Avid marlin lure maker and we have found that instead of using the latex skirts that are expensive and hard to find in our area of Costa Rica we use boat seat vinyl. Inexpensive and holds up for about 10 to 15 big hits from the pelagic fish. Great video.
What would i need to make some of these say a dozen. Would i grab a hard bait starter kit then xtra resin & the mold clay stuff or whats best in your opinion? Want to make 2-3 diff heads to start and be able to make 3-4 of each. For wahoo mahi tuna ect. Med size heads i would say.
The mold putty says it has a temperature range reaching only to 395 F. You poured lead which is much hotter when melted. Is there anything special I need to do for the mold putty 15 to take molten lead?
Greetings from Massachusetts I ask you where I can buy the products to make lures where I can get the silicone and if the epoxy that you sell at home depont works for that too.
Also, Larry, looking into purchasing the 3 gal aluminum best value vacs vacuum degassing chamber, ve115 3cfm single stage, vacuum pump kit just to be able to use the Alumilite water video...but asking if can use with any holographic tape or you can recommend best to buy (for inserts). Thx you
Larry, Hoping you can help on a pet project of mine. I've been told all the "Tungsten" weights and jigs are being imported presently, and I'm trying to locate the tungsten "dust" and the rosins they use to create those items. Would you please ask your sources as mine have run dry and I still have no real answers. Many thanks - and BTW I'll be trying your Marlin rig scaled back for our Albacore off the Oregon Coast! Terrific Idea!
Makelure.com actually has the tungsten powder and resin that it can be used with. Glad you liked the Marlin rig! Here's the link to the tungsten powder: www.makelure.com/store/p/959-Tungsten-5lbs.aspx
I would recommend wet sanding if you are using any type rotary tool or lathe to sand and use plenty of water. The more cold the better. You want to avoid heat buildup. If you're sanding some minor imperfections by and, you would likely be fine without water.
hi larry i want to start making lures and u make them awesome thanks for video how do u make your moulds and what are the made out of? how long do u leave the lure in the pressure pot? how do u know what size insert is good for a lure? cheers thanks hope to get reply
Hi Trent, thanks for your comments! I will pass them on to Larry. The moldmaking material is High Strength 3 silicone from Makelure.com. You need to keep the mold/resin in the pressure pot long enough for the resin to turn rock hard. Otherwise, air bubbles can re-expand in the resin. The time depends on what resin you you, but usually is between 1-2 hours. As far as a insert size, that's up to you based on how you want to present the sure. I would recommend leaving a minimum of 1/4" around the insert for the over-molding resin.
Hi John, sorry your question got by me. It's High Strength 3 by Makelure.com. Here's the direct link www.makelure.com/store/p/921-Alumilite-s-High-Strength-3.aspx Thanks!
Use to be a customer of Alumilite , but when they flashed a BLM message on there RUclips page i stopped. Not once in my many years on their RUclips channel, did i see them post a message about an officer shot in the line of duty, guess only when it fits the right narrative, and that makes me sick to my stomach.

EXCELLENT WORK
When sanding the lure head, are you using wet sand paper only?

is there any difference in the blue mold putty your using vs the alumilite yellow mold putty you can buy in a hobby store?
No, any of our silicone putties can be used for this application. The only difference between the two is the cure time of the putty.
More vids please
