The only witness was the taxi driver so it’s just his word that happened. They probably didn’t find the bloodstained clothes or knives so couldn’t connect him. They need physical proof not just testimony.
To be honest, the taxi driver is kinda suspicious. He saw someone with bloodstains on their clothes while holding a knife and didn't call the police immediately.
Shouldn't these cold cases be revisited?? They can be or may be solved with current DNA technology??
The problem is there is no evidence from the murderer. The hair was from the eldest son.

The thing is that the longer a cold cases goes on. The harder it gonna be solved cuz of time have properly ruined any potential evidence not found and witnesses have memories not accurate enough or have passed away

I was 8 then. This case coupled with the Adrian Lee child murder case and the Macdonald missing created lots of tension for children then. I remembered vividly when I was gaterushing to get into Hollywood cinema in Tanjong Katong when I was about 7 plus, a stranger man dragged and pulled man wrist and tried hard to drag me away. He must have thought I was alone but my father was amid the crowd and I shouted for him. He then let go my hand. That was how Singapore was in the 70s. Gangsterism and child hijacking were rampant.

i read about the case. It was very sick. 2 weeks after the murders, the killer had the nerve to send a chinese new year card with picture of children playing with the message "now you can have no more offsprings, ha ha ha...". The killer or killers knew, the mother gone through sterilisation process. Not to have anymore children. Luckily they managed to reverse the process and have a boy later in life.

Back in the 80s I was doing my reservist obligations and was a checkpoint IC during a navigation exercise in Lim Chu Kang cemetery alone on a pathway dividing the graveyard plots. I was drawn to a row of four identical tombstones. With a torch I checked them out and realized there were the victims by the dates of their deaths. It was sad. Very sad. At least they were together.
Singapore Police have the best technology today...they shouldn't forget to run all cold case...who knows they might crack the case...even if the killer is dead by now...

Since there was no sign of force entry, the kids must have knew who the person was and let the killer in the house. Not only that the killer also know about the mother. Probably it's someone they know and they r close too. Maybe they should use DNA test to help to solve this case

The parents probably offended some people and they knew who killed their children, but were too afraid to speak out probably in fear of their own life. Hence they were unwilling to give much information to the police during investigation.

I feel there is something unusual about this case. The person who knows about the sterilization must be extremely close to them, and they could narrow the suspects easily with that. The murderer would not be so stupid to write a letter and give them a lead like that. Unless the one writing that letter is not the murderer and he/she just wants to inflict the pain. Or there is bad blood between the murderer and the parents, and the murderer knows that the parents cannot turn him/her in for some reason. Anw, it is certain that the murderer is an acquaintance to the family

Lesson Learnt. Parents should not leave their children at home while they are away. If they really need to leave they need to ask their close family members, friends or someone who can be trusted to do the job.
The murderer has nothing better to do. If there's bloodstain the murder has the courage to escape whether there's bloodstain on his clothes,body or weapon the murderer is not scared of entering to prison as eternal punishment

Dont cite me but i remember there was a reddit post somewhere from a person who lived in the apartment block. The account wrote that all the neighbours have their suspicion on the same person, but are all complicit in keeping their mouth shut because the culprit had connections to violent gangs, and thus feared for their lives.
Oh yeah back in those days it was more lax and wild.
No way all the neighbors would shut their mouth to protect this sinister murderer. Many have kids too and they would have gotten police protection if they were afraid of the gangs. And considering how much public pressure it was on the police to crack the case, the police would have assured any witness of such protection. Regardless of how violent the gangs were back then, there is little chance all the neighbors can keep their mouth shut to not be implicated. It is also unheard for gangs in the past to kill kids. It likely to be a lover or someone related to the parents.

a few theories as to who is the murderer.
1. the guy who asked mei ying to buy lottery for him was the murderer.
2. the uncle was the murderer.
3. the neighbour who knocked on the Tan’s family door was the murderer.
The taxi driver. Who after seeing a bloody man with a bloody knife ignored and didn't call the police only after all this was public and they where searching for any witness who saw anyone near that area. He could get nervous and before be a suspect better be a witness.

