  • In this part of the interview, which I had taken in September 2007, Pir Shoh Ismail, Shoh-e Panja, discusses in detail important topics including his family background, Shi’I Ismailism, and the cultural landscape of Wakhan. He talks about his ancestors migration from Yamgon (Yamgan) within Badakhshan of Afghanistan to the settlement of Shergin in today’s Tajik Wakhan to Qala-e Panja or Panja-e Muborak of Afghan Wakhan. It was his great grandfather who had migrated to Panja, the former capital of Wakhan State. After drawing the Durand line in the first half of 1890s, the same ethnolinguistic communities and closed closed kinspersons on boht side of the Panj River has been seriously suffering in isolation due to the political borders. In the later phase of the Durand Line, we come across a republic in the name of Tajikistan in 1920s under former USSR (Soviet Socialist Republics)..
In the interview, we also try to discuss some aspects within historic and prehistoric(archaeological) domains such as the Shrines within the Islamic era and the old forts and fortess during the Buddhist and Zoroastrian periods. The current states of the heritages in many terms are evidenced to have been ruined or devastated by the non-locals of the valley and with the help of few internal facilitators or agents. I hope the audience will find the discussion productive in diferent contexts.
