One thing about Shiver and the Binder you mentioned. There's a traditional form of binding a chest in japan that both men and women have did called "Sarashi". It was done by Samurai to resist injury and woman when wearing a Kimono to present a slender figure. I heard from some friends it was sometimes used as basically a Bra. I wouldn't really call it a Binder personally but it certainly can be used as one. Just thought this trivia was neat and wanted to share it. Have fun with Splatoon 3!
@@productionscrub8476 Yeah. That's true. I just wanted to share a fun fact and didn't consider if people would actually try this without doing their own research.
@@productionscrub8476 I think that's with the elastic medical bandages that are bad but it's safe with bandages that have no elasticity at all and can be used like strips of clothed wrappings iirc.
As someone who spent several years denying their gender because of assuming that people would "just know" they are trans/NB, I feel like it's important to note that not all trans/NB people are immediately aware of their gender (or lack thereof). If you are questioning your relationship with gender, it's is important to do research on gender and identities to best understand yourself
Strong second! I assumed as much for many years because I had only been aware of one very rigid definition of what gender dysphoria is, and things I have said while 100% believing I was cis include "My quality of life would be better if my body was on a 24-hour hormone cycle instead of a monthly one" and "Having boobs sucks low-key, not really worth it you lucky you don't gotta deal with that shit" (to a cis man) and "pregnancy is a body horror nightmare. Even if abortions were free and easy I'd rather die than know that I have been pregnant" (and knew I wouldn't have kids since I was four 0_o) and I thought that since the bleeding part of my cycle didn't cause major trauma it couldn't possibly make me dysphoric (even though that's the half of the month I function worse and find it almost impossible to bathe regularly) Plus I have almost never been able to self-inserting in media as female, and unless I'd made a character as close as possible to my physical body, I always choose male avatars in games Mostly I just wanna put it out there that if you have random unexplained depersonalization/derealization symptoms that you just can't quite put your finger on the cause, that could be a way gender dysphoria presents (please excuse my decompression rant, I found out last week and I should have realized a long long time ago ):
Strong third, generally you should just play around with presentation and find what feels the most correct, or realise that all of it kinda sucks (like I did) and just live in constant confusion that people do have any inherent meaning of what gender even is, come to terms with the fact that you kinda exist outside of all that, and just be a happy lil person that no one knows understands just by being looking at :D
9:02 Actually Shiver is wearing a sarashi, not a binder. Sarashi is a piece of cloth that's traditionally used when you are going to wear some type of traditional japanese clothing. Nowadays using a Sarashi that's exposed it's usually associated with criminal or rebellious characters.
@Aburner1109 yeah they really did an order vs chaos splatfest and expected the *playerbase of splatoon* to have an even split. Like, what the fuck would an order themed splatoon game even be??? (also sidenote, I'm fighting for present in the upcoming past/present/future shebang because I feel it's the philosophically correct choice, but I think they added the squid sisters sponsoring team past so it's not just the 15 people who want more single player lore next game on that team lol)
Slight side note about Shiver, so far the only person who has said that Shiver is female is an SVP of Nintendo of America, named Nate Bihldorf. The significance of it being him specifically is that he was also on the team responsible for censoring that Vivian the witch in a PURPLE dress from Paper Mario is trans-femme in the NA English localizations
i think we'll just wait for the game to come out, and for somebody to read and translate the Japanese text to read the original message and the idea accompanying
@@ASHtheSLUGCAT we don't **need** representation, but it's, like, nice to have, yknow? cis peeps might not get excited about representation, but that's cause they have always had it. they don't really know how it feels to have little to no representation in media. we get excited about stuff like this, because we're finally getting *something*
Undertale and Deltarune is an odd example because there's actually some debate in the games' fandom over whether the human characters are meant to be gender-ambiguous blank slates or if they are specifically intended to be nonbinary. Proponents for the latter note how these characters start off seeming like standard silent protagonists to project onto, but are later revealed to have their own distinct personality traits and thoughts, so them being nonbinary would serve as a *subversion* of gender-ambiguous blank slates.
For kris specifically I feel like we can say they use they/them pronouns atleast, because unlike frisk their life before we see them isnt ambiguous. Kris is their own person and everyone in the world that has known them for a while refers to them as such, they're only a "blank slate protagonist" after we take over as we see their save file being overwritten by our own
@@Hario338 Agreed. With Undertale the blank slate debate is understandable and more of a side thing; with Deltarune it feels like Kris being a subversion of blank slate protagonists is the whole point. The game isn't subtle about it. I've had debates with people with other viewpoints and their arguments always got a bit absurd once all the evidence was laid out.
I believe Toby Fox actually corrected people who use pronouns other than they/them (usually he/him, I wonder why...) so I think it's safe to say they're definitively nb, however for Frisk, I'd say it's a bit more ambiguous whether they're ambiguous or non binary
@@Trashley652 or maybe hes just cashing in on a rabid fanbase by going along with it ive learned if you make a game and put a rainbow flag in it and pretend to have pronouns the lgbt fanbase you amass will literally lick your arse clean the worlds best selling bible app was made by a atheist lol
I feel like Apex does diversity in general perfectly. Just like you said near the end of the video, their characters that are part of the LGBTQ community or a minority are never shown off for their gender, sexuality or race. Hell I didn't even know a lot of the characters were gay or non-binary until I looked it up. But the fact I loved the characters without knowing shows that the representation was done right and wasn't something they they used as leverage to improve their character. Just my two cents.
This, wholeheartedly, is how it should be done. Make a good character and then don't label them. Let people find out themselves through the character's actions, dialogue, etc. If you want to normalize that sort of identity or group, you cannot make them standout as being different.
