I'm watching this film in total amazement. There is one question I keep asking myself climbing all these dangerous faces. Once you get to the top, how are they getting down??? They don't talk about that.
Good question. I asked myself the same. I understand they will either walk down the less steep side of a mountain or rapel down with a rope the way they ascented. On some mountains it might be possible to be picked up by helicopter.
Mix of down climbing and rappelling, but mostly rappelling. Marc has written a few blog posts detailing how he climbed mt. Robson and torre eiger including how he descended. You never get picked up by a helicopter.

I am always torn between the pursuit of something so spiritual for a person like Leclerc and the pain felt by those who loved them and are left behind when the inevitable happens. That's a measure of selfishness I don't understand. It's difficult not to be judgmental but I realize I have never been so driven seeking an experience as to risk everything time and time again. All I can say is that he had decades of life ahead of him, and that is an unspeakable loss.
We spend a ton of time in the back country in the wintertime and I have come to realize that the mountains are remarkably forgiving, until they are not. One can only take so much risk until a price will be paid.

I was not even half way through the film when i asked out loud 'how is this guy even alive'. Living at a pace that couldn't be sustained. Risk is what keeps people in check in all aspects of life. You blow those stops enough and eventually you have to pay. This life was lived to the extreme.
