The reason Buffy didn't kill Glory is because her life is directly tied to Ben's. And Buffy wouldn't take HIS life. He was a human being created for a purpose he didn't ask for, just like Dawn. Buffy's entire mission here was to find a solution that didn't involve killing an innocent. Whereas Giles was fully willing to kill Dawn, if it meant saving the world, so he murdered Ben in a heartbeat. It makes perfect sense.

I know what you mean about Buffy versus Dracula but like much of this show there's hidden depths to it that does indeed set up the themes of the season. It also has maybe the best introduction of a character ever.
In a way Joyce was the heart of the show and kept things together in a way that was never noticed or dwelt upon and that you don't even feel until she was gone.
Giles has a difficult road to walk because he doesn't want Buffy to become too dependent on him in a way that impedes her growth but still wants to be there for her, especially given that he might be going back to Britain eventually.

Your shirt reminds me of the one that Buffy was wearing in 'There's No Place Like Home', where she finds out everything about Dawn. I get the sense that it was intentional.

It is best to divide the high school seasons of BtVS from the post-h.s. seasons. Season four sets up several aspects of post high school Buffy including Oh grow up, what Joss has said is one of the dominant themes of season four. Just as in "real life" post high school life is different and season four sets that up. Season four also sets into motion the question of slayerness in its counterpointing of slayer and slayerette magics versus the scientific-military-utilitarian logics of the big bad of season four, the Initiative and in its what you are, whats to come motif. Needless to say Buffy vs. Dracula recapitulates, expands, and plays with that issue as well. And that is one of the reasons why season five episode one is central and important of what you are and what is to come.

As for ‘Restless’. You will understand it more once you get through the whole show. There are arcs you have not yet seen the conclusion of that are hinted on in ‘Restless’. Foreshadowings to specific character developments. It’s not a set up of anything really - it’s just a introspective look-in to what’s going on with the main core four and you can look back on it once you’ve seen the whole show and realize stuff you didn’t before. It’s an episode made for interpretation and that’s why I adore it. It’s why it’s my favourite episode of ‘BtVS’. To this day I still don’t understand everything about it. But I’ve certainly understood most of it because I’ve seen the whole show at least two times over now.
Just wait it out. It’s worth it.

Season 5 is also my favourite and I agree with your Buffy Vs Dracula thoughts. Season 5 is like an epic, it runs this storyline through all episodes and connect everything in the end. Its why I often compare this season with a book. Also, you nailed the season theme

You're sleeping on Buffy Vs. Dracula. It's dressed up as a bubble gum popcorn episode, but it subtly introduces every single theme that will run throughout the season.

The meaning is inconsequential to what it actually means to Buffy. "Death" - her death - it's not just a gift. It's a relief. She's realised that that line did not mean that she causes death. She IS that death.
She IS 'THE GIFT'. It's a relief in many ways for her. Not just in the suicidal/self-sacrificial way, which is valid. But also in the way of she got to decide when and where and how she died, and she got to have her personal vendetta out on the Watcher's Council by doing what they would instruct her to do but doing it in such a way where it would save her sister, save her family of Scoobies, and save the whole Universe all at the same time. She basically found the non-existent cheat code for the game system of Slayerdom and had not a hint of hesitation in using it.
And so to tie it all together... ironically by dying... she saved herself.
She didn't have a death wish.
    She had a relief wish.
    Because "Death" WAS her relief.
It's a multi-layered realisation. The realisation that she could sacrifice herself instead of Dawn. The realisation that she could save everyone and everything by giving up her life. And eventually the realisation it's what she wished for herself. It's absolutely genius writing!
So long as it was her choice,… it was her gift to Dawn, to the Scooby Gang and to the Universe... But most of all to herself. She won the game by dying in it her way.
I know I’m not the only one to have picked this up about the meaning of ‘The Dawn’. Just wait till Passion of the Nerd puts out his analysis on the episode. He’ll explain all of this way better than I ever could in his clever almost Alan Watts-ish way.

My take on why Dracula was so underwhelming is that he was created by the Monks to get Buffy's blood, so that the Monks can use it to create Dawn. Remember:
RILEY: I've lived in Sunnydale a couple of years now. Know what I've never noticed before?
    GILES: Uh, a castle?
    RILEY: A big honking castle.
To me that says the reality altering had already begun.

When I first watched The Gift I was certain that Dawn was going to sacrifice herself and that act would break the monks spell and the memory of Dawn would fade like the Superstar reality did in season 4. We would be back in the reality of season 1-4. That’s how I felt then. I had a little animosity towards Dawn that went away the next season. Now, I see with all the loss Buffy suffered she wouldn’t have had that familial comfort after the loss of Joyce.
I think Giles from the moment he found out the truth about Dawn, always had it in the back of his mind that Dawn was an illusion, an expendable one if need be. He probably had to fight against the implanted memories, I’m sure they endeared Dawn to everyone so they would want to protect her, but he is ever the realist, like when he snuffs out Ben, I think he though he might have to make a tough choice about Dawn to protect the world.

Which character grew the most? Well, Dawn, obviously. Duh. :D
Big Bads: Glory, Mayor, Master, then a gap to Angelus, then a huge gap to that other guy. It's basically my order of how much fun I thought the big bad actors had chewing the scenery. I like the gleefully bad big bads, and Glory, the Mayor, and the Master seemed to be enjoying being evil the most. Angelus is a bit too emo for my taste.

Season 5 is epic in a different way, here the arc of BtVS begins to grow - the main audience is no longer teens but young adults.
It begins with the most famous of all Vampyres (how could Vlad not make an appearance in a Slayer show?), and ends with a fight to the death with an actual God - one of a triumvirate of three gods. Will we see more gods in the future?
In the middle the gang faces the mortal death of Joyce & revelations of the family tree (Dawn). Yet life goes on... and the gang muddles on to eventually face Glory. BTW- wasn't Glory a sort of anti-Buffy? Gorgeous, witty, well dressed, and surrounded by helpers who would die for her cause. Each is a perfect nemesis for the other.
Tara, being an eldest child, has been more patient & insightful than the others. When Willow tells her to find Glory, she senses Giles part to play - Killer! A bit like Judas giving a kiss.
We've also seen Dawn take after Tara - insightful & occasionally taking action on her own. Dawn isn't yet a Scoobie either.
We've watched Buffy & Giles since the Watchers Council cut ties. When Buffy calls him out in the finale (we bloody well are...), she stands up to his council. Then Ripper stood up to his Slayer! This reminded me of the S2 finale when Joyce said "if you walk out that door..." Some actions cannot be undone.
Going forward... the only character not feeling guilt over Buffy's death will be Buffy - and maybe Anya. jmho