@@bentowers3614 Hmmm. I take issue with this approach. While it's of course good for characters to be fully fleshed out despite their identities, pretending like you're not allowed to openly acknowledge or focus on their identity isn't really the solution imo. The truth is, the groups you're referring to ARE different. And accepting that doesn't immediately make the story bad. It's possible to have good characters whilst also not letting their identities get sidelined. This kind of logic completely erases the possibility of having stories solely focused on the identities of marginalized people. These stories are valuable because they remind us of the very real differences that exist between folks of different racial/sexual/gender identities. Not every story needs to do this obviously but simply saying we should just make no effort to acknowledge the differences doesn't really help.
To me that's the issue though. For me, personally, I think Apex simply overdoes it. Putting representation in is fine, but does a game with like 25 characters need a non-binary, a trans, an autistic, an ADHD, a gay, a lesbian, a pansexual, a bisexual, an unsure, another lesbian, and a near perfect 50/50 split in gender all at once? If the idea is realistically representing people, it's not right. And why does the one Indian character need to look and sound stereotypically Indian if they're half British? Why are they British and Indian at all if humanity has been mingling in spaceships and on other planets? Are the ships racially segregated? Apex clearly does it for brownie points and I think it's far too obvious to seem genuine anymore. I'm not a fucking medal to be put on a wall of virtue signalling, I don't even necessarily want to be represented a lot. It's marketing. To clarify, I don't think the Devs necessarily don't mean it, but at the end of the day the person approving these changes is running a business and that business is to sell in-game purchases to as many people as possible. I just want a game that's fun. Make all the characters straight for all I care, I don't give a shit as long as the gameplay is enjoyable.
@@bromo8874 I think what they was getting at is just don’t make it everything they are. Like it’s their personality, character development and or reason for being is lbgtq. I also see what you are saying to though so I don’t know lol
Fr, it’s annoying when movies & shows got nothing to offer but fill it with extremely gay/trans/whatever with flashy very LGBT-themed outfits like it’s the pride parade outside. I’m getting tired of it.. you’re here to watch a movie, not a “day in the life of an oppressed minority” documentary. TED-ed did enough of those.
Another thing to note is that non binary people can still use he/him or she/her pronouns, or they can have multiple sets of pronouns they're ok with. So English Kirby could still be nb, just using he/him pronouns.
@@elnkianni3466 Gender isn't about the titles. It's about identifying the self, which can be done in an unlimitted amount of ways. Expression and titles(names, pronouns, etc) can be factors in how one identifies themselves, but neither of those are requirements to any degree, and because of that everyones experience may differ. That goes for Cisgender, transgender, non-binary and whatever identities. So the "point" is to do whatever you do that helps you identify yourself. The labels are there to help us, not keep us boxed in.
Honestly Shiver's situation is bizarre because you could make the argument that her being confirmed as cis is yet another way Nintendo of America isn't being true to the original Splatoon localizations. The person that deconfirmed Shiver as some brand of non-binary was just one guy, and allegedy some people have gotten replies from other NoA representatives that claim Shiver IS meant to be non-binary. It might just be me coping but it's weird that every single localization (barring Portuguese) went out of its way to never refer to Shiver with pronouns or gendered language in her introduction, even in languages like French or Spanish where you REALLY have to put in work to refer to someone with gender ambiguity. If the intent was to always keep her cis all that effort just seems misplaced (and a tad queerbaity.) All in all though Shiver would look good in purple, I wonder how splatfest colors will look on her.
I can't explain why her gender was never confirmed in any of the translations but I've been under the impression that all the idols and agents were canon females so I just kinda assumed most people would think Shiver would be female. I guess Big Man breaks that streak but he's more of a mascot than an idol.
@@suwuicidal nah, it’s a trio, Big Man even has his own team; and Big Man is the first male idol, He’s making waves. Put some respect on Big Man’s name
As much as I would've loved Shiver being an enby character, it was to be expected that Nintendo wouldn't commit to the idea, I do have to say that the fact that pronoun usage being avoided in tons of languages might've been a bit 'sus', but maybe it was our own fault and we maybe looked a bit too much into it, building tons of expectations and then blaming Nintendo -but can we really blame ourselves? representation is lacking, and we are starving..
@@jellopuffy2974 This likely the case. I looked back at the introductions we received for the other idols, and in their own self introducing dialogue, they rarely used pronouns either. The introduction we received in the direct for Deep Cut, all three of them avoided pronouns. Does that mean Frye and Big Man are non-binary? Why is it only Shiver? People are just looking way too into it to find scraps that aren't there. Honestly, the best way to properly represent non-binary types in games is to never call them non-binary. Just have them be a normal, honest-to-goodness, character like any other. Write their actions and dialogue to let the viewer decide on their non-binarinism, as opposed to forcing it out of a misguided desire to appease a mass that rarely touches that media to begin with.
Kris from Deltarune is def nonbinary, because a major point of that games plot is how Kris is their own person, and we as the player are taking control. So all the other characters referring to Kris with they/them pronouns is definitely because those are the pronouns Kris uses, and not because they are meant to be a blank slate character. Purple
the whole lancer fanclub/fun gang/whatever you call them goofy trio of heroes are literally made of gender defying characters, why would it not include the edgy nonbinary kid?
@@ZeusMakesDoodles yes this, along with other things that point to it, show how we as the player are controlling Kris during the game as the soul. Which is why its obvious that Kris uses they/them pronouns due to everyone using those for Kris. You should not use he/him pronouns when referring to Kris as those are the wrong ones
A game that has non binary characters would be one called Gnosia, a social deduction game that has two of them. It's a game that works kind of like the usual werewolf or mafia games but it's set in space, got a cool cast and a wacky story.
@@otherlego ... yeah, pretty much. RNG decides which characters you see in each playthrough, and who are gnosia, beings that disguise themselves as humans and feel compelled to kill humans. Which could potentially include you. The whole game takes place in a spaceship, the goal is to get rid of the gnosia, if you're a human, or eradicate humans if you're a gnosia. Aside from that, it works like a basic Social Deduction Game, other than the fact that everyone else is an NPC. You discuss during the day who to send to cryosleep, and during the night you can talk to people to form alliances or confirm suspicions. Once that's done, anyone with a special role uses their special action, and it's on to the next day, with at least one new corpse. Rinse and Repeat.