If the card was real, they can get someone to read the handwriting and identify who it belongs to. It's a very effective way of identifying murderers no matter how similar someone's handwriting is, they can never be identical. If they compared it to the "Uncle" it could be sufficient evidence to flag him as the murderer

I think the police should trace the Malaysian neighbour Ah Seng who may be in his 60s by now to be interview again as he seems to be the only possible suspect who was close to the family (using their phone daily) and friendly to the children. and the house has no forced entry.
I was 7 years old at that time...live in the same block but 2nd floor...the whole situation was still vivid in my mind...I can remember they bring the body's one by one using the stairs....still remember looking at the families washing their mini bus during the weekends thru my window... :-(

Some of the story here is fabricated...even when they say the bodies almost Decapitate...but the truth is it's really Decapitate...cause I remembered either police or undertaker guys bring down a few small black plastic bags which I believed the body parts.... ( What I mentioned here is just an info of what I can remember during that time )

There’s a lot more to convicting a person to a murder , The Malaysian guy could have been killing a chicken or another animal. No one saw him enter the house and coming out of the house at the time , and the fact he was picked up near the scene is not suspicious cause he lived around the area. I would like to see whether there was a interview recording and would go from there , but this attack feels more personal or just with rage. Would want to know whether Malaysian guy had been having a rough time , or whether any close friends or family had a grudge.
A simple background check on him would have showed the truth.

Rumours had it during that time the suspect was the victims' uncle. Heard that he placed a standing order to bet a pair of 4D through one of their parents, but they told the uncle that they forgot to place the bet on the day when it hits the first prize. The rest is history.

no CCTV those days, many murder cases were unsolved, remember one robbery cum murder case where a woman was robbed and killed at the lottery outlet during the 90s, the murderer still remained at large

How can this be unsolved, its 110% that the killer knew them, knew the kids would be alone. If thats a fact then how many potential suspects can there be? It should be obvious to them who did it. Even if they lack evidence, this is an exceptionally brutal special case so u gotta do whatever it takes to get the culprit, frame him, kill him whatever it takes. If i was the dad i would kill the fucker the same way n then some. He have to know who it is. No way i can live on without getting revenge
Only two possible reasons for this brutal crime to happen. One is the killer is schizophrenic (crazy) the second is stem from crimes of passion. A jealous lover dont see them as children but betrayals. The chance of it being the first one is zero. Schizo ppl don't know what dafuc they're doing so evidence should be everywhere so it can only be a crime of passion. The hate of children can only stem from passion. Its obvious its not a child molester especially the way the children are killed indicates hate. Molesters don't hate children. They only kill to cover their crimes. Every murder has a motive. This one its rare so it should be fairly easy to pinpoint the motive. I seriously don't get how this case is unsolved, the motive its so strong n rare. Lack of evidence most likely so the father its the only one that can n should do something about it. He didn't. He don't deserve to live!!

Also, no sign of forced entry, the kids must know the murdered. I don't think the taxi driver is connected to victims.
Wait. If the uncle was the killer, how could he make a fundamental mistake of walking with a knife and blood in broad daylight? The killer was carful to not leave evidence behind and he didn't admit to killing them.
I also doubt the theory of the lottery ticket. Wouldn't the house be ransacked? Or did the killer carefully make sure to look as if the house was ok? In this case, the parents would know exactly who killed their children.
Additionally, I don't think it was someone the children knew. Imagine someone you know stab your brother/sister in front of you. You would immediately scream.
I believe that the children were killed by an intruder, who attacked them when they were sleeping. He/she could lock pick, or the door wasn't locked.
As for the note, it could just be a rumor, or the killer was their neighbour, who had heard the couple talk about sterilisation.

Rumours was abound then that this was a feud among the adult sibling of the extended family. Let's say you have a trusted friend (this friend could be your sisters or brothers) and rely on him/her to buy a long standing favourite 4D numbers 3 times a week. For years no luck. And when the winning numbers came out for a first prize tally, he/she said "forgot" to place the bet. Angers and distrust started to flare from that point. The result was the action.... Oh, by the way it was just a rumour only.

I chatted a few years ago with an investigator who is part of the case, Late Lionel de souza. He was a controversial but decorated, and highly experienced investigator. He claim that need to find 2 keys need to unlock to solve this case. First is the Úncle", 2nd is the parent.