Random things to note as a person who obsesses over the Xenoblade series: Xenoblade 2 did also have a seemingly nonbinary character in the form of Roc. Much like Juniper, Roc being neither male nor female is backed up by in-game gender values (which for Roc is set to the number 4). Unfortunately Roc gets barely any focus, let alone character development (because the Blade System leads to bland, one-note characters that can't do anything outside of their Drivers) but hey, at least Roc isn't a walking stereotype. Roc is Roc. Always has been; always will be.
Pokemon's adamancy on making sure the protagonists have gender has been weird to me, especially in Scarlet and Violet. They wear the same outfit and there isn't a rival with the other protagonist whether yours is wearing orange or purple, but they make sure you know that there are two of them and one is a *boy* and the other is a *girl* .
The whole world and it's history does not revolve around gender neutrality. Gender is also a fairly new word and concept so it's no surprise why they'd never bother with it.
I'm sure that Pokemon will include non-binary characters as soon as they figure out how to exploit them for profit (the only driving force in the capitalist machine).
I'm also an enby, and seeing a list of enbies in video games is validating. Kirby and Testament are my favorites on this list. My favorite color is Cyan, specifically aquamarine, but Purple, specifically lavender, is my second favorite color
Speaking of purple, really happy that you mentioned Floofy from Bugsnax!! They're one of my fav examples of enby representation ^ ^ None of the other characters take their gender into question or misgender them. It's treated as completely normal and it's great! Plus, I love that they're just kinda problematic. Non-binary characters can be a little mean. As a treat
In the claw machine that is the gaming industry, you don't get too many gender queer characters per pull. It's nice to see that highlighted and commentated on, especially by professional RUclipsr and home invader Captain Astronaut.
As a nonbinary person myself this video was a really enjoyable watch! It’s interesting seeing a lot of characters and series which I grew up with and love show up here as well, makes me wonder how it took me this long to figure this stuff out sometimes… Speaking of, Kirby is a pretty important character to me due to nostalgia and also partly because of their gender ambiguity. When most people think of Kirby they don’t focus on his gender - they just think it’s Kirby! Everyone’s favourite lil puffball. Even if most people predominantly use he/him for him due to him being presented as male in the west, that’s not what people focus on. The reason I realised I was nonbinary is because I didn’t want to be seen as male or female; I wanted to be seen as me. So in a way Kirby means a lot to me cause of stuff like that (and also many other reasons)! It’s like with the colour purple - that colour hasn’t been assigned a gender with it, it’s just purple :) I could honestly go on about a lot of the characters mentioned here, Kirby, testament, Juniper - they all mean so much to me because they’re representation done in an authenticate way. Even if Shiver is confirmed female seeing her still makes me happy because we’re starting to see more nonbinary figures in media slowly come out, especially in splatoon 3 and animal crossing where the idea is obviously there. We’ve got a long way to go, but even the small rep makes me happy. I know it would make younger me inexplicably happy too, just like Kirby did.
It’s late where I am and I’m tired so I rambled a bit, but I did want to say that people can obviously be male or female and still be seen as them. Just for me, being seen as myself is not being put into the binary categories of male or female. To others, that category is them, and being perceived that way means they feel like who they truly are.
@@skulllatte3352 Adding to this, our idea of a middle ground between masculine and feminine is subjective and flawed. 'Neutral' designs will often just be masculine-lite (eg. Kris) because we treat that as default. Other ways of designing characters to look neutral, mixing masculine and feminine traits, can still skew one way or the other to most audience members depending on what they focus on. Basically, discounting an enby character (or person!) because they look more male or female, or present more masculinely or femininely, is silly. There's no obvious, consistent middle.
@@DarthSion6987 here's the thing darth sion notice how few of these games are actually about gender and representation and how many of them are praised for good plot and characters or are widely beloved? glad you found something to be mad about though
Love the video astro! As a purple-loving nonbinary person, seeing other enbies in video games/media is always *chefs kiss* Even better when they just simply exist and their identity isnt especially important because i also just exist and there's more to me than my gender.
tbh I'm not really too bothered by Shiver not being nb, I'm just happy we got to get a good androgynous woman design that isn't just "kinda buff girl in a grey tanktop with a goofy ahh haircut" again
Purple is genuinely my favorite color because society hasn't declared it masculine or feminine: it is the color of royalty. As someone studying game development, character customization can be difficult if gender options (or lack there of) are attempted to be retroactively made fluid. However, developing from the ground up with fluidity in mind can save a lot of hassle in the long run regardless, so long as there are accommodations for customizable traits (sliders are a blessing). Respect game dev's declarations of character's gender & sexuality. I know it's not directly related to non-binary characters, but Bridget. Testament was a straight-forward and well-done evolution of the character from He/Him to They/Them. Conversely, Bridget went from being born He/Him to dressed and conformed to She/Her, to actively defying said conformity by declaring themselves as He/Him, before later re-actualizing their identity as She/Her. It's a journey that many transgender & genderfluid/non-binary have struggled with, which is overall positive representation. Where it gets muddy is when translations have been used as evidence against their identity, the canonicity of endings, and people clinging to wanting Bridget to be a femboy. End of the day: Testament is Testament, whose hobbies include: Fashion magazines, DIY, collecting makeup, plastic modeling (esp. giant robots), sightseeing, fishing, pottery, river trekking, road biking, appreciating opera, weight training, fortune-telling, bonsai, gardening, watching wrestling, baking, mahjong, painting (not well), embroidery, mountain climbing, nail art, golfing, star-gazing, touring hot springs, board games, writing sci-fi novels, barbecue, belly dance, beach volleyball, watching baseball, making dollhouses, liquor (they're a non-drinker), snowboarding, watching shark B-movies, collecting occult trinkets, and scrapbooks, who also so happens to go by They/Them. And Bridget is Bridget (who, after doing hours of research, in modern canon, now refers to herself by She/Her pronouns)~
i remember reading i disgustingly bad fanfic made by a christian woman in which she basically said that if you use the color purple you are automatically a woman lmao
@@EmperorTyrael That video was definitely insightful (didn’t realize the Twitter & Pixiv drama escalated that far). My interpretation of the events in Strive is Bridget re-claiming their female identity for themselves separate from their upbringing in the village after years of introspection, doing so for herself rather than from the pressures of society (though I can still see how people interpret the situation as Bridget falling back into gender grooming childhood. I interpreted it similar to how one finds religion independently for themselves later in life despite a traumatic religious upbringing). Still happy to see the excitement and influx of new players because of Bridget. Be it representation for transgenderism, gender non-conformity, a cute boy in feminine clothing, a cute girl, or simply for a fighter that wields a yo-yo while tagging in a possessed teddy bear. End of the day, the reaction to the whole situation says one thing: we love Bridget: the gender-mixup yo-yo master who keeps on yoing~
Fun fact: most characters in anime that wear bandages on their chest are most likely samurai/ronin or Japanese tough-guy/tough-girl archetypes. The style or article of covering is called a sarashi, basically just cloth or bandages. Which is what Shiver most likely references..
Honestly, my first exposure to this in gaming is everyone's favourite purple jester NiGHTS. I had Christmas NiGHTS as a kid, and I remember the manual specifically stating that NiGHTS had no gender. Or, to be more specific, their gender matches those who they dualise (fuse) with, with them being genderless when not dualised. This game was initially released in 1996. And yet as a kid I just shrugged it off as the most normal thing in the world (which it should be) because flying jester go brrrrrr
Basically I believe the creator said that since NiGHTS is a being of dreams, he/she/they can become whatever you percieve him/her/them as. Which does make sense when NiGHTS can take on many forms.
I hope we'll keep seeing more NB rep as games continue. Titles that encourage player-inserts should honestly go down this route by default, it just makes sense for player choice. Some people will go purple in the face at the thought, but that's okay.
Actually, in Splatoon 3's hero mode, we do have a nonbinary character! The Captain,(formerly Agent 3 in 2's Octo expansion) uses they/them exclusively! And they have since Octo expansion. Regardless of the 'style' you choose for them, they use they/them!

something i do think is a slight problem (that has perhaps gotten better) _is_ constantly making the non-human characters (namely, robots) the only nonbinary representation. i just want nonbinary representation to not be relegated to *robot* or *weird alien that has different sexes and genders than humans.*
@RobotBlue i don't inherently have a problem with nonbinary alien/robot characters, my problem is when they're the total replacement for nonbinary human (or human-equivalent) characters
This kind of othering is what led to voidpunk. With Juniper, you can kind of argue that they're not quite human in a few ways, but in game none of the characters actually distinguish those traits from just "human."

About shiver a Splatoon 3: i do not know anything about Splatoon beyond funny gay squid game, but as a nonbinary person who fluxuated with pronouns for a long time, I think you can identify as a woman or as female and still be nonbinary. there aren't really any hard rules for nonbinary identity. if it makes you happy to think of shiver as non binary, then she is nonbinary. Non binary people do not need to use they/them of couse, and can have any style or name they want. Shiver's pronouns might be she/her, and she might wear a binder due to body dismorphia, but she can still be nonbinary.
How is Binder = Body Dismorphia? It's mostly used in traditonal Japanese Style during Festivals, at least in Osaka where I live, and is used for both men and women.
@@JArt872 trans people (usually afab individuals) wear binders to flatten their chest. Cause ya know (afab = assigned female at birth) usually have boobs and they usually would want a flatter chest because that is seen as more masculine. And having breast can cause body dysphoria so people bind their chest. And some get top surgery. This is an over simplification but that’s the jest of it. So that’s why when some people saw chest binding they thought “Is this a hint of them being trans 🤔” Although I got to say it is interesting to learn about how Japanese people would do chest binding for festivals. I understand why some people in the west didn’t consider that being a possibility and I hope you understand why that wasn’t a lot of peoples first guest. @@spilledteaissadtea3037 Is this why Crossdressers are just Trans people who don't know they are Trans even thou they never say they are. Is that the message we want?
@@JArt872 what no. This is just a common thing in the trans community (in America) I should’ve made it more clear that I was mainly referring to why afab trans people bind their chest. Like how you said it’s well known where you live binding is for a festival that cis men and cis women do. Binding here (at least in America) is usually known for afab trans people. I was trying to explain why that was our first guest. Also No. Anyone who says cross dressers are trans they just don’t know is scum. No one should go around telling people who they are that’s disgusting. I’m not telling people that drag queens are trans women cause they’re not UNLESS THEY SAY SO. So no, telling cross dressers that they are trans was not the point of my message. I try not to assume peoples intents and instead just listen to what they have to say about themselves. If they say they’re a cross dressers imma believe them. I’m very how you came to your conclusion? Like what did I say that made you think I was trying to force labels on people? Seriously Im genuinely asking
I believe that Shiver’s actually wearing something called a sarashi from Japan. I’m not very educated on it myself, though, so I won’t go too in-detail about it. However, I have seen a few other characters (who definitely identify as female) from other games also wearing it. Either way, I’m actually really happy to find out that there’s a character who’s outright stated to be agender. I’m an agender person myself, and I don’t see that often. I really resonated with what you said about representation in characters, because I see a lot of characters whose only character trait is being gay or trans or whatever. That doesn’t normalize it at all.
This man cannot for the life of him make good and accurate tips for Splatoon, the game he plays and makes videos on, but eloquently and understandably talks about something as complex as Gender. 10/10, great video.
To be fair, Xenoblade 3 is full of dubs in areas where Xenoblade was... fucking questionable. The bath scene early in the game being the most obvious and spoiler free one. That scene ruled.
oh yea! i tend to not really like stuff like that in games, but I feel like it was handled relatively well. helps to show how tight knit, comfortable, and familiar the keves trio are with each other, and if the camera lingers on anyone's body, it's mainly the guys, surprisingly. it still felt somewhat forced, like all JRPG's seemingly have to meet a quota of at least one (1) bathhouse scene in their game to get the greenlight, but it was still handled in a way that I haven't seen before that I appreciate
@@mori2037 i personally think the scene was used to show/add to further scenes in a certain main area, that these characters have NO idea about sexy time/repro.
@@morriganrenfield8240 exactly this. The scene isnt doing a bath house scene as some like box to tick off, it's taking a massive trope in anime that Xenoblade has used before itself and turning it on its head for the world and story of this game, but I also think it's a showing of the way this game would handle physical attraction throughout too. As the game goes on and our characters learn about love and attraction, they also begin feeling that attraction. The game doesnt fall into the traps of overly sexualized fanservice though still. The characters feel attraction and there are some very hot characters, but they're never sexualized. They keep personal agency over their bodies in a way that isnt typical in many anime style games, and very much was not typical in Xenoblade 2.
Apex was the first game I have ever played with a Non-binary person that wasn't just..... I love it so much that we are being seen and added in games (and added not just as fing villains...)
Had to pause and grin partway through at the comment about playing Chrono Trigger. That was my first JRPG as a small nerd and it changed my life and expectations for entertainment. Always love seeing it get love.
An explanation for the Splatoon 3 logo being purple and yellow, they’re complementary colors on the color wheel. Blue and orange were complementary, pink (technically should be red) and green are complementary, and purple and yellow are complementary. While the enby explanation can be used, this is also a possibility.
Honestly, while people can think what they want, using the Splatoon 3 colors to represent Nintendo removing gender (which technically isn't right, they just dont call it gender anymore) is.. honestly really overthinking it the yellow color is more of a neon greenish yellow, and the "purple" is indigo- and for the complimentary colors stuff, as an example I could see the next game's colors being green/purple or purple/orange
@@ActualAlien_ it's not supposed to be taken seriously, it's more of a happy coincidence that the game to kill player biological locking is the game with enby colors for the icon in other words: it's a funny coincidence
As a non binary person, this is a fun video to see. The stuff about Kirby I didn't know, that's cool, and makes sense, since they're just, a hungry space baby (which I can relate to). Also big fan of the NB colors, good contrast with purple making a nice middle ground.
Just one thing: I don’t think shiver is wearing a binder, she seems to have Japanese cultural influence with the fan so I’m guessing it’s a “sarashi” not a binder
If you ever do another video on these kinds of topics, do you ever think you might do one about Autistic characters? It's really something that media struggles to get right, with the only really good example of an Autistic character being Donnie from Rise of the TMNT. Besides that, I really can't think of any for video games. This is all coming from someone with Austim myself btw.
just found your channel today, and i'm pretty impressed! your videos about diversity are actually very useful to me, who, as a cis white guy, is trying to write a story with lots of diverse characters, but isn't entirely confident in my ability to do so yet. definitely will keep them in mind, much appreciated!
Appreciate how spot-on this was! Can never know what to expect when someone who's not NB lends their voice to the discussion, but this was refreshingly on point. Thanks especially for the "just ask" segment, people love to make such a fuss about how it's impossible to know what pronouns people use when in reality an overwhelming majority of NBs are happy to clarify. Big props to you using your platform to promote inclusivity as of late! It's always felt like a cozy accepting space and it's awesome to have you leaning into that.
Love the vid, Astro! I don’t think bandages should be considered a binder, though. Binding one’s chest with bandages is one of the least safe ways to do it
I desperately want 13:14 to be a gif, it's absolutely amazing. Same with the women wearing armor clip. I adore this video so much and it taught me a lot about characters i never would've known while teaching me about characters i know but didn't know enough of (I freaking vibe with the enby in Chrono Trigger, that makes me wanna replay the game again and actually attempt to beat the thing.) I hope someday i can become a game designer where i can add all of these factors into my games. It makes me happy seeing games growing into more inclusive options for all and i wanna give that same happiness to others in my own creations when needed!
Forgot to add Purple but i'm too lazy to edit comment so you get a reply to myself with it... Purple. Purple and Gold are my favorite color. Yep, that's it. It ain't two colors it's just a singular color Purple & Gold/Yellow. Oop now it's a 3 in 1 color. I love being indecisive but still very decisive in my fav color(s) lmao
I loved Juniper in XC3, they have a quest later in the game that always made me think “Zeon, that they/themussy got me acting up” BLESS KITE! Also I would love to see a non binary or a male idol in Splatoon, I think it’d be a fun switch up! Big Man was clearly a trolly compromise from the creators, and I loved it so I’m fine with that lol. And it’s cool that Splatoon is a very female MC driven franchise, but I think we could absolutely see more varied idols in the games 💜
Does Big Man not count as an idol? Funny story: I first learned about Deep Cut from a version of that "pronoun mugs" meme on Twitter. Frye was "she/her", Shiver was "they/them", and Big Man was "cool hat".
@@NitroIndigo I’m pretty sure we’re counting him as one anyways, but deep cut seem like a weird trio… 2 idols and a hypeman kind of guy? I would say he’s an idol because he actually gets to sing!
In my case, Im a cis, straight man, and I don’t really consider myself agender or androgynous or anything. However, there are things that I like doing or that I want to try that the common populace would deem “girly”, but that doesn’t mean anything to me. I want to cosplay as Bridget and wear a skirt, but that doesn’t mean anything to me. I just want to do it ‘cause it sounds really fun. Same goes for learning a dance choreography thats very “feminine”. It looks fun, I wanna do it, that’s it.
I didn't even notice that juniper was only being referred as they until after beating the game. Also one thing on the gendered clothing stuff I'd like to point out is about fire emblems class system, specifically the 3ds ones, some of the classes with more revealing cuts like ninjas and dark mages were horny on both sides, and very few classes were gender locked, especially in fates
Totally agree and loved the video, I just wanted to add that whether you make your NB character make a deal out of their gender or lack thereof or not, both of them are ok, people that play all these video games don't even know there are so many NB folks in it and that's fine, but it's ok for them to be more explicit about that too, to add more awareness, depth and much-needed representation to it, or not, again it's ok, it just depends on the character itself, and you can even use the opportunity to make a good story out of it, add some depth and problems that NB folks face or whatever the f u want the story to be, again is ok for them to talk about that OR NOT that's not forced inclusivity, they're literally just talking bout themselves and their problems of their day to day life as if literally any cisgender character would do without even get flagged for it. But people are quick to assume that that's "forced" because NB folks don't even have the chance to exist and be themselves normally outside in the real world and talk about them and their problems like everybody else does, that's why I think is more important if they could be more explicit about it even though again, I do agree that is totally fine if they choose not to.
Being non-binary in the world of Xenoblade 3 means nothing ultimately. The characters have no concept of masculine or feminine traits and traditions. They aren't born naturally and do not understand the biological capacity for creating new life. Gender and even sex, does not exist in Xenoblade 3 as far as the Keves/Agnes characters in the game world are concerned.
Another thing I like about Rise is that you can put facial hair on your character no matter the body type! Which made me very happy as I gave my character (who I like to imagine is NB) the more feminine body and some stubble :D
Your videos are such an effortless blend of being informative, stylish, well edited, entertaining and full of personality. Really inspiring and enjoyable to watch. I hope you have a great day! ...also purple
Purple!! I fall under the Enby umbrella and so does my partner, and this was an EXTREMELY lovely video. You did great with the explanations and had lovely ideas regarding implementing gendered and non-gendered characters in media and gaming that I quite agree with. This was awesome!! Thank you so much!! 🎉 You’ve got a new sub I’m gonna send this to my partner now, they don’t play a ton of games that don’t have character creators and thus haven’t seen much representation for people like them. My darling will love this 💕
i really love these videos about inclusivity and representation dude, always top notch. anyway my favorite nonbinanry character is kris deltarune. if i drank kris tea, i'd probably regenerate quite a bit of HP from that purple flavor.
The point about Frisk/Kris being ambiguous is a huge misconception due to people glossing over the final twist in Undertale. The player is lead to believe that Frisk is their avatar for most of the game, until their real name is revealed right at the end, separating the two parties. Deltarune instead does this right off the bat by immediately undoing the initial character customization and showing Kris rebel against the player's control multiple times. In light of these twists, the exclusive use of "they" for both these characters would mean that they're NB. And as someone else already pointed out, the case with Shiver is straight-up censorship.
SHOCKED that Silver the Hedgehog, non binary and queer ICON, wasn't on this list (/j) But srsly as a trans person who has been watching your splatoon 2 vids for a good while now, this was such a delight to see! It just felt so genuine. Seeing some of my favorite games appear here was awesome It makes me so happy to see more ppl talk abt this (you nailed explaining things early on 👍)! Some of these I had no idea abt, but I'm so happy we're being represented more and more in a positive light, now more than ever before
Slight mention to Hollow Knight, the vessels literally have no gender, it was removed as they got tossed in The Abyss and consumed by Void (dark power). They'd fit into the 1st category of Genderless Beings. [In contrast, one of Hornet's titles is the Gendered Child, as she's the only offspring of the Pale King who was not "Voided".]
Just a little correction, Testament was always supposed to be agender, even as far back as the original Guilty Gear. It was a mistranslation that gave them he/him pronouns in English, like how Justice also got he/him pronouns even though she is a woman.

Friendly reminder that binding with bandages is very dangerous and can cause nerve damage
@@productionscrub8476 Yeah. That's true. I just wanted to share a fun fact and didn't consider if people would actually try this without doing their own research.

I assumed as much for many years because I had only been aware of one very rigid definition of what gender dysphoria is, and things I have said while 100% believing I was cis include
"My quality of life would be better if my body was on a 24-hour hormone cycle instead of a monthly one"
and
"Having boobs sucks low-key, not really worth it you lucky you don't gotta deal with that shit" (to a cis man)
and
"pregnancy is a body horror nightmare. Even if abortions were free and easy I'd rather die than know that I have been pregnant" (and knew I wouldn't have kids since I was four 0_o)
and I thought that since the bleeding part of my cycle didn't cause major trauma it couldn't possibly make me dysphoric (even though that's the half of the month I function worse and find it almost impossible to bathe regularly)
Plus I have almost never been able to self-inserting in media as female, and unless I'd made a character as close as possible to my physical body, I always choose male avatars in games
Mostly I just wanna put it out there that if you have random unexplained depersonalization/derealization symptoms that you just can't quite put your finger on the cause, that could be a way gender dysphoria presents
(please excuse my decompression rant, I found out last week and I should have realized a long long time ago ):
Strong third, generally you should just play around with presentation and find what feels the most correct, or realise that all of it kinda sucks (like I did) and just live in constant confusion that people do have any inherent meaning of what gender even is, come to terms with the fact that you kinda exist outside of all that, and just be a happy lil person that no one knows understands just by being looking at :D
9:02 Actually Shiver is wearing a sarashi, not a binder. Sarashi is a piece of cloth that's traditionally used when you are going to wear some type of traditional japanese clothing. Nowadays using a Sarashi that's exposed it's usually associated with criminal or rebellious characters.
that's actually a pretty cool character design detail. Love how punk Splatoon manages to be, despite being made by Nintendo
Why do you guys want shiver to be non-binary so badly. I think its that she's a female. Forcing a sexuality on a character is really bad you lnow

So English Kirby could still be nb, just using he/him pronouns.
but if someone is non-binary but still uses he/him or she/her pronouns what's even the point of being nb? no hate but I genuinely don't get it..
@@elnkianni3466 The point of being nb is that there is no point of being nb. There's no rules.
@@elnkianni3466 gender is an illusion
To put things more simply, pronouns are more closely tied to gender presentation than to gender identity.
If the intent was to always keep her cis all that effort just seems misplaced (and a tad queerbaity.)
All in all though Shiver would look good in purple, I wonder how splatfest colors will look on her.

Random things to note as a person who obsesses over the Xenoblade series:
Xenoblade 2 did also have a seemingly nonbinary character in the form of Roc.

As a nonbinary person myself this video was a really enjoyable watch! It’s interesting seeing a lot of characters and series which I grew up with and love show up here as well, makes me wonder how it took me this long to figure this stuff out sometimes…
Speaking of, Kirby is a pretty important character to me due to nostalgia and also partly because of their gender ambiguity. It’s like with the colour purple - that colour hasn’t been assigned a gender with it, it’s just purple :)
I could honestly go on about a lot of the characters mentioned here, Kirby, testament, Juniper - they all mean so much to me because they’re representation done in an authenticate way.
Or people could just create good characters and focus on the plot instead of "muh representation and diversity". 🙄

End of the day: Testament is Testament, whose hobbies include:
Fashion magazines, DIY, collecting makeup, plastic modeling (esp. giant robots), sightseeing, fishing, pottery, river trekking, road biking, appreciating opera, weight training, fortune-telling, bonsai, gardening, watching wrestling, baking, mahjong, painting (not well), embroidery, mountain climbing, nail art, golfing, star-gazing, touring hot springs, board games, writing sci-fi novels, barbecue, belly dance, beach volleyball, watching baseball, making dollhouses, liquor (they're a non-drinker), snowboarding, watching shark B-movies, collecting occult trinkets, and scrapbooks, who also so happens to go by They/Them.
And Bridget is Bridget (who, after doing hours of research, in modern canon, now refers to herself by She/Her pronouns)~
The Guilty Gear wiki comment section should not be delved into at any cost, lest you have spare brain cells.
I would like to point you to a video regarding Bridget and other characters in general.
ruclips.net/video/TiGgEt5k_Wk/видео.html
i remember reading i disgustingly bad fanfic made by a christian woman in which she basically said that if you use the color purple you are automatically a woman lmao

I'm so glad people still remember NiGHTS!
I hope we'll keep seeing more NB rep as games continue. Titles that encourage player-inserts should honestly go down this route by default, it just makes sense for player choice. Some people will go purple in the face at the thought, but that's okay.
Would love to see vids like this for trans fem and masc characters respectfully as well, always a delight to see an upload from this channel
9:13 finally, we can now conclude that there *is 2 gender.* And 0 and 1 gender. Thanks xenoblade!
Gender 2 is literally as non binary as it gets
There is also Roc
There is also 4 gender in XC2.
shiver isn't "literally wearing a binder", shes wearing a sarashi.
Actually, in Splatoon 3's hero mode, we do have a nonbinary character! The Captain,(formerly Agent 3 in 2's Octo expansion) uses they/them exclusively! And they have since Octo expansion. Regardless of the 'style' you choose for them, they use they/them!
1:54 if I put a gender fluid person in a fridge will they become gender solid?
Be careful not to leave them in a hot car, they'll become gender gas 😨
Too much heat and they ascend to their ultimate form, the *GENDER PLASMA*
If you touch a power line, you might become gender plasma
@@swordbunni Gas is fluid.
@RobotBlue All of those are fluid.
as a nonbinary person myself this video is huge. representation matters and it makes me so happy to see one of my favorite youtubers covering a topic that means so much to me, thank you astro. also absolutely let men be hoes.
Love that you’re a bass player man, I‘m about 6 months deep and getting better every day. Rock on!
now i gotta learn to art to make Shiver purple
Gotta learn Pixel Art Kora!!
Purple is the new Blue..
First, I'm not NB but I am Trans, and I wanted to thank you for taking a look at some of these complex issues that plague the gaming industry. Also I've seen a few of your videos, and the running gag of you missing important dates or timeframes is absolutely hilarious. Keep up the great work
something i do think is a slight problem (that has perhaps gotten better) _is_ constantly making the non-human characters (namely, robots) the only nonbinary representation. i just want nonbinary representation to not be relegated to *robot* or *weird alien that has different sexes and genders than humans.*
@RobotBlue i don't inherently have a problem with nonbinary alien/robot characters, my problem is when they're the total replacement for nonbinary human (or human-equivalent) characters
This kind of othering is what led to voidpunk.
With Juniper, you can kind of argue that they're not quite human in a few ways, but in game none of the characters actually distinguish those traits from just "human."
started bing watching this channel over the week and then i saw this pop up. this channel is such a gem, you’re not only funny but casually yet respectfully discuss important topics that many cannot do. great video!
i do really like the color purple... what else that i like though, is seeing a gaming youtuber cover topics that younger me would have NEVER imagined any of the gaming youtubers i watched to cover. this video almost makes me emotional by just seeing it exist. i really appreciate you captain, for making funny entertaining stuff, and simultaneously also raising some awareness for lgbt groups, which i find important ESPECIALLY in the gaming community. i love your content so much!!! keep it up!!!
My love for this channel has grown exponentially. I am so glad you were in my recommended feed.
So that’s why when some people saw chest binding they thought “Is this a hint of them being trans 🤔”
Although I got to say it is interesting to learn about how Japanese people would do chest binding for festivals. I understand why some people in the west didn’t consider that being a possibility and I hope you understand why that wasn’t a lot of peoples first guest. But yeah I hope this answers some questions as to why we thought chest binding = trans character.
Testament was the person that made me ask myself if I really am what I think I am, now I'm way happier than before
very glad i found this channel, on my way to binge the rest of the content 😌
I came to this channel to watch you dunk on XC2, but stayed for your laid back and inclusive content!

Did not expect to see a 5 year old Necrodancer TAS video of mine be used as background footage at 7:24, cool video though!
Apex was the first game I have ever played with a Non-binary person that wasn't just..... Non-binary, they're a badass hunter, a blend of the old ways and new age, a lover of crows and a friend to all. As a Non-binary/genderfluid person myself it feels great that respawn is actually taking notice of LGBTQIA+ people and making their characters feel like real LGBTQIA+ members. I love it so much that we are being seen and added in games (and added not just as fing villains...)
Our generation is lost.
Had to pause and grin partway through at the comment about playing Chrono Trigger. That was my first JRPG as a small nerd and it changed my life and expectations for entertainment. Always love seeing it get love.
kris just IS non-binary, and not because they're a blank slate. in fact, they specifically aren't
An explanation for the Splatoon 3 logo being purple and yellow, they’re complementary colors on the color wheel. Blue and orange were complementary, pink (technically should be red) and green are complementary, and purple and yellow are complementary. While the enby explanation can be used, this is also a possibility.
Honestly, while people can think what they want, using the Splatoon 3 colors to represent Nintendo removing gender (which technically isn't right, they just dont call it gender anymore) is.. honestly really overthinking it
the yellow color is more of a neon greenish yellow, and the "purple" is indigo- and for the complimentary colors stuff, as an example I could see the next game's colors being green/purple or purple/orange
@@ActualAlien_ it's not supposed to be taken seriously, it's more of a happy coincidence that the game to kill player biological locking is the game with enby colors for the icon

As a non binary person, this is a fun video to see. The stuff about Kirby I didn't know, that's cool, and makes sense, since they're just, a hungry space baby (which I can relate to).

Purple Man from FNaF made it! Real Talk, happy to watch your video at the end.
just found your channel today, and i'm pretty impressed! your videos about diversity are actually very useful to me, who, as a cis white guy, is trying to write a story with lots of diverse characters, but isn't entirely confident in my ability to do so yet. definitely will keep them in mind, much appreciated!
I adore this video so much and it taught me a lot about characters i never would've known while teaching me about characters i know but didn't know enough of (I freaking vibe with the enby in Chrono Trigger, that makes me wanna replay the game again and actually attempt to beat the thing.)
I hope someday i can become a game designer where i can add all of these factors into my games.
Dude, I legitimately respect your content. Not only are you entertaining, but you explain things in an easy to comprehend and non offensive way!
Bro that’s funny 😭😭
I just finished that guest last night it was so wholesome 💀
Does Big Man not count as an idol?
Funny story: I first learned about Deep Cut from a version of that "pronoun mugs" meme on Twitter. Frye was "she/her", Shiver was "they/them", and Big Man was "cool hat".
@@NitroIndigo I’m pretty sure we’re counting him as one anyways, but deep cut seem like a weird trio… 2 idols and a hypeman kind of guy? I would say he’s an idol because he actually gets to sing!
agnussy*
In my case, Im a cis, straight man, and I don’t really consider myself agender or androgynous or anything. However, there are things that I like doing or that I want to try that the common populace would deem “girly”, but that doesn’t mean anything to me. I want to cosplay as Bridget and wear a skirt, but that doesn’t mean anything to me. I just want to do it ‘cause it sounds really fun. Same goes for learning a dance choreography thats very “feminine”. It looks fun, I wanna do it, that’s it.
I didn't even notice that juniper was only being referred as they until after beating the game. Also one thing on the gendered clothing stuff I'd like to point out is about fire emblems class system, specifically the 3ds ones, some of the classes with more revealing cuts like ninjas and dark mages were horny on both sides, and very few classes were gender locked, especially in fates
as much as fates sucked, it really was pretty good
Totally agree and loved the video, I just wanted to add that whether you make your NB character make a deal out of their gender or lack thereof or not, both of them are ok, people that play all these video games don't even know there are so many NB folks in it and that's fine, but it's ok for them to be more explicit about that too, to add more awareness, depth and much-needed representation to it, or not, again it's ok, it just depends on the character itself, and you can even use the opportunity to make a good story out of it, add some depth and problems that NB folks face or whatever the f u want the story to be, again is ok for them to talk about that OR NOT that's not forced inclusivity, they're literally just talking bout themselves and their problems of their day to day life as if literally any cisgender character would do without even get flagged for it.
But people are quick to assume that that's "forced" because NB folks don't even have the chance to exist and be themselves normally outside in the real world and talk about them and their problems like everybody else does, that's why I think is more important if they could be more explicit about it even though again, I do agree that is totally fine if they choose not to.
Juniper is probably my favorite non binary character in media ever. they're just so amazing!
Which made me very happy as I gave my character (who I like to imagine is NB) the more feminine body and some stubble :D
im quoting "this is a sillyman argument being made by sillyman" daily

The point about Frisk/Kris being ambiguous is a huge misconception due to people glossing over the final twist in Undertale. The player is lead to believe that Frisk is their avatar for most of the game, until their real name is revealed right at the end, separating the two parties. Deltarune instead does this right off the bat by immediately undoing the initial character customization and showing Kris rebel against the player's control multiple times. In light of these twists, the exclusive use of "they" for both these characters would mean that they're NB.
And as someone else already pointed out, the case with Shiver is straight-up censorship.
SHOCKED that Silver the Hedgehog, non binary and queer ICON, wasn't on this list (/j)
But srsly as a trans person who has been watching your splatoon 2 vids for a good while now, this was such a delight to see! It just felt so genuine. Seeing some of my favorite games appear here was awesome
It makes me so happy to see more ppl talk abt this (you nailed explaining things early on 👍)!
If inklings are made entirely out of liquid, do they count as gender "fluid"?
Just a little correction, Testament was always supposed to be agender, even as far back as the original Guilty Gear. It was a mistranslation that gave them he/him pronouns in English, like how Justice also got he/him pronouns even though she is a woman.
One of my favorite nonbinary character is psi from BTD6, I think ninja kiwi did absolutely perfect with their voice.
In my opinion, all armor in video games should be purple bikini armor, regardless of the character's gender.
